Consumers Spent Nearly $1 Billion More on Housewares and Small Appliances in 2019, Reports NPD

“Consumer needs related to the home will always be there, but we need to make sure we are finding the best ways to meet those needs as they evolve, and communicate our value to the consumer,” said Joe Derochowski, home industry advisor at NPD.

Consumers Spent Nearly $1 Billion More on Housewares and Small Appliances in 2019, Reports NPD

U.S. dollar sales of small appliances grew 4% in 2019, and sales of non-electric housewares increased 2% compared to 2018, according to The NPD Group, a leading global information company. Combined, this growth amounted to an additional $952 million in sales for the industry in 2019, demonstrating the consumer’s continued focus on enhancing their homes, and the core needs related to healthy living, convenience, sustainability, entertainment, experience, and taste that are being addressed by these products.

“Home products continue to be a bright spot at retail because of their relevance to the key consumer trends driving growth,” said Joe Derochowski, home industry advisor at NPD. “Products for the home have the ability to meet the demands and desires of the key life moments in the consumer, and that has been the primary driver of the home industry’s growth over the past five years.”

Healthy living and convenience were once again front-and-center in the top performing small appliances of 2019, spanning kitchen electrics, personal care, and home environment. Air fryers, hot air stylers, and robotic vacuums accounted for 42% of the small appliance industry’s sales gains, each capturing more than $100 million in incremental sales for the year, reflecting significant double and triple-digit growth.

The top non-electrics housewares growth drivers of 2019 further demonstrated the consumer’s increased focus on how they live, both in and outside of the home. Dollar sales of portable beverageware – offering the consumer the ability to connect the dots between convenience, sustainability, healthy living, and potentially cost-efficiency – increased 6% compared to 2018. A nod to today’s more casual consumer aesthetic, housewares dinnerware sales grew 11% in 2019. Canister and jar food storage deliver a sustainable and potentially aesthetically pleasing way to go beyond the basic food storage function, and captured 13% more dollars than in 2018.

“The home industry is in a unique position to contribute to the consumer’s life on many levels, from the basics of cooking and cleaning to enhancing their appearance, whether personal or through design and decor,” added Derochowski. “Consumer needs related to the home will always be there, but we need to make sure we are finding the best ways to meet those needs as they evolve, and communicate our value to the consumer.”

Cybereason is Joined by Law Enforcement Officials in an Election Security Exercise Before First Democratic Primary

News Image

Members of state and federal law enforcement agencies were on hand recently at Operation Blackout New Hampshire

Cybereason, creators of the leading Cyber Defense Platform, together with federal officials from DHS and US Service Service and Manchester, Concord and Nashua Police Officers, recently participated in Operation Blackout New Hampshire, a simulation of an election day hack in a fictitious US city, Adversaria.

The goal of the tabletop exercise was to examine and advance the organizational responsiveness of government entities to a hacking group’s attempts to undermine democratic institutions and systems of governance in the republic.

Most election hacking discussions and exercises focus on the mechanics and minutiae of hacking election equipment or contaminating and violating the integrity of voter rolls. This exercise explicitly excluded hacking election equipment from consideration to focus instead on everything else in the electoral system.

“Though the red team was able to disrupt the election, the blue team effectively used their existing capabilities across the state and federal levels to main public safety. Law enforcement officials created open lines with media sources and social media companies to limit misinformation being spread, which was crucial in ensuring the integrity of all votes,” said Israel Barak, Cybereason’s Chief Information Security Officer and exercise facilitator.

Actionable Insights for Law Enforcement

*Communication is Key: Use media effectively to counteract the effects of misinformation through other channels.

*Use Multiple Channels: Have several alternate means of communication. *Assume that cell phones can be compromised and social media is unreliable.

*Coordinate with major providers of infrastructure and transportation ahead of time. Understanding where things like the power grid are vulnerable can help prevent potential attacks on key utilities.

*Collaborate with Other Government Agencies: Take advantage of government resources to augment existing law enforcement and provide additional intelligence.

*Develop Playbooks: Run specific-to-your city tabletop exercises that account for existing idiosyncrasies in your community, city, and other relationships.

*Take Region Into Account: As with any good police work, understand the regional nuances and sensitivities in the community to adequately prepare for when they will be manipulated or put at odds.

About Cybereason

Radiant Presents Study of Tristimulus and Bayer Pattern Color Filter Accuracy for Display Measurement at electronic displays Conference 2020

Radiant Presents Study of Tristimulus and Bayer Pattern Color Filter Accuracy for Display Measurement at electronic displays Conference 2020

Depending on the color filter method, a measurement system calibrated to a single pixel’s output color may provide greater accuracy for calculating a given color when variations occur.

Radiant Vision Systems, a leading provider of photometric imaging solutions for light and display measurement, announces that it will present at the electronic displays Conference (edC) 2020 at NürnbergMesse in Nuremberg, Germany. Jens Jørgen Jensen, Vice President of Product Development at Radiant, will present “Evaluating Tristimulus and Bayer Pattern Color Filter Accuracy for Display Measurement Based on CIE Color-Matching Functions.” This technical presentation will be held as part of Session 14: Display Measurements taking place on the second day of the conference, Thursday, 27 February, from 2:35-2:55 P.M. (14:35-14:55).

An imaging system’s color filter is a key determiner of color measurement accuracy. Some filters provide a system response that is a close match to CIE color-matching functions (referenced in CIE 015:2018 Colorimetry), improving the calculation of CIE color coordinates when calibration and software functions are applied to measure color values across displays. This is particularly important when high levels of variability exist in a display. Non-uniformity across LED-based displays (for example, LED and microLED displays) must be accurately measured across pixel bright states, both to characterize the output at each pixel and also to apply pixel-level correction factors. Depending on the color filter method, a measurement system calibrated to a single pixel’s output color may provide greater accuracy for calculating a given color when variations occur from pixel to pixel, or within a single pixel powered at different levels of current.

At the edC, Radiant will present the results of its technical evaluation of color measurement systems to compare the accuracy of two filter systems according to CIE color-matching functions: a tristimulus filter system and a Bayer pattern filter system. As a baseline, the study presents the amount of color variation observed for LEDs driven at different levels of current (as measured in Cx, Cy by a spectroradiometer). Then, data is provided to show comparative values measured by each color filter system calibrated to a base output value for each colored LED. The results illustrate how each filter technology tolerates variation in each target color, and suggest effective color measurement methods per color for LED-based displays whose pixels deviate from a calibrated value.

Presenting this technical topic on behalf of Radiant Vision Systems is Jens Jensen, Vice President of Radiant’s product development teams responsible for camera hardware, firmware, product software, calibration software, and fixtures. Jensen received a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark. He spent 23 years making measurement systems as the technical lead of the DANAK-accredited photometric and colorimetric laboratory in Denmark, and later joined Radiant where he has made significant contributions to the company’s engineering development for the last nine years.
