LiveWall Living Wall Brings Natural Beauty and Calm to the TSA Checkpoint at Appleton International Airport (ATW)

The living wall softens and brightens the area following the airport’s TSA checkpoint.

Not only does it provide a calming effect, it quickly became an unexpected attraction.

The renovation and expansion of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint at Appleton International Airport (ATW), Appleton, Wisc., features a 276-square-foot green wall installed with the LiveWall ® Indoor Living Wall System. Completed in August 2018, the three-sided living wall is positioned at the end of the security lines, where it serves as green design element that has a natural, biophilic calming effect.

“We set out to make ATW’s TSA checkpoint the most visually appealing and pleasant in the U.S.,” said Patrick Tracey, marketing manager, Appleton International Airport (ATW). “The living wall is essential in realizing this goal.”

“The living wall serves to calm and de-stress the checkpoint,” said Mitchell Walker, designer, aviation architecture, Mead & Hunt.

The transformation of the security area is part of a multi-million renovation and reconstruction of 50,000 square feet of ATW’s commercial passenger terminal designed by Mead & Hunt. The project included opening up and maximizing the space in the security area and establishing dedicated lanes for entering the security lines from the terminal and exiting to the terminal from the gates. Adding glazing, both at the exterior and for interior partitions, brightens up the area with borrowed light.

The living wall is situated at the end of the security lines in the “composure area” (where passengers can sit, put their shoes back on, and gather their belongings). Installed by SMA Construction Services (Green Bay, Wisc.), and maintained by Beauty By The Yard (Neenah, Wisc.), the green wall at ATW covers three sides of a structural wall. The section facing the TSA checkpoint is 10’-8” x 8’-3 3/8.” The wrapped corner section is 6’-8” x 10’-11 3/8.” The section facing toward the gates is 10’-8” x 10’-11 3/8”. In total, the wall includes 148 LiveWall modular planter boxes, which are high-impact, UV-resistant, architectural quality moldings. They contain re-usable inserts that hold the growing medium and contain a mix of five different indoor plants.

“The LiveWall green wall softens the feeling of the terminal, where many other materials for the flooring and walls are hard,” said Scott Volberding, C.M., ACE, operations and maintenance manager, Appleton International Airport (ATW). “Not only does it provide a calming effect, it quickly became an unexpected attraction.”

“Travelers are delighted with the wall,” said Tracey. “We see passengers taking selfies in front of the wall after they go through security. Their positive experience of the living wall makes for a memory they want to save and share on social media.”

2020 Water Ski & Wake Sports Hall of Fame Inductees Announced

“We are proud to honor the legacies of these amazing athletes, who inspired our nation both on and off the water,” said USA-WWF Executive Director Tracy Mattes. “Their accomplishments and shining examples will live on to inspire future generations.”

Wakeboard athlete Shaun Murray, water ski athlete Mandy Nightingale and adaptive water ski athlete Joe Ray will be formally enshrined at the 38th Annual USA Water Ski & Wake Sports Foundation Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday, May 2 at Walt Disney’s newly designed Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Fla.

“We are proud to honor the legacies of these amazing athletes, who inspired our nation both on and off the water,” said USA-WWF Executive Director Tracy Mattes. “Their accomplishments and shining examples will live on to inspire future generations.”

USA-WWF has partnered with Walt Disney World to create the Oscars of water skiing & wake sports. From the red-carpet arrivals to the lavish induction ceremony, it will certainly be a night filled with inspiration & magic as we celebrate the sports highest honor.

Shaun Murray

Murray was a four-time world champion wakeboarder. He was born on April 28, 1976 in Mission Viejo, Calif., and started water skiing at the age of 8. In 1988, he moved with his family to Lake St. Louis, Mo., where he honed his skills as a member of the Lake St. Louis Water Ski Club. After graduating from high school, he moved to Florida to compete for the Florida Southern College water ski team and teach water skiing at the Benzel Ski School. His wakeboarding career started in 1995 and was full of innovation and accomplishment, including many pro tour and world championship titles. Murray invented several wakeboard tricks, including the Bel Air, Tweety Bird, Square Raley, Crook, Crow 5, Heelside frontside and more. He promoted his own “Backyard Tour” with pro rider and friend Gerry Nunn; has been featured in many wakeboard movies, magazine and television pieces; created his own wakeboard instructional series entitled “Detention;” and was the star of his own video game, Wakeboarding Unleashed. In the summer of 2004, Murray dislocated his knee while riding. He tore his ACL, PCL, and MCL. After reconstructive surgery he was told he might not ride again. But, just months later he was back riding. He helped develop signature products that include boats, wakeboards, life jackets, wet suits and clothing lines. Murray was the first wakeboarder to land a 900 (Regular Heelside) in a competition, and he is the only rider ever to hold World, Pro Tour and National Championship titles at once.

Mandy Nightingale

While considered a formidable three-event water ski athlete, Nightingale was one of the greatest trick skiers of her era, winning back-to-back world championships in 2003 and 2005, and establishing a world record of 8,740 points in 2006. She was a five-time champion of the U.S. Open and two-time champion of the Masters. She was named USA Water Ski & Wake Sports’ Female Athlete of the Year in 2007 when she competed on two U.S. water ski teams and collected four individual medals in the process. She also won women’s tricks title that year at the Australian Open and U.S. Open and swept both events of the IWWF Water Ski World Cup. At the 2007 Pan American Games, she earned the silver medal in tricks and bronze medals in slalom and jumping. At the 2007 Water Ski World Championships, she was the lone U.S. team member to win an individual medal, earning the bronze in tricks.

Joe Ray

Ray announced his retirement from competition at age 59 following the conclusion of the 2017 Disabled Water Ski World Championships. Competing in the MP2 Division from 1998-2016, Ray won 34 gold medals, seven silver medals and four bronze medals at the U.S. Disabled Water Ski National Championships. He was a 10-time national MP2 overall champion. As a nine-time member of the U.S. Disabled Water Ski Team, he won 13 gold medals, six silver medals and five bronze medals at the Disabled Water Ski World Championships. He was a three-time world MP2 overall champion and a member of five gold-medal winning U.S. Disabled Water Ski Teams. He set six MP2 world slalom records and he was the first MP2 water skier to run the outer course. At the only two Disabled Pan American Championships held, he won the overall gold medal both times in Seated Men. He was a six-time recipient of the Water Skiers with Disabilities Association’s Male Athlete of the Year award.

Nexus Names New Leadership to Drive Innovation in Mental Health Services


Nationally, there is a large gap in mental health care for families…Margaret’s extensive background makes her well-positioned to identify the needs of our communities and help creatively build service lines that can meet families where they live.

Nexus, a nonprofit organization providing mental health services to families, has hired Margaret Vimont as Vice President of Strategy and Service Development and Scott McGuire as Chief Financial Officer.

Margaret Vimont, LCSW, steps into the newly created position of Vice President of Strategy and Service Development, to focus on identification, growth and implementation of community-based programs to add to Nexus service offerings.

Dr. Michelle K. Comagine Health participates in study to reduce the risk of post-incarceration opioid overdose in women


“We know from experiences in other states, that women are at a significantly higher risk of opioid overdose compared to their male counterparts,” says Elizabeth Needham Waddell, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health.

More than 75 percent of incarcerated women in Oregon’s state prison system require treatment for a substance use disorder. Further, according to Elizabeth Needham Waddell, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health, opioid overdose is a leading cause of death following prison release.

“We know from experiences in other states, that women are at a significantly higher risk of opioid overdose compared to their male counterparts,” she says. “Especially in the first few weeks following their release.”

While sex-related differences specific to overdose risk in incarcerated adults are not yet fully understood, there are multiple individual and social factors to consider, Waddell explains. For example, compared with incarcerated men, women have higher rates of substance use disorders and co-occurring medical and mental health conditions. Limited access to treatment, supportive social networks and affordable housing also are related to overdose risk.

“When these factors aren’t considered, and effective links to treatment and recovery support services are not provided prior to release from prison, women are not set up for success in the community and are more likely to return to substance use,” Waddell says. “We need to offer an appropriate continuum of treatment and recovery support that starts before their release.”

Introducing ROAR

Waddell is collaborating with researchers in the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health, OHSU School of Medicine, the Oregon State University/OHSU College of Pharmacy and Comagine Health in conducting a three-year pilot study to evaluate a new opioid overdose prevention program called Reducing Overdose After Release from Incarceration, or ROAR.

Comagine Health is providing support to certified recovery mentors from CODA and Bridgeway Recovery Services and leading data collection efforts, which include baseline surveys collected prior to release from Coffee Creek Correctional Facility, follow-up surveys collected three and six months after release, and qualitative interviews collected three months after release.

Launched in June 2019 in collaboration with the Oregon Department of Corrections, ROAR is specifically designed to meet the unique needs of incarcerated women diagnosed with moderate to severe opioid use disorder. The program, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has already recruited more than 20 participants.

Certified recovery mentor Morgan Nelson works with a number of them. Nelson, formerly incarcerated herself, works for ROAR program partner Bridgeway Recovery Services. She credits a five-year stint in the state prison system with saving her life.

“Many incarcerated women have the odds stacked up against them from the beginning of their time in prison: mental health, addiction and minimal support,” she says. “The experience of being released from prison can be incredibly overwhelming and emotional. It is a realization that the world continued on without you. That children have grown older, that simple things like banking or shopping can be hard in so many ways.”

Nelson believes ROAR can set women up for success and help ease the stressful transition back to their community.

“Now, as a mentor, I get to build relationships with women with similar experiences to mine,” she says. “The combination of substance use disorder treatment and a mentor’s ability to relate to the challenges of incarceration create a support system that can help to normalize the emotions they are experiencing around release.”

The ROAR experience

A cross-disciplinary approach, ROAR combines initiation of medication and peer support with an ongoing link to community substance use disorder treatment, prior to release.

In the month before leaving Coffee Creek Correctional Facility, Oregon’s only women’s prison, program participants connect with certified recovery mentors via “reach-in” visits, which help to prepare participants to enter community-based treatment. The visits also help to educate adults in custody about the importance of carrying a nasal naloxone overdose rescue kit, commonly known as Narcan, upon release. All participants are released with Narcan rescue kits provided by the project.

Women who elect to participate in the ROAR pilot study receive an injection of extended release naltrexone from a correctional health services provider in the week prior to release. Extended-release naltrexone is an opioid antagonist drug that can block the effects of opioids for up to four weeks, as well as provide overdose protection.

Following incarceration, a certified recovery mentor will help the study participant connect to substance use disorder treatment and provide support for treatment retention and ongoing recovery efforts. Participants can work with their health care providers at partnering treatment recovery facilities, CODA and Bridgeway Recovery Services, to continue extended-release naltrexone or explore alternative treatments.

Tracking ROAR impacts

Working with Oregon’s Department of Corrections, Department of Human Services and the Oregon Health Authority, Waddell and colleagues will use vital statistics, hospital and Medicaid data interviews to assess the pilot project’s impact on overdose rates among participants in four Oregon counties — Clackamas, Marion, Multnomah and Washington — compared with women released in the rest of the state. Insights obtained from the participants will help the research team assess feasibility and acceptability of scaling up the project in future years.

“We’ll follow these women to learn about their experiences in the program, conducting interviews with them as well as their mentors and clinicians, for six months after their release,” says Waddell, who hopes to involve 100 participants in the program over the next 18 months.

She and the research team hope to see a reduction in overdose rates, and, together with the Department of Corrections, identify concrete, feasible strategies for scaling up the program to reach both men and women incarcerated in Oregon and other states. Results are anticipated 2022.

This work is funded by a $2 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (grant: 1 R01CE003008-01-00). Study partners include OHSU, PSU, Oregon State University, Oregon Department of Corrections, Comagine Health, CODA, Inc. and Bridgeway Recovery Services.
