The Rigaku Supermini200 analyzer is the world’s only high-power (200 W) benchtop sequential WDXRF spectrometer for elemental analysis of oxygen (O) through uranium (U) of almost any material. It uniquely delivers low cost-of-ownership with high resolution and lower limits of detection (LLD).

Benchtop and on-line energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometers for multi-element analysis of solids, liquids and powders and X-ray transmission (XRT) instrumentation from Applied Rigaku Technologies, Inc. (ART) are being presented at Booth #102.

The compact Rigaku NEX QC series of benchtop analyzers is positioned to meet the changing demands of the petroleum industry. On display at the event is the enhanced Rigaku NEX QC+ EDXRF analyzer featuring next generation silicon detector (SDD) technology, offering significant improvement in elemental peak resolution and counting statistics.

Also at the conference is the Rigaku NEX DE analyzer, developed for heavy industrial applications and engineered to maximize flexibility and ease of use. The system operates on the latest Rigaku QuantEZ analytical software, which runs on the Microsoft Windows operating system and was specifically designed for the Rigaku family of benchtop EDXRF analyzers

For real time process control needs, ART offers the Rigaku NEX XT process sulfur in oil analyzer and the Rigaku NEX OL process multi-element analyzer.

Rigaku Analytical Devices (RAD) manufactures Raman and laser induced breakdown (LIBS) analyzers, and will present the Rigaku KT-100S handheld LIBS spectrometer. As petrochemical, petroleum and power plants have put more stringent positive material identification (PMI) and PMI testing programs in place to avoid component or equipment failure, PMI tests are performed to confirm that components meet alloy composition and grade specifications where metal components are mission critical.

Potential Link Between Heart Disease and Tooth Loss Highlights Need for Good Oral Healthcare, says Beverly Hills Periodontics and Dental Implant Center

An October 4 article on US News reports on preliminary findings that add to the mounting evidence suggesting a correlation between tooth loss and heart disease. The researchers found that individuals between 40 and 79 who had lost all of their teeth had a 28 percent chance of also having heart-related problems, compared to just seven percent for those who never lost any of their teeth. While the study has yet to be peer-reviewed and published, the initial findings are backed by an ongoing flow of evidence from other studies suggesting that poor gum health and missing teeth are strongly associated with heart problems and other serious overall health issues. Oftentimes, teeth also begin to shift and become malaligned. That is just the beginning, says the clinic, because untreated periodontal disease makes losing teeth likely. Missing teeth, in addition to other issues discussed above, invariably encourage bone loss which can lead to the loss of more teeth that can lead to a rapid downward spiral. Patients experiencing gum disease symptoms should most certainly visit their dentist sooner rather than later, the center continues, as periodontal disease almost never gets better on its own.

Reluctant patients should be aware that today’s treatments have evolved to better minimize discomfort and childhood memories may tend to exaggerate the stress associated with oral health work. One family’s decision to donate gave Khalieghya and her family the hope they needed as they watched her fight to stay alive as a baby in desperate need of a transplant.

Khalieghya Dandie-Evans, a liver transplant recipient from Richmond, Calif. was chosen by Donor Network West to ride atop the Donate Life Rose Parade® float in the 131st Rose Parade® on New Year’s Day. She will represent the thousands of people impacted by organ and tissue donation across Northern California and Northern Nevada, the organization’s service area.

Khalieghya, 17, grew up believing it was “normal” to have received an organ transplant. She was born prematurely and diagnosed with biliary atresia soon after birth. A liver from a four-year-old donor saved her life when she was only six months old.

“Being a transplant recipient is all I have known; I thought that everybody got transplants. I am very happy to be alive today as I have lost friends due to transplant-related complications,” says Khalieghya with a bright smile.

Her smile, however, does not embody all of what she and her family went through for her to be alive today. After her transplant at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford, she had to endure many medical tests, hospital visits, surgeries, and treatments.

The year 2020 is very special for Khalieghya; not only will she be a part of the Rose Parade, she will be graduating from high school with honors. Until then, she continues to advocate for organ donation as a Donate Life Ambassador with Donor Network West and volunteers with her local police department and community programs focused on mental illness and resources for the homeless. She is also a member of her high school’s Black Student Union and a multi-sport athlete.

Maison Louis Roederer is delighted to announce the appointment of Nicole Carter as President of Merry Edwards Winery starting October 15, 2019. In her role, she will be responsible for all business activities and will work closely with Head Winemaker Heidi von der Mehden. Nicole will also work hand-in-hand with Merry Edwards to ensure a smooth and successful transition to the next chapter of the life of the winery.

Nicole was previously Chief Marketing Officer and Director of Winemaking for Hess Family Wine Estates, leading global marketing initiatives, new product development and winemaking across all California and Argentina brands in their portfolio.

She spent the prior two decades at Treasury Wine Estates, where she served in various executive management roles including team leadership of luxury marketing, exports, distributor management, public relations, events and sponsorships, direct-to-consumer and hospitality focusing both domestically and internationally for super premium brands.

Nicole previously represented several beverage companies in Washington, D.C., and later continued her role in public affairs in California, serving as Director of Communications for the California Coastal Commission.

My wine career started 25 years ago in Sonoma County and it is a welcomed homecoming to return as the steward of such an amazing winery,” says Nicole Carter. A graduate of the American University in Washington, D.C., Ms. Carter is a Certified Specialist of Wine and holds additional certifications from the Court of Master Sommeliers, the Wine & Spirits Education Trust and the Culinary Institute of America Wine School in Napa Valley. She has extensive knowledge of winemaking and viticulture, and is an accomplished open water swimmer, including several crossings from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco.

Merry Edwards Winery

In 1997, family and friends joined Merry to found Merry Edwards Winery, with a focus on producing Pinot Noirs, Sauvignon Blancs and Chardonnays with a sense of place from Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast. In 2008, she and her husband, Ken Coopersmith, completed their winery, where tastings are hosted to educate visitors about Merry’s handcrafted wines and site-specific viticulture. In addition to this property, their estate vineyards include Meredith Estate, Coopersmith, Georganne, Warrens’ Hill and Richaven. Merry and Ken have also partnered with several trusted growers to supplement this estate production.

Award-Winning Journalist, Ashley Lyles, Named Miss New York International 2020

Ashley Lyles, 24, of New York City, was crowned Miss New York International and will go on to compete for the title of Miss International 2020 during the final competition in Kingsport, Tenn., July 30-Aug. 1, 2020. Lyles is an award-winning medical journalist and an aspiring physician. She travels to domestic and international medical society meetings, primarily covering cardiology.

During her reign as Miss New York International, Lyles will devote much of her time to her platform Arrest the Risk, the American Heart Association (AHA), and the AHA Go Red for Women movement. As an ambassador for AHA and the movement, she will focus on CPR training for young women and youth. She will also contribute to cardiovascular disease prevention efforts internationally. Her passion for heart health is driven by her father’s battle with heart disease, which resulted in sudden cardiac arrest and sextuple bypass surgery.

“His lifeless body was literally lying face down on a moving treadmill. No one working at the gym that day knew how to perform CPR or how to use a defibrillator. I am more determined than ever to make sure what happened to my dad becomes a thing of the past,” says Lyles.

International Pageants, Inc. supports Go Red for Women through nation-wide volunteer and financial support. Her father’s battle with heart disease is the inspiration behind her pursuit of a career as a medical journalist and as a cardiologist. She is a graduate of New York University’s Science, Health & Environmental Reporting Program (NYU SHERP). Previously, she studied professional writing at Michigan State University.

Her talent and passion for heart health awareness earned her the 2017 Cardiovascular Research Foundation’s Jason Kahn Medical Journalism Fellowship and a seat on its Women’s Heart Health Initiative Advisory Committee. Her work has taken her to Honduras, Cambodia, France, and Ghana and has appeared in outlets like The New York Times Daily 360, PBS NewsHour, The Huffington Post, The Root, and Tonic (Vice), among others. A true champion of children’s literacy, Ashley was appointed by former Southfield mayor Brenda Lawrence to serve as a student representative for the Southfield Public Library Board.

The Miss International Pageant is owned and operated by International Pageants, Inc., which also operates Mrs. International, Miss Teen International, and Miss Pre-Teen International pageants. It is the only platform-based pageant system dedicated to highlighting women’s accomplishments through community service.
