Allegheny Health Network, Israel Innovation Authority Announce Plans for Technology Start-Up Collaboration

“Health care is local, but health care research is global — and international partnerships are an important part of our targeted research strategy at AHN and Highmark Health,” said Keith Lejeune, AHN’s Senior Vice President for Research and Innovation.

Allegheny Health Network (AHN) and the Israel Innovation Authority announced today that they have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a formal affiliation between AHN’s Research Institute and the Innovation Authority to support Israeli health-care startups, and provide them with access to AHN facilities for pilot projects, advanced technology support, and other forms of program assistance.

When launched, the organizations will collaborate on an array of technologies and business development opportunities that have the potential to bring some of Israel’s most promising health technology startups to Pittsburgh, giving the companies — and the entrepreneurs behind them — a local research partner and a foothold for American operations.

“We’re excited to partner with the Israel Innovation Authority to help cultivate some of their country’s brightest health care startups, and we’re thrilled to work with their entrepreneurs as they refine, test and scale innovative new technologies that may one day benefit patients and medical providers here in Pittsburgh, and around the world,” said Tariq J. Cheema, MD, medical director of the AHN Research Institute. AHN, based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a 14-hospital health care organization and part of Highmark Health.

After the collaboration is finalized later this year, applications to the program will be opened in Israel, with the Innovation Authority and the AHN Research Institute jointly selecting, screening and approving finalists. The selected companies will then receive up to 50% funding from the Israel Innovation Authority for conducting joint research and development projects or pilots together with AHN.

The AHN Research Institute may also choose to supply its own seed funding, in addition to non-monetary support such as access to AHN facilities, consulting services, research assistance, information technology assistance, and clinical and administrative staff across a variety of clinical settings, for the purposes of piloting new technologies or even new drug therapies.

“The ability to develop a drug suitable for a particular population, to ensure its safety, and to prove its efficacy with precision, is paving the way for faster, smarter, and cost-effective medical care,” said Dr. Amiram Appelbaum, Chairman of the Israel Innovation Authority and Chief Innovation Scientist at the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology. “We are delighted to collaborate with an outstanding partner such as AHN, which has a rich legacy of advancing pioneering scientific research and groundbreaking clinical innovations that have improved the health and well-being of so many people over the decades.”

This collaboration will be part of the Innovation Authority’s larger International Health Centers R&D and Piloting program, which established similar partnerships with the Mayo Clinic, Hartford HealthCare and Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in the U.S., as well as hospitals in the United Kingdom and Germany.

This new collaboration “will enable the Israeli medical innovation ecosystem to access top-tier facilities, know-how, infrastructure and expertise on a global scale, and provide Israeli companies with a new launchpad for their technologies and services,” Dr. Appelbaum said.

AHN, meanwhile, continues to expand its portfolio of partnerships with international collaborators. In recent months, AHN has formalized agreements with Splendo Health (Netherlands) and AdipoPharma (France) to share office space, lab space and professional resources at AHN Suburban, a former acute-care hospital in Bellevue, Pa., that is now being used as a health care innovation center.

AHN Suburban is also home to AlphaLab Health, a life-sciences incubator that was developed in partnership with Pittsburgh-based technology investor Innovation Works.

The AlphaLab Health incubator draws applicants from around the world to compete for pre-seed investment funding and participate in a mentorship program that helps them to navigate the key risk points in the clinical and commercial development of their early-stage companies.

AHN’s partnership with the Innovation Authority is the latest in a series of collaborations between Pittsburgh-based innovators and their Israeli counterparts. For example, the group known as “412×972” — signifying the area code for Pittsburgh and the international calling code for Israel — has nurtured business connections between the two regions, and has helped dozens of Israeli and Pittsburgh companies partner on innovative projects since 2020.

AHN has been a participant in the 412×972 initiative from the beginning.

AHN Suburban is also home to Testa Seat, a company that builds adaptive seating for children and adults with special needs. Founded in Israel by Alex Geht, Testa Seat is part of AHN Suburban’s disability technology incubator program, and arrived in Pittsburgh through an Israeli initiative known as TOM — Tikkun Olam Makers.

TOM, a global nonprofit founded by Israeli entrepreneur Gidi Grinstein, sponsors companies that create affordable technologies and products for people living with disabilities, as well as the elderly and the poor. (Tikkun olam is the core Jewish concept of “repairing the world” through purposeful service and action.)

Validation of a Novel Head-Mounted Perimeter versus the Humphrey Field Analyzer

We are excited about the potential applications for this device and look forward to the M&S VR headset helping patients who otherwise could not or would not receive needed testing.

Researchers at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences recently completed a pilot study showing that a virtual reality headset can be used to reliably diagnose and monitor visual field loss in glaucoma patients. This study paves the way for wider adoption of such headsets, which will not only make testing quicker and more comfortable, but also more accessible for patients with mobility issues. This in turn would mean better screening and early detection of glaucoma in vulnerable parts of the population.

The study was conducted by two University of Iowa researchers who compared performance of a Smart System Virtual Reality Perimeter (SSVR) from M&S Technologies with a more traditional testing device, the Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA). The HFA is a large device that does not allow for examination outside the clinic, and which “can be uncomfortable for patients with limited mobility or large body habitus.” Contrastingly, the SSVR is a head-mounted device that many users are already familiar with through other contexts, such as gaming.

The study looked at a population of adult patients diagnosed with glaucoma or suspected of having early glaucoma. Each patient completed visual field tests with both devices in a random order. Test results indicate that the SSVR was just as reliable as the HFA for testing purposes, especially as glaucoma severity increases. Test duration was also shorter in all cases, and the majority of participants tested said that they preferred the SSVR over the HFA when it came to the visual field testing experience.

“We were thrilled to learn not only that the headset performed well, but that patients preferred it,” says Mike Umali, National Sales Manager for M&S Technologies, makers of the Smart System and SSVR. “Whenever you can make testing more comfortable for patients while maintaining accuracy, it’s a win for everyone—doctors, patients, and device makers.”

The M&S SSVR is commercially available for use in visual field testing as well as numerous functional tests. M&S continues to evaluate new tests to determine which vision tests can be accurately adapted to the virtual reality headset platform.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, with an estimated 6 million people worldwide blind due to the disease and another 13 million suffering from moderate to severe visual impairment. Many of the same studies that derive these estimates also show that glaucoma can be avoided with early detection and timely intervention.

Doctor’s Say Most People Who Think They Are Allergic to Penicillin Are Likely Not

Allergist says that most who think they are allergic to penicillin are likely not and are limiting their access to medications.

“We now know that if someone has not been exposed to penicillin in over five years, there is about an 80% chance that the allergy is out of their system,” says Luis Saca, MD.

Many people think they’re allergic to penicillin, but experts say most of the population is not allergic at all. Allergist and immunologist Luis Saca, MD, implemented a new program at Loma Linda University Health to test for patients’ penicillin allergy and hopefully decrease the unnecessary use of broad-spectrum antibiotics.

According to the CDC, approximately 10% of U.S. patients report having a penicillin allergy. Realistically, however, fewer than 1% of the population is truly allergic to penicillin, as noted in the same CDC report. This allergy limits an individual’s access to many beneficial medications that are penicillin derivatives. Penicillin allergy patients must take broad-spectrum antibiotics that can increase healthcare costs and antibiotic resistance.

Saca says reactions to the drug in childhood cause many individuals to think they are allergic through adulthood. “The allergic reaction is not for life,” he says. “We now know that if someone has not been exposed to penicillin in over five years, there is about an 80% chance that the allergy is out of their system.”

Many patients also experience side effects and label it an allergy. Nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain are just a few common side effects — not allergic reactions. Someone experiencing a true allergic reaction to penicillin may have a cough, shortness of breath, itchiness, or a rash. These are indicators of a type-1 hypersensitivity reaction in someone whose immune system developed an IgE antibody against a soluble antigen (eg., penicillin).

Saca says referrals to allergy and immunology will receive a progressive three-step test in one doctor’s visit.

1. Skin prick test. A positive reaction indicating an allergy will cause a red, itchy, raised bump. Patients with no reaction move to the next step.

2. Intradermal test. The faculty will then inject a small amount of solution under the skin of the forearm to create a small bump. Growth indicates a positive reaction. The patient will move to the final test if no growth is observed.

3. Oral test. Patients will receive amoxicillin in the office and are closely monitored by faculty for 45 to 60 minutes. Saca says if the first two tests are negative, the oral test is likely also negative.

Receiving negative results for all tests allows Saca to remove the penicillin allergy from the patient’s chart and restore their healthcare options.

Practitioners report that greater integration of lifestyle medicine into their medical practice helps manage and reduce burnout

The results of this research are highly encouraging because clinician burnout is a growing problem that can not only impact the clinician’s sense of wellbeing but also the safety and quality of care that patients receive

A research study just published in the American Journal of Health Promotion found that the more that lifestyle medicine clinicians were able to incorporate lifestyle medicine into their medical practices, the less likely they were to experience burnout.

Practicing more lifestyle medicine was associated with a 43% decrease in the chances of experiencing burnout in this 2019 cross-sectional survey of 482 members of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM).

Additionally, 90% of respondents reported that lifestyle medicine positively impacted their professional satisfaction. Of these, 44% attributed that positive impact to feelings of accomplishment and meaningfulness, 26% to increased patient satisfaction due to improved outcomes, and 22% to enjoyment of teaching and coaching leading to more personal clinician-patient relationships.

Burnout among health professionals is an urgent national problem, with an estimated 63% percent of health care professionals experiencing it in 2022, up from 44% in 2017. Some are leaving the already short-staffed medical profession because of it. The Association of American Medical Colleges projects a physician shortage of between 37,800 and 124,000 by 2034.

Lifestyle medicine is a medical specialty that uses therapeutic lifestyle interventions as a primary modality to treat chronic conditions including, but not limited to, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Lifestyle medicine certified clinicians are trained to apply evidence-based, whole-person, prescriptive lifestyle change to treat and, when used intensively, often reverse such conditions. Applying the six pillars of lifestyle medicine—a whole-food, plant-predominant eating pattern, physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connections—also provides effective prevention for these conditions.

Almost two-thirds of survey respondents were allopathic (MD) or osteopathic physicians (DO). Other respondents included registered nurses, registered dietitians, physical therapists, occupational therapists and doctors of nursing practice. Importantly, 28% of respondents reported no longer experiencing burn out. Of those, 84% attributed it to changing their work situation. Among those, 43% said the opportunity to better incorporate lifestyle medicine into their practice motivated their job change.

One respondent wrote that lifestyle medicine “is aligned with my purpose, so provides satisfaction. I get time with patients and can address emotional/spiritual issues in addition to physical complaints, thus addressing the whole person.” Another respondent wrote that “Lifestyle medicine practice has brought joy and meaning to my professional work” while another reported gratitude in “being able to offer a way to avoid or reverse chronic disease rather than simply moving chairs around on the deck of the Titanic.”

Improved self-care, such as incorporating lifestyle behavior changes into their own lives, was also a top reason reported for reduced experiences of burnout. One respondent wrote “I also implemented my own lifestyle medicine changes – increased physical activity, switched to plant-based diet, managed stress better.”

ACLM offers a Physician and Healthcare Professional Well-Being course to support health professionals in achieving and sustaining healthy lifestyles. The course includes exercises to harness personal strengths and leadership skills for improving workplace culture and to engage in effective, positive patient interactions.

The study notes that attempts to reduce clinician burnout have traditionally focused on organizational changes related to staffing, paperwork or reduced rotations, but have produced only modest results. This is the first study to explore the experiences of burnout and, most importantly, reductions in burnout among lifestyle medicine clinicians. Future research should examine and compare the experiences of burnout among lifestyle medicine clinicians and similar groups of non-lifestyle medicine clinicians, the study stated.

Lifestyle medicine has also been identified as a potential strategy to inspire student doctors to choose a primary care specialty through an increased focus on nutrition, physical activity and other lifestyle modifications in medical education. The shortage of primary care physicians alone is projected to grow to between 17,800 and 48,000 by 2034.

“The results of this research are highly encouraging because clinician burnout is a growing problem that can not only impact the clinician’s sense of wellbeing but also the safety and quality of care that patients receive,” said ACLM President Beth Frates, MD, FACLM, DipABLM, clinical assistant professor at Harvard Medical School. “It appears that a primary driver of burnout is a profound lack of satisfaction and joy in the lives of clinicians who are asked to manage patients with increasing numbers of chronic conditions through ever-increasing quantities of medications and procedures. Lifestyle medicine allows clinicians to connect on a deeper level with patients and address the root causes of disease to help them truly heal. And the opportunity to be true healers is why many clinicians choose to study medicine in the first place.”
