Festo Introduces a Unique Valve Manifold with Integrated Safety and EtherNet/IP Connectivity

The Festo VTSA-CB-F valve terminal achieves safe applications with minimal effort for plug-and-play functionality with the Rockwell Automation ecosystem.

Festo introduces to Rockwell Automation customers at Automation Fair, November 16-20, a unique pneumatic valve manifold that enables up to Performance Level (PL)-d Category 3 safety through an integrated serial bus backplane for pneumatics. The “C-Bus” plug-and-play integration simplifies, speeds up, and lowers component costs when installing pneumatic safety circuits, which are specifically for safe exhausting and preventive start-up.

The new VTSA-F-CB (CB for C-Bus) valve manifold offers serial communication that enables up to three safety-shutdown-groups per manifold. The VTSA-F-CB is compatible with combinations of pilot air control valves, soft-start exhaust valves, proportional valves, and vacuum generators.

“The VTSA-F valve manifold platform, a long-standing product in automotive applications, now offers with its C-Bus variant the ability to control downstream valves and devices via an integrated C-Bus backplane,” said Frank Latino, Festo Product Manager. “The VTSA-F-CB can dramatically reduce the number of components and time required to set up a range of safety circuits. The solution provides Rockwell OEMs and end users the ability to control valves with safe switched power zones and to monitor integrated sensors for safety feedback via Ethernet/IP.”

Visitors to the Festo virtual booth at Automation Fair will find an informational on-demand video of the VTSA-F-CB, a PowerPoint providing in-depth technical information, and the ability to chat with Festo personnel.

World’s first 65-inch PEDOT polymer touch sensor developed by Heraeus and SigmaSense to be shown at C-Touch & Display 2020

SigmaSense touch controller enables large 65 inch PEDOT sensor – A world’s first at this size.

“Large, flexible, PEDOT touch sensors will provide a new generation of user experiences at price points that enable broad adoption,” said Steve Sedaker, SigmaSense’s CMO

Heraeus, the world leader in polymer material innovations, and SigmaSense, the global leader in touch sensing performance, have jointly developed a breakthrough fully functional 65-inch PEDOT polymer touch sensor. This game-changing development – a world first – is poised to disrupt the touch sensor market providing superior optical clarity, reliable flexibility, reduced costs and SigmaDrive performance and functional advantages. This paves the way for affordable interactive displays of all sizes – even over 100 inches.

The solution is based on Clevios, a flexible and robust conductive PEDOT polymer, and enabled by SigmaDrive, SigmaSense’s current-mode sensing technology which supports super high resistance sensors at ultra-low voltages.

The new sensor technology powered by a SigmaSense controller will be publicly demonstrated for the first time at the trade fair C-Touch & Display in Shenzhen, China from November 19 – 21, 2020.

Heraeus Clevios Technology

Clevios PEDOT/PSS, the class leader in the field of conductive polymer chemistry, was formulated and coated via roll-to-roll process by Elite Optoelectronic Co., Ltd. (EOC). The sensor was then structured by laser patterning, processed, and assembled by Shenzhen Touchworks Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. (TWS). TWS laminated the sensor onto a flat panel display incorporating SigmaSense’s disruptive SigmaDrive™ touch controller.

Clevios PEDOT:PSS coatings do not add haze to the films, even under off-angle viewing, and thus provide superior optical clarity to the touch sensor regardless of the viewing angle or lighting conditions. Ultra-low light reflection is another advantage of Clevios that benefits the touch sensor optics due to its low refractive index, which matches with the refractive indices of the plastic or glass substrates. This intrinsic optical property facilitates invisible patterning by laser.

PEDOT:PSS has mechanical flexibility that is ideal for a range of narrow bezel and flexible computing applications. Flexibility eliminates costly crack-yield losses due to bending or flexing the films. A sufficiently thin sensor can be wrapped around the edges of the display to hide the bezel electrodes for narrow bezel designs – a feat that is risky today.

“SigmaSense delivers an unparalleled new sensing technology that can drive our higher resistance conductive polymers in touch sensors at sizes over 65 inches,” said Dr. Armin Sautter, Head of Technical Service Display at Heraeus GmbH. “The SigmaSense touch controller unleashes our optically superior sensor technology for use in markets that were not possible in the past.”

SigmaSense touch controller technology

SigmaSense has developed a new, innovative current mode analog to digital converter (ADC) technology. When this technology is applied to touch sensing, a hundred to over a thousand times better signal-to-noise is achieved compared to existing solutions. Large high resistance conductive polymer sensors are now possible for the industry. In addition, the entire display surface is sensed concurrently providing high speed human interface reports and high-fidelity information of all objects touching or in near proximity to the sensor surface. High speed, high-fidelity data necessary for machine learning object categorization bring a new generation of user experiences. High performance with low latency enables action-intensive gaming applications and gaming controllers to achieve new levels of capability.

“Large, flexible, PEDOT touch sensors will provide a new generation of user experiences at price points that enable broad adoption,” said Steve Sedaker, SigmaSense’s CMO. “Our SigmaDrive™ technology touch controllers are the world’s only controller that can drive these high resistance sensors at these large sizes.”

Yamaha EZ-300 Lights the Way to the Joy of Learning Music

News Image

“Between the light-up keyboard, built-in pop songs, and Keys to Success lesson mode, even extreme beginners can get to playing some really cool music very quickly,” says Ben Harrison, marketing manager, Digital Pianos and Portable Keyboards, Yamaha Corporation of America.

Today Yamaha announced the most fun, interactive, and affordable instrument of its kind for learning music: the EZ-300 personal electronic keyboard. With 61 light-up keys, an expandable playlist of built-in popular songs, and the unique Keys to Success lesson mode, there has never been a better way to make performing music “EZ!”

Thanks to the light-up keyboard, even someone who has never touched a musical instrument before can play along with a song within seconds of turning the EZ-300 on, just by following the lights. The keys are also touch-sensitive, meaning that playing them with more force makes the notes louder, just like on an acoustic piano.

The innovative Keys to Success feature is like having an expert (and patient) music tutor on call. It divides up songs into shorter phrases called Steps. Players can practice each Step repeatedly — with the aid of the light-up keys — until they master it, then move on to the next one. Of course, tempo may be slowed down to make learning easier still.

Although the EZ-300 comes right out of the box with 140 songs built in, users can expand its song library via simple drag-and-drop of MIDI song files (downloaded from the Yamaha online shop) from their Mac or PC directly via a USB connection. No additional apps are required.

Yamaha keyboards are famous for their ultra-realistic instrument Voices, from pianos to organs to strings, brass, percussion, guitars, synthesizers, and more. In the EZ-300, exclusive SuperArticulation Light Voices add gestures used by experienced players — such as guitar string harmonics or pizzicato plucks on a violin — to enhance authenticity even more. The diverse Accompaniment Styles, which put a virtual backing band at the user’s fingertips, are complemented by the Smart Chord function. This allows playing of one-finger chords perfectly matched to the chosen Style and musical key.

“Add touch-sensitive keys, drag-and-drop song support, a huge variety of accompaniment Styles and instrument Voices, and other exciting features, and the EZ-300 becomes a great choice for anyone learning to play as well as for more creative musical adventures.”

With the Yamaha EZ-300, learning and performing becomes so “EZ” that it’s clear there is no such thing as a non-musician. There are only musicians who don’t yet realize they are.

Pricing and Availability

The Yamaha EZ-300 is shipping to retailers by late November/early December at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $399.99. For more information, visit Yamaha.io/EZ300

Omron Automation Americas, a global leader in end-to-end automation solutions for manufacturing and other industries, recently launched its V275 Series printer-integrated label inspection and barcode verification system to help manufacturers in life science, food and beverage, automotive and consumer packaged goods industries more efficiently monitor their product and packaging labels. These industries have a strong traceability need to ensure that labels show the right content, are clearly legible, and contain barcodes that meet mandated quality standards.

The V275 is able to grade 1D and 2D barcodes at normal printing speeds to ISO 15415, ISO 15416, and GS1 standards while also inspecting human-readable content for accuracy and print quality using optical character recognition (OCR), optical character verification (OCV) and blemish detection tools. Logic in the V275 software allows for automated inspection of barcode content to expected values and data formats for both the machine-readable and human-readable information on each label. In the event of a label quality error, the system automatically stops the printer and alerts the operator via an output to a light tower.

Since thermal desktop printers are most commonly used for label printing, Omron has built upon the strengths of its popular LVS-7510 printer-integrated label inspection system to offer the most tightly integrated and capable label inspection solution on the market. The V275 includes a high-resolution line scan camera and printer controls built into a Zebra ZT600 Series high-performance thermal printer. The web-based user interface runs on Ethernet-based communications from the V275 to the customer’s PC or server and offers label inspection template design, real-time label quality monitoring, template and inspection results data archiving.

Key features and benefits of the V275 include the following:

  • Forms a complete solution for the real-time inspection of thousands of labels per day
  • Supports compliance with GS1 requirements for barcode quality to ISO 15415/15416 standards and GS1 General Specifications certified to ISO 15426 verifier requirements
  • Uses Ethernet-based communication between the inspection system and the PC or server
  • Reduces the risk of incorrect and poor-quality labels entering the supply chain, negatively impacting product quality and forcing returns and/or recalls
  • Provides a highly visual, web-based UI for configuration, runtime label view, data archiving, user management, and audit trail (locally or remotely)
  • Supports continuous label printing, single label tear-off, and peel and present
  • Offers advanced label inspection design tools for grading labels to ISO standards as well as blemish detection for symbols, logos and other content
  • Provides an API for integration of inspection information into other software applications
