Race for Relapsing Polychondritis’ Drive for Awareness Makes a Stop in Marquette this Week for A Symposium Exploring Autoimmune Diseases

News Image

If you are one of the 50 million Americans who live with an autoimmune disease, you know that it can be challenging to get the answers you need. If you’re a medical professional, you know that educational resources about these diseases are limited. Whether it’s lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, relapsing polychondritis or one of the many other autoimmune diseases, not nearly enough is known about diagnosis and treatment.

NMU’s Doctor of Nursing Practice Program, in conjunction with the Race for RP (Relapsing Polychondritis) present A Symposium Exploring Autoimmune Diseases, Friday, September 20, at Reynolds Recital Hall. This half-day session is free and open to the public. Experts will discuss the latest research, treatments and best practices for those living with an autoimmune disease. If you or someone you know have been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, this is a rare opportunity to hear directly from leaders in the field. If you are a medical professional, you can earn continuing medical educational credits.

“One of our main priorities at Race for RP is to make sure those impacted by these diseases have access to the latest information and best practices. This collaboration with the School of Nursing at NMU is a perfect opportunity to team up and increase awareness,” said David Bammert, President of the RP Foundation. “Health care professionals, nursing students and community members who may be living with these diseases will be able to engage with autoimmune specialists directly,” he added.

Featured speakers include Dr. Susan Manzi, Chair of the Allegheny Health Network Medicine Institute and Chair of the Lupus Foundation of America National Board of Directors; Dr. Joseph M. Ahearn, Chair of the Allegheny Health Network Autoimmunity Institute; and Dr. Emily Somers, specialist in epidemiology at the University of Michigan Schools of Medicine and Public Health.

A Symposium Exploring Autoimmune Diseases takes place Friday, September 20, 12:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Reynolds Recital Hall at NMU. This event is free and open to the public. For additional information visit, http://www.bit.ly/AutoimmunitySymposium

New SEL Curriculum Directly Addresses the Key Skills for Student Emotional Regulation and Behavior Management

KidConnect Ready2Learn Curriculum logo

The new KidConnect Ready2Learn Curriculum helps teachers improve student behavior and proactively teach emotional regulation

We identified a gap in the current SEL market and designed the KidConnect Ready2Learn Curriculum to help educators teach emotional regulation, which equips students with the foundational skills, strategies, and behaviors appropriate for a variety of situations and environments.

The Connections Model has launched the KidConnect Ready2Learn Curriculum, a proactive social-emotional learning (SEL) program that helps teachers provide direct instruction on the essential skills students need for success in school and in life. Based on the latest brain research and the understanding that emotions drive behavior, the curriculum provides teachers with the tools to help learners identify, understand, and manage their emotions, which allows them to be in control of their behavior. The curriculum is for classroom instruction across grades K-6 and includes 26 lessons centered on targeted skills. Students learn to become their own emotional managers and teachers gain a classroom full of engaged and motivated students.

“As educators ourselves, we understand that teachers know better than anyone that when kids are able to manage their behavior, they become engaged and enthusiastic learners. With this in mind, our goal as a company is to give teachers the right curriculum, classroom tools, and professional development to support them in helping students build the foundational skills for success,” said Lori Jackson, applied educational psychologist and co-founder of The Connections Model. “Our tools are grounded in current research, easy for both teachers and students to use, and are focused on the key social-emotional skills that all learners truly need. This new SEL curriculum, combined with teachers’ unique instructional expertise, will help all students experience positive growth and classroom success.”

In launching the Ready2Learn Curriculum, The Connections Model builds upon its KidConnect Classroom App, with the combination of curriculum and app creating a comprehensive SEL delivery system that features both proactive instruction and in-the-moment intervention. The app, which is available for the iPad, gives teachers the ability to intervene with individual students in the moment of a behavioral incident caused by emotional dysregulation. Using the app, the student works through a series of screens to identify the emotion that caused the behavior, understand it better, and adopt positive strategies to get back on track and ready to learn. Importantly, the student-driven app keeps students in the classroom and they can complete the intervention without disrupting peers.

“The combination of the KidConnect Ready2Learn Curriculum with the KidConnect Classroom App is a game changer,” said Steve Peck, middle school special education teacher and co-founder of The Connections Model. “Special educators know how important modifications are to their students, but tools and resources that help students make the appropriate emotional and behavioral adjustments, without stifling their learning or disrupting their classmates, have traditionally been hard to find. The KidConnect integrated solution changes the paradigm for special educators and all teachers focused on improving students’ emotional regulation. We’ve done the legwork for educators by developing this comprehensive curriculum, so they can focus on teaching and feel confident they will meet the needs of all learners.”

The Ready2Learn Curriculum is designed to integrate into educators’ everyday classroom routines, so students not only learn new skills but can apply and practice them. It adds the element of regular SEL instruction for the entire class, with an emphasis on emotional skill-building to improve each student’s ability to manage emotions and behaviors. This skill set will lay the foundation for students to achieve both self-awareness and social awareness, build healthy relationships, and make good decisions.

Behavior management is a key goal of the entire KidConnect program. The positive skill-building approach ensures that it is never punitive and always focused on growth and equitable learning opportunities for all students. The curriculum divides the process of healthy emotional regulation into four navigable units that include:

  • Building an emotional vocabulary by defining 16 common emotions and helping students reflect on past experiences to identify when certain feelings emerged across a variety of situations.
  • Making connections between emotions and behaviors. Students begin to build self-awareness and social awareness by working through a variety of group activities to practice identifying and controlling their reactions.
  • Learning strategies to manage emotions and, in turn, drive more positive behaviors. Students work with each other through a variety of situations to identify off-target behaviors and provide tactics to move toward healthy, on-target actions.
  • Practicing a variety of strategies and mindfulness techniques to help regulate emotions, increase self-esteem, and develop coping mechanisms that will help students gain control of their emotions and drive healthy behaviors in any circumstance.

Each of the four units are comprised of a variety of interactive, easy-to-use lesson plans and activities that provide the scope and sequence of emotional regulation to showcase the fluid relationship between each unit. To help facilitate this learning process, the KidConnect Ready2Learn Curriculum also includes instructions and guiding questions for students to create an Emotional Journal, where they can begin to record connections between their daily schedule and activities, along with the associated emotions and behaviors that occurred.

“We identified a gap in the current SEL market and designed the KidConnect Ready2Learn Curriculum to help educators teach emotional regulation, which equips students with the foundational skills, strategies, and behaviors appropriate for a variety of situations and environments,” said Jackson. “We know that emotions drive behavior. Only when students learn to identify, understand, and manage their emotions, will they be truly engaged in school and Ready2Learn.”

The KidConnect Ready2Learn Curriculum addresses the fundamental skills for learning: the ability to be present and engaged. It enables all students, from high achievers to those with severe behavioral challenges, to develop the relevant social and emotional skills necessary for long-term success in the classroom and beyond. New Support Group for Parents after Death of Unborn or Newborn Child

News Image

Creating a support group is a good place to start a group to help others affected by this kind of loss.

September 2019 – The death of an unborn child is an experience no parent should have to endure. The shocking and unfortunate reality is this happens in 25 percent of pregnancies. Couples find various paths to coping and healing following their nightmare.

When JR and Jena Kushnir’s unborn daughter, Madison Claire, passed away due to an umbilical cord accident just days before her due date, Valentine’s Day in 2018, the couple cried, slipped into shock, put away the baby clothes and toys meant for their daughter and searched for solace and hope from professionals and families like themselves.

They also encouraged St. Luke’s University Hospital in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, where JR works in medical simulation, and where Madison Claire was delivered, to establish a support group for grieving parents. The hospital’s perinatal and infant loss resources did not include formal services for supporting parents who leave the hospital empty handed and broken hearted.

“We wanted to work with St. Luke’s to make positive changes in Madison’s memory,” JR said.

He sent the hospital president an email, saying, “Creating a support group is a good place to start a group to help others affected by this kind of loss.”

The president “called me that same day to express her sympathy and tell me that the hospital would form a group,” JR recalled. A social worker/therapist was hired to moderate the group, and just months later, the first meeting of the hospital’s Perinatal and Infant Loss Support Group convened in one of the conference rooms at the Anderson (Bethlehem Township) campus. The support group meets monthly.

The sharing and caring that takes place at their monthly meetings has brought the Kushnirs comfort and close to other couples and families that have suffered similar loss. Some of them come and talk the entire time, while others just sit and listen, JR says. “There’s not one way to grieve,” he says. “But helping others helped us to heal.”

So much so that they felt ready to try to start a family again. On May 29, 2019, Charlotte Rose, their “Rainbow Baby,” joined JR and Jena. “She was born at 37 weeks, and that was 37 weeks of anxiety,” says the proud dad of two.

“We soak up every second we can with Charlotte,” says JR. “We always tell her about how she was handpicked for Earth by her big sister, and that in her brief life, Madison made such positive changes.”

Bel Mondo Beauty Announces Sheet Mask For Oncology Spa Services

Finding the right sheet mask for my very special clients going through cancer treatment was extremely important to me.

Bel Mondo Beauty announced today the availability of a facial sheet mask tailored for skin care professionals who provide oncology spa services.

Developed in collaboration with Oncology Spa Solutions ® – a leader in oncology-care training for estheticians nationwide – Bel Mondo Beauty’s Moisture Renewal Mask is designed to help alleviate the extreme dryness and sensitivity associated with skin impacted by cancer-care treatments. The premium mask features Bel Mondo’s signature bio cellulose fabric, prized in medical aesthetics for its exceptional occlusive and hydrophilic properties.

Notably, Bel Mondo Beauty’s Moisture Renewal Mask is free from additives that potentially irritate compromised skin, including artificial fragrances, synthetic dyes, ethyl alcohols, paraben preservatives, silicon and petroleum-based surfactants, and mineral oils. The formula features six key active ingredients — Pentavitin, PRODEW 600, Green Caviar Sea Grape, Sodium Hyaluronate, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-5, and ECOCERT Chamomile – selected for their ability to replenish and attract moisture while calming skin.

Product Trails Conducted With 30 Oncology-Trained Estheticians

Prototypes of Bel Mondo’s Moisture Renewal Mask were evaluated by 30 oncology-trained estheticians, who tried the product directly and used it on clients who were undergoing or had recently completed cancer treatments. Eighty percent of those who evaluated the mask reported that it increased moisture levels and alleviated sensitivity significantly; zero instances of skin irritation were experienced.

Access to the estheticians who participated in the product evaluation was provided by Becky Kuehn, Founder and Director of Education of Oncology Spa Solutions. A Licensed Master Esthetician and Holistic Cancer Educator, Kuehn has provided esthetic services directly for cancer patients since 2009, and has trained 4,000 students in oncology esthetics since 2013 through her Life Changing Esthetics® coursework.

“Finding the right sheet mask for my very special clients going through cancer treatment was extremely important to me,” Kuehn stated. “As I was searching, Bel Mondo reached out and offered to formulate a bio cellulose mask with safe ingredients that could deliver the type of benefits I was looking for. This mask is a fabulous addition to any facial protocol when trying to calm, soothe, and hydrate skin.”

Availability Through Skin Care Professionals

Bel Mondo Beauty’s Moisture Renewal Mask will be sold only to skin care professionals. Estheticians can purchase products through Bel Mondo Beauty’s website after creating an account, and from Med Spa Distributors (Kingsland, Georgia).

Bel Mondo will donate Moisture Renewal Masks to Oncology Spa Solutions to support its educational classes, and become one of the organization’s Mission Partners. It will also contribute a portion of revenue from its new product to SPOT-ON (Spa Professionals Oncology Trained, Oncology Navigators) – the first national association for oncology-trained spa professionals.

“Sheet masks have enjoyed explosive growth in the last five years, with most brands focusing on the traditional beauty consumer,” stated Lou Martelli, Bel Mondo Beauty President. “Our focus has been on the professional channel, and it ultimately led to a wonderful collaborative opportunity with Becky Kuehn and Oncology Spa Solutions. It feels good to be able to support those on the cancer journey in this small way.”

First Holocaust Survivor Climbs Kilimanjaro at Age 83

Nat Shaffir on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Photo courtesy Nat Shaffir.

When things became arduous, Shaffir heard his father’s words, ‘Never give up.’

On August 24, 2019, Nat Shaffir was on top of the world.

He had reached to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest peak in Africa. His body was physically exhausted, but his spirit was overjoyed.

“I was in seventh heaven,” Shaffir recalled.

This was not the first struggle that he has had to overcome.

Shaffir is a Holocaust Survivor – the first to successfully climb Kilimanjaro.

HIS EARLY YEARS

In 1942, when Shaffir was just five years old, a priest showed up at his family’s dairy farm in Romania. The priest knew the family well. He visited weekly for donations. But this time, he was accompanied by a police officer and two soldiers.

“These are Jews,” the priest said to the officer.

The military confiscated the farm and cattle. The family was forced to relocate to the Jewish ghetto in Iasi. There, Shaffir lived in poverty in a crowded room with his two sisters and parents. His parents were given manual labor jobs while he and his sisters were forbidden to attend school.

His father was later taken away to a distant labor camp, leaving young Shaffir to care for the rest of the family. Before he left, his father told him that things would get harder.

“Never give up,” his father said.

Those three words have kept Shaffir going for his entire life.

CLIMBING KILIMANJARO

Mount Kilimanjaro stands 19,340 feet above sea level. Climbing the peak does not require any technical skills or special equipment. But it is a formidable test due to its extreme altitude. Reaching the top takes physical fitness and determination.

Shaffir kept a slow but steady pace on the mountain. He encountered adversity on some parts of the terrain. He also struggled to eat on nearly the entire hike due to a loss of appetite, one of the common symptoms of altitude sickness.

“Climbing Kilimanjaro at my age was tough,” Shaffir admitted.

But when things became arduous, he heard his father’s words, “Never give up.”

He knew that he would make it to the summit.

“Nat had great endurance and determination,” said lead guide Raymond Mandari of Ultimate Kilimanjaro. “Climbing Kilimanjaro is a big accomplishment for anyone, but for an 83-year old, it is remarkable.”

INSPIRING OTHERS

Shaffir climbed Kilimanjaro to inspire others to challenge themselves to do the same, to conquer their own metaphorical mountains.

He has a message for those that find themselves in troubling times. “To people who are experiencing hardship, difficulties, atrocities, and hate – never give up.”

Russian soldiers liberated Iasi in 1945. By then, 32 members of Shaffir’s family had died in Nazi concentration camps.

Shaffir moved to the United States in 1961. He and his wife have five children and 12 grandchildren – all of them named after family members lost during the Holocaust.

Henry Ford e-Home Care Reduces Hospital Readmissions Utilizing Telehealth from HRS

Utilizing technology to care for our patients is the future of healthcare. Technology provides access to patients in more ways that are convenient for them.

Henry Ford e-Home Care has announced a significant reduction in hospital readmissions for patients receiving telehealth care via Henry Ford’s e-Home Care program. Achieving monthly readmission rates as low as 7%, Henry Ford e-Home Care has reduced their average hospital readmission rate for the first six months of 2019 by 45% compared with the prior six months of 2018. Utilizing software from Health Recovery Solutions (HRS), Henry Ford e-Home Care provides remote patient monitoring and telehealth services to more than 130 patients each month.

Henry Ford e-Home Care partnered with HRS in 2017 to capitalize on the growing role of technology in healthcare and its ability to help improve clinical outcomes and reduce costs to health systems, payors, and patients. Through its e-Home Care program, Henry Ford is able to treat a diverse set of patient populations, including those with chronic CHF, COPD, hypertension, and cancer, as well as patients recovering from cardiothoracic or transplant surgery.

“Utilizing technology to care for our patients is the future of healthcare. Technology provides access to patients in more ways that are convenient for them, efficient for care providers, and offers an extra layer of safety for our patients in their homes,” said Mary Hagen, Manager of Henry Ford e-Home Care. “We see a future in which patients are comfortable with and proficient at utilizing mobile devices to communicate with clinicians, manage their healthcare, and be more knowledgeable about their own health, as well as the health of their loved ones.”

Patients are enrolled in e-Home Care following an initial home health visit. Once enrolled, patients receive a 4G tablet pre-loaded with the HRS software, along with Bluetooth biometric monitoring devices. Via the tablet, patients receive medication reminders, access educational videos and daily disease-specific symptom questions, and record daily vitals utilizing the biometric devices. In addition, patients and clinicians can utilize phone calls and a video conferencing platform on the tablet. All patient data is uploaded in real-time to the clinician’s dashboard and the Health System EMR, allowing a patient’s entire care team to observe the patient’s health status.

Using the clinician dashboard, phone conversations, and virtual visits, Henry Ford’s telehealth nurses address variances in patients’ vitals. Patient data from the telehealth and remote monitoring system enable the telehealth team to observe trends in patient status, adherence, and self-care, to quickly intervene when a patient’s status puts them at risk for readmission.

“Henry Ford’s e-Home Care program demonstrates the importance of communication across the care continuum. Their EMR integration and centralized care model are key drivers of their program’s success and prove their dedication to patient care and innovation. We are excited to continue working with Henry Ford to expand their telehealth program and access to care,” added William Ashton, Client Success Manager at HRS.

In the coming months, Henry Ford e-Home Care will look to expand their program by partnering with insurance agencies to further reduce the cost of care and incorporate more patients into their comprehensive care continuum.

Anelto Health has announced its “Partnership for Better Outcomes” by releasing its new “No-Risk RPM Platform” for Remote Patient Monitoring

“We have removed all the barriers associated with organizations that are unfamiliar with buying or leasing equipment”, said David Fronk, SVP of Business Development and Sales at Anelto Health

Anelto Health, has launched its new “No-Risk RPM Platform for Remote Patient Monitoring. The platform can integrate with software systems for Chronic Care Management, CCM, Care Management, CM, or Transitional Care Management, TCM. In conjunction with TCM, CCM or Care Management, the 2-way dynamic voice hub pairs with vital sign monitors and activity trackers to improve the health of the senior and to prevent unnecessary ER visits and hospitalizations. It has built in alerts and dynamic, intuitive patient reactive questionnaires and ability to integrate with a 24/7 clinical call center. Anelto’s No-Risk RPM Platform eliminates the risk associated with owning and deploying hardware-based systems.

“We have removed all the barriers associated with organizations that are unfamiliar with buying or leasing equipment”, said David Fronk, SVP of Business Development and Sales at Anelto Health. “Hospitals and companies that want to implement an RPM solution for better care and outcomes for their patients can now move forward with confidence. If they can’t bill for the equipment, by using the existing CPT 99454 for RPM, there is no monthly equipment charge from Anelto. Anelto Health is determined to make sure our equipment does what it was designed to do, and that is to improve communication with the patient, engage them in their health and get them to take their vital signs daily so the data and the analytics can help improve the patient’s life by improving their chronic diseases.”

RPM is a new efficient way of caring for seniors outside of their doctor’s office that can reduce the cost associated with caring for this subset of the population while dramatically improving clinical outcomes and their quality of life. This allows them to “age in place”, which over 80% of seniors prefer. We believe with CPT code 99454, that the economic benefits for CCM companies or hospitals make this a win-win for the patient and those providing services to the patient.

Additional benefits of Anelto Health’s Remote Patient Monitoring System include:

  • Easy to set up and use.
  • Always on with a 3-day emergency battery pack for times when power is out.
  • Comes with a friends and family app to keep up with your loved one. Know how they are doing on their chronic disease care, activity and allows for communication and encouragement.
  • Fun activities and communications to keep the senior engaged and help with depression from loneliness
  • Programmable call functionality to allow a 24/7 call center integration or their doctor or his/her care team to call into the hub relieving the stress of answering the phone of an unknown caller.

To make an appointment for a meeting at the upcoming HIMSS Health 2.0 Conference in Santa Clara, CA on 9/16 – 9/18/2019 or to know more about Anelto Health, it’s Remote Patient Monitoring Platform, request a white paper or clinical paper: Visit its website at https://www.aneltohealth.com and also view the patient interactive video on Anelto Health’s unique platform.
