GE HealthCare Recognized for Breakthrough Ultrasound Technology Innovation in 2023 MedTech Breakthrough Awards Program

News Image

“We developed the Voluson™ Expert 22 from the ground-up to re-invent ultrasound, taking into account the current and future needs of clinicians providing precision diagnosis” – Gerald Seifriedsberger, General Manager, Women’s Health Ultrasound, GE HealthCare.

MedTech Breakthrough, an independent market intelligence organization that recognizes the top companies, technologies and products in the global health and medical technology market, today announced that it has selected GE HealthCare, a leading global precision health care innovator, as a winner in the 7th annual MedTech Breakthrough Awards program. The company was awarded “Best New Ultrasound Technology Solution” recognizing the breakthrough innovation of the Voluson™ Expert 22 Women’s Health ultrasound system.

Performing detailed exams with high-resolution can provide early insights into fetal health. By identifying fetal abnormalities earlier, clinicians can intervene sooner, plan for delivery, and potentially improve outcomes.

Both intuitive and customizable, the Voluson™ Expert 22 provides ultra-premium ultrasound imaging that increases exam speed and accuracy through its use of graphic-based beamformer technology and artificial intelligence (AI). The result is higher quality images and greater flexibility in workflow and imaging functions.

The Voluson™ Expert 22 features Lyric Architecture, which allows for more data and works in concert with specialized probe technology to unlock new imaging and processing power. This enables faster, sharper and clearer images and increased independence from body habitus (differing shape and size of the human body) and other difficult scanning conditions. By generating new levels of penetration, resolution, and frame rates to reveal fine anatomy in 2D/3D/4D with ease, the system delivers uniformity throughout the image with increased spatial and contrast resolution.

Clinicians can also make use of SonoLyst*, a virtual on-board tool that uses AI to automatically help identify fetal anatomy seen on standard views while enhancing efficiency by adding annotations and measurements. For quality assurance, SonoLyst can also be used to compare the image or view acquired to standard criteria helping ensure exam quality and consistency needed due to the shortage of skilled labor. Additionally, the system boasts Respond, a workflow enhancer that uses probe activation sensors to automatically initialize probes and presets when removed from the probe holder.

“Voluson™ Ultrasound products have a long-standing reputation of providing state-of-the-art technology for women’s health. We developed the Voluson™ Expert 22 from the ground-up to re-invent ultrasound, taking into account the current and future needs of clinicians providing precision diagnosis,” said Gerald Seifriedsberger, General Manager, Women’s Health Ultrasound, GE HealthCare. “We are therefore delighted to accept this award from MedTech Breakthrough, and pledge to continue to drive daily imaging efficiencies and innovate in women’s health.”

The mission of the MedTech Breakthrough Awards is to honor excellence and recognize the innovation, hard work and success in a range of health and medical technology categories, including Telehealth, Clinical Administration, Patient Engagement, Electronic Health Records (EHR), Virtual Care, Medical Devices, Medical Data and many more. This year’s program attracted more than 4,000 nominations from over 17 different countries throughout the world.

“Complex pregnancies demand advanced tools so clinicians can quickly and precisely diagnose or monitor a patient’s condition, and clinicians need a smart, intuitive medical ultrasound imaging system that can help them overcome workforce and training challenges. The breakthrough Voluson™ Expert 22 delivers on this need,” said James Johnson, managing director, MedTech Breakthrough. “With its unique features, clinicians can uncover critical answers sooner, discover key insights, and simplify complex cases for faster assessment, detection, and diagnosis. Congratulations to GE HealthCare on winning the ‘Best New Ultrasound Technology Solution” award for 2023.”

In Support of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Avery Dennison® Urges People to Consider the Benefits of Solar Protection Window Film for Buildings and Vehicles

Professionally installed architectural window film will block up to 99.9% of UV rays, while also rejecting solar heat and improving energy efficiency,” said Cassandra Yu, Avery Dennison architecture and retail segment lead for graphic materials and window films.

Skin Cancer Awareness Month is an annual May initiative of the nonprofit Skin Cancer Foundation*, which for more than 40 years has been helping people understand the importance of skin cancer prevention, early detection and prompt, effective treatment. As a member of the Foundation’s Corporate Council, Avery Dennison® Graphics Solutions is proud to encourage people to be proactive about daily sun protection, including through the use of automotive and architectural window film.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, with over 5 million cases diagnosed in the United States each year, skin cancer is America’s most common cancer. More people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. The Skin Cancer Foundation stresses that skin cancer is the cancer you can see: Early detection saves lives. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun causes skin cancer. UV rays also damage your eyes and cause your skin to lose elasticity, sag, stretch, bruise more easily, and age prematurely.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, some of the most important ways to protect ourselves from the sun include:

  • Avoiding prolonged exposure, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Covering up when outside with sun-protective clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
  • Avoiding getting sunburnt.
  • Liberally applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day.
  • Get all the details: Your Daily Sun Protection Guide.

The benefits of architectural window films

“One thing people don’t realize is that sun exposure can happen inside. Being exposed to UV rays passing through window glass is no different from being outside when it comes to sun damage,” says Dermatologist Elizabeth Buzney, M.D., in a video on the Skin Cancer Foundation website.

“Professionally installed architectural window film will block up to 99.9% of UV rays, protecting people from the sun while also rejecting solar heat, reducing fading of interior furnishings, and improving energy efficiency,” said Cassandra Yu, Avery Dennison architecture and retail segment lead for graphic materials and window films. “Avery Dennison offers a full suite of architectural window film in varying tints and with varying attributes to meet the needs of retail, industrial and office buildings, schools and homes,” she said. “Our window film installers tell us they are hearing from more people who have recovered from skin cancer and want to protect themselves and others from further exposure to the sun while they are inside their homes or place of work.”

The benefits of automotive window films

“Very few people think about sun protection while they’re driving,” Dr. Buzney says. “Studies have shown that in the U.S. there is more incidence of cancer on the left arm than the right arm due to driving. Just in my own clinical experience, I see more patients who have pre-cancerous spots as well as skin cancers on the left side of their face, neck and arm. It’s the reverse in places where they drive on the other side of the road.

“By law, car front windshields have a shatterproof film applied in the factory that also blocks 99% of UV rays,” Buzney says. “But the film is not on the other windows. That’s why we recommend having window film installed on the rest of the windows in the car, including the back windshield and the sunroof for maximum protection.”

“Automotive window films will block up to 99% of ultraviolet radiation,” said Avery Dennison Window Film Regional Technical Specialist Randy Garcia. “The best of these aftermarket films also reject heat and glare while protecting vehicle interiors from fading.

“Automotive window films come in a variety of shades and light transmission levels, all of which block UV radiation and glare,” he explained. “There are virtually clear window films as well, like our Shield IR 80, which also blocks up to 99% of UV rays and an impressive percentage of glare.

“People who spend a lot of time on the road—such as commercial truck drivers and those who drive a lot as part of their job—should be particularly concerned about sun exposure for the reasons cited by Dr. Buzney,” Garcia said.

“Your Avery Dennison window film dealer will help you select a film that meets the legal standard for how dark a tint is permitted by law while providing the appearance and protection you are looking for,” he added.

*Avery Dennison thanks the Skin Cancer Foundation as the source for much of the content in this release.

Healthy.io Wins 2023 MedTech Breakthrough Award

News Image

“Our mission is to empower patients to take charge of their health through accessible and affordable testing solutions. This 2023 MedTech Breakthrough Award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team in making that vision a reality” – Healthy.io chief technology officer, Ron Zohar.

MedTech Breakthrough, an independent market intelligence organization that recognizes the top companies, technologies, and products in the global health and medical technology market, today announced that Healthy.io, the global leader in transforming the smartphone camera into a medical device, has been selected as the winner of the “Best In-Home Testing Solution” award in the 7th annual MedTech Breakthrough Awards program, recognizing the breakthrough innovation of Healthy.io’s Minuteful Kidney at-home test kits.

Healthy.io’s patented, smartphone-based technology allows patients to perform clinical-grade medical tests from the comfort of their own homes, using only their smartphones and a set of easy-to-use testing kits to detect early signs of kidney damage. The results are delivered to healthcare providers in real-time, enabling faster diagnosis and treatment, and reducing the need for unnecessary doctor visits. Healthy.io recently received FDA clearance for its breakthrough technology that can turn any smartphone into a clinical-grade medical device.

Healthy.io’s Minuteful Kidney at-home test kits exemplify the company’s impact on the industry. These urine tests can be completed anywhere using a patient’s smartphone camera to assess their albumin-to-creatine ratio (ACR)—a key indicator of chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD can be fatal, and as it’s asymptomatic in its early stages, is commonly known as a ‘silent killer.’ Over 75 million Americans should complete an annual ACR test, but nearly 80% of them don’t because of various barriers to care.

“Our mission is to empower patients to take charge of their health through accessible and affordable testing solutions. This 2023 MedTech Breakthrough Award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team in making that vision a reality,” said Healthy.io chief technology officer, Ron Zohar. “Fighting kidney disease is a heavy burden on the U.S. healthcare system, costing it roughly $120 billion each year—Minuteful Kidney is helping address this problem. We are thrilled that MedTech Breakthrough is recognizing our innovative approach and success in addressing this challenge.”

The mission of the MedTech Breakthrough Awards is to honor excellence and recognize the innovation, hard work, and success in a range of health and medical technology categories, including Telehealth, Clinical Administration, Patient Engagement, Electronic Health Records (EHR), Virtual Care, Medical Devices, Medical Data, and many more. This year’s program attracted more than 4,000 nominations from over 17 different countries throughout the world.

“Healthy.io’s Minuteful Kidney is a breakthrough solution that is also redefining telehealth, as a bridge for healthcare providers to connect and engage with their patients beyond a video call,” said James Johnson, managing director, MedTech Breakthrough. “The seamless transference between at-home results and healthcare providers—created by Healthy.io’s breakthrough innovators—is vital to today’s digital world, increasing patient engagement for doctors and convenience for patients. We extend our sincerest congratulations to the entire Healthy.io team for a well-deserved 2023 MedTech Breakthrough Award.”

Minuteful Kidney has also transformed medical and clinical testing. Without the hassle of scheduling appointments and accounting for transportation, the clinical-grade medical device has increased accessibility in healthcare deserts, including rural and low-income areas. Lack of transportation bars 3.6 million Americans from receiving the healthcare they need, and at-home test kits like Minuteful Kidney resolve this issue by eliminating the need for transit. By increasing accessibility for patients and providers, Minuteful Kidney raised the percentage of at-risk people who get tested for CKD from 20 percent up to 50 percent, regardless of demographic and socio-economic differences.
