This year more than 220,000 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer. More than 140,000 will die of the disease — more than will die from breast, colon and prostate cancer combined. Please know that:
-
Anyone can get lung cancer. 65% of people newly diagnosed with lung cancer have never smoked or are former smokers. 20% have no history of tobacco use at all. - If you smoke, talk to your doctor to get support to stop smoking. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer.
- Lung cancer was once considered a terminal diagnosis, but today new treatments are improving survival for many patients.
- If you are a current or former smoker – ages 55-to-80 – talk to your health care provider about getting an annual lung cancer screening exam. This low-dose C-T or “CAT” scan is the only test proven to significantly reduce lung cancer deaths and is covered by Medicare and private insurance for those who qualify.
