Physician Medical Group M&A Activity Decreases 11% in Q4:22, According to Data from Irving Levin Associates, LLC

News Image

“Higher interest rates impacted the final quarter, but investor interest is still high, and we anticipate that deal activity will bounce back in the first quarter of 2023.”

Merger and acquisition activity in the Physician Medical Group sector declined by 11% in Q4:22, according to data captured in LevinPro HC. Yet, the fourth quarter of 2022 had a 11% increase in activity compared with Q4:21 when 138 PMG acquisitions were announced. In addition to deal volume falling, announced spending in the fourth quarter of 2022 also declined. The only PMG deal to have a disclosed price was Digital Transformation Opportunities Corp.’s acquisition of American Oncology Network, LLC for $500 million. This is a significant decrease from Q3:22 with more than $786.2 million in disclosed prices across two deals.

The PMG subsector with the most activity was dental practices with 60 transactions, representing 39% of the total. This accounts for an approximately 28% decrease from Q3:22 when 83 dental deals were reported. The second-busiest specialty was eye care with 16 deals, a slight drop from the 22 eye care deals in Q3:22.

Keeping in line with past trends, private equity (PE) firms and their portfolio companies were responsible for most of the PMG activity, representing 67% of PMG deals in Q4:22 for a total of 102 transactions. PE activity this past quarter fell short of previous quarters. In Q3:22, PE buyer activity accounted for 72% of deals and Q4:21 accounted for 70% of deals.

“While PMG activity reported in Q4:22 is lower than the previous quarter, that doesn’t necessarily mean that PMG interest overall is declining. Higher interest rates impacted the final quarter, but investor interest is still high, and we anticipate that deal activity will bounce back in the first quarter of 2023,” said Glenn Kalinoski, Editor of Healthcare at Irving Levin Associates.

All quarterly results are published in The Health Care M&A Report, which is part of the Irving Levin Associates and LevinPro investment research source. First Graphic Novel From ASHA Press Helps Middle School Children Defeat a Common Nemesis: “The Time Snatcher”

[ad_1]

A new graphic novel from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and author and speech-language pathologist Mindy Hudon, MS, CCC-SLP, is a must-have for children who struggle with time management—and an excellent resource for the professionals who work with them.

In Kodi’s Adventures: How I Defeated the Time Snatcher, protagonist Kodi is a middle school student who frequently experiences negative consequences resulting from his easy distraction and procrastination.

From the book’s synopsis: “It’s the first day of middle school and Kodi is ready for a new start. Goodbye to missed buses, lost papers, incomplete homework, and hello to being on time, good grades, and time for video games! He is sure that things will be different. But his plans don’t go as he imagined. Day after day, time keeps getting away from him and he feels defeated. What can be snatching his time?”

Playfully illustrated by Barbara Szepesi Szucs, the book is intended for middle school students and their parents/caregivers; school-based and private-practice speech-language pathologists; educators; and therapists, school counselors, and other professionals specializing in executive functioning, autism, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. It’s the first graphic novel published by ASHA Press, an imprint of ASHA.

“In both my personal and professional life, I have seen kids struggle to comply with their teachers’ and parents’ requests around time—whether it’s completing an assignment or project, getting out the door in the morning, or tending to any number of other daily tasks,” said Hudon. “Time management is a much-needed life skill that is expected but rarely taught. Through this story, I hope to present a character that children can relate to as well as help them improve their lives through simple strategies that feel achievable to them.”

Content in the book teaches time management by helping children identify their personal “time snatchers”—and then showing how to defeat them. As it explains, a time snatcher is anything that distracts a person, causing them to lose track of time. Some common time snatchers are video games, television, toys and games, a person’s own thoughts, efforts spent finding things, and time spent with friends.

According to Hudon, many children need help to “see and feel” the passage of time. Among her strategies is employing an analog clock because it not only shows “now” time like a digital clock does, but also “past” time and “future” time.

“I want to help kids understand that they can have control of their time,” Hudon explains. “By seeing time beyond the current moment, they can plan and live their lives more effectively. This can reduce a lot of the stress, frustration, and shame that children may feel.”

Extras

The book includes child-friendly explanations of key concepts and skills—including time management, organization, and executive functioning—as well as detailed how-to’s for making a plan to defeat time snatchers and organizing their personal spaces.

Accolades

Kodi’s Adventures: How I Defeated the Time Snatcher has already earned a prestigious Mom’s Choice Award®. Through the program, a panel bound by a strict code of ethics rigorously evaluates submissions and determines the best in family-friendly media, products, and services.

“Parents and educators know that products and services bearing our seal of approval are high-quality and also a great value,” said Dawn Matheson, executive director of the Mom’s Choice Awards (MCA). “The MCA evaluation program is designed to incorporate the expertise of scientists, physicians and other specialists, but we also engage parents, children, educators, and caregivers because they are experts in knowing what is best for their families.”

Purchasing Kodi

Kodi’s Adventures: How I Defeated the Time Snatcher can be purchased on the ASHA website (discount available for ASHA members) or on Amazon for $27.99.

Why Use Humanized Mouse Models for Translational Studies in Inflammatory Disorders? Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

[ad_1]

The featured speakers will showcase drug testing in humanized mouse models in two therapeutic areas: food allergy and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD).

The drug development process strongly relies on the predictivity of preclinical mouse modeling. Humanized mouse models, i.e., mouse models that recapitulate human components are therefore highly valuable translational tools.

In this webinar, the featured speakers will showcase drug testing in humanized mouse models in two therapeutic areas: food allergy and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD):

1.    Inflammatory bowel diseases, which include ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, are characterized by a chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract. Even though conventional treatments such as immune modulators might improve the symptoms, a high number of patients do not respond to the available treatments. In the first part of the webinar, Dr. Ho Wang Yin, PhD, CIO will show how humanized mouse models help develop new therapies for IBD. She will provide an overview of chemically induced models of acute colitis (DSS and TNBS), the pros and cons of each model and a summary of typical study design.

2.    Peanut allergy affects up to two percent of the pediatric population and is a high unmet medical need as peanut ingestion is the most common cause of food induced anaphylaxis in the US. Oral immunotherapy, the only US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved therapy, is lengthy and carries the risk of serious side effects. In the second part of the webinar, Dr. Wuillemin will demonstrate the efficacy of MY006, a passive immunotherapy developed thanks to Mabylon’s unique antibody discovery platform, for the treatment of peanut allergy in humanized mouse models.

Register for this webinar to explore the importance of using humanized mouse models for translational studies in inflammatory disorders.

Join Natascha Wuillemin, PhD, Executive Vice President Immunology at Mabylon AG; and Kiave-Yune Ho Wang Yin, PhD, Director of Innovation and Business development at TransCure bioServices, for the live webinar on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at 11am EST (4pm GMT/UK).

Vector Solutions Offers Free Training In Honor Of Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month in January

[ad_1]

Today, Vector Solutions, the leading provider of training and compliance-based software solutions for public safety agencies, announced a major education initiative. Two of its most important National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) training courses will be complimentary in honor of Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month. Vector Solutions is offering these courses free of charge during the month of January for fire service members in an effort to raise awareness about the critical health issues affecting firefighters.

Firefighting is an overall dangerous profession, not only on the fireground where the risks are obvious, but also in terms of the occupational hazard of cancer-causing substances. Over time, increasing evidence validates the risk of developing cancer for those in the fire service. Vector Solutions takes these risks seriously and is tackling the problem head on with its training management programs.

“While being a firefighter is a calling for many men and women, it’s a profession that comes with tremendous risks, both mentally and physically,” said Jonathan Cherins, CEO at Vector Solutions. “In recent years we’ve learned more about the cancer-related health threats firefighters face, as well as the mental anguish they endure. Our team at Vector Solutions is in awe of the commitment and sacrifice these heroes make. We’re pleased to make these courses available at no cost to help raise awareness on these critical topics.”

Both courses are video-based online NFPA trainings compliant with NFPA standards. The courses include engaging interactions, real-life case studies, critical lessons and prevention strategies for first responders. NFPA 1851: Cancer-Related Risks of Firefighter provides a thorough understanding of fire-service related cancer risks for today’s firefighter and fire personnel. NFPA 1500: PTSD in the Fire Industry provides a better understanding of PTSD, how to cope with symptoms and suicidal thoughts, and how to identify them in peers who may be struggling.

“The Firefighter Cancer Support Network is excited to support the educational opportunities that Vector Solutions is bringing to Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month in January by offering two very important NFPA courses free of charge,” said Bryan Frieders, FCSN CEO/President and retired Fire Chief. “Cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths in the fire service. Together, through increased public awareness, support and education, we can provide firefighters the necessary tools and guidance to develop life-saving protocols for cancer prevention and to support those with a cancer diagnosis within their departments.”

Vector Solutions is committed to raising awareness and keeping firefighters safe. As a part of this campaign to benefit the American Cancer Society and the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, Vector Solutions is pleased to donate $1 to the American Cancer Society and the Firefighter Cancer Support Network for every completion of the NFPA 1851: Cancer-Related Risks of Firefighting course. The donation is $1 per course completion up to $3,000 to each organization for every course completed before March 30, 2023.

Family & Implant Dentistry Invests in State-of-the-Art Dental Technologies and Digital Services

[ad_1]

Family and Implant Dentistry in Lincoln, NE

Family and Implant Dentistry in Lincoln, NE

At our practice, we’ve invested in the latest technologies to ensure successful outcomes because dental implants are the future of restorative dentistry.

Nebraska native, and founder of Family and Implant Dentistry in Lincoln, Nebraska, Dr. Derek Hoffman, is proud to announce that his dental practice has invested in the latest dental technology and digital services available, to maximize efficiency, patient comfort, and successful treatment.

Dental implants have become an increasingly popular choice for patients who are missing teeth, according to Dr. Hoffman, who is an active member of the Misch International Implant Institute and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.

Dental implants are the most advanced treatment available for not only restoring a smile but for ensuring that the jaw bone is preserved and reducing the risk of further tooth loss. “At our practice, we’ve invested in the latest technologies to ensure successful outcomes because dental implants are the future of restorative dentistry,” Dr. Hoffman said.

By way of example, technologies Dr. Hoffman has invested in for his practice include intra-oral scanners, which provide an immediate 3D scan of a patient’s mouth. All scans can be viewed in each operatory within his practice in just minutes.

“3D intraoral scanners empower patients by showing them exactly what is happening with their teeth and gums. That makes it an incredible educational tool. At our practice, we believe that informed patients make the best decisions for their oral health,” he said.

In addition, Family and Implant Dentistry also acquired a Cone Beam Scanner, which represents the latest advancement in x-ray technology. Cone Beam Computed Tomography allows for 3D images of the mouth that detail the condition of not only the teeth, but the surrounding soft tissues such as the tongue, nerves, and gums. Cone Beam scanning exposes patients to far less radiation than traditional x-rays.

Hoffman also upgraded payment capabilities allowing for fully contactless payment, resulting in a fully modernized, digital office. Commensurate with the investment in technologies, Family & Implant Dentistry also launched a new website, with an emphasis on education, and ease of scheduling for patients.

“We are excited to continue to deliver an unparalleled patient experience at our practice. By investing in the dental technologies of the future, and making scheduling and education accessible for our patients, we hope to encourage patients throughout the greater Lincoln region to prioritize their oral health, as an important aspect of their overall health and wellbeing,” Dr. Hoffman said.

Strategic Radiology Launches SR Health to Reduce Member Health Insurance Costs

[ad_1]

Scott Bundy, MD, FACR, CEO and Chair, Strategic Radiology

The cost of health insurance has become a pain point not just for private practice radiology, but for all employers in the U.S. Our practices came together, educated themselves on the options, and built an insurance captive program that will lower costs and improve flexibility for member groups.

On Jan. 1, 2023, Strategic Radiology (SR) launched SR Health, a self-funded health-care captive for its independent private practice membership. In creating a captive insurance plan, the coalition anticipates members to achieve up to 30% or more savings on premiums, greater control of coverage options, and visibility into plan data.

“The cost of health insurance has become a pain point not just for private practice radiology, but for all employers in the U.S.,” said Scott Bundy, MD, FACR, CEO and Chair, Strategic Radiology (SR). “Our practices came together, educated themselves on the options, and built an insurance captive program that will lower costs and improve flexibility for our member groups. In exercising an ownership mentality, Strategic Radiology member groups will reap significant cost savings and plan control.”

Eight member groups with a total of 2,000 covered lives are currently receiving benefits under the plan with many more of the 33 member groups expected to be onboarded throughout 2023 when existing contracts expire. Five fully vetted best-in-class contracted companies provide the following services: a captive analyst and program manager; a reinsurance provider; a pharmacy benefits manager; a third-party administrator; and a national broker.

The plan was researched and built during 2022 by the SR Captive Governance Committee, with representation from member groups and led by Dr. Bundy and Barbara Perez Deppman, FRBMA, FACHE, SR COO. “Our team worked with insurance brokers and consultants to identify and interview potential partners with deep experience in the independent insurance market,” said Ms. Deppman. “This program is a testament to the collaborative effectiveness of our owner-members.”

Strategic Radiology leveraged the collective scale of member groups to share risk in the captive layer and partner with best-in-class vendors to significantly reduce overall costs. With the guidance of a seasoned captive management advisory team, the plan was built to maximize value and control at the local individual practice level, minimize disruption of access to existing providers, and maintain economic fairness between high-claims and low-claims groups.

Worried about 2023? It might all be in your head

[ad_1]

Worried about 2023? You’re not the only one. Just don’t let the fear get to you.

What do doomsayers and fatalists have in common? A pessimistic attitude for certain, but also a lack of purpose, and issues with self-doubt and stress management.

“Rather than feeling fearful of the future and wallowing in a sense of helplessness, focus your energy on creating the type of future that you want.”

The state of the economy, resurging COVID cases, military conflicts, and the deteriorating health of the planet has many people feeling rather despondent these days and perhaps even a little fatalistic about what the new year might bring. But what lies at the root of this doom and gloom mindset? It likely wouldn’t surprise most people that extreme doomsayers are more likely to be pessimists, but according to a study by PsychTests.com, they also have a propensity for stubbornness and tend to lack effective coping skills.

Analyzing data collected from 12,259 people who took the Emotional Intelligence Test, PsychTests’ researchers compared two groups: people who are terrified of what the future holds (categorized as “Foreboders”) and those are not afraid (categorized as “Level-headers”).

HERE’S WHERE THEY DIFFERED:

> Not surprisingly, 61% of Foreboders are extreme pessimists (compared to 17% of Level-headers).

> 41% see life as being just one problem after another (compared to 9% of Level-headers).

> 55% ruminate excessively and keep themselves up at night thinking about problems (compared to 12% of Level-headers).

> 53% find it difficult to forget about their worries and just have fun (compared to 13% of Level-headers).

> 43% feel directionless and lack a sense of purpose (compared to 11% of Level-headers).

> 51% can’t figure out what they want out of life (compared to 14% of Level-headers).

> 58% are afraid that if they get their hopes up, they will be heartbreakingly disappointed (compared to 17% of Level-headers).

> 46% struggle to bounce back from disappointments, setbacks, and failures (compared to 10% of Level-headers).

> 36% feel like they don’t have any control over their lives (compared to 5% of Level-headers).

> 44% get angry, sad, or discouraged when even the smallest thing goes wrong in their lives (compared to 6% of Level-headers).

“Being concerned about the future is normal, especially given the economic crisis we are currently going through and the general sense of global unrest,” explains Dr. Ilona Jerabek, president of PsychTests. “This pushes us to prepare and plan, just in case. For example, many people are curbing their spending, striving to be more eco-conscious, and trying to appreciate the good in their lives rather than only focusing on the bad. However, don’t let a fear of the future nestle in too deep. Making decisions and taking actions from a state of fear generally doesn’t end well.”

“What we have seen in our study is that a fear of the future, or a tendency towards defeatist thinking, stems not just from fear, but also a lack of purpose and goals, self-doubt, and poor coping skills. So rather than feeling fearful of the future and wallowing in a sense of helplessness, focus your energy on creating the type of future that you want. Start a bucket list. Work on your confidence and stress management. Find the good in negative situations and look for things in your life to appreciate. Pay it forward or volunteer. If you fixate on all the bad that is going on, you will never be able to recognize the good. Remember, the future is unwritten, so no one can accurately predict what will happen. Prepare for the worst if you wish, but hope for the best too.”
