Dr. Temple Grandin, a leading authority on autism, who is autistic herself, is the keynote speaker on this compelling and challenging subject during an interactive, online fundraiser to benefit MacDonald Training Center Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m.
“A trailblazer for people with autism, Dr. Grandin’s life’s work has been to understand her own autistic mind and share that knowledge to help others better support their autistic loved ones,” said Karenne Levy, President and CEO of MacDonald Training Center.
Dr. Grandin is a sought-after public speaker, and frequent presenter on TED Talks, where her most recent topic was “The World Needs All Kinds of Minds.”
In 2020, the CDC reported that approximately 1 in 54 children in the U.S. is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to 2016 data. Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed with autism than girls.
The latest estimate of autism prevalence — 1 in 54 — is up 10 percent from the 1 in 59 estimate, based on data collected in 2014, and is more than double the 1 in 150 figure reported in 2000. In fact, the trend has been steeply upward since the early 1990s, not only in the U.S. but globally.
At the heart of Dr. Grandin’s message is this provocative declaration: “Rigid academic and social expectations could wind up stifling a mind that, while it might struggle to conjugate a verb, could one day take us to distant stars.”
