RT MicroDx Founder & CEO Nathalya Mamane to Present at Biotech Showcase During JPM Week

RT MicroDx is working to develop a platform technology to bring molecular diagnostics into consumers’ homes. As a first use case, Mamane and her team have selected the use of saliva for the detection of Strep A; they are planning to develop similar home diagnostic tests for other conditions that are currently diagnosed via PCR testing options, such as respiratory illnesses, infectious diseases, oral infections, and more. Previous studies (not conducted by RT MicroDx) have proven that saliva is an adequate vector for detecting strep using DNA amplification, and RT MicroDx has developed a patent-pending, first-of-its-kind technology to allow for a simple, binary, positive/negative strip readout without the need for expensive laboratory equipment, advanced health literacy, or access to technology to interpret results at home.

RT MicroDx has completed proof-of-concept studies for its Strep A test and is currently seeking capital in order to submit for FDA approval to begin first-in-human trials. The company has previously earned recognition as a runner-up in the 2022 MIT Launch Challenge, first place winner in the Blank Center for Entrepreneurship at Babson College “Babson Entrepreneurial Thought & Action” challenge, a finalist in the Mass Challenge US Early Stage Cohort 2022, and a finalist in the Mass Innovation Eddies Cohort 2023. Mamane and RT MicroDx have also been featured in Axios, GenomeWeb, and Boston Business Journal.

Hollander Foundation Pours $20,000 into Prostate Cancer Research from Wine-Making Proceeds

Dr. Robert Hollander, the winemaker and principle of 2redWinery, started small-volume wine making in 2007 in pursuit of a long-standing passion in wine. After he was diagnosed with prostate cancer at an incurable stage in 2010, Dr. Hollander, a highly-regarded clinician/teacher at the Gainesville VA Medical Center, affiliated with the University of Florida, then created his Foundation to fund prostate cancer research. Dr. Hollander funds his foundation through his non-profit winemaking and crowdfunding. His current crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo is currently two-thirds towards its goal was cited by the Indiegogo staff as an Indiegogo Staff Team Favorite.

The $20000 gift, while modest in terms of what researchers like Dr. Shenderov may receive in NIH-funded grants, represents more than 10% of the Hollander Foundation assets. “We will continue to support Hong Kong and Macao in harnessing their distinctive strengths, better integrating themselves into China’s overall development, and securing long-term prosperity and stability,” Xi said.

“China will surely be reunified,” Xi stressed, adding that all Chinese people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits should be bound by a common sense of purpose and share in the glory of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

He also discussed global development in his address. “No matter how the global landscape may evolve, peace and development remain the underlying trend, and only cooperation for mutual benefit can deliver,” Xi said.

China is willing to work closely with the international community for the common good of humanity, build a community with a shared future for mankind, and make the world a better place for all, he added.

There are numerous causal factors, yet the disproportionate number of Black maternal deaths and Black infant mortalities does little to change perceptions among many Blacks that they cannot trust healthcare institutions. Has your presence made a difference in perceptions? How have Black patients responded?

“I think that my presence has made a difference in perceptions, mainly because Black practitioners have better outcomes for both Black birthing patients and Black infants. Being trained at Howard University, a historically Black university, I take Black maternal mortality and infant mortality extremely seriously. I am equally concerned about all of my patients. Pregnancy and postpartum are critical times in a birthing person’s life for their health and safety.”

You are among the WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital doctors who use robotics in medical procedures. How are you using robotics? How is it advancing surgical procedures and recovery?

“Robotics is a tool like any other surgical tool. It facilitates surgeons like myself to do more complex cases than can effectively be accomplished with a lot of the standard laparoscopic tools. It can sometimes create a situation where a patient can have a minimally invasive surgery, where they otherwise would not be a candidate, which generally improves infection rates, healing and recovery, and blood loss. I use robotics to do multiple gynecologic surgeries, particularly when it is safer for the patient. Improved visualization and articulation of the instruments also allows me to perform surgery with more precision than straight-stick laparoscopy allows.”

Childbirth should be a natural process, yet complications can occur. As a WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital midwife, are you with the mother from pregnancy to delivery? What steps do you take to ensure a successful birthing experience? 

“As a team of OB/GYNs and Midwives, we work together to meet a spectrum of low to high-risk clients during pregnancy, birth, and beyond. We set realistic expectations of what success looks like prenatally and provide close bedside support and encouragement. We also explore ways to expand our skills and expertise in trauma-based care, which is essential in pregnancy and birth. Many women that we serve carry traumatic experiences from childhood or even past births. We help them begin the healing process.”

Though you are a midwife, do you assume other roles when a patient has overwhelming needs, some beyond your scope to provide? If so, what steps do you take to find answers for her or meet her needs?

“As a midwife with a background in public health, I see myself as a connector or weaver who considers community resources and where I can connect my clients for needs that I may not be able to fulfill. I advocate for them and have a policy of close follow-up to avoid slipping through the cracks while under my care. Most importantly, I listen carefully. Women are often very clear about what they need if we, as care providers, listen to them.”

Philadelphia’s Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church Clergyman Makes Black Health A Priority

Motivated by personal loss, the deaths of his mother, sister, and brother-in-law to heart disease, Rev. Miles champions improved health policies locally and nationally. “Systemic racism leads to poor health outcomes for many Blacks. Education is key, and I commit to being an educator. I don’t just speak out as a theologian. I also voice my story and offer a solution that resonates with Blacks. My family history prepared me for this moment. I have no fear. Whether talking with someone on Philadelphia streets or elected officials, I give both the same level of respect. They know mine are action words because Black lives matter,” he concludes. 

His resolve stems from a deep understanding of factors that contribute to poor health outcomes for many Blacks, turning his tragedy into a relentless pursuit of change. In a compelling testament to the critical importance of community well-being, Rev. Leroy Miles is a powerful advocate for Black health in Philadelphia and beyond.

“Strengthening families and communities is pivotal to our church mission. I embrace this commitment,” Rev. Miles states, drawing on his life experiences and faith to embody the principles of compassion, understanding, and empathy. That he serves others in a way that shows God’s love is the most significant way to make a difference. 

As a certified health coach, Rev. Miles makes a difference in many ways through collaborations. “I collaborate with Philadelphia hospitals, health organizations, and governmental bodies, to name some. Bridging gaps in healthcare access cannot occur without broad-based strategic relationships. Partnerships allow me to cast a wide net,” he concludes. Notable partnerships include one with Penn Medicine, where Rev. Miles spearheads the “Know Your Numbers! Campaign,” a health screening that gives treatment, health education, and support to people unaware that they have high blood pressure. High blood pressure is prevalent among African-American men and women. “Enon teams with Penn Medicine and organizes health events at the church for Black men. They learn about cardiovascular disease prevention. An estimated 900 men received health screenings and information at Enon,” shares Rev. Miles. He is also on the Philadelphia American Heart Association board.

As public recognition of his passion and expertise grows, so do speaking requests. Rev. Miles is a sought-after panelist on diseases prevalent among African-Americans. This past September, he presented at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 52nd Annual Legislative Conference.

“Some ask if I get tired, and the answer is no. I understand my limitations yet lean on strengths vital to overcoming barriers. With God’s help, our mission is beyond country borders now.
