Dr. Lance Gibbon Recaps Participation in Mount Si Senior Center Gala

Dr. Lance Gibbon recently joined nearly 100 other supporters at the annual Mount Si Senior Center fundraising gala, “Coming Home.” The Mount Si Senior Center is unique in that it provides complete wrap-around services for seniors, including housing, transportation, meals, recreation, and counseling.

“Many seniors are challenged by isolation and mental health issues and struggle with mobility, wellness, and financial insecurity,” Dr. Gibbon said. “What’s heartbreaking is how many older adults don’t have anyone caring or looking out for them. That’s why the services the Center offers are so important.”

The guest list featured volunteers, staff, and community members, including current and former elected officials ranging from mayors to county council members. During the evening, live and silent auctions, raffles, and more helped raise tens of thousands of dollars to support the Senior Center, which has operated since 1977 and serves over 1,200 individuals a year.

A major accomplishment of the Senior Center was the creation in 2003 of its own transportation system, Snoqualmie Valley Transit or SVT. Each year SVT provides more than 40,000 rides for seniors, individuals with disabilities, and the general public.

The Senior Center also operates two apartment complexes with over 60 units combined. Rent is subsidized so that no resident ever pays more than 30% of their monthly income.

Through the Center’s Senior Advocacy program, older adults can access information about benefits and get referrals to services. Affordable fitness classes reduce their chance of injury and increase overall wellness. This is complemented by healthy and delicious meals served five days a week. Participation in social and recreational activities counters the social isolation and loneliness that affects seniors’ mental and physical health.

Dr. Lance Gibbon described the gala as a terrific event for an important cause and was glad that he attended. “As I grow older and help care for aging parents, I think about what they need and what I might need, especially if I didn’t have family around,” he reflected. “Every person needs connection and deserves dignity and respect, and I’m proud to support the Mount Si Senior Center in helping provide that for older adults in our valley.”

News Image

The contest is open to all people in the United States who have been diagnosed with kidney disease, have had a kidney transplant, or are on dialysis.

Lori Hartwell, founder and president of RSN, says, “One of the strategies I use to cope with challenges is to engage in the creative process. When I am involved in doing something creative, or even when I watch someone who is involved, I feel relaxed. It helps me live in the moment.”

Renal Support Network (RSN) is pleased to announce the theme of its 21st annual essay contest. This year, it’s all about creativity, and writers are asked to address the following question: “How do you use your creativity to help cope with kidney disease?” The contest is open to all people in the United States who have been diagnosed with kidney disease, have had a kidney transplant, or are on dialysis.

RSN’s Essay Contest was originally established in 2002. Since then, thousands of essays have been submitted by people living with CKD. The contest gives those who live with chronic kidney disease (CKD) the opportunity to tell their story.

Lori Hartwell, founder and president of RSN, says, “When our kidneys fail, we must embrace a new life and learn to live with the challenges we face every day. As individuals with a chronic disease, how do we deal with the bumps in the road that seem to continually appear before us? One of the strategies I use to cope with those challenges is to engage in the creative process. When I am involved in doing something creative, or even when I watch someone who is involved, I feel relaxed. It helps me live in the moment.”

Contest winners receive cash prizes: First Place, $500; Second Place, $300; and Third Place, $100. For submissions to be accepted, they must be typed and not exceed 750 words. The submission deadline is August 10, 2023. Winners will be announced the week of September 24, 2023. Accelerate Novel Antibody Discovery with Antigen-Specific B Cell Isolation, Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

Join this webinar to learn about the benefits of this approach for: Expansion and activation of memory B cells.

Since the first therapeutic monoclonal antibody was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1986, the field of antibody therapy development has increased, yet it continues to face many challenges. The scarcity of antigen-specific B cells is one of the hurdles scientists face early-on when developing a monoclonal antibody to treat cancer, autoimmune disease or infection. In this webinar, learn about enhancing antibody discovery with novel strategies — such as the one developed by Single Cell Technology — that enable the accelerated generation of neutralizing monoclonal antibodies from influenza-vaccinated individuals.

Join this webinar to learn about the benefits of this approach for: Expansion and activation of memory B cells; Isolation of antigen-specific memory B cells from vaccinated individuals with faster, gentler and safer microchip-based cell sorting; Capture and sequencing of antigen-specific antibodies using a novel platform for antibody discovery that uses next-gen sequencing technology; And creation, expression and cross-reactivity testing of recombinant antibodies.

Join Chun-Nan Chen, Chief Executive Officer, Single Cell Technology; Allison Schulkins, Chief Operating Officer, Single Cell Technology; and Crystal Montoya, Senior Marketing Product Manager, Miltenyi Biotec, for the live webinar on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at 3pm EDT (12pm PDT).

EY Announces Drs. Stephanie and Eric Venn-Watson as Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2023 Pacific Southwest Award Finalists

News Image

Ernst & Young LLP (EY US) has named Drs. Stephanie and Eric Venn-Watson, the founders of Seraphina Therapeutics, as finalists for the Entrepreneur Of The Year® 2023 Pacific Southwest Award. This prestigious award recognizes transformative entrepreneurs and leaders of high-growth companies who are building a more equitable, sustainable, and prosperous world for all.

Drs. Stephanie and Eric Venn-Watson are being recognized for their groundbreaking discovery of C15:0 (pentadecanoic acid) as an essential fatty acid that has largely disappeared from the modern Western diet, and bringing it to market as a food fortifier and pure C15:0 nutritional supplement called fatty15.

Voluminous research supports that C15:0 has a positive impact on overall health. Today, it is hypothesized that C15:0 nutritional deficiencies are driving the rise in chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and certain types of cancer. The Venn-Watsons are on a mission to help restore populationwide C15:0 levels and stem multiple chronic conditions.

“We are thrilled to be named as finalists for this prestigious award,” said Dr. Eric Venn-Watson. “Our passion for improving global health has driven us to explore new frontiers in nutrition and we are honored to have our work recognized by Ernst & Young.”

Since their initial discovery, C15:0 research has bloomed across the world. A meta-analysis co–authored by Harvard Medical School found that people with higher C15:0 levels have a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This protective effect is believed to be due to C15:0’s ability to improve glucose control and insulin sensitivity.

In addition to its potential for reducing the risk of diabetes, C15:0 has also been shown to have anti-cancer properties. Among numerous studies demonstrating C15:0’s direct anti-cancer effects, C15:0 also improved upon gemcitabine’s efficacy in stopping the growth of human breast, liver, lung, and pancreatic cancer cell lines. A recent meta-analysis concluded that only C15:0 (not omega 3 or other fatty acids) is associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer.

Another meta-analysis, led by co-authors from Harvard University, found that people with higher C15:0 levels are less likely to develop heart disease. This benefit may be due to C15:0’s broad anti-inflammatory activities, as well as its demonstrated ability to lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in relevant models.

Given the volume of research around the significant health benefits associated with C15:0, the discovery of C15:0 as an essential fatty acid has the potential to lead to new insights into the role of nutrition in preventing and treating chronic diseases, and could ultimately help to improve public health on a global scale.
