Author Wants to Reassure Readers That They’re “Not F*cking Crazy”

You’re Not F*cking Crazy by Kendra Bergman

A lifelong student of spirituality, author Kendra Bergman wants to help open people’s eyes to their intuition. In her new book, “You’re Not F*cking Crazy,” she breaks down the signs or experiences that readers may find in their lives that they don’t fully understand.

“Numerous individuals have encounters that remain mysterious yet harmless, adding no disruption to their lives,” Bergman said. “An increasing number of people are finding the courage to speak openly about their experiences. Don’t overanalyze it. Step out of your own way. Conduct thorough research. Know that you are not alone.”

Much like the title of her book states, Bergman wants to offer readers reassurance that they’re not crazy. Instead, she wants readers to recognize these experiences as a spiritual event. She shares her own spiritual experiences to help readers feel more at ease with sharing their own.

“My generation was told ‘be careful what you say, or they’ll put you in the funny farm,’” Bergman said. “Obviously that wasn’t accurate, and now that the human brain and behavior have been studied further, we understand that not everything people experience that isn’t understood by our Egoic Mind is mental illness.”

“You’re Not F*cking Crazy” also includes guided questions and mindfulness exercises to help readers grow in their spiritual practice and understand their experiences. She wants readers to be able to release the fear of judgement and accept that their experiences are valid.

“There are so many people who have experiences to share,” Bergman said. “It is vital that we accept them and their experiences and continue to share love, joy and peace with others.”

BioFactura

Jeffrey N Hausfeld, MD, MBA., Chairman and Chief Medical Officer of BioFactura, stated, “We are proud to partner with CuraTeQ to bring BioFactura’s high quality biosimilar of Ustekinumab to the global marketplace in order to fulfill these goals.”

BioFactura, Inc. today announced that CuraTeQ Biologics Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Aurobindo Pharma Limited, has entered into an exclusive license to commercialize BFI-751, BioFactura’s proposed biosimilar to Stelara (Ustekinumab). Ustekinumab is a recombinant monoclonal antibody that works by blocking both interleukins IL-12 and IL-23 and is used for treating Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. The global drug sales of Ustekinumab stood at close to 10 billion in 2022 presenting a significant opportunity with a good number of indications and a wider use.

Under the terms of the agreement, CuraTeQ has been granted exclusive license rights to commercialize BFI-751 in all major regulated markets including US, EU, UK, Canada, ANZ and certain other semi-regulated and emerging markets worldwide. Additionally, CuraTeQ will have the global manufacturing rights for this product, which will be produced at CuraTeQ facilities in Hyderabad, India. BioFactura plans to begin a global Phase 3 trial of the product as the next logical milestone in development. CuraTeQ intends to file this product in India and Emerging Markets as early as in 2024 and the regulated markets filing is expected to begin in 2026. BioFactura will receive license fees not exceeding $33.5 million spread across different milestones leading to commercialization and will obtain up to 43% profit sharing depending on the territory.

Commenting on the deal with BioFactura, Dr. Satakarni Makkapati, CEO – Biologics, Vaccines and Peptides, Aurobindo Pharma said, “BioFactura has demonstrated bio-equivalence of BFI-751 vs US and EU registered originator product Stelara in a three-arm Phase 1 study conducted in 200 plus healthy subjects. We are excited by the prospect of this Ustekinumab biosimilar advancing to Phase 3 clinical studies in the due course of time. Ustekinumab fits into our expanding immunology products portfolio very well and we will use our presence across key markets to commercialize this product.”

Commenting on the deal with BioFactura, Mr. Nithyananda Reddy, MD and Vice Chairman, Aurobindo Pharma said, “This agreement underscores our investment intentions in biosimilars business. It is our commitment to improve lives of patients suffering from these debilitating immune and inflammatory diseases by delivering them access to cost-effective and high quality biosimilars such as Ustekinumab.”

With CuraTeQ, we have found the optimal partner to successfully complete the journey and bring this important product to market.”

Additionally, Jeffrey N Hausfeld, MD, MBA., Chairman and Chief Medical Officer of BioFactura, stated, “The purpose and regulatory framework of bringing biosimilars into the mainstream of healthcare systems worldwide should be focused on improving outcomes, quality of life, accessibility, and enhancing the patient experience, with medicines proven to be as potent, pure, safe, and effective as the branded drugs. We are proud to partner with CuraTeQ to bring BioFactura’s high quality biosimilar of Ustekinumab to the global marketplace in order to fulfill these goals.”

Memorial Regional Hospital Celebrates 70th Anniversary with $88M Investment in Patient-Focused Infrastructure

Construction has begun at Memorial Regional Hospital

“With a visionary approach, Memorial Regional Hospital aims to enhance the quality of care and ensure the best possible experience for our patients and their families,” said Peter Powers, CEO, Memorial Regional Hospital.

Prioritizing patient care and further elevating the health services it provides, Memorial Regional Hospital, the flagship facility of Memorial Healthcare System, is investing $88 million to upgrade its infrastructure. Construction has begun at the Hollywood-based hospital and will include an all-new floor for its Memorial Family Birthplace, and significant upgrades to the Level I Trauma Center and Emergency Room.

Since its opening as a one-story, 100-bed Memorial Hospital in 1953, to one of the largest hospitals in the state with 863 beds and dozens of specialties, the hospital has continuously expanded its services and spaces to meet the demands of a growing community. This investment affirms Memorial’s commitment to remaining a leader in healthcare, continually adapting and evolving to optimize positive outcomes and the patient experience.

“With a visionary approach, Memorial Regional Hospital aims to enhance the quality of care and ensure the best possible experience for our patients and their families,” said Peter Powers, CEO, Memorial Regional Hospital. “This investment reflects the hospital’s commitment to remaining at the forefront of medical advancements and reflects our unwavering dedication the community we serve.”

Expanding the Family Birthplace

With more babies born at Memorial Regional Hospital than any other facility in Broward County, more than 75% of the investment ($68 million) has been allocated to redesigning the Family Birthplace to create a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to delivering exceptional maternity care.

This labor of love is underway with expected completion in late 2024. Already a destination center for high-risk pregnancies, with specialized programs for high-risk obstetrics, maternal-fetal medicine, a Placenta Accreta Spectrum Program, and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s Level IV Wasie NICU, the enhanced Family Birthplace will offer expanded, private new rooms and specialty rooms, family lounge, cutting-edge technology, and a comprehensive range of services to support expecting mothers and newborns.

The redesigned fourth floor (59,150 sq. ft.) will include:

  • All private rooms
  • 54 Postpartum rooms, 18 Antepartum rooms
  • Partner & Family lounge
  • Specialty rooms for meditation and Kosher dietary needs
  • Classroom for new parent classes
  • Simulation lab to offer specialized training to promote quality and safety

“We want to give expectant parents a modern and safe place to deliver with all the comforts to call this their baby’s first home. The legacy and commitment of Memorial Regional Hospital remains evident as we continue to make significant upgrades to our all-new fourth floor,” shared Jane McCarthy, Director of Nursing.

Revamping the Level 1 Trauma Center and Emergency Room

Not stopping there, Memorial Regional Hospital is committed to being at the forefront of emergency medical services in South Florida, and is investing $20 million to upgrade its Level 1 Trauma Center and Emergency Room. By upgrading and expanding the trauma center, which treats pediatric and adult patients who are critically wounded or suffer a traumatic injury, the hospital is enhancing its capacity to handle the most critical cases and mass casualty situations efficiently and effectively.

With nearly 94,000 visits in 2022, the hospital’s ER is the second largest in the state. Due to the high volume of patients in this area, construction is happening in numerous phases and is expected to be completed in early 2025.

The improvements include:

  • Three redesigned trauma bays with built-in redundancy to accommodate two patients per room if necessary
  • Enlarged resuscitation room that could serve as a fourth trauma bay if needed
  • Emergency room aesthetic upgrades
  • Reconfigured and more functional triage workflow space

In addition to the Family Birthplace, Level I Trauma Center, and Emergency Room, Memorial features a wide range of treatments and technologies, including: Medical and Surgical Services, Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute with an award-winning ECMO program, Memorial Cancer Institute, Memorial Neuroscience Institute, and Comprehensive Stroke Center, Memorial Transplant Institute, offering kidney, heart and pancreas transplants and Behavioral Health Services.

The History of Memorial Regional Hospital

For 70 years, the South Florida community has benefited from caring and compassionate healthcare at Memorial Regional Hospital. Today, as the flagship facility of Memorial Healthcare System, the 863-bed hospital, one of the largest in Florida, is making significant investments to ensure it continues to offer high quality service in modern, comfortable spaces.

The Golden Tool for Container Closure Integrity Testing, Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

Xtalks Life Science Webinars

This is particularly relevant for certain sterile pharmaceutical products, including mRNA and live vaccines, gene therapies and products with active cells.

A pioneering webinar focusing on container closure integrity (CCI) in pharmaceutical products is set to take place. This highly informative session will delve into the critical role of headspace gas ingress methods in maintaining product stability and safety.

The webinar is titled “Headspace Gas Ingress Methods: The Golden Tool for Container Closure Integrity Testing” and will be presented by Dr. Derek Duncan, PhD, Director at Lighthouse Instruments. Dr. Duncan’s extensive experience in the field includes applications for process monitoring and finished product inspection, notably using headspace analysis for 100 percent container closure integrity testing.

Over the years, the context of container closure integrity has broadened. It is not only linked to maintaining sterility but also to preserving critical headspace gas conditions. This is particularly relevant for certain sterile pharmaceutical products, including mRNA and live vaccines, gene therapies and products with active cells. These require ultracold storage or cryogenic temperatures to maintain stability and/or activity. Studies have indicated that ultracold storage temperatures can pose risks to traditional pharmaceutical primary packaging systems, specifically the CCI of vial-rubber stopper combinations and pre-filled syringe systems traditionally used to fill sterile pharmaceutical products.

The webinar will explore traditional container closure integrity testing (CCIT) methods and the emerging use of laser-based headspace analysis, a deterministic method that is being regularly implemented as the ‘golden tool’ for generating robust science-based CCIT data for all types of sterile pharmaceutical products.

LIGHTHOUSE, a leading innovator in process monitoring and finished product inspection, is known for its cutting-edge applications including headspace analysis for container closure integrity testing. The company has joined forces with Xtalks to present this insightful webinar, sharing its expertise with the wider industry.

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, July 25, 2023, and tune in at 10am EDT (4pm CEST/EU-Central) for this free webinar on container closure integrity testing methods.

From Gender Dysphoria to Gender Euphoria Using Minimally Invasive Facial Transformation

Non-surgical aesthetic treatments

The growing appeal and destigmatization of aesthetic medical treatments across all genders creates unique opportunities for clinicians to do their part in supporting transgender individuals on their lifelong journey of self-discovery and self-expression

From LGB to LGBTQIA+, there was an evolution within the Pride Revolution. The well-known acronym, whose letters represent self-affirming pride, equality, and inclusivity, has had its own journey of discovery toward its broader identity. For the lesbian and gay community in the 1960s and ’70s, the addition of the “B” for bisexual was considered controversial, as the bisexual movement was seen as a “half-step out of the closet” and only a stone’s throw away from heterosexuality. The “T” representing transsexuality was perceived as even farther afield from the formative goals of the gay and lesbian alliance.(1) However, in the fullness of time, the LGBTQIA+ movement has come to represent acceptance, freedom, and self-expression. The University of San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Resource Center describes the 21st-century PRIDE values as evoking — Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Diversity, and Excellence — building a collaborative culture unified in its shared values and beliefs that helps to set expectations and drive decision-making that inspires action.(2) Cynthia Elliott, MD, owner and primary practitioner of Skinspirations, notes, “The growing appeal and destigmatization of aesthetic medical treatments across all genders creates unique opportunities for clinicians to do their part in supporting transgender individuals on their lifelong journey of self-discovery and self-expression.”

Recent data from a Pew Research Center survey indicates a remarkable shift in the percentage of transgender individuals in the United States across generations. Among adults under 30, 5.1% identify as trans or nonbinary, with 2.0% identifying as trans men or trans women and 3.0% considering themselves nonbinary (neither strictly a man nor a woman). The percentage drops to 1.6% for adults aged 30 to 49 and further down to 0.3% for those over 50.(3)

Individuals of all genders are learning that there are non-surgical aesthetic treatments to help them look as feminine, masculine, or androgynous as they prefer. While some individuals identify with traditional binary gender roles, others prefer to express themselves somewhere on the spectrum between feminine and masculine.(4)

At Skinspirations, increasingly popular gender-aligning facial aesthetic treatments include enhancing masculine features by crafting strong chins and chiseled jawlines with horizontal brows or feminizing faces by permanently erasing facial hair and creating higher cheekbones, fuller lips, and tapered chins. These transformations are possible using injectable treatments, laser hair removal, and non-surgical body contouring.

Dr. Elliott encourages her patients to communicate their goals candidly, adding, “I had a new patient who presented to me as a man; when I asked him what he’d like to change, he answered, ‘I want cheeks like yours.’ When I told him he would look very feminine if I gave him cheeks like mine, he answered, ‘Exactly.’ We both knew at that moment what his appearance goals were. Over the following months, we elevated his brows, tapered his chin with filler, and narrowed his jawline with Botox; one of my aestheticians even lent him a skirt. It was a gratifying project for all of us.”

About Dr. Cynthia Elliott and Skinspirations

Cynthia Elliott, M.D., is the owner and primary practitioner of Skinspirations, a cosmetic and regenerative medical practice that provides injectable and laser aesthetic treatments, professional skincare, body contouring, and regenerative treatments for aesthetic and musculoskeletal concerns. Located in Clearwater, Florida, Dr. Elliott is valued for her medical expertise and her training on the national level for the makers of Botox® Cosmetic and Juvéderm and internationally for Cutera Lasers. Her patients seek her expertise, knowing that she and her long-tenured staff have trained many professionals in the Tampa Bay area.
