Brenda Doles, Principal of HCRS, To Attend WPO Conference in Las Vegas

News Image

It doesn’t matter what business you run. In this day and age, you can’t operate without data, and you can’t do well without strong data management.

Brenda Doles, principal of HCRS, is excited to attend the Women Presidents Organization’s Entrepreneurial Excellence Forum coming up May 10 – 12 in Las Vegas, Nevada. As noted on their website, this WPO event serves as “the premier gathering of women entrepreneurs who lead multi-million-dollar businesses,” with a focus on how to “build relationships, foster connections, and learn innovative ways to grow and thrive as individuals and leaders.”

As a member for 11 years, Doles is looking forward to the forum. “It’s always a source of inspiration meeting with fellow members and newcomers,” she notes. “Some of the most powerful stories … listening to Viola Davis tell her story, and how she managed to overcome extreme poverty and abuse. Despite these challenges, she never allowed anyone to dim her light, and from my perspective, she is a beacon of light.”

When we ask what Doles expects to see this year, she says, “building new relationships, learning innovative ways to grow and thrive as a leader, and exploring what’s shaping tomorrow’s markets.”

Doles adds that she also wouldn’t be surprised if the subjects of cybersecurity and data management both come up during plenty of conversations — and not simply because these are areas where her company excels. “It doesn’t matter what business you run,” Doles says. “In this day and age, you can’t operate without data, and you can’t do well without strong data management. The growing number of digital threats, coupled with increased enforcement for government contractors when it comes to CMMC [the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification], means that everyone needs to be concerned about how they record, organize, share, and protect their mission-critical information.”

Those who are interested in attending the WPO’s Entrepreneurial Excellence Forum can sign up on their website’s event page.

Orthofix STIM onTrack Recognized for Patient Engagement Innovation in 2023 MedTech Breakthrough Awards Program

News Image

“This award belongs to our dedicated team of employees who always put the patient first – we are grateful to them, and we are very pleased to accept this award from MedTech Breakthrough.” – Kevin Kenny, President of Orthofix Global Spine

MedTech Breakthrough, an independent market intelligence organization that recognizes the top companies, technologies and products in the global health and medical technology market, today announced that Orthofix, a global medical device company with a spine and orthopedics focus, has been selected as winner of the “Best Patient Engagement Mobile App” award in the 7th annual MedTech Breakthrough Awards program. The award recognizes the breakthrough innovation of the Orthofix STIM onTrack™ mobile app.

Developed to work with the latest generation CervicalStim™, SpinalStim™, and PhysioStim™ bone growth therapy devices, the STIM onTrack mobile app is designed to help patients adhere to their prescriptions and improve their clinical outcomes. For use with smartphones and other mobile devices, the app features include daily treatment reminders and device usage calendars to help patients stay on schedule with their therapy. Additionally, the app enables the sharing of treatment data and includes a patient reported outcome measure questionnaire (PROM). These responses are available to physicians in order to assist in understanding current treatment progress and overall recovery status for their patients.

“We are very proud of the STIM onTrack app and the work that went into developing this tool to assist patients in their recovery efforts,” said Kevin Kenny, President of Orthofix Global Spine. “This award belongs to our dedicated team of employees who always put the patient first – we are grateful to them, and we are very pleased to accept this award from MedTech Breakthrough.”

The STIM onTrack mobile app also provides links to educational patient resources and connects patients with a Patient Care team to help ensure patients understand their treatment regimens. Orthofix was the first to bring to market a patient mobile app for bone growth stimulation devices.

The mission of the MedTech Breakthrough Awards is to honor excellence and recognize the innovation, hard work and success in a range of health and medical technology categories, including Telehealth, Clinical Administration, Patient Engagement, Electronic Health Records (EHR), Virtual Care, Medical Devices, Medical Data and many more. This year’s program attracted more than 4,000 nominations from over 17 different countries throughout the world.

“Research has shown that patients who take a more active role in their recovery and follow-up care have better overall outcomes. Digitizing care on a mobile app takes a familiar device – our phones – and provides a beneficial pathway for patients to adhere to treatment. Medical technology advancements can and should be designed to improve patient outcomes,” said James Johnson, managing director, MedTech Breakthrough. “STIM onTrack allows patients to actively engage in their own treatment plan, and the addition of the PROM questionnaire enables their providers to gain even more insight on how a patient is responding in real time, not just when they come in for a follow up. We extend our sincere congratulations to the entire Orthofix team for taking home a well-deserved 2023 MedTech Breakthrough Award.”

Survey on Value of Flight Nursing Certification Featured in New Air Medical Journal Research Article

News Image

Today, over 5,700 RNs worldwide hold the Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN) credential offered by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing.

“Flight nurses must safely provide appropriate, timely, and evidence-based care for patients of all ages in a highly autonomous, dynamic environment.”

According to a survey of nearly 1,000 registered nurses caring for critically ill or injured patients in the uniquely demanding, complex and high-stakes flight environment, flight nurses earn the Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN) nursing specialty certification “to validate their clinical and patient care excellence, prepare themselves for the flight transport environment, for a competitive hiring advantage, and to lead by example.”

The 2022 Certified Flight Registered Nurse Pulse Survey, whose findings appear in a new, peer-reviewed Air Medical Journal original research article, is the first value of certification study of the CFRN flight nursing specialty credential. The CFRN was introduced by the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) in July 1993. Today, there are over 5,700 CFRNs worldwide.

To earn the complex and multifaceted CFRN credential, nurses must pass a rigorous exam whose content spans clinical knowledge and professional issues specific to air medical transports, as well as safety, survival, disaster preparedness, scene operations management, communications, and equipment and aircraft knowledge.

“As the air medical transport community prepares to mark a milestone in our commitment to excellence, safety, and advancing patient care with the upcoming 30-year anniversary of flight nursing specialty certification, Air Medical Journal is pleased to present this important research,” said Air Medical Journal co-editor Eric R. Swanson, MD, FACEP, University of Utah School of Medicine, Division of Emergency Medicine, Salt Lake City, Utah.

According to the CFRN-certified nurses who responded to the BCEN survey:

  • The top perceived benefits of being a CFRN are a sense of accomplishment and pride (91%), flight physiology knowledge (85%), flight nursing clinical knowledge (83%), and confidence as a flight nurse (81%).
  • Since 2012, the annual number of initial CFRN certifications has increased an average of 22%, contributing to a fourfold increase in annual initial CFRN certifications from 2012-2022.
  • 35% have over 10 years of flight nursing experience.
  • 43% are employed by a stand-alone transport program, and another 25% work for a university/academic hospital or university/academic trauma program.
  • 70% of their time is spent in rotor-wing aircraft and 21% in fixed-wing aircraft.
  • The majority of their patients (49%) are adults aged 18-65, followed by adults over 65 years old (35%), with smaller percentages of pediatric and neonatal patients.

“Flight nurses must safely provide appropriate, timely, and evidence-based care for patients of all ages in a highly autonomous, dynamic environment,” said article co-author and BCEN CEO Janie Schumaker, MBA, BSN, RN, CEN, CENP, CPHQ, FABC. “CFRN certification independently validates their advanced clinical and operational knowledge across all aspects of flight nursing, and the renewal process provides an invaluable framework to ensure their flight nursing expertise remains current and relevant over time.”

RNs responding to BCEN’s CFRN Pulse Survey in October and November 2022 evaluated the CFRN across 13 value of certification categories and shared nursing career and practice environment demographics, transport mode and patient population types, benefits of CFRN certification during the COVID-19 pandemic, and reasons for earning the CFRN.

Findings from BCEN’s companion survey on certification in the ground transport setting, The 2022 Certified Transport Registered Nurse Survey, appeared in the January/February 2023 issue of Air Medical Journal (available via free access).

“This CFRN certification study, in combination with the recent critical care ground transport companion study, provides important insight into what flight and critical care transport nurses perceive as benefits of advanced certification, and how holding a mode-specific transport credential validates their dedication to safety, professionalism, and patient care excellence in the out-of-hospital environment,” said article co-author Jacqueline C. Stocking, PhD, MBA, MSN, NEA-BC, CMTE, CEN, CFRN, FP-C, CCP-C, RN, NREMT-P, University of California Davis Medical Center, Sacramento, California. Stocking is a long-time editor of Air Medical Journal; her co-editor conducted the editorial process for this article.

Bringing Clinical Trial Access to Underserved Populations in a Community Setting, Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

Innovative and scalable solutions that are industry compliant are needed to make equity a reality, thus bringing clinical trial access to underserved populations.

Clinical trials are an important healthcare option, presenting benefits to patients, physicians and the broader community. Yet, relatively low enrollment rates have continued to be a bottleneck for clinical trials. In traditional research settings, about four percent of the US population has participated in a trial, of which only six percent represent Black and Latinx populations, even though those groups make up nearly 30 percent of the US population. Innovative and scalable solutions that are industry compliant are needed to make equity a reality, thus bringing clinical trial access to underserved populations.

This webinar will provide an opportunity to discover a model that provides clinical trial access to previously under-represented and underserved populations while removing barriers and unlocking doors to innovation. Imagine a trial that adjusts to patients’ schedules, travel capabilities and daily life obligations.

Join featured speakers from PPD and EmVenio Research as they lead a discussion of how localization — learning and adapting to a community’s local language, culture and traditions — has and can increase trial awareness, and clinical trial access to patients everywhere, making equity a reality, leading to an improved patient experience.

Register now to join the discussion on increasing study enrollment, enabling greater diversity and thinking differently about engaging underserved populations.

Join John Manns, Senior Director, Consultancy, Innovation & Strategy, Digital and Decentralized Solutions, PPD; Thad Wolfram, President, EmVenio Research; and Niambi Blodgett, Director, Global Patient Engagement, EmVenio Research, for the live webinar on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at 12pm EDT (9am PDT).

Sony Network Communications Europe Wins “Best Biometric Sensor Solution” MedTech Breakthrough Award For mSafety

News Image

With mSafety, any business can quickly be on their way to creating a world-class, intuitive, tailor-made remote health service based on connected wearables” – Jessica Tennhammar, Product Manager mSafety at Sony Network Communications Europe.

MedTech Breakthrough, an independent market intelligence organization that recognizes the top companies, technologies and products in the global health and medical technology market, today announced that Sony Network Communications Europe has been selected as a winner in the 7th annual MedTech Breakthrough Awards program, with Sony’s breakthrough mSafety solution selected out of over 80 nominees to take home the “Best Biometric Sensor Solution” award for 2023.

mSafety is a solution that helps companies tap into the power of digital biomarkers for their services. Using mSafety, it is easy to provide a remote digital health service for a range of different areas, like health and wellness, clinical trials or occupational health. With mSafety, Sony Network Communications Europe proves an understanding of the end user, and helps businesses optimize service features for those end users.

A digital health service on mSafety is unique in several ways. For one, each cellular mSafety wearable is a hub, as there is no need to pair with a secondary device. All the communication, connection to external sensors and user interaction takes place on the mSafety wearable – the user only has to put the wearable on. Another unique feature of a service on mSafety is that the wearable fleet of devices is easy to manage. Each device can be updated using FOTA (firmware-over-the-air), which makes it possible to stay in control remotely. Another key feature of an mSafety service is that companies can easily customize applications as their service grows. This includes designing the app, deciding what data is collected, how often, what is shown on the wearable display, connection to external sensors and more.

mSafety is made possible thanks to powerful technologies from Sony. Each mSafety device is created with world-class connectivity technologies and in-device sensors for health and activity data. IoT connectivity through LTE Cat-M1 allows for seamless data streams and enables reliable, automatic connection – essential to generating meaningful health insights and simplifying the tasks of end users and care providers. Additionally, mSafety is secure-by-design so businesses running a service on mSafety are fully in control of their collected data. The mSafety solution enables end-to-end encryption of application data from the wearable to the customer’s backend to ensure that no third party – including Sony – can access, view or adjust collected data.

To help businesses get started, mSafety offers ready-made applications. One example of a ready-made application on mSafety that customers can use out-of-the-box is the Digital Biomarker Solution. It is designed for businesses interested in efficient collection and management of raw health data for clinical research, algorithm development or otherwise. With the Digital Biomarker Solution, multiple data collection projects can be set up in the management interface, researchers can quickly onboard end-users with the wearable device and then start collecting, managing, storing and exporting raw data from a photoplethysmogram (PPG), gyroscope and accelerometer. The solution can also be configured remotely: toggle sensors on and off, or adjust the frequency and range of data collection. The ready-made solution helps researchers benefit from decentralization in their trials and addresses the need for simple tools that improve adherence and retention in clinical research.

“mSafety was designed to empower health experts themselves – in healthcare, workplace health & safety or pharma – who understand their industry challenges but lack the tools to solve them. With mSafety, any business can quickly be on their way to creating a world-class, intuitive, tailor-made remote health service based on connected wearables,” said Jessica Tennhammar, Product Manager mSafety at Sony Network Communications Europe.

“We are impressed with mSafety and the ready-made mSafety application called the Digital Biomarker Solution. mSafety from Sony makes it easy for a business to turn their vision of a wearable service into reality. And the Digital Biomarker Solution is no exception. Remote trials and raw health data can unlock new levels of insight for clinical trials, but both strategies have previously been difficult from a technological perspective. Sony tackles these complexities head-on. Congratulations on being our pick for the ‘Best Biometric Sensor Solution’ award,” said James Johnson, managing director, MedTech Breakthrough.

Special Book Integrates Biblical Knowledge to Explore the Topic of Grief

News Image

After administering a survey about grief, the respondents indicated they wanted to have a biblical basis for grief care. I chose the Bible book of Job because it was very familiar.

Author Loretta F. Baker provides readers with a biblical perspective on grief and change in Transformational Grief in the Book of Job ($13.99, paperback, 9781662875359; $25.99, hardcover, 9781662875366; $5.99, e-book, 9781662875373).

Baker, a Doctor of Ministry and grief care specialist, penned this extraordinarily helpful book to provide a refreshing perspective of grief to those who are hurting. While expected and unexpected losses are inevitable, Baker’s book is relatable to all, so it will certainly be appreciated by many readers. She explores the biblical book of Job, detailing the troubles, suffering, and losses of Job, while detailing his friends’ journey through the grieving process and how the Lord helped lead them to restoration. Baker believes that this study will help readers grow in their understanding of grief and accept that they, too, can be transformed with the help of the Lord and others. It’s a lesson for all to trust that God’s plans are good.

When asked what inspired the author to write this book, Baker said, “After administering a survey about grief, the respondents indicated they wanted to have a biblical basis for grief care. I chose the Bible book of Job because it was very familiar. This study was designed to give readers a biblical perspective on grief and change that could be useful in caring for themselves and one another.”

Rev. Dr. Baker holds a Master of Divinity in Theology from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry in Black Church Leadership from the School of Evangelism. She is an Associate Minister at Taylortown A.M.E. Zion Church where Presiding Elder Erich Von Shumake is the pastor. Rev. Dr. Baker is also an ACPE Spiritual Care Professional, a certified grief care specialist, and a Supernumerary Minister in the Kentucky Annual Conference of the A.M.E. Zion Church where she serves as a Christian educator. She is a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors and the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. Before accepting her call to ministry, Dr. Baker served as a church musician for more than 20 years.
