Physicians for Informed Consent Submits Amicus Brief to U.S. Supreme Court in Pivotal Vaccine Mandates Case

[ad_1]

Figure 1. Number of Fully Vaccinated Persons with COVID-19 in Cape Cod July 2021 Outbreak

…unvaccinated persons previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 are 99.9% protected from reinfection, and approximately 180 million Americans have already been infected.

Physicians for Informed Consent (PIC), an educational nonprofit organization focused on science and statistics, filed an amicus brief in support of plaintiff college students who are declining COVID-19 vaccination at Indiana University (i.e., the case of Ryan Klaassen, et al. v. Trustees of Indiana University).

Indiana University recently mandated COVID-19 vaccination for college students. While the college does offer a religious exemption, the college is still requiring unvaccinated students to wear masks and engage in frequent SARS-CoV-2 testing, even if the student proves natural immunity. The plaintiff students brought suit in Federal Court in Indiana (1:21-CV-238 DRL) requesting an emergency injunction because they claim the mandate is unscientific and unconstitutional, and believe government-funded institutions should not be discriminating between citizens based on vaccination status. The trial court denied the request for emergency relief. The plaintiffs then appealed to the 7th Circuit Federal Appeals Court (Case No. 21-2326), which denied the appeal. Plaintiffs have now appealed further to the US Supreme Court (Case Number: 21A15). Per Greg Glaser, PIC General Counsel, “If the Supreme Court is willing to hear the case, it will be particularly significant to instruct courts on how to analyze vaccine cases in the modern day. If the Supreme Court applies ‘strict scrutiny,’ the likely outcome is that unvaccinated students cannot be segregated and discriminated against. But if the Supreme Court applies ‘rational basis scrutiny,’ then the likely outcome is that Indiana University will be allowed to continue its segregation policy. PIC advocates for informed consent as a fundamental right, and therefore strict scrutiny.”

The amicus highlights a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report from a July 2021 outbreak in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where 469 COVID-19 cases were identified among residents who had traveled to the town and 346 (74%) occurred in fully vaccinated persons. Of the five hospitalized cases, four were fully vaccinated. The CDC stated, “Cycle threshold values were similar among specimens from patients who were fully vaccinated and those who were not,” which means both vaccinated and unvaccinated persons can equally spread SARS-CoV-2 if infected, and there is no scientific basis for discrimination based on vaccination status. Per the CDC, “…preliminary evidence suggests that fully vaccinated people who do become infected with the Delta variant can spread the virus to others.”

“Additional data in the amicus brief illustrates that unvaccinated persons previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 are 99.9% protected from reinfection, and approximately 180 million Americans have already been infected. Restricting people’s life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness based on vaccination status is both unscientific and unethical, and should not be possible for government-funded institutions in the United States,” said Dr. Shira Miller, PIC founder and president.

Physicians for Informed Consent’s body of physicians, scientists, statisticians and healthcare workers is trusted by both patients and practitioners for providing scientific data on infectious diseases and vaccines. To learn more, read PIC’s amicus brief.

Global Standards Organizations Collaborate On Governance and Interoperability Standards for the Spatial Web

[ad_1]

ieee-swf-logos

IEEE + SWF

We are excited to work together with the IEEE and its members to advance the mission of global standards for the Spatial Web, upon which the next generation of applications will be built.

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity, has collaborated with the Spatial Web Foundation (SWF), the principal international standards organization responsible for developing and promoting ethically aligned technical standards for the next era of global network computing aka the “Spatial Web.”

The Spatial Web incorporates technologies that enable future Smart Cities and Virtual Worlds colloquially known as the Metaverse. It is a hyper-connected, contextually-aware, network of humans, machines, and AI that integrates exponentially powerful technologies such as IoT (internet of things), ML (machine learning), XR (extended reality, aka MR/AR/VR), Autonomous Vehicles, Drones and Robots, Distributed Ledgers (cryptographic) and Edge Computing (edge) into a unified cyber-physical network. As billions of connected devices and services come online, collectively sensing, navigating, and performing physical activities in the world, machine-readable governance of data (policies, permissions, and rights management) is critical to aligning these powerful and pervasive technologies with a 21st Century society’s ethical and environmental needs.

The launch of this working group marks the public commitment of the two most significant standards organizations towards the development of a 21st-century “cyber-physical” Spatial Web. The need for a new generation of open standards that drive technical interoperability and innovation, and also promote human and environmental well-being is increasingly apparent.

“We are excited to work together with the IEEE and its members to advance the mission of global standards for the Spatial Web, upon which the next generation of applications will be built,” says Gabriel René, Executive Director of Spatial Web Foundation. “While we are initially focused on the core standards, given the broad applicability of Spatial Web Standards, we anticipate a family of standards, whose working groups can individually address technology-oriented standards — for, AI, autonomous vehicles, IoT and robotics, 5G, augmented and virtual reality — as well as industry-specific standards for government, supply chain, manufacturing, climate, healthcare, and smart cities.”

After years of research and development, the Spatial Web Foundation presented its overview of initial draft specifications at the official launch of The Spatial Web Protocol, Architecture and Governance Working Group (IEEE P2874 Standard) on July 21st, 2021, a dynamic collective that includes members from academia, government, and business leaders across a wide spectrum of industries. The Foundation is contributing its specifications for a Hyperspatial Domains, Hyperspatial Transaction Protocol (HSTP) and Hyperspatial Modeling Language (HSML) capable of enabling and governing context-aware collaborative computing that ensures data provenance, data lineage, and data interoperability across connected hardware (e.g. autonomous vehicles, sensors, smart devices, robots) and software (e.g. services, platforms, applications, artificial intelligence systems). The specifications will also include mechanisms for quantifying and credentialing context-specific levels of trust, interoperability, privacy, and security required for both virtual and digitally-mediated physical activities.

The launch of the standards development group represents an opportunity to “reimagine the future”. And as such, it is crucial that it incorporates the input and perspective from stakeholders across the globe, including privacy advocates, technology ethicists, scientists, climate researchers, and policy-makers, and social justice experts as well as device manufacturers, software developers, system integrators, telecoms, semiconductor manufacturers and cybersecurity experts all of whom are encouraged to participate.

The mission of the Spatial Web Working Group is to further develop the specifications to meet the rigorous requirement to become globally adopted IEEE standards, with a specific emphasis on the incorporation of foundational ethics and values as informed by IEEE’s Ethically-Aligned Design P7000 Series of standards that provide guidance for the support of human rights, well-being, accountability, and transparency for AI and Autonomous Intelligent Systems which the Spatial Web standards intend to further incorporate and advance. This is a unique and historic opportunity to participate in what may be considered a public imperative. The working group is open to individuals that would like to participate in this mission. Details about the working group can be found at the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA) site: https://standards.ieee.org/project/2874.html

About IEEE

IEEE and its members inspire a global community to innovate for a better tomorrow through highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational activities. IEEE is the trusted “voice” for engineering, computing, and technology information around the globe. https://www.ieee.org/

Fannin Innovation Studio Awarded $2,000,000 NIH Grant for Development of a Novel Antivenom Therapeutic Based on Next-Generation Aptamers

[ad_1]

Fannin Innovation Studio announces it has been awarded a $2,000,000 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II grant from the Office of Research Infrastructure Programs, National Institutes of Health (NIH) for development of a novel RaptamerTM-based antivenom, in partnership with Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

Snake bite envenomation is a significant problem in the United States (U.S.) and worldwide that can result in substantial morbidity and even death. Each year, approximately 8,000 people in the U.S. are bitten by venomous snakes. Snake venom contains a complex mixture of toxins that can produce hemorrhage or cause tissue damage resulting in permanent disability, limb amputation or death. Current antivenom products, which consist of serum-based antibody fragments raised in horses or sheep, are generally effective at stabilizing envenomation patients, but they come with several limitations. They are not effective in mitigating tissue damage from all venomous snakes in the U.S., and they often lead to adverse effects such as serum sickness, hypersensitivity, and recurrent coagulopathy.

“We are delighted to have received this award to develop a new antivenom therapeutic. Our Raptamer-based antivenom is expected to have several advantages over the traditional antivenoms on the market. In addition, a Raptamer therapeutic ‘cocktail’ would have an enhanced safety profile, a longer shelf-life, and faster production,” said Dr. Atul Varadhachary, Principal Investigator on the grant and Managing Partner at Fannin Innovation Studio.

Fannin will develop its novel antivenom therapeutic using RaptamersTM, Fannin’s proprietary next-generation DNA aptamers. Raptamers incorporate specialized protein-like modifications within the DNA aptamer strand, providing for higher affinity and more specific target binding. The proprietary RaptamerTM platform was developed by Raptamer Discovery Group (formerly AM Biotechnologies), which Fannin acquired in 2019. The Raptamer-based antivenom formulation will be designed to neutralize the major toxin classes of venomous snakes found in the U.S., which would provide a safe and consistent emergency treatment for venomous snake bites. Fannin will collaborate on this project with Dr. Elda E. Sánchez, Director of the National Natural Toxins Research Center at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, and President of the North American Society of Toxinology.

“Having a Raptamer-based antivenom, as proposed in our project, would be of enormous benefit,” said Dr. Sánchez. “With support from DARPA, we successfully developed a Raptamer that provided in-vivo protection against a small molecular weight toxin from rattlesnake venom, crotamine (myotoxin). This is significant since conventional antivenoms have difficulty in neutralizing this specific toxin due to its non-immunogenicity characteristic. I look forward to expanding this work to develop a Raptamer cocktail to simultaneously target multiple toxins from various snake species. Such a formulation would help reduce the morbidity associated with snake envenomation and address the limitations of current treatment methods,” she said.

Funding from this NIH SBIR Phase II grant will enable Fannin to develop a Raptamer-based antivenom cocktail that it plans to advance into clinical trials. “The goal of this project is to address an unmet medical need in the treatment of snake envenomation in the U.S. with planned expansion into other major markets in regions with high incidences of snake envenomation such as South America, Southeast Asia and Australia,” said Leo Linbeck III, Founder and Chairman of Fannin Innovation Studio. “The aptamer-antivenom can also be tailored to meet the needs of individual regions with different populations of venomous snakes.”

Kokomo24/7 Safety Cloud

With the rise of the Delta variant and the urgency to resume in-person education, it is a critical time for school campuses to have proper vaccine data management tools in place

As hundreds of US college campuses work around the clock to prepare resuming in-person classes and operations, Kokomo Solutions, Inc., the leading provider of health and safety management tools to educational institutions and public sector organizations, had launched VaxTrax™ to help address the needs and concerns of vaccine management on campus.

Part of the Kokomo24/7® Safety Cloud™, VaxTrax™ serves as a tool for accurate and secure vaccination data collection and management, as well as verification and digital proof accessibility. It allows an institution to efficiently compile and manage all vaccine information belonging to students, staff, and faculty. The process from uploading vaccine information to receiving a verified, digital vaccine card is quick and seamless.

“With the rise of the Delta variant and the urgency to resume in-person education, it is a critical time for school campuses to have proper vaccine data management tools in place,” says Daniel Lee, Chief Executive Office of Kokomo Solutions, Inc. “The solutions from the Kokomo24/7® Safety Cloud™, in particular VaxTrax™, have proven to efficiently and effectively help institutions of any size to navigate the pandemic and their on-going health and safety needs.”

Vaccine requirements are nothing new to educational institutions. Most already require on-campus students to be vaccinated against viral diseases like measles, mumps, and rubella. Recent case rulings are now allowing more states to impose vaccine mandates, and as a result more colleges now are making the COVID-19 vaccine a requirement.

At present, nearly 1 million users have utilized one of the many health and safety features of the Kokomo24/7® Safety Cloud™. With school safety being an important focus, Kokomo Solutions, Inc. has been working with educational institutions all across the country of varying sizes and needs, including The University of Michigan, Hartford Public Schools, and entire districts such as the Los Angeles Unified School District.

“A critical turning point in this pandemic is how schools manage their student population this fall term,” explains Sa Dao, Vice President of Kokomo Solutions, Inc. “The recent up-tick in COVID-19 cases, despite rising vaccinations, show that we must remain committed and vigilant in doing everything we can to keep the health and safety of our students a top priority.”
