‘Exploring the options for senior living,’ a new report from Elder Placement Professionals

Worrying about making the right decision for a loved one can be eased by understanding more about the options that are available for senior living, lifestyles, and medical circumstances. Making a hard decision is easier when family members are fully informed.

Elder Placement Professionals specialize in working with everyone involved to find the best new living situation. There are many different types of senior living situations, each designed to meet the special individual needs of senior citizens. The San Luis Obispo assisted living service has professional relationships with numerous different types of elder living providers:

  • Home care, also referred to as aging in place, is an option where seniors continue to live in their own homes with support services. This choice allows them to maintain their independence and familiarity with their surroundings.
  • Nursing homes provide 24/7 medical care and support for seniors with complex medical needs or severe cognitive impairment.
  • Residential care homes are smaller facilities, with fewer residents than other types of living situations. A residential care home often has a quiet, homelike atmosphere and many seniors find comfort in new friends they meet and share meals and activities with. Residential care homes in California are licensed by the State of California.
  • Retirement communities are designed for retirees who are still active but need some assistance. Residents of retirement communities retain a great deal of independence and they may live independently in an apartment or bungalow and come and go as they please.
  • Alzheimer’s, Dementia, and Parkinson’s care facilities are designed specifically for individuals with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. They offer a safe and structured environment.
  • Assisted living facilities offer a balance between independence and support. Seniors have their apartments or rooms while receiving assistance with daily activities like medication management, meals, and housekeeping.

The professionals from the San Luis Obispo assisted living service spend the time necessary to find the perfect solution for loved ones, starting with an assessment of medical, social and financial needs. With their knowledge of the industry, they can help find the best options available, facilitate tours of recommended facilities, help negotiate affordable costs and facilitate the medical paperwork. And, their services are free.

Nicole Pazdan was drawn to senior citizens at a young age. She was a volunteer Candy Striper at 16 years old and then obtained her California Nurses Assistant (CNA) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license. She worked in a nursing home until she was 19, then went into home health care. Nicole received her Business Administration degree, from Cal Poly State University. In 1998 she moved her three boys to San Luis Obispo, CA. She became a Certified Senior Adviser (CSA) in 2007.

She founded Elder Placement Professionals after having a very difficult experience finding an assisted living facility for a family member Before this experience, she didn’t realize all the different service options available and didn’t know where to begin to get her family member placed. Nicole took a lot from this overwhelming emotional experience and decided to dedicate her work to helping families in similar situations. Nicole always makes the effort to personally meet with all the families she works with. She takes the time to display all the available assisted living options, ensuring your loved one’s comfort in the perfect living situation.

Nipomo dentist answers ‘Is teeth-whitening right for me?’

Porcelain veneers, crowns and bridges are also used for brightening a smile. Veneers are an option for teeth that are too heavily discolored. Crowns or bridges are an option when teeth are too thin to support the veneer.

In-office whitening procedures can take 60 to 90 minutes.

  • Before starting the dentist records the current shade of your teeth and then polishes them with a pumice to remove surface plaque.
  • Gauze is used to keep your teeth dry, and cheeks, lips and tongue may be retracted to keep them away from the whitening solution. Gums are protected with a gumline barrier.
  • The teeth are coated with a safe bleaching solution consisting of either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. A curing light or laser might also be used.
  • The solution remains on for 30 to 60 minutes then rinsed off once the desired shade is reached.

“Unless your dentist sends you home with the professional whitening trays,” says the Nipomo dentist, “additional visits may be scheduled until the desired shade is reached.”

Most patients are satisfied with one treatment. If teeth are deeply stained from smoking or some prescription medications, more than one treatment might be necessary.

Professional at-home kits are available from the dentist and many patients choose this option for additional whitening treatments.

Teeth-whitening procedures are safe for kids, but first, consult with your dentist. There are many reasons for children’s teeth to seem discolored. Sometimes the discoloration is natural such as new permanent teeth being a different shade than baby teeth. Diet can also influence the brightness of children’s teeth just as it does for adults.

The dentist may recommend home remedies instead of professional whitening, such as brushing with baking soda or eating more fruits and vegetables.

There are several OTC treatments available such as:

  • Brushing with whitening toothpaste.
  • Bleaching strips.
  • Bleaching pens.
  • Bleaching foam.
  • Whitening kits.

The OTC treatments might deliver satisfactory results for those with minor discoloration, but the bleaching formulas are not as strong, and this means that some people may not get the desired results.

Even though the bleaching solutions in strips, pens, foam and kits are milder than a dentist uses, there is the possibility of oral irritation from overuse if the directions are not followed. The inside of the mouth, gums, tongue and inner cheeks are sensitive and can be easily irritated, which can lead to infection or other issues.

Whitening toothpaste is formulated for frequent use but it’s still important to follow the directions on the package.

“The best person to answer your questions about OTC treatments is your dentist,” says the Nipomo dentist, “is your dentist.

Everyone deserves a confident, attractive, healthy, and whiter smile. Entrust the professionals at Nipomo Family Dentistry to take care of all of your dental care needs. A full-service dental office, Dr. Douglas Ng and his staff take care of everything from routine cleaning, examinations, fillings and other dental care to advanced care.

Everyone, from children to senior citizens, receives the best care and up-to-date procedures based on state-of-the-art dental science research.

MotherToBaby Launches Spanish-Language Digital Health Website to Reach Underserved Latinx Communities in the U.S. & Canada

“It’s our experience that all parents and parents-to-be want the best information possible in order to have a healthy baby,” said Lorrie Harris-Sagaribay, MPH, a bilingual teratogen information specialist and the MotherToBaby President-Elect. “No matter what the language they speak is, we want everyone to have access to the best, expert health information possible. Making our free resources available in the second most-used language in the U.S. will help us reach many who are currently underserved.”

MotherToBaby, a no-cost service of the international non-profit Organization of Teratology Information Specialists (OTIS), has been available to the public for more than 30 years. During that time, it has become the leader in birth defects research as well as answering questions the public has about exposures, like medications, vaccines, beauty products, herbal supplements, workplace exposures and much more, during pregnancy and breastfeeding. MotherToBaby is a suggested resource by many federal agencies including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The fully bilingual website comes on the heels of other Spanish resources previously available including more than 300 fact sheets, a phone information service (866-626-6847), texting line (855-999-3525), and live chat and email (available on MotherToBaby.org). Just some of the website updates include one-stop resource hubs organized by exposure topic and health field, a FREE online materials ordering system for patient education and materials, and fully translated information about the research arm of the organization, MotherToBaby Pregnancy Studies. Much of the information that the scientific community knows about medication and vaccine use during pregnancy comes from observational studies. With accessible information about study participation in Spanish, MotherToBaby is aiming to increase participant diversity and better reflect the community that may need to take these drugs to treat or prevent illness.

“The risk to the developing baby from certain exposures during a pregnancy can vary greatly depending on timing of the exposure and much more,” said Harris-Sagaribay. “To be able to provide information tailored to a pregnant person’s personal circumstance allows for better informed decision-making. I’m proud to be part of a service that empowers parents like that not only in English but also in Spanish.”

The Spanish-language website is just one of MotherToBaby’s latest effort in making health education information more accessible to people outside of native English speakers. MotherToBaby is exploring the expansion of its bilingual resources to make them available in more languages. For example, it recently made its COVID-19 mRNA Vaccines fact sheet available in Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, Tagalog and Vietnamese.

Visit the new Spanish-language website at MotherToBaby.org/es. The MotherToBaby website is not intended to be a substitute for professional judgment. Users should consult personal healthcare providers for pregnancy and breastfeeding advice related to their particular situation.

AHN Wexford Hospital and AHN Westmoreland Recognized with Patient Experience Award from Press Ganey

Following AHN Wexford Hospital’s opening just over two years ago, this most recent recognition marks the second year consecutively that the hospital’s emergency department has received the Guardian of Excellence Award. In addition to its emergency care, the hospital’s inpatient care is also acclaimed as part of the 2023 award. It is the only full-service hospital in the region to be recognized for both inpatient and emergency care.

Located north of Pittsburgh in Pine Twp., AHN Wexford Hospital includes 158 inpatient beds and a 24-bed emergency department which is capable of caring for both adult and pediatric patients. Its emergency department boasts some of the shortest wait times nationally with most patients seen by a clinician within 15 minutes of arriving at the hospital, on average.

AHN Wexford announced last September an expansion of pediatric services and capabilities including inpatient care for children with acute medical conditions, as well as orthopaedic and ear, nose and throat (ENT) conditions. This expansion has provided the region’s families with a high-quality, close-to-home option when their child requires emergent and/or overnight medical care.

AHN Outpatient Center—Westmoreland, located on Nature Park Road in Hempfield Township, is a 23,000-square-foot multispecialty facility that is host to a range of primary, specialty and outpatient care services. Its state-of-the-art endoscopy center is equipped with the latest technologies for the most effective screening and treatment for disorders of the digestive system. It is the third time consecutively for the AHN Westmoreland Endoscopy Center to receive the Guardian of Excellence Award.

“We congratulate the outstanding caregivers and staff at AHN Wexford and AHN Westmoreland for once again receiving this much deserved recognition. Their exceptional patient care sets great examples for our programs and facilities across the network, and for health systems across our region,” said Eugene Scioscia, MD, AHN chief experience officer and Barb Bobula, MSMOE, CPXP, AHN vice president of patient experience.

Each AHN hospital and outpatient facility employs designated patient experience representatives who serve as intermediaries between patients and staff, celebrating positive feedback while identifying opportunities to improve performance. Through education and training, these patient experience representatives support their colleagues as they strive to create an experience for all AHN patients that not only meets but exceeds their expectations.

“In prioritizing the wellbeing of both their patients and dedicated staff on a daily basis, AHN Wexford Hospital and the AHN Westmoreland Endoscopy Center exemplify dedication to their workforce and the communities they impact,” said Patrick T. Ryan, CEO and chairman at Press Ganey. “We applaud them for their compassion, empathetic approach, and the genuine human connections they forge within the clinical health care landscape. It’s a privilege for us to collaborate with them as we applaud their remarkable accomplishments.”
