Yoga Science Provides a New Perspective to Help Physicians Relieve Burnout while Changing the Medical Culture

https://www.prweb.com/

Gustavo Grodnitzky PhD and CME Conference presenter on “Culture Trumps Everything”

“When you change the way you see the world, the world you see changes.” Gustavo Grodnitzky PhD

Gustavo Grodnitzky, PhD will join the faculty of The American Meditation Institute (AMI) for a 31 credit CME conference on Yoga Science as holistic mind/body medicine for physicians and other health care professionals. Entitled The Heart and Science of Yoga this comprehensive training being held October 22-26, 2019 at the Cranwell Resort and Spa in Lenox, Massachusetts, is accredited by the Albany Medical College and the American Medical Association, and is designed to help relieve physician stress and burnout.

Gustavo Grodnitzky, PhD is a noted speaker, author, consultant, psychologist, and Chair of the AMI Psychological Education Committee. After obtaining his Ph.D. in clinical and school psychology from Hofstra University, he completed post-doctorate degrees in both cognitive therapy and forensic psychology.

Dr. Grodnitzky’s participation at this year’s CME conference will include a thought-provoking lecture that explores how the power of culture impacts physician perspective and resilience. With a higher understanding of how the general culture and medical culture affect our thoughts and actions, physicians will be able to apply simple yogic principles and practices in their everyday lives to help relieve burnout. According to Grodnitzky, “If we want to ensure the best possible outcomes for ourselves and our profession, we must focus on developing the cultures that foster success for all stakeholders, because . . . culture trumps everything.”

Now in its eleventh year of providing physicians continuing medical education credits, this unique holistic mind/body medicine conference will present an in-depth study of the historical, philosophical, and scientific nature of Yoga Science. Practical yogic skills will be taught to all attendees to expand their knowledge of and experience with health-affirming, yogic practices.

The entire “Heart and Science of Yoga” CME curriculum is a transformative learning experience. It is dedicated to providing quality, comprehensive, and evidence-based education. Topics this year will include a comprehensive overview and instruction on AMI Meditation, Epigenetics, diaphragmatic breathing, mantra science, yoga psychology, mind function optimization, food as medicine, Ayurveda, easy-gentle yoga, lymph system detoxification, and detailed instruction on how to use the chakra system as a diagnostic tool.

The dedication, enthusiasm, and teaching methodology of the entire AMI faculty create a dynamic and interactive course for their students. Each faculty member is committed to the advancement and training of Yoga Science as holistic mind/body medicine. In addition to Dr. Grodnitzky, this year’s faculty also includes AMI founder Leonard Perlmutter; Dr. Robert Schneider MD, Dean of the College of Integrative Medicine and Director of the Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention at Maharishi University; Anthony Santilli MD, board certified in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine; Sat Bir Singh Khalsa, PhD, Director of Research for the Kundalini Research Institute, and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School; Renee Rodriguez-Goodemote, MD, Medical Director of the Saratoga Hospital Community Health Center; Susan Lord MD, a private practice holistic physician focusing on prevention and treatment, and former course director for the Center for Mind-Body Medicine’s “Food As Medicine” program in Washington, DC; Jesse Ritvo MD, Assistant Medical Director, Inpatient Psychiatry, University of Vermont Health Center; Joshua Zamer, MD, Medical Director for Addiction Medicine at Saratoga Hospital Community Health Center and Chairman of the Department of Family Practice; Anita Burock-Stotts, MD, board certified in Internal Medicine; Kristin Kaelber MD, PhD, board certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics; Janine Pardo MD, board certified in Internal Medicine; Gustavo Grodnitzky PhD, Chair of the AMI Psychological Education Committee; Jenness Cortez Perlmutter, faculty member of The American Meditation Institute, and Lee Albert, NMT, acclaimed neuromuscular therapist and gentle yoga instructor.

According to Joel M. Kremer, MD, who is board certified in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology in Albany, New York and a recent AMI conference participant, “This teaching has been an enormous benefit in my personal and professional life. I have less stress, more focus, and am able to serve my patients with greater clarity. It becomes surprisingly easy now to recognize the many clinical situations in which patients with somatic manifestations of ‘dis-ease’ could greatly benefit from Yoga Science.”

Numerous medical pioneers and healthcare professionals such as Dean Ornish MD, Mehmet Oz MD, Larry Dossey MD, and Bernie Siegel MD have also endorsed AMI’s core curriculum.

San Luis Obispo Dentist, Dr. Douglas Ng, Releases ‘Warm Weather Treats That Are Good For Your Teeth’

Dentist San Luis Obispo

Berries are healthy treats alternatives to sugary treats.

Some of the most common beverages consumed by Americans are loaded with sugar, including those we think of as “healthy” such as juice.

Summer is a time for barbecues, parties and picnics and lots of delicious food and drink, but not all of it is good for our teeth and gums. Dr. Douglas Ng, family dentist in San Luis Obispo has some tips for healthy alternatives to sugary summer treats.

Warm weather is the time for ice cream, and popsicles and ice-filled cold drinks to go along with the hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob and watermelon. But, the American Dental Association (ADA) reports that, no matter how refreshing, the consumption of sugar-filled sodas, iced tea, and other treats is not good for our teeth and oral health.

Some of the most common beverages consumed by Americans are loaded with sugar, including those we think of as “healthy” such as juice. The ADA reports a United States Department of Agriculture stated that “sugar should make up no more than 10%” of daily calories, or fewer than the equivalent of 18 teaspoons per day, depending on whether you are an adult man or woman, or a child. A single glass of apple juice contains close to the adult daily allocation of sugar. Children should not consume more than the equivalent of six teaspoons per day.

Don’t despair! There are many low to no-sugar foods and beverages that are going to make summer meals and treats as tasty and appealing as ever. Dr. Ng has prepared the following list to help parents and party hosts make better decisions.

  • Add crunch to the menu with slices of apples, pears, cucumbers, celery, and carrots instead of bowls of potato chips. Potato chips might not contain sugar but they do collect between the teeth, inviting cavity-causing bacteria to attack teeth and gums. Crunch fresh fruit and vegetables are like natural toothbrushes scrubbing the teeth and stimulating saliva.
  • Cheese! Dairy products like cheese, milk and yogurt are naturally low in sugar and rich in calcium and phosphorus for strengthening tooth enamel. Cheese, especially when served with crunchy fruit and vegetables give our mouths a healthy boost.
  • Read labels and choose low sugar or sugar-free ice cream and desserts. Or, make your own frozen desserts with sugar-free yogurt and fresh fruit.
  • Watch for traditional picnic and barbecue foods that contain sugar, such as baked beans and sauces. Make your own and cut down on the amount of sugar, or shop for sugar-free varieties.
  • Serve sparkling water —even flavor-infused sparkling waters have less sugar than sodas. Make ice tea without sugar and let guests sweeten to taste. Do some research to find recipes for sugar-free summer beverages.

Being watchful about sugar intake does not mean no one can have a good time. Good company and good healthy food are always the recipe for fun and companionship. Dr. Ng is always happy to help patients make dietary choices that promote dental health. And, remember to brush and floss daily.

Intalere’s Illuminated Path Podcast Series Latest Episode Focuses on Traceability and Transparency of the Healthcare Supply Chain

Intalere, the healthcare industry leader in delivering optimal cost, quality and clinical outcomes, today announced the release of Episode 10 of its Illuminated Path Podcast Series, examining the need for more Traceability and Transparency in the Supply Chain with Intalere Chief Commercial Officer and AHRMM 2020 Board Chair Elect Steve Kiewiet.

In the episode, Kiewiet shared insight on how healthcare is undergoing a change of primary focus from B2B (hospital to payor) to B2C and how consumerism will only increase and require health systems to truly build their service delivery models around the needs and desires of the patient and the family. “The ability to effectively access data, correlate the information to other sources of data, validate the accuracy, and transform it all into meaningful, actionable evidence for clinicians, administration, finance, supply chain, patients and the community is a significant gap in the industry today,” he said.

According to Kiewiet, world class supply chain organizations can drive organizational strategy and have the people, process and technology to play the lead facilitation role in all non-labor resource management. “The organizations that recognize this and relentlessly pursue data-driven decisions on variation reduction, process improvement, cost management, relationship management and resource management – will be the organizations that thrive in the new healthcare economy,” he said.

The technology automates the entire episode experience and offers robust workflow along with ‘high tech and high touch’ consumer interactions. “Spoke Health’s platform helps health systems, TPAs, payers and other benefits providers package and automate value-based programs at scale for their employer clients. The solution includes three main capabilities: robust digital consumer tools, care and concierge workflow and dashboards, and provider contract administration capabilities that efficiently display and manage componentized costs for bundled contracts ,” said Greg Mogab, Spoke Health’s co-founder and Chief Technology Officer. “We wake up every day highly motivated to build powerful, easy-to-use SaaS technology that takes the hassle out of the US healthcare system and creates great consumer experiences even during a stressful care event.”

Mario Lemieux Foundation, Highmark Health Establish Research Fund in the Division of Cardiac Electrophysiology at Allegheny Health Network

“Our Foundation is committed to supporting important research and patient care, and we are pleased to give this gift that will help so many people in our community,” said Lemieux.

Commitment of $2 million aims to advance leading-edge care for patients with atrial fibrillation and other heart rhythm disorders

PITTSBURGH, Pa (September 16, 2019) – Representatives from the Mario Lemieux Foundation today joined Highmark Health and Allegheny Health Network (AHN) officials to announce a major investment in the health of patients with heart rhythm disorders. A $1 million gift from the Mario Lemieux Foundation, with matching funds from Highmark Health, will establish The Mario Lemieux Innovation and Research Fund in the Division of Cardiac Electrophysiology (EP) at AHN’s Cardiovascular Institute.

The $2 million investment by the Foundation and Highmark Health will support medical research and the development of innovative therapies and technologies for heart rhythm disorders, a cause close to the heart of Mario Lemieux, Foundation chairman, NHL Hall of Famer and Pittsburgh Penguins owner.

“Our Foundation is committed to supporting important research and patient care, and we are pleased to give this gift that will help so many people in our community,” said Lemieux.

Lemieux was diagnosed with a heart rhythm disorder called atrial fibrillation (Afib) in 2005 and guides his foundation by supporting important patient care and research in the region. The Foundation’s gift to AHN is its first to an adult cardiovascular program.

“Our mission is to create programs that improve the lives of western Pennsylvanians and to collaborate with organizations who share that commitment,” said Tom Grealish, president of the Mario Lemieux Foundation. “Allegheny Health Network’s Cardiovascular Institute is nationally recognized for its expertise in the treatment of heart and vascular disease, and we are excited to help further enhance its capabilities in the specialized care of heart rhythm disorders.”

In the United States, Afib is the most common heart rhythm disorder affecting more than six million people. The condition occurs when the two upper chambers of the heart quiver out of sync with the lower chambers causing less blood to be circulated throughout the body, elevating a patient’s risk of heart failure and stroke.

The funding from the Foundation and Highmark Health will help further establish AHN’s EP program as a center for innovative research into the cause and treatment of heart rhythm disorders with a particular focus on minimally invasive therapies for Afib. The funds will also support the use of advanced data systems to develop predictive algorithms that promote more efficient and effective care pathways for patients with cardiac arrhythmias.

“At Highmark Health, we take great pride in our legacy of service to the western Pennsylvania community and one of the key elements of our success through the years has been the many opportunities we have had to work with outstanding organizations like the Mario Lemieux Foundation to make our communities better, healthier places to live,” said David Holmberg, president and CEO of Highmark Health. “Together with the Foundation, we are extremely excited to establish the framework of a game changing program that will help mend and strengthen the hearts of our members and patients today, and well into the future.”

AHN’s flagship Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) is a leading referral center in Western Pennsylvania for advanced cardiovascular care and cardiovascular research, including clinical trials of new medications and technologies available only at the most specialized medical centers in the country. AHN’s community hospitals also have some of the best cardiovascular programs in the region with cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons who have led the way in transforming community-based cardiovascular care.

“We are immensely grateful to the Mario Lemieux Foundation and to Highmark Health for their generous support of our Cardiovascular Institute, their recognition of the quality and capabilities of our clinicians, their understanding of the importance of research and their confidence in our vision for transforming the treatment of heart rhythm disorders and other diseases of the heart and vascular system,” said Allie Quick, chief philanthropy officer at Allegheny Health Network.

AHN’s EP program has long been at the forefront of innovative techniques and technologies for treating heart rhythm disorders and similar heart conditions. Led by Amit Thosani, MD, director of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Division, the program was the first in the region to perform zero fluoroscopy ablation to treat Afib and other heart rhythm abnormalities, greatly improving the safety of a common procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to stabilize an irregular heartbeat. In collaboration with the Network’s advanced heart failure and cardiac surgery teams, the EP program was also a first in the region to perform mapping and ablation of ventricular tachycardia at the time of open heart surgery.

“As the U.S. population continues to age, the number of those diagnosed with atrial fibrillation is expected to increase to 12 million by 2030 so it’s important that our multidisciplinary cardiac teams continue to deliver treatments that improve outcomes and bring world-class care to our patients, close to home,” said Srinivas Murali, MD, chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Allegheny Health Network. “Thanks to the vision and generosity of organizations like the Mario Lemieux Foundation, our team can only further advance the development and implementation of more innovative diagnostic and minimally invasive solutions which benefit patients.”

Other faculty of the Division of Cardiac Electrophysiology who will play a role in work supported by fund include William Belden, MD, Chris Bonnet, MD, John Chenarides, MD, Mati Friehling, MD, Emerson Liu, MD, and George Shaw, MD.

“Exceptional clinical care and pioneering expertise in the study and treatment of complex cardiovascular diseases has been a hallmark of our Network, and its hospitals, for more than a century,” said George Magovern, MD, chair, AHN Cardiovascular Institute. “Patients with heart rhythm disorders in particular can be assured that the scope of resources available to them at Allegheny Health Network is second to none.”
