Clarity Child Guidance Center Breaks Ground on Vital Renovations to Increase Capacity for Children facing Mental Health Challenges

Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai and District 8 Councilman Manny Pelaez publicly reaffirmed their commitment to youth mental health for San Antonio area. Judge Sakai stated “I’m well aware of the escalating needs in the community and I think the community recognizes that COVID was a once-in-a-lifetime crisis, and it continues. The impact of COVID has been devastating, which means we have to double down and add more resources for mental health to care especially those in need.”

Councilman Pelaez added, “I thank God every single day that there are people like the folks who work at Clarity who make the difference for these kids. There is no doubt in my mind that for the first time ever, you have a city council who, in unison, now speak the language of mental health and trauma-informed care. We are making sure that we don’t just deliver streets, sidewalks, parks, drainage and an airport, but also deliver an ecosystem where everybody has that right to live, work and play. And that those who are most brittle and vulnerable can also reclaim that right to live work and play.”

The capital campaign will be funded in three phases. Completion of the expansion depends on funding but will realistically take four to five years.

Phase One, estimated to cost $6.5 million, is $1.7 away from being fully funded; construction started Aug. 28, 2023, after 70% of funds were secured—including the $1 million from MHM—and should be completed by early summer of 2024.

  • Phase One will include the renovation of an existing building into an eight-bed Pediatric Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PPICU) with trauma-informed space dedicated to children with very complex trauma, a secured courtyard and a dedicated space for programming. These expanded services will serve at least an additional 700 children per year. 
  • Phase One will also update and expand the kitchen, originally built in 1986, to feed 125 patients.
  • The expansion of phase one will require about 15 additional staff, including nurses, therapists and additional housekeeping.

Phase Two will cost about $3.7 million to finish the third floor of the existing Outpatient Building to allow more therapists, psychiatrists and psychologists to schedule 4,500 more outpatient appointments annually.

  • Southwest Psychiatric Physicians will relocate to this space. Presently—even before Phase Two—Clarity offers the region’s largest concentration of child and adolescent psychiatrists through its onsite affiliations with Southwest Psychiatric Physicians and UT Health San Antonio.
  • Clarity will also expand the Next Step program—where families “receive rapid access appointments, urgent care assessments, and evaluations with a licensed clinician—to increase space and accessibility.”
  • Construction on Phase Two is expected to begin when funding for that phase is 70% complete.

Phase Three will cost $3.6 million and will expand the crisis services department, adding two additional observation rooms and expanding the lobby, allowing Clarity to assess an additional 60 kids in crisis/month.

Background:
The U.S. Surgeon General’s recent advisory warned that mental health challenges are the leading cause of disability and poor life outcomes in young people, with up to 1 in 5 children ages 3 to 17 in the U.S. having a mental, emotional, developmental or behavioral disorder. In Texas, more than 67% of children who need treatment never receive it—even though 25% have onset by age 7—due to three barriers: a lack of service providers where they live; stigma around mental health; and the ability to pay for services.

60 percent of the children served by Clarity are uninsured, under-insured, or low-income, making the organization even more a valuable resource for the community given the barriers that exist in accessing care. The barriers to care compound a troubling trend among area youth. The San Antonio Teen Mental Health Survey conducted in the spring 2022, found that 37% of youth expressed an inability to perform day to day tasks and 49% stated feeling helpless, hopeless, numb, or like nothing matters.

Infrared inspections, also known as thermographic inspections, are non-invasive diagnostic tools that employ thermal imaging to identify anomalies in electrical systems. The key benefit of this technique is its ability to detect hot spots, which can indicate overloaded circuits, loose connections, or faulty components. These hot spots often precede more significant problems, such as electrical fires, which makes their early identification crucial for safety and cost-effectiveness.

Hot spots are the silent threats that occur when electrical connections become loose, causing resistance in the circuit. As current flows through the area of resistance, it generates heat. Over time, this localized heating can escalate, ultimately leading to catastrophic failures. The problem is that hot spots are often invisible to the naked eye, and traditional inspections might not identify them until it’s too late.

Infrared scanning, in the context of panels and equipment, is a proactive approach to identifying these hot spots. Here’s how it works:

  • Prior to the inspection, the equipment must be in a stable and steady-state operation. This ensures that any potential issues are more likely to be detected.
  • Thermal imaging: A certified electrician uses an infrared camera to capture images of the equipment and panels. These images display temperature variations, with hot spots appearing as bright areas in the image. At ground zero for L.A.’s fentanyl problem, a community festival offers help

As drug overdose deaths intensify in Skid Row, local organizations team up to promote fentanyl awareness.

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 27, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — On a sunny late-autumn afternoon in downtown Los Angeles, dozens of men and women gathered in a pocket park, pounding out beats in a drum circle, eating a picnic lunch — and receiving free anti-overdose medication. It was just like any neighborhood block party, except the gathering’s purpose was to address rampant fentanyl and methamphetamine use, and the block was in the middle of Skid Row, an area known for high levels of homelessness.

A November 2023 report from A-Mark Foundation highlights the disproportionate impact of fentanyl on homeless communities around the country, with a focus on Los Angeles, where fentanyl overdose deaths skyrocketed by 1,280% from 2016 to 2021. Drug overdoses accounted for more than one-third of all deaths among people experiencing homelessness in L.A. County from 2020 to 2021, and unhoused individuals were 38.9 times more likely to die of a drug overdose than the housed population.

The Nov. 30 event, held at Gladys Park, was the second community resource fair in Skid Row in 2023 aimed at providing information and resources to a population dealing with the problems related to increasing drug overdoses, specifically from fentanyl, as detailed in the report.

The aim of these events, which are sponsored in part by A-Mark Foundation in partnership with the LA Mayor’s Office, was to deliver resources and information to prevent further losses of life. Illicitly manufactured synthetic opioids such as fentanyl are fueling the ongoing opioid crisis. With a potency 50 to 100 times stronger than heroin or morphine, fentanyl is extremely addictive, and even small doses can be deadly.

City organizations and independent nonprofits set up booths offering free clothing, and other tents and booths distributed pamphlets, program signups, and stacks of two-pack boxes of Narcan, an emergency nasal spray used to counteract fentanyl-related overdoses.

The report from A-Mark Foundation offers more details on possible solutions to the problem of fentanyl among the unhoused community, including investments in affordable housing, health care, mental health services, and substance use treatment alongside short-term measures such as Narcan and fentanyl test strips.

Prevent Blindness Joins National Glaucoma Awareness Month in January to Educate the Public and Professionals on the “Silent Thief of Sight”

Prevent Blindness provides free glaucoma educational resources, including a new promotional toolkit for “The Glaucoma Community,” glaucoma patient testimonial, and medical expert interview videos

All Glaucoma Community content is written by professional health writers and reviewed by the Expert Advisory Council for The Glaucoma Community. As part of National Glaucoma Awareness Month, Prevent Blindness will be debuting the new “Focus on Eye Health Patient Story: Glaucoma” video, featuring Prevent Blindness Associate Director of Eye Health Services, Tasha R. Lockridge, sharing her personal journey with glaucoma. She provides a unique perspective of her years helping others with vision health issues, and later being diagnosed with the eye disease.

Additionally, Constance Okeke, MD, MSCE, glaucoma specialist at Virginia Eye Consultants, and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Eastern Virginia Medical School, speaks with Prevent Blindness President and CEO Jeff Todd for the “Understanding Glaucoma” and “Information and Resources for Glaucoma Patients” episodes in the Prevent Blindness Focus on Eye Health Expert Series.

“With early detection and adherence to treatment, sight can be saved from glaucoma,” said Mr. Todd. “We invite everyone to utilize our free resources to learn about glaucoma and the steps that must be taken today to preserve vision for years to come.”
