AltaPointe’s Mental Health Professionals Want to Help You Cope with Disaster

We are in the peak of the 2019 Hurricane season. Living along the Gulf Coast, we are no stranger to natural disasters. We are all well-rehearsed in what it takes to prepare for say a hurricane. What we might struggle with is how to handle life following a disaster or traumatic event, which can pose tremendous psychological risks to our mental health.

Following a natural disaster, it is natural to experience an array of emotions, such as shock, frustration, and sadness. You may experience nightmares and reoccurring thoughts about the events, or you may not be able to sleep at all. A loss of appetite is normal, and so is overeating. These reactions can have an impact on our physical and mental well-being.

Thankfully, there are steps we can take to better cope with disaster or trauma lessening the psychosomatic impacts.

  • Talk about what happened. By talking with others about the event, you can relieve stress and realize that others may share your feelings.
  • Avoid overexposure to images of the event. Watching or reading news about the event over and over again will only increase your stress.
  • Find time for activities you enjoy. Read a book, go for a walk, or do something else you find enjoyable. These healthy activities can help you get your mind off the disaster and keep the stress in check.
  • Take one thing at a time. Pick one urgent task and work on it. Once you accomplish that task, choose the next one. “Checking off” tasks will give you a sense of accomplishment and make things feel less overwhelming.
  • Ask for help. If your feelings do not go away or are so intense that they interfere with your ability to function in daily life, make an appointment with a mental health professional. Do not try to cope alone. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness.

If you find you need help coping following a natural disaster or another traumatic event AltaPointe Health wants to help. AltaPointe has 17 outpatient locations across seven-counties in Alabama. For more information, call (251) 450-2211 or (888) 335-3044.

RSSearch® Patient Registry Surpasses 25,000 Patient Cases Using Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy/Stereotactic Radiosurgery

Our Logo

“The RSSearch Registry is a gold mine of data, diligently gathered by dedicated providers across the globe, to provide valuable insight into real-world outcomes of SRS/SBRT treatments. This is exemplified by the significant outcome studies published from this data,” stated Anand Mahadevan, MD.

The Radiosurgery Society (RSS), a non-profit organization of medical professionals dedicated to advancing the science and clinical practice of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) and radiosurgery (SRS), announced today that its RSSearch® Patient Registry has surpassed 25,000 patient cases treated with SRS/SBRT. The breadth of patient data entered into the multi-institutional registry makes it by far the largest and most robust live database of its kind in the field of SRS/SBRT managed by a professional medical society.

“The RSSearch Registry is a gold mine of data, diligently gathered by dedicated providers across the globe, to provide valuable insight into real-world outcomes of SRS/SBRT treatments. This is exemplified by the significant outcome studies published from this data. For instance, our paper “Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy for Liver Metastasis” has been reported as one of the top 3 most cited articles by the Journal of Radiation Oncology since 2018, providing useful data for patients and providers on the usefulness of SBRT in difficult situations,” stated Anand Mahadevan, MD, Professor and Chairman, Radiation Oncology at Geisinger Health, Geisinger Cancer Institute, Danville, PA.

The RSSearch Patient Registry is an observational registry established to standardize data collection from patients treated with SRS/SBRT. It was initially conceptualized and designed in 2005 by a Clinical Advisory Board comprised of radiation oncologists, neurosurgeons, medical oncologists and medical physicists to provide a method to collect standardized data on the use of SRS/SBRT treatment practices and outcomes to help determine the most effective clinical use of SRS/SBRT.

“Having a comprehensive resource such as RSSearch, which includes both clinical and radiation planning data points has enabled our faculty and residents work on several projects some of which have yielded very interesting findings,” commented Madhur Garg, MD, Clinical Director of Radiation Oncology, Director of Montefiore-Einstein’s Proton Therapy Program and Co-Director of Stereotactic Radiation Therapy Program at Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, NY.

Data from the RSSearch Patient Registry has fueled 15 publications to date, including a recent publication by Raj Singh et al in the July 2019 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Oncology titled, “Clinical Outcomes Following Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) for Stage I Medically-Inoperable Small-Cell Lung Carcinoma: A Multi-Institutional Analysis from the RSSearch Patient Registry.”

“The RSSearch® Patient Registry has enabled Sir Charles Gairdner hospital to collect clinical data for SRS/SBRT patients treated at our facility in Australia and has allowed clinicians and research staff to analyse patient and treatment data and to link this with patient-reported outcomes and treatment results. We have already examined our experience treating patients with localised prostate cancer and have published results. Participating in the Registry has also provided the opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of our local patient management practices and helped us develop data-driven treatment guidelines. The process has been a huge help in working towards prospective clinical trials,” stated Tammy Corica, PhD, Clinical Trials Manager, Radiation Oncology Clinical Trials & Research Unit, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Nedlands, Australia.

The RSSearch database collects information including patient demographics, lesion characteristics, treatment practices and outcome information including local control, disease progression, survival, toxicity and patient-reported quality of life information. Aggregate data analysis has resulted in several publications on clinical outcomes for radiosurgery treatment of lung tumors, liver metastases, metastatic brain tumors, recurrent head and neck cancer and prostate cancer.

The RSSearch Registry is managed by the RSS and the RSSearch Clinical Advisory Committee, made up of professionals involved in the management and care of patients treated with SRS/SBRT. The registry currently has 26 active sites and more than 80 trained users. Participation in the registry is voluntary and all centers treating patients with SRS/SBRT clinically are encouraged to participate. RSSearch is listed on ClinicalTrials.gov (Identifier (NCT number): NCT01885299).

Interested centers should contact Jan Jenkins, RN, Clinical Program Manager at the Radiosurgery Society at jjenkins@therss.org.

Connecticut, Florida and Bahamian Small Businesses Working to Donate Over 1,000 of Bottles of Insect Repellent to Hurricane Dorian Victims

“Repellents are just one of the many needs after a hurricane, and can often be overlooked,” said Fuentes. “By making repellents available, residents and aide-workers can stay safe and protected from insect bites and so they may focus on rebuilding their communities.”

In the wake of the devastation to Abaco and Grand Bahama from Hurricane Dorian, Ranger Ready Repellents, located in Norwalk, Connecticut, is working with Air Esscentials, located in Miami, Florida, to send 1,000 of bottles of mosquito and insect repellent to the area to protect residents and aide-workers from mosquito-borne illness and disease.

“Excessive amounts of standing water after hurricanes creates breeding grounds for mosquitos that cause disease 10-14 days after the disaster,” said Ranger Ready founder and CEO, Chris L. Fuentes. “With flooding as a result of Hurricane Dorian, there are likely to be millions of mosquitos affecting residents over the next months.”

“For us this is not about business. It is about helping people that need it,” said Spence Levy, president of Air Esscentials, who has spent his entire life traveling to the Bahamas. Air Esscentials, which provides environmental scent delivery systems, is delivering the donation – along with many other donations – to a Bahamian small business owner, who will then fly donations to Nassau, before transporting to the islands by boats. And because of pirates and looters, said Levy, it is necessary for the boats to be escorted to the islands by the U.S. Coast Guard.

“Repellents are just one of the many needs after a hurricane, and can often be overlooked,” said Fuentes. “By making repellents available, residents and aide-workers can stay safe and protected from insect bites and so they may focus on rebuilding their communities.”

Each of the 1,000 Ranger Ready bottles can protect an entire family of four for a week or more. Ranger Ready uses the active ingredient picaridin, which prevents mosquito bites for 12 hours. It’s safe for children over age-1 and women who are pregnant and breastfeeding.

Cancer Studies at World Molecular Imaging Society Annual Congress Bring New Research to the Forefront

The recent World Molecular Imaging Society (WMIS) annual congress in Montreal provided a plethora of breakthrough research studies including several cancer related presentations. Three of the studies highlighted presentations on Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect breast cancer, response prediction of cancer immunotherapies and whole body, real-time tracking of single cells.

The principle purpose of the study, Sensitivity and Specificity of a Machine Learning Artificial Intelligence System Trained to Detect Breast Cancer, was to investigate the ability of a convolutional neural network (CNN) to discriminate and classify between tissue types. The study was presented by Jeffrey Leal, Ph.D., research associate, Johns Hopkins University.

“We hypothesized that a unique tissue signature can be used to classify hypermetabolic tissue types, normal as well as disease, employing AI systems using deep learning based CNN,” said Dr. Leal. “In addition, we believed AI could be used to automate such tissue identification and classification with a high degree of sensitivity and specificity.”

Fifty-three baseline PET/CT studies from a multi-institutional study of breast cancer were used to train an AI system based on semantic segmentation. Images were processed using in-house, semi-automated software to generate voxel classification maps of all voxels within the study volume. The trained neural network demonstrated a global accuracy of 98.3 percent detecting 16 tissue class categories. The weighted Intersection of Union (IoU), a ratio of voxels correctly classified, was 97.2%, and the Mean Boundary F1 score (a measure of boundary accuracy) was 85.4percent. For individual tissue types, accuracy rates ranged between 76.7% and 100 percent. Review of the resulting auto-classified image sets allowed visual confirmation of the accuracy of the tissue detection, while also highlighting areas requiring further refinement by the evidence of noise and boundary discordance.

“The high-level of performance achieved by this CNN leads us to believe these systems can detect tracer-based tissue signatures, which provide a depth of signal analysis potentially beyond the ability of our classical first-order tools,” said Dr. Leal. “We believe this may provide a whole new dimension in our approach to the use and interpretation of molecular imaging in the future, providing insights into personalized therapy strategies, diagnosis and prognosis which heretofore eluded us.”

Another cancer study explored immunotherapies involving checkpoint inhibitors and T-cell transfer. ImmunoPET of the Early Activation Antigen CD69 Enables Response Prediction of Cancer Immunotherapies was presented by Bredi Tako, medical student, Werner Siemens Imaging Center, University of Tübingen.

Most cancer immunotherapies, such as immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI), are based on the reinvigoration of antitumoral T-cell responses and have been implemented as standard of care in various cancers. T-cells express a high amount of the early activation antigen CD69 upon stimulation, which makes it an excellent candidate to monitor immune responses by molecular imaging. The aim of this study was to develop an antibody based immunoPET tracer targeting CD69 and to evaluate its potential use as a novel imaging tool to monitor T-cell activation and responses to ICI therapies.

“The purpose of this study was to establish a novel tracer for positron emission tomography (PET) that can be used for imaging of immune cell activation following immunotherapy,” said Mr. Tako. “To this end, we developed an antibody-based imaging method that targets the early activation antigen CD69 and applied it to murine tumor models that respond differently to immune checkpoint inhibitor therapies.”

According to Mr. Tako, the research indicated that ImmunoPET imaging of CD69 is a reliable method to distinguish responders from non-responders following immunotherapy for cancer treatment as early as three days after therapy initiation.

Early response evaluation by non-invasive imaging allows for a quick therapy modification, which can increase the therapeutic efficiency and outcome of many cancer patients. Since immune cell activation also plays a role in many other diseases, such as autoimmune diseases, non-invasive imaging might also be beneficial in diagnosing and improving treatments for these patients as well.

With the progress in cell-based therapies, molecular imaging methods are increasingly being used for in vivo cell-tracking applications. In the research In Vivo Real-Time Tracking of Single Cells in Whole-Body PET/CT, Kyungoh Jung, Ph,D., postdoctoral research fellow, Stanford University, spoke about the sensitivity of PET to track the migration of single cells in mice, in real-time and at the whole-body level.

“The purpose of the study was to demonstrate that PET can track much smaller cell populations, down to single cells,” said Dr. Jung. “Using nanoparticles to efficiently ferry radioactivity into cells, hardware optimizations, and a novel cell tracking algorithm, this study demonstrated real-time tracking of single cancer cell metastasizing hematogenously to the lungs.”

Dr. Jung believes this system could be used for understanding circulating tumor cells and cell clusters, to investigate biological processes such as cancer development and the early stages of the metastatic cascade. Furthermore, cell-tracking could be used to determine the pattern and kinetics of immune cell mobilization in response to an injury. Finally, the method may find use in clinical trials of cell-based therapies for cancer immunotherapy and regenerative medicine.

“In vivo molecular imaging tools are critically important to understand the role of cell trafficking in physiological and pathological processes,” Dr. Jung concluded.

“Metastasis, for instance, is the single most important factor for predicting cancer survival, and targeting the metastatic cascade could significantly improve clinical outcomes. This cell-tracking methodology could be applied to develop better therapies against cancer metastasis or to monitor early cell trafficking behavior in clinical trials of cell-based therapies.”

Children’s Tumor Foundation Hosts NF Innovation Week in San Francisco

News Image

Significantly, NF research has application towards cancer research (the NF gene in particular), and the CTF strategic model has application towards other disease areas, including cancer.

Neurofibromatosis (NF), a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body and which affects 1 in 3,000 people – that’s over 2.5 million worldwide – has no cure and few workable treatment options. But new research is offering novel insights into the disease and generating enthusiasm that effective therapeutics are on the horizon to benefit those living with NF.

The Children’s Tumor Foundation, the nonprofit global leader in NF research, is harnessing this revitalized interest in rare disease research through a series of events being held in San Francisco, called NF Innovation Week. These events are:

  • NF Hackathon: data scientists, artificial intelligence experts, and engineers – mostly new to the NF field – will gather at the Google Launchpad for three intensive days (Sep 13-15) to ‘hack’ genomic, research, and imaging/clinical data from the NF Data Portal, and bring their unique insights and experiences to help accelerate NF medical research. This event merges the fields of genomic medicine, computer science, statistics, and bioinfomatics, and the winners of the hackathon will present their findings at the NF Conference, the world’s largest conference of NF experts (details below).
  • NF Forum: patients, families, and caregivers will convene for two days (Sep 20-21) to hear about promising research, meet with world-class NF experts, and participate in patient advocacy sessions. All forms of neurofibromatosis will be covered – NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis, as well as quality of life issues for the myriad manifestations of NF, which can cause deafness, blindness, bone abnormalities, learning disabilities, disabling pain, and cancer.
  • NF Conference: this four-day global meeting (Sep 21-24) attracts leading specialists from across a wide range of scientific disciplines and research and clinical backgrounds, all focused on improving outcomes for patients. This annual event is the most important date on the NF research calendar, and is critical to consensus building and advancing basic, translational, and clinical research in NF and related fields.

Among the key advances to be presented at the NF Conference are:

  • revised diagnostic criteria for all forms of neurofibromatosis, including a potential name change for NF2
  • natural history studies that are increasing knowledge of NF and improving treatment options
  • gene editing and gene therapy options in NF
  • the role of NF genes in predicting, preventing and curing cancer
  • innovative animal models, including pig models designed and funded by CTF

The Children’s Tumor Foundation’s strategic approach is centered around two key principles: discovery and acceleration. The discovery focus is geared towards increasing our knowledge of the underlying mechanisms of NF, in order to develop more targeted therapeutics and to decrease risk for patients. This is done through the Foundation’s Young Investigator Awards, Drug Discovery Initiative, and Clinical Research Awards, among others. The Foundation’s acceleration approach is geared towards breaking down barriers through a collaborative approach, open source data, and an NF platform that attracts pharma and biotech to the NF space, and helps ‘de-risks’ research about a somewhat still relatively not-well-known disease. This is done through the Foundation’s Synodos research teams, the NF Data Portal, NF Registry, and NF Platform, among others.

Significantly, NF research has application towards cancer research (the NF gene in particular), and the CTF strategic model has application towards other disease areas, including cancer. These principles and ideas (and results) will all be on display throughout the week. Even more unique, with patients coming into town for the NF Forum, they will also participate at the science events (NF Hackathon and NF Conference). Much as the patient forum is ‘bookended’ by each of the science meetings this week, patients are at the center of all of these events.

Information about all Innovation Week events is available on the Children’s Tumor Foundation website at http://www.ctf.org

ABOUT THE CHILDREN’S TUMOR FOUNDATION:

The Children’s Tumor Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to funding and driving innovative research that will result in effective treatments for the millions of people worldwide living with neurofibromatosis (NF), a term for three distinct disorders: NF1, NF2, and schwannomatosis. NF causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body and may lead to blindness, deafness, bone abnormalities, disfigurement, learning disabilities, disabling pain, and cancer. NF affects 1 in every 3,000 births across all populations equally. There is no cure yet – but the Children’s Tumor Foundation mission of driving research, expanding knowledge, and advancing care for the NF community fosters our vision of one day ending NF. Cosmetic Town, a Los Angeles-based online plastic surgery and information community, is spotlighting the best cosmetic skin rejuvenation doctors in New York currently providing patients with natural and youthful looking results on areas of the skin that have been impacted by the aging process. Cosmetic Town makes the process of finding information about these board-certified doctors in the New York area easier than ever by publishing a list of the “Best Cosmetic Skin Rejuvenation Doctors in New York in 2019”.

According to the senior editor of Cosmetic Town, “As people start to get older, they will see areas of the skin start to lose volume as well as gain wrinkles and fine lines that are easily visible by others. Thankfully, there are methods such as fillers, chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing that can improve the look of the skin and give it an appearance that is refreshed and rejuvenated. Patients get a more youthful look that also improves their self-image and makes them more confident in their appearance.”

The senior editor stated that cosmetic skin rejuvenation can be performed through the use of a number of techniques and the results vary per person. “One important thing to remember about cosmetic skin rejuvenation techniques like Botox and fillers and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is that the results are not permanent. Since these are not invasive surgical procedures, the results will only last a certain amount of time. Patients will need to undergo additional treatments to maintain their results. We make sure to include the expected results with our spotlighted procedures so patients will have realistic expectations before undergoing a cosmetic skin rejuvenation treatment.”

When choosing the best cosmetic skin rejuvenation doctors for the New York list, the senior editor said the decision was made using the Cosmetic Town intelligent system. “Our research staff makes use of an intelligent algorithm that is focused on cosmetic surgery. The Cosmetic Town research team takes an in-depth look at the skill level of the cosmetic doctors and also looks at the amount of patient education the doctors perform on a regular basis. In addition, our team looks at the overall satisfaction level patients feel towards their doctor as well as the number of articles the doctors write on a regular basis to share with their peers. The doctors that make the final list are picked using the above guidelines and they do not provide any type of compensation to make the list.”

With formulas fortified by diamond powder, these products give skin the illusion of a filtered, soft-focus finish you’ll love.

“The inspiration behind this collection was a play on our brand DNA…being crystal clear about our ingredients,” said Tisha Thompson, Vice President of Marketing and Innovation at PUR. “We’ve always remained that you can have high-performance products that inspire and fuel your creative side without harming the integrity of the skin and this collection is no exception!
