WesternU to open Doctor of Physical Therapy program in Oregon

[ad_1]

Western University of Health Sciences will welcome its first class of Doctor of Physical Therapy students to its WesternU Oregon campus in Lebanon, Oregon in 2022.

WesternU’s College of Health Sciences (CHS) is assembling the Department of Physical Therapy Education (DPTE) team that will make this a reality, led by CHS Interim Dean Dee Schilling, PT, PhD, FNAP, and DPTE Oregon Chair and Associate Professor Chad Lairamore, PT, PhD, FNAP.

“It is a pleasure to welcome Dr. Chad Lairamore as Chair of our new Oregon Physical Therapy program,” said WesternU President Daniel R. Wilson, MD, PhD. “Not only does Dr. Lairamore have precisely the right professional background to lead this important new endeavor, he also has a natural affinity to the WesternU ethos of humanistic science.”

Faculty must be in place 18 months before the program starts, per accreditation requirements. CHS plans to have 12 faculty in Lebanon in addition to Lairamore, along with 60 students in the first class. The faculty will create a curriculum separate from the DPT program in Pomona, California.

“Per accreditation, we must have independent programs with independent chairs, and we must answer the question, ‘What is your niche? Why should we have another PT program?’” Schilling said. “The niche is really rural health and looking at what that means and how do we best serve this population.”

“We are looking at rural health and potentially telemedicine to better serve that population, especially when they are hard to reach,” Lairamore said. “The other thing we are looking into is creating a blended learning curriculum that incorporates online and web-based education with in-class active learning. My vision is to have less lecture and more hands-on doing during in-class activities.”

CHS is also planning to introduce an occupational therapy (OT) program in 2023.

“OT and PT traditionally are very much together on teams, especially in the rehabilitation world,” Lairamore said. “I see a lot of potential for collaboration there.”

Two members of CHS’s Pomona team will move to WesternU Oregon. Assistant Professor Lindsey Liggan, PT, DPT ’13, WCS, PRPC, is a Women’s Health Certified Specialist (WCS).

“I thought it was an amazing opportunity to build and grow something new,” Liggan said. “And women’s health and public health is an area of need in that area. It will be a different change of pace and an opportunity to do different things than what I’m doing here. Plus, Oregon is beautiful. Who doesn’t want to live there?”

DPTE Manager Carrie Rogers, MS, will become director of operations and assistant dean of student affairs for the program in Lebanon.

“I’m very passionate about students, and that’s why serving as assistant dean of student affairs is important to me,” Rogers said. “I think the importance of students always should be our top priority, so I’m an advocate for them whenever I can be and whenever I need to be.”

Rogers has wanted to move to Oregon as soon as she heard the opportunity was available.

“It’s going to be fun. We get to develop the curriculum. We get to help students grow and develop something from scratch,” Rogers said. “We have a culture in this college and Lindsey and I going to the Oregon campus brings that culture with us. This is who we are and this is who we want to be.”

“And then you have Dr. Lairamore coming in with a new perspective,” Schilling said. “It really is this beautiful blending of minds and worlds and creativity. It’s very fun to have people who are visionary and who are passionate. I have no concerns about where this is going to go and how it’s going to end because I am just so confident in this team.

I’m excited about their future, the opportunity for future students and the future of WesternU and this program as it is definitely going to be groundbreaking.”

Children’s National Hospital today dedicated its Emergency Department waiting area as the Capital Area Credit Unions for Kids Waiting Area. The naming recognizes the credit unions’ more than 20 years of philanthropic support for the hospital and its commitment to raise another $3 million. This support helps ensure that children in the region can receive world-class care regardless of illness, injury or ability to pay.

“We are grateful for the steadfast partnership of Capital Area Credit Unions,” said DeAnn Marshall, president of the Children’s National Hospital Foundation. “Their generous commitment helps to ensure stronger futures for children living in the Washington region and beyond.”

Local area credit union employees and members have raised more than $5 million to date for Children’s National through the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run & 5K Run-Walk, golf tournaments and other events.

“As credit unions, we are known for our collaborative spirit and our commitment to the communities we serve,” said John Bratsakis, president and CEO, MD|DC Credit Union Association. “Working with Children’s National Hospital, the contributions made by credit unions and our business partners help connect young patients and their families with the best medical care and support when they need it.”

Next year, Children’s National will celebrate 150 years of caring for children. The hospital opened in downtown Washington, D.C., with 12 beds to care for Civil War orphans. Today, it is one of the country’s top-six pediatric hospitals and treats patients from around the world. Last year, its Emergency Department had nearly 120,000 visits.

D.C., Maryland and Virginia credit unions support Children’s National under the national brand, Credit Unions for Kids, a Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals partner. Since the partnership began in 1996, credit unions nationwide have raised more than $185 million for pediatric health.

WEDI Applauds Rescinding of Health Plan Identifier (HPID) by CMS

[ad_1]

“WEDI, along with other health care industry stakeholders, has played a significant role in guiding direction for the HPID implementation planning.” – Charles Stellar, President and CEO of WEDI

WEDI, the nation’s leading nonprofit authority on the use of health IT to create efficiencies in health care information exchange, today applauded the rescinding by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) of the Unique Health Plan Identifier (HPID) under the Administrative Simplification provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).

On October 28, 2019, HHS published in the Federal Register the final rule CMS-0054-F. This Final Rule amends 45 CFR 162.103 and repeals 45 CFR 162.502-514 to rescind the adoption of the Health Plan Identifier (HPID) and Other Entity Identifier (OEID). The final rule eliminates the regulatory requirement for health plans to obtain and use an HPID and eliminates the voluntary acquisition and use of the OEID. The final rule also simplifies the process for deactivating the existing identifiers to minimize operational costs for covered entities. On or after the effective date of this final rule – December 27, 2019 – any active HPID or OEID will be automatically deactivated in the Health Plan or Other Entity Enumeration System (HPOES).

“WEDI, along with other health care industry stakeholders, has played a significant role in guiding direction for the HPID implementation planning,” said Charles Stellar, President and CEO of WEDI. “After it became clear in the early years after the rule was issued, that the HPID and its implementation was going to be very complex with little return on investment to the industry, WEDI further engaged the industry, resulting in modifying our comment to support no implementation of HPID was needed so we applaud the decision by HHS.”

  • On July 22, 2015, Jean Narcisi, then-Chair of the WEDI Board of Directors issued a comment letter to Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Acting Administrator Andrew Slavitt to request information regarding the requirements for the Health Plan Identifier, while sharing extensive feedback and guidance from WEDI members and other industry stakeholders.
  • On May 3, 2017, Laurie Darst, then-Chair of the WEDI Board of Directors and Co-Chair of the WEDI Health Plan Identifier Workgroup issued a statement on behalf of WEDI to the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS) Subcommittee on Standards that HPID not be used in transactions and that the HPID enumeration was not needed at all.

About WEDI

WEDI is the leading authority on the use of health IT to improve health care information exchange in order to enhance the quality of care, improve efficiency, and reduce costs of our nation’s health care system. WEDI was formed in 1991 by the Secretary of Health and Human Services and was designated in the 1996 HIPAA legislation as an advisor to HHS. WEDI’s membership includes a broad coalition of organizations, including: hospitals, providers, health plans, vendors, government agencies, consumers, not-for-profit organizations, and standards development organizations. Designs for Health Sees a Ketogenic Diet as an Alternative that May Benefit People with Type 2 Diabetes

[ad_1]

A leading practitioner-channel dietary supplement company

A ketogenic diet will help the body become more metabolically flexible and able to efficiently generate energy from the ketones produced.

Designs For Health (DFH) – a leading practitioner-channel dietary supplement company, is using its science-based nutrition philosophy to raise awareness about the critical role of a healthy lifestyle in the prevention of type 2 diabetes, which research suggests can also help reverse its progress. This is very encouraging, especially since 30 million Americans have diabetes, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CVC).

Low carbohydrate and ketogenic diets are a slam-dunk for type 2 diabetes, assures Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS) and DFH spokesperson Amy Berger, who suggests that “If you have a condition defined by high blood sugar, one potential solution is self-evident: avoid foods that raise blood sugar the most. For most people, this means refined sugar and sugar in general, but for many it also includes starchy foods that might be generally wholesome and nutritious, but which are simply too high in carbohydrates for people with type 2 diabetes.”

Berger notes that the American Diabetes Association, in a consensus report published in May 2019, acknowledged that, “Reducing overall carbohydrate intake for individuals with diabetes has demonstrated the most evidence for improving glycemia and may be applied in a variety of eating patterns that meet individual needs and preferences.”

Jason Bosley-Smith, MS, LDN, CNS, FDN and Director of Education at Designs for Health (DFH), explains that “If you have been diagnosed with diabetes or if your physician has shared that your blood work indicates a pre-diabetic state, transitioning to a ketogenic diet will reduce high blood sugar levels by lowering the carbohydrates you consume. With less sugar and carbohydrates being introduced into your body, your cells will begin responding better to hormonal signals that help regulate your metabolism,” adding that, “this may help you shift away from insulin resistance – a physiological state where your body is unable to effectively utilize sugar or glucose for energy production.”

As an alternative, Bosley-Smith explains that a ketogenic diet will help the body become more “metabolically flexible” and able to efficiently generate energy from the ketones produced. This insulin resistant state is associated not only with diabetes, but also with weight gain and other complications that accompany it. Research indicates that, while not necessarily the primary goal of a ketogenic diet, many individuals lose weight when they reduce and restrict carbohydrate intake and adopt a keto approach.

For this regime, individuals should focus on low-carb meals featuring non-starchy vegetables, moderate amounts of protein from meats and poultry, and plenty of healthy fats from foods such as olive and coconut oil, fish, and nuts. There are also great keto snack choices that will help curb sweet cravings. DFH recently launched their KTO-360TM product line made with the keto-friendly, next-generation sweetener, Allulose.

There has been progress around the disease nationwide; researchers reported earlier this year that new cases of diagnosed diabetes dropped 35% while no increase was detected in total cases (CVC Report). Part of this is due to increasing awareness, changes in diet and physical activity, as well as diagnostic and screening practices.

New Podcast Sponsored by Asymmetrex Increases Awareness to the Need for Stem Cell Dose in Stem Cell Treatments

[ad_1]

Asymmetrex Sponsors Podcast on “Counting Stem Cells for a New Era of Medicine”

Dose is essential for stem cell medicine as well.

In October, Massachusetts stem cell biotechnology company Asymmetrex launched a new podcast to provide information to patients about a poorly disclosed deficiency in stem cell treatments. Throughout stem cell medical practice, stem cell treatments are given without knowing the dose of the treating stem cells. This problem affects all patients receiving stem cell treatments, including patients receiving approved treatments in routine clinical practice, patients volunteering for experimental treatments in FDA-authorized clinical trials, and patients obtaining unapproved treatments in private stem cell clinics.

The costs and dangers of unknown stem cell dose in treatments are significant. Stem cell clinical trials cannot be interpreted without knowing the treatment dose, leading to huge wastes of both federal and private clinical research dollars. In the case of manufactured stem cells, many treatments may contain very few or no stem cells at all. It is impossible for doctors to improve treatments without knowing the stem cell dose. Stem cell donors for approved treatments like blood stem cell transplantation are scarce. Knowing the stem cell dose would allow doctors to know when a treatment sample has enough stem cells to treat more than one patient; or when it does not have enough to treat even a single patient. In the second case, not knowing the stem cell dose can result in the death of children treated for leukemia when unknowingly they receive an umbilical cord blood transplant with too few blood stem cells to save them.

Earlier this year, the FDA recognized the pressing need for stem cell dose in stem cell medicine. The agency’s Standards Coordinating Body for Regenerative Medicine (SCB) listed stem cell dose determination as a priority for needed standards for stem cell medicine. Dose is a fundamental principle for the discovery, development, and administration of quality medicines. Asymmetrex Director James L. Sherley, M.D., Ph.D., who is featured in the new podcast, says that, “Dose is essential for stem cell medicine as well. The new podcast has the goal of informing the end users of stem cell treatments: the patients, their doctors, their families, and their advocates, including the FDA. When the people most impacted by these treatments understand that knowing the dose of stem cells is just as important as knowing the dose of their other medicines, they will be empowered to demand this essential certification of the integrity of their stem cell treatments.”

The first episode of the podcast, “Counting Stem Cells For A New Era Of Medicine,” aired online on October 17. The third episode of the biweekly, 6-episode series is scheduled for airing November 12. Each episode features an interview of Asymmetrex Director Sherley by podcast producer Jordan Rich. Mr. Rich guides Dr. Sherley through a discussion of questions that reveal the current challenges that Asymmetrex is addressing to achieve full adoption of stem cell dose as a routine practice in stem cell medicine. The series also highlights other significant applications for stem cell counting in drug development and environmental health science. In conjunction with this educational effort, the company is also sponsoring a study on its website to evaluate the current state of public, academic, and industry knowledge of coming changes in stem cell medicine related to the adoption of stem cell dose.

About Asymmetrex

Asymmetrex, LLC is a Massachusetts life sciences company with a focus on developing technologies to advance stem cell medicine. Asymmetrex’s founder and director, James L. Sherley, M.D., Ph.D. is an internationally recognized expert on the unique properties of adult tissue stem cells. The company’s patent portfolio contains biotechnologies that solve the two main technical problems – production and quantification – that have stood in the way of successful commercialization of human adult tissue stem cells for regenerative medicine and drug development. In addition, the portfolio includes novel technologies for isolating cancer stem cells and producing induced pluripotent stem cells for disease research purposes. Asymmetrex markets the first technology for determination of the dose and quality of tissue stem cell preparations (the “AlphaSTEM Test™”) for use in stem cell transplantation therapies and pre-clinical drug evaluations.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month

[ad_1]

The National Lung Cancer Roundtable (NLCRT) has expanded its portal of resources to help Americans fight lung cancer. Efrén J. Flores, Staff Radiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital, teamed with the American College of Radiology (ACR) and YourUpdateTV to discuss the initiative during National Lung Cancer Awareness month.

A video accompanying this announcement is available at: https://youtu.be/Bpb0qu7V5mA

This year more than 220,000 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer. More than 140,000 will die of the disease — more than will die from breast, colon and prostate cancer combined. Please know that:

  • Anyone can get lung cancer. 65% of people newly diagnosed with lung cancer have never smoked or are former smokers. 20% have no history of tobacco use at all.
  • If you smoke, talk to your doctor to get support to stop smoking. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer.
  • Lung cancer was once considered a terminal diagnosis, but today new treatments are improving survival for many patients.
  • If you are a current or former smoker – ages 55-to-80 – talk to your health care provider about getting an annual lung cancer screening exam. This low-dose C-T or “CAT” scan is the only test proven to significantly reduce lung cancer deaths and is covered by Medicare and private insurance for those who qualify.

For more information, visit the National Lung Cancer Roundtable website at NLCRT.org.
