As ICAA Celebrates 20th Anniversary, It Envisions a Future Defined by Aging Well

[ad_1]

Colin Milner

Our vision for the future focuses on the concept of healthspan – which emphasizes not only living longer, but also living better

Widely regarded as ahead of its time, the forward-thinking International Council of Active Aging® (ICAA) founded the active-aging industry on October 1, 2001 to fundamentally change the way we age by proactively engaging older adults to live their best life.

With 10,000 members that own or operate 40,000 wellness locations in 47 countries, the organization today is a powerful influencer across global, governmental and local levels throughout multiple countries, sectors and organizations.

“On our 20th anniversary as the voice and centerpiece of the active-aging industry, we reflect on our tremendous progress in uniting the formerly disparate group of professionals that serve the older adult community,” says Colin Milner, CEO of ICAA. “Our vision for the future focuses on the concept of healthspan – which emphasizes not only living longer, but also living better.”

According to “The Four Pillars of the New Retirement: What a Difference a Year Makes,” a June 2021 report by Age Wave and Edward Jones, full life expectancy includes two components: a healthy lifespan – the years lived in full health and free of disability – followed by approximately 12.4 years of expected poor health.

Expanding the healthy lifespan, or healthspan, not only improves individual quality of life and productivity, but also benefits society and grows the active-aging industry, which includes senior living communities, senior centers, health clubs, rehabilitation centers and aging organizations.

Wellness is the way

The critical foundation to increasing heathspan involves fully embracing wellness, which includes seven dimensions: emotional, intellectual, physical, social, spiritual, vocational and environmental.

To support the industry, ICAA produces a wide variety of resources that promote aging well, such as proprietary research to inform the industry about best practices, trends and the current state of affairs. In fact, ICAA research findings have supported a financial return on wellness and a trend toward shifting from care communities that include wellness to wellness-based communities that offer care.

ICAA also leads executive think thanks that serve as expert counsel and guide rods to create solutions and drive the industry forward. And the organization’s conferences, initiatives and publications further facilitate collaboration, awareness and progress.

Furthermore, online education with certificate courses, virtual summits and webinars equips professionals in the retirement, assisted living, rehabilitation, fitness and wellness fields to foster thriving communities. Currently, ICAA is expanding its education arm to enhance offerings on what wellness is and how to build a wellness culture.

As the go-to source on active aging, ICAA works with the U.S. Administration on Aging, the National Institute on Aging, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the White House Conference on Aging, the Canadian Special Senate Committee on Aging, the European Commission and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Great expectations

Milner is enthusiastic about the next 20 years, as key trends are converging that support the expansion of healthspan. Among them: a growing health data economy, inclusive living models such as intergenerational communities and multigenerational housing, communities integrating into the larger society and more.

“The future is about building an even more robust foundation for wellness, continuing to drive change, and equipping organizations that serve older adults,” Milner notes. “Our vision is to create a world of healthier older people that are alive with purpose, inspired to live a rich quality of life and able to enjoy a fulfilled life.”

About the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA)

http://www.icaa.cc

ICAA is a professional association that leads, connects and defines the active-aging industry and supports professionals who aspire to develop wellness cultures for adults over 50. This support includes creating wellness environments, programs and services. The association is focused on active aging—an approach to aging that helps older adults live life as fully as possible within all dimensions of wellness—and provides its members with education, information, resources and tools. As an active-aging educator and advocate, ICAA has advised numerous organizations and governmental bodies.

[ad_1]

All Calm Strips orders during the month of October will include the special TLC symbol Calm Strip, along with an information card about body-focused repetitive behaviors.

Raising awareness and support for people experiencing body-focused behaviors is personally important to me.

In partnership with the TLC Foundation for Body-focused Repetitive Behaviors, Calm Strips has developed the first-ever square shaped textured sensory adhesive to support BFRB (Body-focused Repetitive Behavior) Awareness Week 2021, October 1-7, 2021.

The reusable, residue-free adhesive highlights the TLC Foundation’s symbol, which is a stylized representation of repetitive behavior. The TLC Foundation’s symbol is intended to evoke feelings of inclusion, safety, security, support, healing, and connection – reminding individuals experiencing BFRBs that they are not alone.

“We are incredibly grateful to Calm Strips for their support of the 1-in-20 individuals diagnosed with a body-focused repetitive behavior, and the people who love and support them,” said Jen Monteleone, interim executive director of the TLC Foundation for BFRBs. “It’s our goal through BFRB Awareness Week to break down myths and misperception about BFRBs, that often leads to isolation and shame.”

In honor of BFRB Awareness Week, sales that use the code TLCBFRB20 from October 1-8, 2021 will receive a 20 percent discount with 10 percent of those sales donated back to the TLC Foundation for Body-focused Repetitive Behaviors.

“Raising awareness and support for people experiencing body-focused behaviors is personally important to me,” said Michael Malkin, creator and founder of Calm Strips. “We’re proud to be a part of an important week that celebrates this resilient community.”

Mount Sinai’s Arnhold Institute for Global Health and NYC Health + Hospitals Announce Inaugural Winners of CURE-19 Research Grants and Pilot Projects

[ad_1]

News Image

“We are excited to fund the first cohort of research studies under the CURE-19 collaboration with NYC Health + Hospitals,” said Dennis S. Charney, MD, the Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean of Icahn Mount Sinai and President for Academic Affairs of the Mount Sinai Health System.

The Arnhold Institute for Global Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and NYC Health + Hospitals today announced the four inaugural grant awardees of the CURE-19 Research Pilot Projects, an initiative to support collaborative, interdisciplinary COVID-19 research to better understand the novel virus that has transformed health care globally. Each winner will receive $25,000 to support their research project thanks to funding by Icahn Mount Sinai.

The CURE-19 Research Pilot Projects will support new COVID-19 research over the next five years, with an emphasis on projects related to disease control for large communities, informatics and decision support systems, addressing structural racism and social determinants of health, translational science research, and evidence-based interventions and policies. The projects will also address the long-term effects of COVID-19, social and environmental determinants of COVID-19, and maternal and child health related to COVID-19.

“Elmhurst is thrilled to collaborate with our colleagues at Mount Sinai to further understand the relationship between COVID-19 and community, clinical, and socio-economic variables,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst CEO Helen Arteaga Landaverde, MPH. “We saw first-hand how terribly impacted our precious community was in the early days and weeks of the pandemic. However, that impact will have lasting effects for decades and generations to come. It is critical, as community health care providers, to thoroughly understand these impacts and better adapt our care and support services to those needs.”

“Congratulations to the four inaugural grant awardees of the CURE-19 Research Pilot Projects,” said NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens CEO Neil J. Moore, MBA, MPA, FACHE. “By partnering with our neighboring health institutions, our experts will be able to collect larger samples of information to draw stronger conclusions and correlations that will ultimately help address health needs in these communities, now and in the future.”

“The pandemic has disproportionately affected vulnerable populations. We must understand the systemic issues in order to address inequities in medicine and provide equitable care that improves health outcomes and enhances pandemic preparedness and response initiatives.”

The inaugural research grant winners and their projects include:

1. Environmental Impact on Outcomes: Saadiyah Bilal, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Icahn Mount Sinai, will examine the relationship between neighborhood-level community variables with clinical outcomes and vaccination rates for patients with COVID-19.

2. Community Health Care Workers: Stanley Pierre, MD, MPA, Patient Safety Coordinator and Director of the Clinical Centers of Excellence Development Program, NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens, will examine how community health care workers can promote equity in vaccine access and trust to historically marginalized and vulnerable communities.

3. Maternal COVID-19 Vaccination: Uday Patil, MD, Director of Neonatology and Newborn Services at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, and Global Health and Health Systems Design, at Icahn Mount Sinai, will examine the transfer of passive immunity against COVID-19 to newborns after vaccination of mothers in diverse, multiethnic communities that are often underserved and underrepresented.

4. Opioid Overdose During Pandemic: Siri Shastry, MD, MS, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Icahn Mount Sinai, will examine the impact of COVID-19 on risk behaviors of patients with non-fatal opioid overdose in the Emergency Department, while understanding the influence of structural, community, and network factors.

The four inaugural research grant winners were required to submit a proposal that included a project summary or abstract, research description that emphasized its focus and significance, proposed timeline, list of principal and co-principal investigators, and more. The proposals were reviewed by a committee of research leaders from the CURE-19 partner institutions, who scored them on criteria including overall impact, significance, innovation, and approach.

The research pilot projects are part of a larger partnership known as the COVID-19 Unit for Research at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst and /Queens (CURE-19), a collaboration between Mount Sinai’s Arnhold Institute for Global Health and NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst Global Health Institute that formed during the initial peak of the pandemic in 2020. CURE-19 translates data, experiences, and lessons from clinicians at the Mount Sinai Health System, NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst, and NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens into research to address both the global pandemic and root causes of health disparities in New York City.

Newsweek Ranks The Mount Sinai Hospital No. 1 in New York for Specialty Care

[ad_1]

“We are extremely proud of our outstanding medical teams that make this award possible,” – Kenneth Davis, MD, Chief Executive Officer of Mount Sinai Health System

The Mount Sinai Hospital has been named the No. 1 specialty hospital in New York State and one of the top 5 medical centers in the world for gastroenterology, cardiology, and cardiac surgery in Newsweek’s “World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2022” list.

The annual list ranks the top 250 hospitals for cardiology and oncology, the top 150 for cardiac surgery and pediatrics, and the top 125 each in endocrinology, gastroenterology, orthopedics, neurology, neurosurgery, and pulmonology. The Mount Sinai Hospital received top honors in 10 specialties overall and for the first year, Mount Sinai Beth Israel was recognized in five specialties.

This is the second year in a row that The Mount Sinai Hospital was assessed in Newsweek’s annual medical specialty survey and ranked among the top in the world in the following disciplines: gastroenterology (No. 3 worldwide), cardiology (No. 4), cardiac surgery (No. 4), pulmonology (No. 6), neurosurgery (No. 8), neurology (No. 11), oncology (No. 22), pediatrics (No. 23), orthopedics (No. 25), and endocrinology (No. 29). Mount Sinai Beth Israel was ranked worldwide in the following specialties: orthopedics (No. 86), neurosurgery (No. 88), pediatrics (No. 101), neurology (No. 112), and oncology (No. 178).

“We are extremely proud of our outstanding medical teams that make this award possible,” said Kenneth L. Davis, MD, Chief Executive Officer of Mount Sinai Health System. “To receive this distinction by a global audience is a great honor. This ranking reflects a commitment to providing equitable, high-quality care to our patients and underscores Mount Sinai’s relentless pursuit of knowledge, understanding, and answers to the world’s most complex health problems. We do this in service of each patient and family we treat and care for, as well as the millions of families and communities around the globe through research collaborations that advance understanding of health and the human condition.”

“This honor is a testament to the compassion and dedication of our entire staff, who work tirelessly to deliver exceptional care to our patients. I am deeply proud of every member of our community. From our operations and support teams to our physicians and nurses, everyone has made this global recognition possible,” says David L. Reich, MD, President and Chief Operating Officer of The Mount Sinai Hospital. “This has been a challenging year for our community, but our team continues to respond by making world-leading advances in science that improved clinical care.”

“The dedication and compassion of our expert clinicians is inspiring and reinforces our commitment to the community that we are proud to serve,” said Jeremy Boal, MD, President of Mount Sinai Beth Israel and Downtown, and Chief Clinical Officer of Mount Sinai Health System. “I am so grateful to the many teams and individuals who all play a part in the care provided to our patients, and make this honor possible.”

According to Newsweek, these rankings are provided to help patients and their loved ones “know which hospitals or state-of-the-art facilities have the most accomplished physicians and offer the highest level of care.” Developed in partnership with global data research firm Statista Inc., Newsweek invited over 40,000 medical experts (medical doctors, health care professionals, hospital managers, and directors) in more than 20 countries to an online survey. Participants were asked to recommend and rank hospitals based on their expertise in one primary medical field and were able to choose an optional secondary area of expertise. Results were compiled, weighted, ranked, and then validated by an international board of experts.

The Mount Sinai Hospital is the flagship hospital of the Mount Sinai Health System, one of the nation’s leading health care systems, comprising eight hospitals, an award-winning medical and graduate school, and a large network of ambulatory centers and practices. Mount Sinai Beth Israel is notable for its unique approach to combining medical excellence with clinical innovation and has advanced our commitment to community-based ambulatory care and expanding patient access to primary and specialty care.

Small Software Company in Texas Refuses to Outsource Customer Service

[ad_1]

News Image

“Our support and implementation are delivered by experts with over 275 years of experience in long-term care,” said Cassie Poier, the client services manager at Experience Care. “And they either deliver the answer themselves or work their contacts internally until one is found.”

A new report reveals that the business process outsourcing market size is expected to hit $405.8 billion by 2028. One provider of software to nursing homes, Experience Care, hopes to buck that trend in refusing to outsource its customer service.

Research shows that outsourcing jobs leads to both a decline in job quality and lower wages for Americans. And yet, more than two-thirds of businesses are doing so in order to help with the bottom line.

One small company, however, refuses to give in and employ foreigners who are willing to work for lower wages. “We’ve built meaningful relationships with our clients over the course of our 52-year history,” said Jason Long, the CEO of Texas-based Experience Care (http://www.experience.care). “And we know that our customer service is at the heart of who we are, not as a business but what I would call ‘a community’.”

Experience Care has dedicated client service representatives located throughout the U.S. working in all time zones, which means customers can speak to a real person from 5 A.M. Eastern to 8 P.M. Eastern. “Our support and implementation are delivered by experts with over 275 years of experience in long-term care,” said Cassie Poier, the client services manager at Experience Care. “And they either deliver the answer themselves or work their contacts internally until one is found.” Last summer, Experience Care added two clinical implementation and support specialists with over 20 years of experience in long-term care to its customer service team.

The long-term care EHR vendor knows that its users are faced with pressing concerns every day, as nursing homes must overcome COVID-19 outbreaks, staffing issues, and plummeting census numbers. It is for this reason that they are quick to respond to issues. “Our average response time for 2021 is 54 minutes,” said Poier. “Our service level agreement is 60 minutes for critical issues, under four hours for high priority issues, six to eight hours for medium priority, and by the next business day for low priority. And we hit those numbers one hundred percent of the time.” She added that the company has a log that is checked nightly to ensure all voicemails and emails are documented.

This quick turnaround stands in stark contrast to the response times of larger EHR providers, which may take days to respond or reserve customer support for clients who pay for the privilege to be in higher tiers. “If you don’t pay for the upper-tier you never hear back,” Poier said of some of Experience Care’s competitors. “But we don’t have tiered support here.
