Join Feeding Matters to Celebrate Pediatric Feeding Disorder Awareness Month this May

May is Pediatric Feeding Disorder Awareness Month

“We hope that Pediatric Feeding Disorder Awareness Month inspires more families, members of the medical community, educational institutions, government entities, insurers and the broader community worldwide to ask questions and seek support,” said Jaclyn Pederson, CEO of Feeding Matters.

Adding to their many pioneering efforts, Feeding Matters, is proud to celebrate the 5th annual PFD Awareness month which is recognized around the globe with fourteen officially approved states and counting. The Arizona based nonprofit requested this special designation in 2019 to highlight the medical, emotional, financial, educational and social struggles that families navigating the broad spectrum of pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) face. Arizona Governor, Katie Hobbs, issued a proclamation declaring May 2023 as annual Pediatric Feeding Disorder Awareness Month. View the Governor’s proclamation in full here.

PFD impacts more than one in 37 American children under the age of five annually. This makes PFD more prevalent than well-known childhood conditions such as cerebral palsy and autism. Defined as impaired oral intake that is not age-appropriate and is associated with medical, nutritional, feeding skills, and/or psychosocial dysfunction, PFD is more than a symptom, it is its own condition. Struggling families face many barriers including; a lack of evidence-based data, the diverse and often misunderstood or underserved nature of PFD, grief and pressure when they cannot feed their child. Moreover, they face the challenge of painstaking meal times where every bite, every calorie and every milestone is extremely hard-earned.

In attempt to advocate for these families, Feeding Matters is proud to announce their first annual PFD Awareness Month Campaign: Call it PFD: Feed the Cause, helping individuals educate themselves and others through ample opportunities to get involved:

“There is an undeniable link between heightened awareness of PFD and equitable access to screening, diagnosis, and early intervention that will positively contribute to the health outcomes for thousands of children,” said Jaclyn Pederson, chief executive officer of Feeding Matters. “We hope that Pediatric Feeding Disorder Awareness Month inspires more families, members of the medical community, educational institutions, government entities, insurers and the broader community worldwide to ask questions and seek support,” Pederson concluded.

The simple Feeding Matters Infant and Child Feeding Questionnaire may help target areas of concern for families and physicians. Families, caretakers and members of the medical community are also encouraged to visit: Resources and Support or to join us and attend our virtual International PFD conference, available on-demand through May 31, 2023.

About Feeding Matters

For kids with pediatric feeding disorder (PFD), every bite of food can be painful, scary, or simply impossible to swallow, potentially impeding nutrition, development, growth, and overall well-being. Yet, there is no functional system of care for PFD locally, nationally, or internationally. That’s why Feeding Matters is dedicated to creating a world where children with pediatric feeding disorder will thrive. Established in 2006, Feeding Matters is the first organization in the world uniting the concerns of families with the field’s leading advocates, experts, and allied healthcare professionals to ignite unprecedented change to the system of care through advocacy, education, support, and research – including a stand-alone diagnosis, the International Pediatric Feeding Disorder Conference, and the Infant and Child Feeding Questionnaire. In 2021, Feeding Matters reached nearly 200,000 individuals in 50 states and 143 countries through their programs and website. AHN’s Premier Medical Associates Honored as 2023 Acclaim Award Recipient by American Medical Group Association

News Image

“We are humbled by this honor which stands to accelerate our continuous journey toward providing the best value-based care to the communities we serve.”

The American Medical Group Association (AMGA) has named Allegheny Health Network’s (AHN) Premier Medical Associates (PMA) as this year’s recipient of its Acclaim Award. This is the second time that the physician group, based just outside of Pittsburgh, has received the prestigious award.

As the Acclaim Award recipient, Premier Medical Associates is recognized as the nation’s premier health care delivery organization that has successfully aligned itself with the ‘Quadruple Aim’ – a health care framework which AMGA believes is essential for medical groups and integrated health systems as they move toward value-based care.

The framework encompasses improving the patient experience, improving population health with a focus on quality health outcomes, improving equitable access to care, reducing the per capita cost of health care and emphasizing workplace wellness for health care workers.

“The purpose of the Acclaim Award is to recognize organizations that exemplify the highest ideals of the AMGA model of care,” said Jerry Penso, MD, president and CEO, AMGA. “Premier Medical Associates has aligned their physician workforce within a culture of value-based care and demonstrated remarkable improvements in both patient satisfaction and provider wellness.”

According to AMGA, Premier was recognized for the following initiatives:

  • Developing a strong focus on improving the control of chronic diseases, increasing screening rates and improving immunization rates to reduce the incidence of preventable diseases
  • Creating a patient experience committee and appointing patient experience managers
  • Participating in a Clinically Integrated Network (CIN) that includes provider and hospital participants across three states
  • Attaining level 3 NCQA Patient Centered Medical Home certification continuously since 2013
  • Creating an equity dashboard for colorectal cancer screening rates, hypertension control, diabetes control and more

“The AMGA framework drives all our value-based programs at Premier, and their guidance has greatly assisted us in our quest to develop a sustainable population health model of care,” said Bob Crossey, DO, president of Premier and quality officer at the AHN Primary Care Institute. “As a two-time recipient of the Acclaim Award, we are humbled by this honor which stands to accelerate our continuous journey toward providing the best value-based care to the communities we serve.”

Premier Medical Associates is the largest multi-specialty physician practice in the Greater Pittsburgh area with 100 providers, 22 medical services and specialties delivering care in 10 convenient locations. Premier is headed by a nationally awarded physician and leadership team, representing over 400 employees.

“We congratulate the clinicians and staff at Premier for once again being recognized with this much deserved award. Their unique approach to providing outstanding care in supportive environments for both patients and caregivers has helped set a standard for health care delivery that is emulated across our network,” said Bill Johnjulio, MD, chair, AHN Primary Care Institute.

Aragon Research Releases its Fifth Aragon Research Globe™ for Enterprise Content Platforms, 2023

The Aragon Research Globe for Enterprise Content Platforms, 2023

The Aragon Research Globe for Enterprise Content Platforms, 2023

Business transformation means not standing still in Enterprise Content. Automating content processes can provide a strategic advantage for years to come. – Aragon Research CEO, Jim Lundy

Aragon Research’s latest Globe™ for Enterprise Content Platforms (ECP), 2023 overviews the current state of the ECP market, defines the new shift to content platforms, and evaluates eleven major providers in the enterprise content platform (ECP) space.

Aragon continues to look at the ECP market as one in transition from a focus on managing content to one of automating content; while Aragon Research has stated just last year that enterprises need to review their content and document-related processes, today, in 2023, the priority should be content automation – or simply putting more content into motion to speed up business results.

The ECP market is changing and while managing content is important, we are entering the Content AI era and with that, ECP applications will be capable of doing more than in the past, which means faster time to outcomes.

“Business transformation means not standing still in Enterprise Content. Enterprises need to redefine their business transformation strategies and make adjustments to their providers as needed,” says Aragon Research CEO, Jim Lundy. “Automating Content processes can provide a strategic advantage for years to come.”

The vendors evaluated in this report are:

AODocs, Box, IBM, KnowledgeLake, Laserfiche, M-Files, Microsoft, Newgen, Hyland, OpenText, and Oracle.

The Aragon Research Globe for Enterprise Content Platforms, 2023 serves to help decision-makers differentiate the vendors that offer enterprises the content automation capabilities needed to grow in today’s market.

Novel Genetic Screening Tool Offers Hope for Babies Born With Life-Threatening Metabolic Disorder

Newborn in hospital

“Now that we have shown that our technology can produce accurate results for OTC deficiency, we are applying it to other rare metabolic diseases.” Russell Lo, PNRI Senior Research Project Specialist and study lead author

Every expectant parent hopes to welcome a healthy baby into the world. Unfortunately, infants with some genetic diseases appear healthy at birth, but then rapidly deteriorate—they become lethargic, stop eating, develop seizures, and may progress to coma—symptoms common to a variety of metabolic disorders. For the physicians charged with their care, it is a race against time to determine which disorder is causing their fragile patient to decline.

For these newborns and their families, there is hope in the form of a new technology that can provide physicians with the information they need to rapidly diagnose and treat these patients. PNRI Senior Investigator Aimée Dudley, Ph.D., and her team have developed a powerful set of scientific tools that allows them to predict whether a change in the genetic sequence of a specific gene is likely to cause disease.

A study published today in the American Journal of Human Genetics describes the tools that the Dudley Lab developed to assess the changes in a genetic sequence (variant) associated with ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency (OTC deficiency), a rare, inherited metabolic disorder. OTC deficiency causes ammonia to accumulate to toxic levels in the blood and brain. Infants born with the severest forms of this disease rapidly develop life-threatening symptoms.

“OTC deficiency is a devastating disease, but we have potentially lifesaving treatments. The key is to make the diagnosis and start treatment in time,” said Andrea Gropman, M.D., Division Chief of Neurodevelopmental Pediatrics and Neurogenetics at Children’s National Hospital, Principle Investigator of the Urea Cycle Rare Disease Consortium (UCDC), and co-author of the study. The UCDC is one of 26 rare disease consortia sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. The UCDC network consists of thirteen U.S. and three international sites.

The tools developed came out of the Dudley Lab’s research using yeast cells–the same type of yeast used in baking–to understand the impact of variants in the genes responsible for human metabolism. By testing the impact of over 1,500 variants in the gene associated with OTC deficiency, they were able to determine which variants were likely to cause severe disease and which were not.

“It is now possible to rapidly sequence the genomes of critically ill newborns. But to use this information, we need to be able to associate the genetic variants we find in a patient with the risk of developing a particular disease,” said Nicholas Ah Mew, M.D., Director of the Inherited Metabolic Disorders Program at Children’s National Hospital, Associate Professor of Pediatrics at The George Washington University, and study co-author. “Having this dataset is a big step toward being able to do that for OTC deficiency.”

The next step will be to evaluate the use of this data in real-life settings. The hope is that clinicians will be able to use this information to identify and treat those newborns at the highest risk of developing severe OTC deficiency more rapidly. “This is an excellent example of what can be accomplished by strong partnerships between basic science researchers and clinicians,” said Dr. Aimée Dudley. “We hope that our data will also accelerate the development of new treatments and cures for OTC deficiency.”

“Now that we have shown that our technology can produce accurate results for OTC deficiency, we are applying it to other rare metabolic diseases. We hope to make this type of data available for many more rare diseases,” said Russell Lo, PNRI Senior Research Project Specialist and lead author of the study.

The technology built by the Dudley Lab at PNRI offers hope for a brighter future for infants with life-threatening metabolic diseases.

Illinois-Based Elderwerks Presents Live and Virtual Option Workshop For Caregivers Helping Loved Ones with Dementia; Nonprofit offers Dementia Academy training programs

In addition to monthly webinars and in-person events, the Illinois-based nonprofit Elderwerks offers specific training programs for professionals through its Dementia Academy.

“A majority of our calls are regarding changes in behavior, memory loss, next steps, and those in crisis due to a dementia diagnosis. We want to help people plan for these situations, understand how to engage, and how to cope through the entire process.”

As we age, we tend to forget certain things such as a house key or, perhaps, a phone number. We become more concerned as an older loved one does things that seem out of the ordinary such as having difficulty verbally communicating or losing interest in daily activities, or having an unusual emotional reaction to something mundane.

These could be signs of what is known as dementia. According to the National Institute on Aging, dementia “is the loss of cognitive functioning—thinking, remembering, and reasoning—to such an extent that it interferes with a person’s daily life and activities. Some people with dementia cannot control their emotions, and their personalities may change.” A recent study by Columbia University found that “almost 10% of U.S. adults ages 65 and older have dementia, while another 22% have mild cognitive impairment.”

Elderwerks, a Palatine, Illinois nonprofit offering senior living coordination, advocacy, and education is offering the public and professionals dementia training. From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Thursday, May 11 Elderwerks is offering a live and virtual presentation, “Caregiver Burnout: Caring for a Person Living with Dementia,” by Elderwerks Dementia Reality Master Trainer and Registered Nurse Chris Petrik. The program will cover what causes the stress of caregiving for a person living with dementia, how to identify the signs of strain, and how this situation affects both people from mental and physical standpoints.

“Dementia is a devastating disease that no one should go through alone, as a caregiver or as the person living with the disease,” said Elderwerks President Jennifer Prell. “Dementia education is important for anyone who encounters people with cognitive impairment. A majority of our calls are regarding changes in behavior, memory loss, next steps, and those in crisis due to a dementia diagnosis. We want to help people plan for these situations, understand how to engage, and how to cope through the entire process.”

In addition to monthly webinars and in-person events, Elderwerks offers specific training programs for professionals such as case managers, social workers, and memory support staff at all levels, the knowledge and tools they need through its Dementia Academy. Participants learn about memory loss, effective communication skills, and problem-solving remedies for people who exhibit challenging behavior.

“There has been a very positive response to these programs,” Prell said. “We receive many calls asking when the next dementia class is. They’re typically well attended, and many talk about how they learned a new perspective or new information from the classes.”

Within the Academy is a special program called Dementia Reality®, a collaboration between Elderwerks and CJE Senior Life, a Chicago nonprofit that also helps the needs of older adults. This program combines skills training with real-life obstacles in a virtual world. Master Trainers help participants gain skills training with real-life obstacles in a virtual world. There are classroom group discussions and follow-up periods.

“This program truly gives participants a first-hand experience in how they can help to improve the quality of care for a person living with dementia,” Prell said. “Those who enroll in the program can earn one and one-half hours of continuing education credits per module, 5 modules available. The Dementia Reality training teaches personhood, empathy, safety and understanding, and managing behaviors. Some benefits for clients and residents include better communication, improved behavioral outcomes, and decreased use of psychotropic medications.”
