Joint Study by European Patent Office (EPO) and International Energy Agency (IEA) Shows Asia Ahead of U.S. in Battery Technology Innovation

News Image

The rapid and sustained rise in electricity storage innovation shows that inventors and businesses are tackling the challenge of the energy transition. The patent data reveals that while Asia has a strong lead in this strategic industry, the U.S. and Europe can count on a rich innovation ecosystem,

According to a joint study published today by the European Patent Office (EPO) and the International Energy Agency (IEA), improving the capacity of electricity storage solutions is playing a key role in the transition to clean energy technologies. Between 2005 and 2018, patenting activity in batteries and other electricity storage technologies grew at an average annual rate of 14% worldwide, four times faster than the average for all technology fields (3.5%). U.S. firms are lagging, with the U.S. in fifth place behind Japan, South Korea, Europe and China in terms of the number of international patents in battery technology.

The report shows that in the early 2000s, the U.S. was still the second most active patent-filing country, with only Japanese firms filing more patents in this field. But in 2010-11 South Korea and Europe overtook the U.S., as has China more recently.

Looking at the longer term from 2000-18 shows a different ranking: the U.S. holds a share of 14.5% of all patent applications in batteries (No. 4) compared to 6.9% for China (No. 5). Japan has been dominating the technology with a 40.9% of all patents in batteries in that period.

Overall, more than 7,000 international patent families related to electricity storage were published in 2018, up from 1,000 in the year 2000. Between 2000 and 2018, nearly 90% of the inventions aiming to improve electricity storage focus on advancements in batteries, in particular lithium-ion (Li-ion) cells used in consumer electronic devices and electric cars, far outweighing electrical (9%), thermal (5%) and mechanical (3%) electricity storage solutions. In 2018, innovation in Li-ion cells accounted for 45% of patenting activity related to battery cells, compared with just 7% for cells based on other chemistries (e.g. lead acid and nickel).

In Li-ion batteries, the U.S. emerged as the third strongest force: From 2014 to 2018, the country was home to the inventors of 12% of all Li-ion patenting activities globally.

U.S. STRONG IN EMERGING STORAGE TECHNOLOGIES

While the U.S. has lost some ground in patenting battery technologies that are currently the most manufactured, they are stronger in potential next-generation batteries. In the emerging NCA (lithium nickel cobalt aluminium oxide) chemistry for Li-ion batteries, the U.S. is the clear leader with 36% of related international patent families. The current NMC (lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide) chemistry is expected to be replaced in due course with NCA as a promising alternative. NCA batteries are already being used by Panasonic and Tesla in electric vehicles.

In solid-state Li-ion battery patents – which could be an alternative to today’s Li-ion batteries using liquid or polymer gel electrolytes in the next decade – U.S. companies hold a 18% share of all related patents, ranking No. 2 behind Japan. And in Redox flow batteries, the United States is the dominant innovation center, accounting for almost one-third of all international patent applications in that field.

“Electricity storage technology is critical when it comes to meeting the demand for electric mobility and achieving the shift towards renewable energy that is needed if we are to mitigate climate change,” said EPO President António Campinos. “The rapid and sustained rise in electricity storage innovation shows that inventors and businesses are tackling the challenge of the energy transition. The patent data reveals that while Asia has a strong lead in this strategic industry, the U.S. and Europe can count on a rich innovation ecosystem, including a large number of SMEs and research institutions, to help them stay in the race for the next generation of batteries.”

“IEA projections make it clear that energy storage will need to grow exponentially in the coming decades to enable the world to meet international climate and sustainable energy goals. Accelerated innovation will be essential for achieving that growth,” said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol. “By combining the complementary strengths of the IEA and the EPO, this report sheds new light on today’s innovation trends to help governments and businesses make smart decisions for our energy future.”

While innovation in battery technology is still largely concentrated in a limited group of very large companies, in the U.S. smaller companies, universities and public research organisations play a much more significant role than in the other countries leading in battery technology: For the U.S., SMEs account for 34.4% and universities/research organisations for 13.8% of all related patents filed.

Technical progress and mass production in an increasingly mature industry have led to a significant drop in battery prices in recent years – by nearly 90% since 2010 in the case of Li-ion batteries for electric vehicles, and by around two-thirds over the same period for stationary applications, including electricity grid management. In a scenario in which the technological potential for second use of batteries is fully utilized, cost reductions by 2040 would lead to batteries being 70% less expensive than today.

NOTES TO THE EDITORS:

International patent families: The patent analysis in this report is based on the concept of international patent families (IPFs). Each IPF represents a unique invention and includes patent applications filed and published in at least two countries or filed with and published by a regional patent office, as well as published international patent applications. IPFs represent inventions deemed important enough by the inventor to seek protection internationally, and only a relatively small percentage of applications actually meet this threshold. This concept can therefore be used as a sound basis for comparing international innovation activities, as it reduces the biases that may arise when comparing patent applications across different national patent offices.

ABOUT THE EPO

With nearly 7,000 staff, the European Patent Office (EPO) is one of the largest public service institutions in Europe. Headquartered in Munich with offices in Berlin, Brussels, The Hague and Vienna, the EPO was founded with the aim of strengthening co-operation on patents in Europe. Through the EPO’s centralised patent granting procedure, inventors are able to obtain high-quality patent protection in up to 44 countries, covering a market of some 700 million people. The EPO is also the world’s leading authority in patent information and patent searching.

ABOUT THE INTERNATIONAL ENERGY AGENCY

The International Energy Agency (IEA) is at the heart of global dialogue on energy, providing authoritative analysis, data, policy recommendations, and real-world solutions to help countries bring about secure and sustainable energy for all. Taking an all-fuels, all-technologies approach, the IEA advocates policies that enhance the reliability, affordability and sustainability of energy. The IEA is supporting clean energy transitions all over the world in order to help achieve global sustainability goals.

Pratt Miller Large Area Autonomous Disinfecting Vehicle Deployed at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport McNamara Terminal

LAAD-V at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport McNamara Terminal

LAAD-V at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport McNamara Terminal

The LAAD-V is now one of the key components to the “Fly Safe. Fly Ford” campaign taking place at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport, ensuring the safety of the passengers and staff.

In the early months of 2020, the world became victim to the rapidly spreading COVID-19 virus, causing a pandemic of epic proportions, as well as unprecedented shutdowns and public health mandates. One industry that was hard hit was air travel as it slowed to nearly a standstill as airlines and airport facilities scrambled to build proper protocols for safe travel. The adverse health situation provided opportunities for manufacturers and engineering firms to step up and create solutions to combat the disruptive virus pandemic. This type of mobilization and shift in core business has not been seen since the United States entered World War II.

One of the companies on the forefront of creating innovative solutions for safety is Pratt Miller Mobility, a division of Pratt Miller, which is a leading-edge, full-service product development company with roots in championship-winning, professional motorsport programs and a company built on defense, mobility, and innovative industries. Its latest creation is the Large Area Autonomous Disinfecting Vehicle, or LAAD-V for short. The autonomous vehicle is a tool designed to disinfect large areas and Pratt Miller is providing a fleet of LAAD-V robots to keep the McNamara Terminal clean at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW).

The McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport serves as a major hub, providing liftoff to hundreds of national and international locations. The safety of travelers and airline staff is paramount as the industry begins its recovery and the frequency of air travel ramps up dramatically. The LAAD-V is a highly capable autonomous robot that is effective in deploying disinfectant and serves as a beacon of ingenuity in safety for this fight against COVID-19.

The LAAD-V is very unique due to several reasons; most notable is its multi-head electrostatic sprayer that is capable of operating in a large area with complete surface coverage. The spray pattern ensures the surface is completely wrapped in disinfectant, which is an FDA-approved disinfectant that adheres to surfaces, creating exceptional protection from the virus. Electrostatic sprayers offer an advantage over other disinfectant techniques such as fogging and UV-C light. Fogging requires employees to wear respirators and the section be blocked off from the public. The UV-C light technique only offers line-of-sight coverage. The electrostatic sprayers completely wrap the target surface for complete protection. The LAAD-V has a large disinfectant tank, allowing the machine to operate for long periods of time between refills. The vehicle is fully electric and the rechargeable battery powers it for complete daily coverage.

Another LAAD-V specific feature is its sensor and data analytics capabilities, which provides digital reports of its disinfecting progress. The LAAD-V provides real-time coverage information via a web app showing the completed percentage of the target area and if there was a section that couldn’t be properly disinfected. This ensures a guarantee of coverage for the facility management and customers. For example, if a portion of the operating area is blocked due to misplaced equipment or a person occupying the space, the size and location of the failed cleansing is noted on the report so the staff can respond accordingly. The sensors and tracking capabilities allow for the vehicle to have a safe route and avoid bumping into obstacles. This mobility and safety technology allows the LAAD-V to operate without shutting down the facility. The data feedback is also beneficial for facility management to create a business case value for the LAAD-V.

Bringing innovation to mobility during COVID-19 isn’t something one company can shoulder by themselves; it takes unique partnerships to bring the projects to reality. The LAAD-V capabilities were proven during a media day held at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, Michigan in late summer. The event took place thanks to collaboration between Pratt Miller, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), and Planet M. The LAAD-V is now one of the key components to the “Fly Safe. Fly Ford” campaign taking place at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport, ensuring the safety of the passengers and staff. And that relationship with MEDC and Planet M is the contributing factor that has placed a LAAD-V fleet in the McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport.

“We are very thankful and always thrilled to work with MEDC and Planet M. We were in contact with each group early in the process when they redirected some funding from current projects to this COVID-19 solutions funding. Through working with both of them we were able to target pilot locations before landing on the innovation team at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport and at the McNamara Terminal in the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport,” said Christopher Andrews, director of Mobility and Innovation at Pratt Miller Mobility.

The deployment of the LAAD-V is the first of its kind in the United States for a connected, electric and autonomous robot used for disinfecting protocols. Protecting travelers and airline staff doesn’t stop at the Detroit international airport; Pratt Miller Mobility is working on more LAAD-V placements at other airports and large facilities.

Simon Dean, Pratt Miller’s Vice President of Mobility and Innovation properly summed it up, “At Pratt Miller we provide solutions to complex mobility problems. The LAAD-V helps keep travelers and the airport employees safe as the airline industry continues to expand its services following the slowdown.”

NANOBIOFAB Awarded a $250,000 Defense Health Agency SBIR grant

“The driving strategy for Nanobiofab is to build and deliver a high-yield synthesis and discovery platform to the military, sensor vendors and eventually the general medical/healthcare markets.” – Xiaonao Liu, founder, Nanobiofab

Nanobiofab, a Frederick-based nanotechnology startup, was awarded a $250,000 Defense Health Agency (DHA) SBIR Program grant for their, “Inkjet assisted Nano printing sensing platform for high-throughput flexible sensors discovery” proposal.

Nanobiofab has worked continuously to meet the challenge of developing and manufacturing advanced sensing nanomaterials and equipment for the reliable fabrication of wearable and flexible sensors used in medical/health monitoring devices. This grant will be an immense help to Nanobiofab in future research. Nanosensors are creating new opportunities in medical simulation, wearable electronics, epidermal electronic systems, human-machine interfaces, soft robotics, and other health monitoring devices. In the past, the development of new nanosensors was very labor-intensive and time-consuming. Nanobiofab realized early on that the combination of enhanced automatically controlled high-throughput material generation and detection with heightened data processing capabilities, would for the first time, enable highly efficient, highly sensitive, low-cost and reliable nanosensors.

“The driving strategy for Nanobiofab is to build and deliver a high-yield synthesis and discovery platform to the military, sensor vendors and eventually the general medical/healthcare markets. The applications in the Defense, Healthcare/medical simulation, Wearable market, and Clinical/Hospital markets are immense,” says Xiaonao Liu, the founder of the company.

“We are extremely proud of all Nanobiofab’s accomplishments! This DHA SBIR grant will help them accelerate their innovation, and will put them even farther along the path to success,” added Kathie Callahan Brady, the CEO of Frederick Innovative Technology Center Inc. (FITCI), a technology incubator hosting the company. Aside from being a part of the incubator, Nanobiofab has also graduated from FITCI’s The Edge Accelerator in 2019, winning the second overall place in the final Demo Day competition.

There is an unmet need for simulator-type training systems for the monitoring of medical trainees including for diagnosis and surgical skill development. Though mannequins have been shown to create high-quality simulation training in a multitude of different medical procedures and patient cases, they lack the ability to simulate specific battlefield injuries such as burns, tissue trauma, and in some cases, exposure to chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals. To resolve these issues, simulators such as “smart” mannequins were developed to objectively assess the competence of apprentices and provide instant feedback on their performance. To enable “mannequin feedback,” mannequins can be fitted with highly accurate and objective flexible sensors. Some have been integrated into artificial skin pads, watches, bands, and clothes to measure the piercing location, heart rate, body temperature, and pressure applied. However, the multiplicity of sensing needs and sensitivity has not been met to date. Nanosensors have incredible potential to serve in this capacity, as flexible detectors that can fit all geometries. Today’s nanotech has several big challenges, such as limited functionality, stability, healthy geometries, cost, and screening time for desired functionality. Nanobiofab’s AI-Nano platform will resolve these technical issues.

Nanobiofab has built the world’s fastest high-throughput synthesis and discovery platform that offers broader sensing materials, improved sensor robustness, and embedded decision-making intelligence. This is a critical step toward a minimally sized and exceptionally functional product design. That effort greatly accelerates scaled-up high-throughput designs. Nanobiofab can fabricate nanosensor arrays on silica, ceramic and glass substrate to monitor body emitted chemical vapors, which through this, monitors health and disease. Based on the platform, Nanobiofab has successfully discovered a sensor to detect skin emanated volatile organic compounds and has made a wearable device for monitoring body metabolism. “This provides Nanobiofab the development capabilities combined with expertise in R&D and manufacturing sensors in the flexible sensor field”, added Liu.
