Focus on Transparent Pricing Efforts are Centerpiece of SPBA Fall Meeting

Improving quality while lowering costs continues to be at the top of the list. There are exciting developments in this area and SPBA member TPAs, Stop-Loss and Service Partners are in the forefront. — Anne Lennan, SPBA President

During its Fall Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona last week, the Society of Professional Benefit Administrators (SPBA) convened for three days of educational sessions focused on the regulatory matters and recent policy developments that impact self-funded health plans. Highlights included sessions that focused on cost containment ideas, such as the sessions on Specialty Drugs/Biosimilars, Direct Primary Care Trends, Health Literacy, Reference-Based Pricing and Captives.

SPBA also discussed its most important member updates, including SPBA President Anne Lennan’s appointment to the newly-formed Air Ambulance and Patient Billing Advisory Board.

Industry experts joined SPBA’s membership of third party administrators (TPAs), Stop-Loss Partners, and Service Partners to lead sessions on topics that impact TPA businesses daily, including the economic impacts of Medicare-for-all and Medicare fee-pricing, and how on-site medical clinics impact self-funded health plans. These insights are critical to helping TPAs and their partners give plan participants the best guidance for their unique needs.

“SPBA listens carefully to the membership on the types of educational sessions that are most beneficial,” said Lennan. “Improving quality while lowering costs continues to be at the top of the list. There are exciting developments in this area and SPBA member TPAs, Stop-Loss and Service Partners are in the forefront.”

One key topic addressed at the Meeting was data privacy and security issues, going beyond HIPAA to consider approaches emerging from the European Union and other legislation in Colorado and California.

SPBA’s IT Task Force presented a special track on key topics related to technology in self-funded health plans including machine learning vs. AI for TPA businesses and EDI Capabilities vs. API Technology in administrative transactions. Health literacy sessions focused on sound business practices to help plan participants consider higher quality and better priced providers, while technology literacy sessions focused on how non-technical healthcare leaders can expand their knowledge to best advise clients and navigate innovation in the healthcare industry.

SPBA is the national association of Third Party Administration (TPA) firms that manage client employee benefit plans. It is estimated that over 75% of U.S. workers and their dependents in non-federal health coverage are in plans administered by TPAs. The clients of TPA firms include every size and format of employment, including large and small employers, state/county/city plans, union, non-union, collectively bargained multiemployer plans, as well as most industries and professions.

Atlantic Shores Retirement Community Vocal Groups Use Music for Therapy and Personal Expression

https://www.prweb.com/

Atlantic Shores Chorus

We’re thrilled to bring music that brightens their souls.

Their talents light up a room, but it’s not just audiences that are inspired as they experience a performance by vocal groups from Atlantic Shores Retirement Community in Virginia Beach, Virginia, it’s the chorus members themselves. The only retirement community in the region with both a four-part chorus and special ensemble group, Atlantic Shores proactively supports music education and performance for the personal expression of their musically talented residents, to enrich the lives of its independent living, assisted living and memory care residents, to give back to the greater community, and to span the generations.

The long tradition of resident musical groups began almost 23 years ago when Atlantic Shores first opened. Resident Dean Hatheway, who loved to sing in his Barber Shop Quartet, started the first group, Community Singing. They performed with no accompaniment, but with Dean leading songs with his harmonica. This group evolved into the Forget-Me-Notes, an a cappella group started in 2009 by resident Mike Ferguson, who led with skills learned in his church choir. When the choir was in need of a new director, resident Don Beamon reached out to former resident Beth Smallwood with a request for her to teach them a song in three-part harmony, after which she was asked to remain as their leader.

A trained vocalist, band member and professional piano teacher, her first act as director was to change the name of the group to the Atlantic Shores Chorus. She put out a call for singers, and discovered many who had never participated before. The group’s 40 members range from those who sang in college and community choruses, to an 89 year-old Methodist minister who had never learned to read music.

Members also expressed interest in creating a smaller group to do special performances inside and outside the community as a show choir. Tryouts were held, and 12 members selected to create the Atlantic Shores Coastal Singers.

Both groups perform a wide variety of styles, with almost half the music arranged by Beth, and rehearsals held once a week.

The groups delight fellow residents throughout the year, with a season running from September through May, always ending with a popular Memorial Day concert. Performances for 250 guests are held in the community’s beautiful Chesapeake Room. Special sing-along shows are created for Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day. Patriotic songs are featured in a special Veteran’s Day celebration. In the off-season, July and August, the chorus performs sing-along’s for the community, including a special preview of songs they will be performing in the fall.

Throughout the year, several themed shows add to the fun, including the upcoming “Cruise Around The Word,” performance, and “The Weather Channel” performance, starring resident Bob Burchett as a weatherman announcing weather-themed songs like “Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head.” A special multigenerational Christmas concert is being planned for this year, with Virginia Beach’s Ocean Lakes High School students joining the chorus for a special holiday event at Atlantic Shores.

Performances frequently integrate actors or dancers for an additional element of fun, including fellow resident groups, like Atlantic Shores’ Friday morning dance group.

Throughout the years, many memorable performances have especially touched the group’s director. According to Beth, “My favorite one has to be our Broadway Musicals performance featuring Rogers & Hammerstein, and Gershwin. It was challenging because there were so many songs, but also so beautiful, especially when our resident couple, the Beamons, danced to the Tennessee Waltz.”

The Coastal Singers provide a very special welcome to new Atlantic Shores residents by performing at New Member’s Tea events, and also entertain local church and civic groups at luncheons and meetings held at Atlantic Shores. The group also donates their time to perform for organizations in the area, like the Thoroughgood Ladies Music Club.

One of the most popular and rewarding ways this group uses its musical talents is by performing each month for residents at Harbourway, Atlantic Shores’ assisted living facility. The interactive sing-along concerts are one of the most eagerly anticipated social events, and also serve as informal music therapy for the residents.

According to Beth, “I’m a psychiatric nurse, so I know the value of music therapy. Many of these residents have physical disabilities or cognitive challenges. We’re thrilled to bring music that brightens their souls. They even come early to listen to our rehearsals.” Atlantic Shores Chorus and Coastal Singers member Shirley Barcus adds, “It’s so obvious that these wonderful residents really enjoy the music, they always smile and sing along. Their joy brings me joy.”

Musical talents at Atlantic Shores extend beyond singing, to a pool of talented musicians who use instruments to perform, including a couple that plays duets on the piano, residents and staff who play the guitar, and even a gentleman who plays the harmonica.

The community’s love of music also attracts talented performers from around the region, who stage four to five performances at Atlantic Shores every week. Big Bands play for special parties, grade school children sing for afternoon gatherings, and popular local bands take to the stage for Atlantic Shores’ popular weekly TGIF happy hours. And young rising stars from The Hurrah Players, Virginia’s leading family theatre company, pack the house to perform portions of their acclaimed stage shows.

In turn, Atlantic Shores residents frequently attend a wide range of area performances including, Tidewater Winds, Symphonicity, Symphony by the Sea, and Big Bands on the Bay. And Atlantic Shores has a tradition of supporting the performing arts by partnering with the Virginia Opera, and the Sandler Center.

As the musical “face” of the retirement community, Atlantic Shores’ vocal performance groups continue a tradition that is driven by its member’s love of performance. Beth agrees, “Their enthusiasm is amazing. They’re always prepared, eager, gracious, and ready to go above and beyond. Whether performing or just rehearsing, they say the experience fills them with happiness. For that we are all grateful.”

Balluff’s New Light Array with IO-Link Identifies Size and Position with Precision

News Image

Balluff’s newest laser light array provides a compact solution for precisely identifying the size and location of objects. The BLA0007 can measure the size of up to six objects in its 16 mm light field, enabling them to operate several work modes at once, including the following:

  • Object diameter
  • Object position
  • Gap width
  • Gap position
  • Edge position

Also, they offer additional modes such as counting and nominal/actual comparisons, which users can use simultaneously. If needed, it can be programmed to blank an area, so objects in that part of the array don’t trigger the sensor. Additionally, they can measure object height or gap dimensions, monitor hole placement or size, and detect the web edge of material like paper or cloth, including many transparent materials that are optically demanding. They can detect cable, wire, or threads as small as 0.3 mm.

Key features include:

  • Exact position detection
  • Simple size differentiation of diameters
  • Quality inspection gap dimensions
  • Precise edge detection

Xulon Press Author and Minister Hopes Each One of His Readers Discover Their Purpose

News Image

You’d be surprised to know how many people wonder why they even entered this world in the first place….

Author Sam Richardson, Jr. believes that many people search for their life’s meaning in all the wrong places. In his new book,Live On Purpose ($11.49, paperback, 9781545675892; $5.99, e-book, 9781545675908), he points his readers to a deeper purpose in life than a job, a status or meaningless relationships.

“You’d be surprised to know how many people wonder why they even entered this world in the first place….They feel that if they disappeared tomorrow, they would easily be replaced by another. It is unfortunate, but it is because they have yet to realize just how meaningful their life is!” said Richardson.

Sam Richardson, Jr. was raised in Prichard, Alabama and felt God’s calling into the ministry at the age of 18. It was through this calling that he became determined not only to discover purpose, but to live on purpose.

New Heartland Alliance Data Shows Most Significant Increase in Uninsured Individuals In Almost A Decade

News Image

“The historic gains in health coverage made possible by the Affordable Care Act have slowed and are reversing. These data are deeply concerning and suggest the unrelenting opposition to the ACA and threats to public programs are taking a toll on those who need services most.” Katie Buitrago

And Illinois saw a decline in Medicaid coverage for over 106,000 non-seniors from 2017 to 2018, a drop of 0.8 percentage points. Almost all of the people who lost Medicaid were in the Chicago six county area. These new data show us that the years of positive trends in increasing coverage seem to have come to an extreme halt.

“The historic gains in health coverage made possible by the Affordable Care Act have slowed and are now reversing,” said Katie Buitrago, Director of Research at Heartland Alliance. “These data are deeply concerning and suggest that the unrelenting opposition to the ACA and continuous threats to public programs are taking a toll on those who need these services most.”

The repeal of the individual mandate, the gutting of the enrollment assistance programs, and the expansion of low-quality “short-term” health plans have sown confusion throughout communities and contributed to this drop in coverage. But it is not only the executive orders, bureaucratic barriers, and regulatory changes that have resulted in millions more going uninsured—the Trump Administration’s anti-immigrant policies have also contributed to coverage losses. Latino Americans experienced a 1.6 percentage point decline in coverage, with non-citizens experiencing an even higher 2.3 percentage point decline. This dramatic rise in the uninsured rate strongly suggests that immigrant communities are being discouraged from signing up for health coverage and public benefits. The recent “public charge” rule change that penalizes immigrants seeking to naturalize if they are low-income or use public benefits is a prime example of the policy proposals that lead to this sort of chilling effect.

“These attacks on families are pushing people into poverty and into the shadows,” said Dan Rabbitt, Heartland Alliance Health Policy Expert. “Families are being forced, out of fear and necessity, to decide if they should obtain health coverage, and that is not a decision anyone should be forced to make. Our leaders should be working to provide quality, affordable health care to all, reduce out of pocket health costs, and increase coverage options for immigrants, not chipping away at supports that keep our communities healthy.”

In addition to these findings, Heartland Alliance has release a fact sheet looking at income, poverty and health insurance in Illinois and Chicago. View it here
