FCC’s New COVID-19 Telehealth Program Validates Importance of Telehealth and Remote Monitoring; PMD Healthcare’s Remote Tools Fit the Bill

PMD Devices

FCC’s focus on telehealth and remote monitoring validates what we at PMD Healthcare have known for a long time — that health starts wherever patients are, and that maintaining good health simply cannot be limited to the four walls of a hospital or physician’s office

PMD Healthcare, an innovative remote patient monitoring (RPM) and telehealth company that has been serving the healthcare industry for more than a decade, has announced that its remote healthcare solutions meet the criteria for devices that fall within the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) new COVID-19 Telehealth Program.

On April 10, the FCC announced its COVID-19 Telehealth Program, which provides $200 million to healthcare providers as part of the CARES Act, the $2 trillion economic relief package signed into law on March 27. The program is intended “to help health care providers furnish connected care services to patients at their homes or mobile locations in response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” the FCC said in a press release.

“FCC’s focus on telehealth and remote monitoring validates what we at PMD Healthcare have known for a long time — that health starts wherever patients are, and that maintaining good health simply cannot be limited to the four walls of a hospital or physician’s office,” says Wayne Meng, CEO and founder of PMD Healthcare. “Now that our health systems are overwhelmed and social distancing is paramount, we must do what we can to help healthcare providers achieve their mission of helping and healing patients in innovative ways. And we believe remote patient monitoring is the key.”

PMD Healthcare’s RPM kits include Bluetooth-enabled, patient-friendly medical devices that capture biometric data (oximetry, spirometry, temperature, blood pressure and weight), as well as a tablet equipped with telehealth capabilities. The kits wirelessly transmit data to PMD Healthcare’s secure, HIPAA-compliant web portal and help health providers assess symptoms, manage medications and educate patients. Additionally, the respiratory kit includes a digital spirometer — Spiro PD, the first-ever personal spirometer approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration — to measure lung function, which many RPM solutions lack.

PMD Healthcare applauds the current administration and the FCC for prioritizing remote healthcare, including telehealth services and remote patient monitoring devices. Remote healthcare options can help hospitals and providers manage the current COVID-19 crisis in several ways:

  • Reduce the spread of infection by preventing unnecessary visits to providers’ offices and hospitals
  • Preserve staff resources and personal protective equipment (PPE) for those with the greatest need
  • Improve outcomes for those with chronic diseases and others in high-risk groups by monitoring symptoms, vital signs, and medication adherence closely between healthcare visits, alerting physicians and healthcare providers if intervention is needed

“Given the importance of social distancing, telehealth is more important than ever, so we are pleased to do our part to help healthcare providers purchase telecommunications, broadband connectivity, and devices necessary for providing connected care,” the FCC press release noted. Hospitals and health systems can apply for the FCC program online.

About PMD Healthcare

PMD Healthcare is an industry-leading, fully integrated remote patient monitoring and telehealth company that helps physician groups, home health agencies and hospitals improve patient outcomes by monitoring patient health between healthcare visits. PMD Healthcare was founded in 2010 with the development of the first-ever FDA-approved personal spirometer, Spiro PD. Today, PMD Healthcare offers several RPM kits targeted to particular patient populations, including those with CHF, COPD, diabetes and hypertension. Remote patient monitoring can result in cost-savings and increased reimbursement for physicians, as well as better coordinated care. Discover more at pmd-healthcare.com.

White and Haines Advanced Dentistry Offer Emergency Dentistry in Cornelius, NC When Patients Need it Most

Although they always follow strict sanitation guidelines, these dentists are now adhering to additional protocols advised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In order to ensure the safety of their patients, their staff, and their community, phone consultations are also now available at White and Haines Advanced Dentistry.

The COVID-19 outbreak has made healthcare more difficult to come by. As a result, Drs. White, Haines, and Fischer are encouraging patients to receive the emergency dental care they need from their trusted team instead of visiting an urgent care or emergency room. Dental emergencies can range in severity but can include:

  • Severe and lasting toothache
  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Loose or failing dental implant
  • Red, painful, swollen gums
  • Broken or loose tooth

Those experiencing these conditions are encouraged to call their office for an initial screening. If an in-office visit is advised, an emergency visit will be scheduled as soon as possible. The White and Haines Advanced Dentistry staff has taken additional precautions to ensure each room is thoroughly sanitized before and after each patient’s visit with EPA-approved chemicals that kill bacteria and viruses like COVID-19.

If left untreated, dental issues can lead to infection and overall health issues. To ensure patients are able to maintain a healthy mouth and a healthy immune system, Drs. White, Haines, and Fischer encourage their community to receive the emergency dentistry they need as soon as the condition arises. Those looking to receive a consultation for elective treatments can schedule a personalized phone consultation to discuss their options and next steps.

SymphonyCare and Wisconsin Health Information Organization Achieve Qualified Entity Certification Status

“When we selected SymphonyCare as our data partner to modernize our platform and analytics capabilities, we were confident that their commitment to patient privacy and data security would help us achieve QE certification in our new technical environment,” said Dana Richardson, CEO of WHIO.

Wisconsin Health Information Organization (WHIO) today announced that they achieved Qualified Entity (QE) status through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Qualified Entity Certification Program (QECP). SymphonyCare, the WHIO’s technical vendor and a data warehouse and analytics solution provider for healthcare organizations, completed the QECP technical requirement.

The CMS Qualified Entity Program (also known as the Medicare Data Sharing for Performance Measurement Program) enables organizations to receive Medicare Parts A and B medical claims data and Part D prescription drug claims data for use in evaluating provider performance. Organizations approved as QEs are required to use the Medicare data to produce and publicly disseminate CMS-approved reports on provider performance.

“When we selected SymphonyCare as our data partner to modernize our platform and analytics capabilities, we were confident that their commitment to patient privacy and data security would help us achieve QE certification in our new technical environment,” said Dana Richardson, CEO of WHIO. “Our data contributors and customers can be confident that we have the controls in place for privacy, security, confidentiality and processing of sensitive customer data.”

WellStackTM, the foundation of WHIO’s all-payer claims database, is SymphonyCare’s enterprise data warehouse that manages multiple data sources and provides a single source-of-truth to produce essential business intelligence on Wisconsin’s health care delivery system.

“QE certification means the WellStack platform successfully demonstrated it meets rigorous privacy and security regulations as well as industry-defined standards related to data integration,” said Sal Braico, COO of SymphonyCare. “We look forward to continuing to work with the WHIO to support important quality, safety and cost-efficiency reporting for the state of Wisconsin.”

Headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, SymphonyCare is an innovative healthcare data management company that partners with organizations looking to improve data quality and efficiency of care. In addition to WellStackTM, SymphonyCare’s integrated applications include EmpowerTM, a patient/provider portal and engagement suite, NavigateTM, an award-winning population management suite and MedBeaconTM, a full medication management suite. Together, these comprehensive sets of tools enable organizations to improve patient engagement and care quality in addition to clinical, financial and operational outcomes.

Rebel Converting Triples Initial Donation, Commits to Making 3.5 Million Face Mask Kits

To help meet the continual increased need, Rebel Converting owner Mike Kryshak announced today the company would increase its donation to 3.5 million face mask kits.

Rebel Converting, a Saukville-based manufacturer of hospital-grade disinfectant wipes, is more than doubling its initial donation of face mask kits in Wisconsin. Earlier in the month, the company shifted production to meet the growing need for personal protective equipment.

Since the initial donation of a million face mask kits in April, demand for face masks has exponentially grown with daily requests pouring in from hospitals and clinics, EMTs, first responders, emergency food workers, city bus drivers, nonprofits and retirement homes.

To help meet the continual increased need, Rebel Converting owner Mike Kryshak announced today the company would increase its donation to 3.5 million face mask kits.

How did the Milwaukee Million Mask Challenge begin?

After learning of the shortage of masks nationwide and how it was affecting Milwaukee, Thaddeus Kryshak, a recent graduate in engineering and physics from the University of Miami, spoke to his father Mike Kryshak, owner of Rebel Converting about how they might be able to produce facemasks using the materials that they were already using to produce hospital-grade disinfectant wipes. Thaddeus then developed a way to convert the same material used to manufacture hospital-grade disinfectant wipes into a face mask that is similar to a surgical mask.

Rebel is donating enough of the mask kits to produce 3.5 million masks. Additionally, Rebel is supplying the materials to Wisconsin manufacturers that are donating the manpower and space to assemble the masks. Shoemaker Allen Edmonds, along with sailboat hardware and accessory manufacturer Harken, are sewing thousands of masks each week. Allen Edmonds alone anticipates 100,000 masks produced by the end of this week.

National Expansion

What began as a local initiative is now expanding nationally. Recently, Rebel began donating mask “straps” to major national retailers whose tailors are sewing them and working with health care systems to distribute them nationally. So far, those masks have been distributed to Washington, Oregon, Texas and California. Plans are currently underway to expand to New York, Illinois, New Jersey, Washington DC and Florida.

Milwaukee Nonprofits Band Together to Organize Hundreds of Volunteers

Multiple nonprofits and community organizations have banded together to form the Milwaukee Civic Response Team thanks to leadership from the United Way of Greater Milwaukee and Waukesha Counties, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, and the City of Milwaukee. The team provides project strategy, funding and volunteer management for a campaign called MaskUpMKE – a social awareness campaign that was initiated by Rebel & Ignite Change that encourages Milwaukeeans to wear face masks when they go out.

As part of the MaskUpMke effort, UniteMKE and the Office of Violence Prevention at City of Milwaukee Department of Health mobilized to get masks to individuals standing in line at the polls during the controversial election last week. UniteMKE also got them into the hands of community health workers and immune-compromised.

Other nonprofits, like Just One More Ministry, are taking an active role by organizing their own volunteers and have already assembled 200,000 masks to-date, with another 400,000 masks currently in assembly.

Medical College of Wisconsin Assist in Distribution

Locally, staff and medical students from the Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Institute and the Medical College of Wisconsin have coordinated the assembly and distribution of nearly 200,000 masks, triaging urgent requests for masks to front line health care, police, fire and rescue workers, as well as over 50 community-based organizations and underserved communities. These early efforts are contributing to flattening the curve of COVID-19 spread in Milwaukee. Last week, the team began working on creating a nearly touch-free distribution point for the masks throughout the Metro-Milwaukee area.

More information on how companies and individuals can help with the Million Mask Challenge is available at rebelconverting.com

About Rebel Converting

Rebel converts giant rolls of advanced nonwoven fabrics into wet wipes that fit inside canisters, buckets and dispensers that allow end users to clean everything from operating rooms to shopping carts. We source major industrial brands and don’t sell our product to the any market under our own brand label. To do so would be a conflict of interest, the way we see it. We also believe in true partnerships saving our customers money, even when it takes money out of our own pockets in the short term. From the start, we have believed passionately in giving back to our communities – as do our family of great, experienced employees. Get to know us. We are the rebels with a cause.

*About the 100 Million Mask Challenge

The 100 Million Masks Challenge was launched by Providence health care network, Renton WA. The torch has now been passed to many other organizations, including the American Hospital Association. Locally, in the Metro-Milwaukee area, Rebel Converting has committed to producing enough kits to make 2.5 million masks for the medical and nonprofit community serving those most at-risk of contracting COVID-19.

Survey from Testing.com Reveals Millennials are More Likely to Ignore Safety Guidelines, If Tested Positive for COVID-19

News Image

Testing.com, a trusted informational guide for medical lab testing and at-home screening, has published a survey about how Americans are responding to safety recommendations from the government and public health officials. The study examines responses from adults ages 18 to 55+ and identifies Millennials as the group least likely to change routines or practice social distancing. The survey also compares reported behavior patterns among Generation X and Baby Boomers.

According to experts at Testing.com, the recent study indicates a disparity in how people from different age groups are changing daily activities and following safety guidelines. Among Millennials, 1 out of 4 said they would not self-quarantine if tested positive for COVID-19 and more than 30 percent said they would still leave home even if they had symptoms. Whereas, over 85 percent of Baby Boomers, age 55 and older, and 75 percent of Generation Xers would completely self-quarantine if they had coronavirus symptoms. The survey includes responses from 1,209 Americans across all three generational groups.

Pitch Well 2020 Winners Announced

“The need for disruptive innovation in health and wellness is more relevant now than ever before, and this inaugural event highlights the entrepreneurial spirit and energy that exists in this unprecedented time,” said Chetan Bagga, CEO of Archetype.

Archetype Solutions Group and WELCOA (The Wellness Council of America) partnered to host a virtual pitch competition called Pitch Well, on April 20, 2020, to find the top innovative early-stage business in the employee health and wellness space. The day-long event featured a packed agenda with the pitch competition in the morning and expert panel discussions on the “Importance of Regional Ecosystems” and “Scaling a Business” into the afternoon.

Over 350 companies were considered to pitch for the $100,000 in equity funding, access to Archetype’s host of expert resources and world-class ecosystem, and the opportunity to leverage WELCOA’s expansive network of health and wellness professionals and organizations. Finalists submitted a 5-minute video overview of their solution and were given additional time for Q&A with the judges asked on a live stream. The pitch competition was hosted by a panel of esteemed judges including Ian Fitzpatrick, Chief Strategy Officer of Archetype, Colleen Reilly SVP of Business Development for Immersive Worlds, Margaret Dolan, President & CEO of Launch Tennessee, and Shawn Orenstein, Managing Principal of OneDigital Health and Benefits.

“The need for disruptive innovation in health and wellness is more relevant now than ever before, and this inaugural event highlights the entrepreneurial spirit and energy that exists in this unprecedented time. The live stream format exceeded our expectations and we had record turnout drawing over 200 attendees from across the globe,” said Chetan Bagga, CEO of Archetype.

In the end, two organizations left with investments. The first $25,000 went to Employee Cycle and the second investment of $100,000 — with the title of “Top Innovator at Pitch Well 2020” — went to Mytonomy, a novel CRM for Health Engagement. In addition to the $100,000 investment, Mytonomy will gain access to a host of services offered by the event hosts to accelerate its business.

At the heart of Mytonomy’s CRM is the Patient Experience Cloud which enables healthcare’s digital front door. Leveraging an advanced data model, Mytonomy engages members through high-quality video content, surveys, and virtual communication tools. Mytonomy’s video library includes over 1,500 originally produced microlearning videos, which results in comparatively high engagement rates (80-90%) in historically poorly engaged populations.

“It was an honor to pitch amongst such a talented group of entrepreneurs. Working with Archetype and WELCOA at each step of the Pitch Competition has been seamless and highly professional. We were thrilled to win the Grand Prize and will use the prize money to invest in our expansion into the employer market,” said Anjali Kataria, CEO & Co-founder.

All six companies that made it through to participate in the live event received access to WELCOA’s Premier Provider Network and access to the resources within Archetype’s ecosystem. The event was initially planned to be in New Orleans. Because that was no longer an option, $10,000 in sponsorship proceeds were donated to the New Orleans Business Alliance COVID-19 Relief Fund which benefits New Orleans gig economy workers who have lost their source of income.

WELCOA’s CEO and co-host of the event, Ryan Picarella, had this to say in closing: “Even in the dark days that we are in and these challenging times, it is inspiring to see these organizations and individuals keep up with the changing needs to help people be well. This is just the beginning, and I’m truly excited to see how all of these businesses continue to grow.”

Illinois Manufacturer Supplies Medical Dividers to Hospitals Worldwide

clear room dividers in front of a reception desk

Reception Barriers

During the past few months, the Coronavirus pandemic has created a need for adaptive hospitals and medical facilities. Since they can harbor countless germs while treating such an infectious disease, most hospitals have been looking for ways to minimize contagion. These facilities need as many tools as possible to maintain social distancing when their patients aren’t receiving direct care. The official CDC COVID-19 Guidelines even recommend installing a physical barrier to limit close contact between patients and staff.

In response to the social distancing need, Screenflex Room Dividers has been providing Plexiglass Medical Dividers to healthcare facilities across the country. The Screenflex Clear Room Dividers are freestanding and portable devices that can be used in many areas of a hospital. The transparent surface creates a protective shield from germs and viruses, while still allowing the medical staff and patient to communicate freely.

These clear acrylic partitions come in two lengths; a 3’4″ single panel unit or a 10’0″ three-panel unit. The dividers rest on self-leveling casters, allowing them to travel easily over any surface with exceptional stability. The casters also lock with the press of a pedal holding the divider in place. Depending on quantity, orders ship within 3-5 business days ARO and arrive fully assembled, ready to use.

By supplying these Clear Dividers for hospital check-in areas and other public-serving spaces, Screenflex is contributing to the cause of containing the virus in accordance with CDC guidelines.

Screenflex is the #1 provider of high-quality portable room dividers and continues to be a trusted supplier among facility managers. To find out more information, please visit http://www.screenflex.com or call 855-960-6020.

S.S. White Technologies Inc./SHUKLA Medical, A Florida Manufacturer, Reaches Out to Poor Workers in Hometown in India

The Coronavirus has created untold sufferings globally. The prime minister of India declared a lockdown for the entire country of India to combat the global pandemic of the Coronavirus. This has made life extremely difficult for some of the day workers in India. These workers would purchase groceries each day from their daily wages. Many non-resident Indians (NRI) living in the United States are making efforts to be helpful to people in need in India. One such person is Rahul Shukla. Rahul Shukla is the owner and president of S.S. White Technologies and Shukla Medical in St. Petersburg, Florida where they manufacture aerospace and automotive parts as well as orthopedic extraction tools.

Rahul Shukla, upon hearing of the plight of poor day wage earners in the district where their subsidiary is located, called the district collector (county commissioner) and asked how he and his company could help. The collector explained that not too far from where the S.S. White building is located in Gujarat State, India, there is a large community of day wage earners who work in salt farms. The wages are meager and the workers are paid on a daily basis. Since the lockdown, there was no work and these salt farmers had no money to buy food supplies or make meals for their families. “Would S.S. White/SHUKLA Medical be willing to make some food kits and donate them to us so that we can distribute them to the salt workers?” asked the collector. Rahul Shukla did not hesitate for one second. He said, “We will make 2,000 such kits and distribute them.” He promptly called his top management team and asked how soon they could assemble the kits. “It will be done by the end of tomorrow,” said Ahmed Pathan, one of the managers in India. Even though the country was under a total lockdown in India, the S.S. White/SHUKLA management team obtained necessary permission to open the plant for one day, purchased bulk food supplies, and created assembly lines to prepare 2,000 kits each containing 10 lbs of wheat flour, 10 lbs of rice, 10 lbs of lentils, 10 lbs of rice-lentil mix called Khichdi, a half a gallon of cooking oil, 2 lbs of sugar, and some spices.

As per the suggestion of the district collector, the kits were distributed to the poorest of the poor workers in a small village of Kuda where many workers make their living by working in salt farms.

S.S. White’s President did not stop there. The company gave the same ration kit to its 350 employees and to all of their contract workers. Mr. Shukla also gave one hundred thousand rupees ($1,500 USD) to the Chief Minister’s relief fund, in the spirit of doing something not only for the people of the country where we grew up but also for the people of the state where we have lived.

In 2017, S.S. White India had purchased an ambulance, fully equipped with ICU facilities. The company makes the ambulance available free of cost to local residents when a patient needs to be transferred to a larger hospital 80 miles away or further. During the Coronavirus pandemic, the company supplied the ambulance to the County Collector, Mr. K. Rajesh’s, disposal to allow seriously ill patients to be readily transferred to larger, better-equipped hospitals.

“Many people have money,” said Vipin Toliya, the Mayor of Surendranagar, where the S.S. White branch is located, “but what is noteworthy is Mr. Shukla called us from the USA and asked us how he and his company could help.” It is the goodness of kind people like Rahul Shukla and companies like S.S. White and SHUKLA Medical that reinstates our faith in humanity.”
