American Osteopathic Foundation Receives $1 Million from Dr. Jeffrey Grove for LGBTQIA+ Health Equity and Inclusion Initiative

“I am heartened to support LGBTQIA+ Osteopathic medical students in their journey of growth and acceptance. Ultimately, better patient care starts with physicians who are better supported in the pathway through medical school.”- Jeffrey Grove, DO

A one-million-dollar donation is being gifted to the American Osteopathic Foundation by Jeffrey S. Grove, DO, an Osteopathic family physician and president of the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) Board of Directors. Dr. Grove made this generous commitment to help the AOF launch an LGBTQIA+ initiative that addresses the profession at three levels, as medical students, as practicing physicians, and as educators within the healthcare field. Dr. Grove’s contribution is earmarked for educational scholarships to Osteopathic medical students who self-identify as a member of an LGBTQIA+ community.

“Giving back to the profession I love is something that I do without reservation,” said Dr. Grove. “I am heartened to support LGBTQIA+ Osteopathic medical students in their journey of growth and acceptance. Ultimately, better patient care starts with physicians who are better supported in the pathway through medical school.”

Reimagining the future of healthcare

Dr. Grove is the founder and inspiration behind several other LGBTQIA+ expansion initiatives across the country. His gift will anchor the AOF’s recently launched LGBTQIA+ Health Equity & Inclusion Initiative, which aims to better understand and address the healthcare needs of the LGBTQIA+ community through educational scholarships, CME training, and diversity-enriching programs.

“The Foundation is humbled by Dr. Grove’s generosity,” said Rita Forden, AOF CEO. “His gift to support AOF’s broad-based initiative moves us closer to a world without discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.”

The AOF launched the LGBTQIA+ Health Equity and Inclusion Initiative in 2021 to undertake the work of better understanding and addressing the healthcare needs of the LGBTQIA+ community. LGBTQIA+ medical students lack visibility and access to the support services available to other minority status groups, according to recent research in the Journal of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Grove is a graduate of Florida Southern College and earned his Osteopathic degree from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine (SECOM). He served both his internship and residency at the Sun Coast Hospital in Largo, and then joined Suncoast Family Medical Associates, where he currently practices. He also serves as president and CEO of Paxton Medical Management, a physician-led organization providing expert healthcare through an integrated system of tools and services connecting physicians and patients.

“I’m thrilled to work with the American Osteopathic Foundation to deliver on a long-held dream of mine,” said Dr. Grove. “Together, we have the power to facilitate change, improve outcomes for LGBTQIA+ medical students, and to create safer, more welcoming space for patients.”

About the American Osteopathic Foundation

Since 1949, the American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) has supported research, programs, and services that promote Osteopathic medicine and enhance patient-centered care. As a leading, national nonprofit foundation, the AOF provides grants, scholarships, and awards to Osteopathic medical students, residents, fellows, Osteopathic physicians (DOs), researchers, and educators. Guided by its deep knowledge of the field, AOF funds, leads, convenes and collaborates with health care professionals across the country to address the Osteopathic profession. Along with the generosity of donors and the strength and vision of its many partners, the AOF continues to advance the Osteopathic profession, making a positive, impactful difference in the communities it serves —locally, nationally, and across the globe.

Alpha Lab Health Announces Second Cohort of Startups Accepted to Life Science Accelerator

[ad_1]

“AlphaLab Health wraps entrepreneurs with a network of clinical and business experts who know how to help them succeed in the complex health care system,” said Megan Shaw, managing director for life sciences at Innovation Works.

Healthcare and life sciences accelerator AlphaLab Health today announced the second cohort of start-up companies to participate in their program. The companies were competitively selected to participate in a six-month program that will help them navigate key risk points in the clinical and commercial development of their companies. The companies also receive up to $100,000 in pre-seed investment. This cohort features a wide range of companies covering diagnostics, therapeutics, medical device, healthcare IT and packaging solutions.

“Parcel Health is really excited to work with AlphaLab Health,” said Melinda Su-En Lee Co-Founder & CEO of Parcel Health. “We’ve already received amazing mentorship and feedback and spoken with important health system stakeholders in the weeks before officially starting in Cohort 2. We’re excited to grow and scale our sustainable packaging company with the strategic support and resources at AlphaLab Health.”

AlphaLab Health is one part of the Pittsburgh life sciences and biotech ecosystem that has recently been recognized as one of the top emerging innovation clusters in the world. Several of the companies from the first cohort, which completed in June, have already surpassed their respective goals for follow-on funding and met other milestones of growth. The program is run out of a former hospital campus owned by Allegheny Health Network (AHN) in Bellevue that has been repurposed to support innovation and community health.

“AlphaLab Health wraps entrepreneurs with a network of clinical and business experts who know how to help them succeed in the complex health care system,” said Megan Shaw, managing director for life sciences at Innovation Works. “The program brings together all the strengths of IW and AHN and then adds in mentors, access to customers, clinicians with deep experience and domain knowledge, and other resources that can help these talented founders leapfrog past the challenges they would otherwise face,” Shaw continued.

A brief synopsis of the companies in the new cohort is provided below.

Introducing the 2021-2022 Alpha Lab Health Cohort

  • MindTrace is developing technology that allows neurosurgeons to remove brain tumors and seizure-generating tissue, while ensuring each patient leaves the hospital the same person they were when they arrived, preserving personality and skills.
  • Parcel Health creates innovative and sustainable medication packaging. More than eight billion plastic prescription bottles are used annually in the United States, most ending up in landfills. Parcel Health provides eco-friendly medication packaging that is designed to be child-resistant and elderly-friendly, all while improving pharmacy workflows and reducing medication errors.
  • Hale Therapeutics is on a mission to end one of the leading causes of preventable death; smoking. Through their consumer-facing device, they’ve combined smoking cessation science with an elegant full-stack solution to wean people off of nicotine. Hale’s connected medical vaporizer automatically and gradually reduces nicotine intake over time, helping people achieve their goals of quitting smoking better than current Nicotine Replacement Therapies.
  • Telling.ai answers the question “how are your lungs doing” by giving users a detailed lung performance report by simply speaking into a smartphone. The company’s vision is to turn every smartphone in the world into a powerful remote respiratory monitoring device through a simple app and that will improve wellness and prevent unneeded hospitalizations and ED visits.
  • Naima Health is an interdisciplinary team developing the MyHealthyPregnancy app which uses decision science, machine learning, and maternal-fetal health expertise to help pregnant women minimize their risk of adverse outcomes – including preterm birth.

Spoken helps people with aphasia or other language disorders speak again by predicting likely words and phrases. The company has taken the same machine learning algorithms that power a phone’s autocomplete function and applied them to much bigger data, giving suggestions that fit the context and improve with time. It’s a radically different approach to treating disabilities that aims to serve a growing global market.

Vanguard Gastroenterology in Manhattan Emphasizes Importance of Colon Cancer Screenings Given Findings of Increased Early-onset Colon Cancer Rates Reported in JAMA

[ad_1]

News Image

“Fortunately, colon cancer is preventable, with timely colonoscopy screening able to detect and remove pre-cancerous growth and prevent colon cancer,” added Vanguard Gastroenterology colleague Inessa Khaykis, MD.

Vanguard Gastroenterology of Manhattan (http://www.gastro-nyc.com) is helping raise the alarm over additional news of increased early-onset colon cancer rates. As reported in JAMA Network Open in November, a cross-sectional study by the University of Colorado School of Medicine revealed that rates of early-onset colorectal adenocarcinoma have increased.

These findings follow the United States Multi-Society Task Force (MSTF) on Colorectal Cancer updated screening recommendations, endorsing 45 instead of 50 as the age to start average-risk CRC screenings. The MSTF is comprised of representatives from the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG), the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE).

“Traditionally, colon cancer has been seen as a disease of older persons, but it is now clear that this conception is changing, with even those in the 30s and 40s at risk,” states Edward Brettholz, MD, of Vanguard Gastroenterology. “We urge patients to consult their doctors and get their CRC screenings on time, especially after the drop in screenings due to COVID.”

“Fortunately, colon cancer is preventable, with timely colonoscopy screening able to detect and remove pre-cancerous growth and prevent colon cancer,” added Vanguard Gastroenterology colleague Inessa Khaykis, MD.

Vanguard Gastroenterology wants patients to know that:

  • Colon cancer is preventable
  • A program of regular screening colonoscopy should begin at age 45 in all average-risk adults of all races and ethnicities in both men and women,
  • Those with a family history of colon cancer should begin screening at 40, or 10 years younger than the age of the family member who was diagnosed, whichever is earlier,
  • Screening is recommended for those with inflammatory bowel disease, or for those with a history of abdominal pelvic radiation,
  • Symptoms of colon cancer such as unexplained abdominal pain or weight loss, change in bowel habits, rectal bleeding or the finding of anemia should have a diagnostic colonoscopy at any age, and
  • Colonoscopy is easy, safe, and painless and the best time to schedule a colonoscopy is now.

About Vanguard Gastroenterology:

Vanguard Gastroenterology offers services that include gastro consultations, clinical trials, colonoscopy procedures, upper endoscopy, screening colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy exams, capsule endoscopy, ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, integrative weight management, fecal microbiota transplantation and much more. They serve patients throughout New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Visit them online at http://www.gastro-nyc.com

Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Launches Operation Guardian Angel

[ad_1]

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with Ideal Option, a national leader in outpatient medication-assisted treatment for addiction, to roll out their new program: Operation Guardian Angel. The program is aimed at diverting more people who possess illicit substances for personal use into recovery.

In November 2020, Oregon voted in favor of Measure 110, the Drug Addiction Treatment & Recovery Act. While the full effect of Measure 110 has yet to be realized, the data so far is underwhelming. A five-month study by the Oregon Department of Justice showed that out of 1,085 citations issued for drug possession since the Measure was enacted into law last February, only three assessment/screening verifications were received and 400 people failed to appear for their court date.

Operation Guardian Angel, modeled after successful programs in other states, is designed to empower those in the community who are struggling with the disease of addiction to come forward without fear of legal repercussions and begin their recovery with medication-assisted treatment.

The kick-off event will take place on Friday, Dec. 10, 11:00 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Ideal Option clinic located at 404 NE Penn Ave. in Bend. Individuals are invited to voluntarily surrender their illicit substances and paraphernalia for safe disposal and transfer immediately to Ideal Option to be enrolled in their evidence-based outpatient treatment program. Most people will be able to see a provider that same day or make an appointment for the next business day. For nearly all patients, costs are covered by Medicaid or private insurance.

All members of the community and representatives of the media are welcome to attend the event to learn more and pick up educational materials for themselves or loved ones.

After the kick-off event, individuals interested in the program are encouraged to contact the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office or contact Ideal Option directly to start treatment.

The Ideal Option clinic in Bend is open Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. and is located at 404 NE Penn Ave., Bend, OR 97701.

Ideal Option has helped nearly 50,000 people with medication-assisted treatment for addiction to fentanyl, methamphetamine, alcohol and other substances since 2012 and has over 70 clinics nationwide, including locations in Bend, Salem, Eugene, Corvallis and Hillsboro.

About Ideal Option

Headquartered in Kennewick, Washington, Ideal Option was founded in 2012 and has since helped nearly 50,000 patients through a network of over 70 office-based medication-assisted treatment (MAT) clinics across 10 states. With a mission to serve under-served communities, Ideal Option accepts all forms of insurance including Medicaid and Medicare. Financial assistance and payment plans are also available.

Ideal Option’s team of medical providers carry certifications in Addiction and Emergency Medicine, Internal, OB/GYN, and Family Medicine, among other specialties. The company also employs social workers, caseworkers, counselors, and mental health practitioners. This holistic approach helps drive positive outcomes, including family stability, stable housing, improved overall health, and reduced rates of recidivism.

In all the communities it serves, Ideal Option collaborates with existing stakeholders and providers to improve the continuum of care. This approach includes partnerships with emergency rooms and county jail systems, where individuals with substance use disorder often appear, as well as collaborating with numerous support agencies and municipal programs addressing social needs such as housing, mental health, and nutrition support.

Orangetheory Fitness and Comfort Cases Team Up for 3rd Year For “Packing Parties” to Support Youth in Foster Care

[ad_1]

This Should Never Be a Child’s Suitcase

“It’s our mission to give back to our community – through a healthy lifestyle regimen at our studios and by providing to those in need.” — Matt Higgins, Orangetheory Fitness

West Virginia has one of the highest rates of children in foster care, currently with more than 6,803 youth without a “forever family.” To help these youth in need, local Orangetheory Fitness studios have once again partnered with international non-profit, Comfort Cases for two days of “packing parties” to provide essential and comfort items that will support them, particularly during their first days in which they enter foster care.

Money raised by Orangetheory Fitness members between November 12 and 26 will be used to purchase “Comfort Cases” filled with items including a new set of pajamas, a new blanket, age-appropriate hygiene kit, book and a stuffed animal to be given to foster care youth in need. Comfort Cases will be packed at Orangetheory Fitness studios and then distributed by local organizations to those in need.

Packing party dates, locations and beneficiaries:

1:00-2:00pm: Orangetheory Fitness

3034 Champion Dr, Barboursville, WV

Recipient Agency: NECCO Huntington

3:00-4:00pm: Orangetheory Fitness

310 Southridge Blvd, Charleston, WV

Recipient Agency: NECCO Charleston (Cross Lanes)

2:30-4:00pm: Orangetheory Fitness

360 Suncrest Towne Centre Drive, Morgantown, WV

Recipient Agency: Genesis Youth Crisis Center

Comfort Cases’ mission is to eliminate the demoralizing practice of placing children in homes with their belongings stuffed into trash bags.

“With more than 700 children entering foster care every day, and more than 400,000 children in foster care nationwide, it’s so important to not just raise awareness, but to also provide hope and dignity to them by giving back to these children,” states Comfort Cases founder Rob Scheer. “

“This is our 3rd year partnering with Comfort Cases to benefit these local organizations and our kids here in West Virginia,” states Matt Higgins, Orangetheory Fitness franchisee. “It’s our mission to give back to our community – through a healthy lifestyle regimen at our studios and by providing to those in need. Our members are just as excited as we are to participate at our packing parties.”

NOTE: Spokespeople from Orangetheory Fitness, Comfort Cases and beneficiary agencies are available for interview – prior to and on the day of the packing parties.

SAC Health Pediatrics

SAC Health Pediatrics Clinic

“Part of our mission is to provide health care to all, especially in areas with underserved populations. Our new clinics will allow us to meet those needs and provide care near or within their own community.” -Jason Lohr, MD, CEO

The Blythe clinic will include services in the following areas: family medicine, pediatrics, behavioral health, and more. SAC Health’s partnership with other health care providers will bring the much-needed expertise of physicians from other regional medical centers such as Loma Linda University Health to the area.

Mountain View Avenue, just across from Barstow Community Hospital, and will provide similar services as that of the Blythe clinic, with the addition of: pediatric specialties; obstetrics and gynecology; internal medicine and medical specialties; family dentistry; behavioral health; and surgical specialties.

Since opening the main campus in San Bernardino five years ago, SAC Health has steadily grown its patient base as well as new locations in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. “Part of our mission is to provide health care to all, especially in areas with underserved populations,” says Jason Lohr, MD, CEO of SAC Health. “We believe that anyone who needs medical service should be provided with the best possible care—regardless of their ability to pay. Our new clinics will allow us to meet those needs and provide care near or within their own community.”

Accredited Continuing Education Focused on Earlier SpA Diagnosis

[ad_1]

Learning activity for medical professionals

Accredited continuing education programs from SAA

Improving axSpA awareness among our front-line health care providers has been a long-time focus of SAA. These accredited programs represent a highly engaging and interactive approach to reach these key medical professionals.

Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a chronic inflammatory disease which impacts more than 3.2 million Americans. Because axSpA sometimes manifests very few visible clinical signs on exams and can be hidden in the larger population of back pain sufferers, the symptoms of axSpA can often go unrecognized. In fact, nearly 54 percent of patients with the disease go undiagnosed between seven and 10 years. During this extensive delay to diagnosis, the disease goes uncontrolled and unchecked by treatment and causes damage – damage that cannot be undone. SAA is tackling this issue by rolling out accredited continuing education programs to aid primary care and chiropractic professionals in the early recognition of axSpA symptoms.

“We’re thrilled to offer these educational programs and believe they will make a significant impact for many of our undiagnosed community members,” said SAA’s CEO Cassie Shafer. “Improving axSpA awareness among our front-line health care providers has been a long-time focus of SAA. These accredited programs represent a highly engaging and interactive approach to reach these key medical professionals,” Shafer added.

Thanks to generous funding from a long-time, valued donor, SAA has been able to conceptualize, develop, and is now launching two interactive, highly engaging, accredited online learning activities: one specifically designed for primary care providers – including PCPs, NPs, and PAs, and a second for chiropractors. Both learning modules are offered free of charge and accredited for 1.0 CEH for use towards applicable recertification and license renewals.

Demystifying AxSpA in Primary Care: Recognition, Diagnosis, and What Comes Next

This accredited educational activity aims to increase recognition and understanding of axial spondyloarthritis among primary care providers, specifically focusing on helping the learners identify key signs and symptoms, conduct an appropriate work-up, and know when to refer to rheumatology. This accredited activity is hosted on FreeCME and can be accessed here.

*This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of EXCEL Continuing Education and The Spondylitis Association of America. EXCEL Continuing Education is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Spotting Axial Spondyloarthritis in Chiropractic Settings: Is AxSpA Behind Your Patient’s Back Pain?

This is a uniquely chiropractic-targeted educational activity, geared to helping chiropractors appropriately suspect axial spondyloarthritis in their chronic back pain patients, and urge them to refer for further evaluation. It also stresses the danger of specific chiropractic modalities (high velocity “adjustment”) for anyone with spinal fusion. This accredited activity is hosted on FreeCME and can be accessed here.
