The Hartford’s Ability Equipped Program Named a 2019 Rings of Gold Recipient By United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee

The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee has named The Hartford’s Ability Equipped program as its 2019 Rings of Gold award recipient for making adaptive sport equipment and opportunities more accessible to athletes of various ages and skill levels nationwide. The award will be presented at the awards gala on Friday, September 13 as part of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Assembly in Colorado Springs.

In partnership with Disabled Sports USA, The Hartford’s Ability Equipped program is empowering athletes with disabilities to experience the life-changing power of sport by making adaptive equipment more readily available throughout the United States. With The Hartford’s three-year, $2.2 million contribution, Ability Equipped aims to increase the capacity of community grassroots organizations and bridge the gap to elite sport opportunities by identifying, supporting and empowering the 250+ athletes, ages 13-24, who comprise the Disabled Sports USA Elite Team.

Through The Hartford’s Ability Equipped program, over $300,000 in equipment grants will be awarded to more than 120 Disabled Sports USA (DSUSA) Elite Team athletes competing across all the Paralympic sports. Ten of these athletes recently represented Team USA in five different sports at the Parapan American Games Lima 2019, including 22 year-old Casey Followay from Wooster, Ohio. Followay was named to the DSUSA Elite Team in 2016 and received an Ability Equipped grant to purchase adaptive sports equipment, namely a new racing chair. “This type of equipment is expensive. I am very honored to be involved with DSUSA and grateful for the generosity. This will help me achieve the goals I set when I was young.” One of his goals is to represent Team USA at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

Adaptive sports equipment is an important investment that will help grow the Paralympic Movement and sustain future Paralympians’ opportunities to develop and compete. With adaptive sports equipment often costing more than five times as much as mainstream sport equipment, the Ability Equipped program aims to empower adaptive athletes to reach their full potential.

The program is already showing success across key indicators. Within a year of the first round of grants, which were distributed in December 2018, six DSUSA chapters saw a 76 percent increase in program days, an 82 percent increase in equipment inventory, a 111 percent increase in volunteers, a 148 percent increase in instructors and trainers, and a 62 percent increase in program participants, with more than 1,110 new participants – including 25 percent youth. Additionally, the Ability Equipped program awarded $305,000 to seven DSUSA chapters in August 2019, and will award another $340,000 in 2020 – all building toward the ultimate goal to introduce more than 60,000 youth with disabilities to adaptive sport by the Los Angles Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2028. By investing in these local organizations that provide sport opportunities to youth, especially in underserved geographic locations, the program is fostering healthier, happier and more inclusive communities and teaching youth valuable life skills through sports. Embodying the philosophy of Olympism, Ability Equipped emphasizes the joy found in effort, as participants are chosen based not on their previous accomplishments, but on their proven commitment and desire to achieve Paralympic greatness.

Other awards, including the Olympic Torch Award, Jack Kelly Fair Play Award and Diversity & Inclusion Award, will also be presented.

Eating Recovery Foundation Convenes Eating Disorder and Mental Health Experts to Explore New Trends and Developments

Eating disorder and mental health experts from across the country and around the world will convene in Denver October 11-12 to learn and collaborate on emerging trends and new approaches for treating mood, anxiety, trauma and eating disorders at the 12th annual Eating Disorder Foundation conference: Navigating Resistance and Emerging Treatments for Eating Disorders, Mood and Anxiety Disorders, and Trauma.

Highlights of the two-day educational event include a keynote address by Frank Warren, founder of the PostSecret movement and author of six New York Times bestsellers. Frank used his experience as a crisis counselor to develop a community where people mail in anonymous post cards with a secret they want to share. He’s received millions of anonymous secrets and every Sunday, Frank selects some to share on the Post Secret website. The stories of how those secrets help to connect people have resulted in his six books, numerous presentations and museum exhibits across six continents over the past 10 years. $1 Million Awarded for Prevention, Treatment and Recovery Efforts to ‘Fight’ Opioid Addiction in Stephens County Through “HOPE” Initiative


“This award is an asset that will provide much-needed funding for prevention, treatment, and recovery efforts to ‘fight’ opioid addiction, reduce the high rate of fatal overdose here in Stephens County and make a positive impact on people’s lives in our community,” -Kathy Whitmire.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), has awarded $1 million to the Stephens County Mental Health Collaborative, in partnership with the Georgia Partnership for Telehealth, to fund the efforts of the “HOPE for a Drug Free Stephens Initiative” started in 2018 to mitigate the effects of the opioid crisis on individuals and families in Stephens County. The $1 million award was issued by HRSA to Georgia Partnership for Telehealth (GPT), which will be the fiscal agent and coordinator of the grant funds and will oversee its execution. The funds will cover expenses needed for programming and services over a three-year period of performance. “It is an honor to partner with Stephens County in this endeavor to improve outcomes and access to Opioid Use Disorder Treatment and recovery through telehealth solutions,” said GPT’s COO and Grant Project Director Sherrie Williams.

The members of the Stephens County Mental Health Consortium include Georgia Partnership for Telehealth, Stephens County Hospital Emergency Department, Avita Community Partners, Stephens County Sheriff, Toccoa Police Department, Stephens County EMS, Open Arms Free Clinic, Toccoa Clinic, Family Connections, Stephens County Hospital Physicians, Stephens County Development Authority, and local business leaders and supporting organizations committed to improving access to mental health services, and to reducing the overdose death rate in Stephens County from the use of opiates and controlled substances.

“This award is an asset that will provide much-needed funding for prevention, treatment, and recovery efforts to ‘fight’ opioid addiction, reduce the high rate of fatal overdose here in Stephens County and make a positive impact on people’s lives in our community,” said Consortium Co-chair and Grant Program Manager, Kathy Whitmire.

In 2018 the County Health Rankings website reported an average of 16 fatal opioid and related substance use overdoses annually in Stephens County. Stephens County Emergency Department reported 117 non-fatal opioid/SUD overdoses. The goal of the consortium’s HOPE Initiative is to strengthen our community’s capacity to change the skyrocketing trend in years of potential life lost by targeting more integrated and comprehensive substance use disorder/opioid use disorder (SUD/OUD) prevention, treatment and recovery support.

As an award recipient, the Consortium’s goal will be to implement a set of core SUD/OUD prevention, treatment, and recovery activities that align with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Five-Point Strategy to Combat the Opioid Crisis.

To meet this goal, the Consortium identified the following steps in its grant request:

Prevention: The HOPE Initiative will reduce the occurrence and associated risk of OUD among new and at-risk users, as well as fatal opioid-related overdoses through community and provider education, harm reduction strategies, and referral to treatment and recovery support services.

Treatment: The HOPE Initiative will implement and expand access to evidence-based practices, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT) with psychosocial intervention, and eliminate or reduce treatment costs for uninsured and underinsured patients.

Recovery: The HOPE Initiative will expand access to recovery and treatment options that help people in Stephens County battling OUD and will track the number that start and stay in recovery, including socio-economic assessment to ensure access to support services such as transportation, housing, peer recovery, case management, employment assistance, and childcare.

Center for Vein Restoration (CVR) is proud to announce the addition of Rodney A. Sirk, MD, RVT, RPhS to its expanding and esteemed roster of physicians treating venous disease throughout the country. His practice in Fairhope will be the third CVR location in Alabama alongside Dr. Kenneth Todd’s Dothan practice and Dr. Michael Aikens’ practice in Opelika. Dr. Rodney Sirk comes to CVR after a 20-year medical career, dedicated primarily to Phlebology. He has operated Fairhope Vein Treatment Center LLC, an independent vein practice, since 2014.

Dr. Sirk joined the US Air Force after high school where he spent seven years as an enlisted Airman and served as an Aeromedical Evacuation Specialist in Operation Desert Storm. After receiving an honorable discharge in 1991, he entered the Marshall University’s School of Medicine in Huntington. Dr. Sirk graduated in 1995 and completed his residency in Family Medicine at Marshall University in 1998.

In the first decade of his career, Dr. Sirk focused on general medicine (inpatient, ICU, and outpatient). After completing additional training in Birmingham, Alabama, he transitioned to focus entirely on Phlebology in 2010. Dr. Sirk is a Diplomate of the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine, and a member of the American Vein and Lymphatic Society and the American Venous Forum. He also specializes in ultrasound imaging as a Registered Vascular Technician and a Registered Phlebology Sonographer.

Catalent Announces the Appointment of David Schaffer to Biologics Advisory Board

He completed his bachelor’s at Stanford University, before undertaking his doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and postdoctoral training at the Salk Institute.
