Mercy Medical Center Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Opening of Nationally Acclaimed Center for Women’s Health and Medicine

Mercy Medical Center clinical and lay staff gather to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Center for Women's Health and Medicine.

Mercy Medical Center clinical and lay staff gather to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Center for Women’s Health and Medicine.

“….Mercy continues to advocate for women’s needs in body, mind and spirit. Through the Women’s Center, we see the fulfillment of the mission of the Sisters of Mercy, each and every day,” said Thomas R. Mullen, President and CEO, Mercy Health Services.

Mercy Medical Center is celebrating as the 144-year-old hospital recognizes the 25th anniversary of The Weinberg Center for Women’s Health & Medicine. The Center first opened on Sept. 23, 1994 with ceremonies led by CBS-TV “Sixty Minutes” anchor/reporter Leslie Stahl.

The Center’s offerings were originally scattered throughout the Mercy campus. The Center would find a new home under a single roof in 2003, as Mercy cut the ribbon on a state-of-the-art, 6-floor facility—The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Center at Mercy at 227 St. Paul Place—opening on time and within budget thanks to donations including a $10 million gift from The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation. Today, Mercy’s Weinberg Center hosts many of Mercy’s premier Centers of Excellence, including breast care, gynecology, gynecologic oncology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, mammography, and radiation oncology services.

“A quarter century ago, we began a journey that would guide Mercy into the next millennium. A Gallup survey was commissioned, and Mercy medical and executive staff visited hospitals across the nation to determine the best way to enhance our women’s services. The result was the Center for Women’s Health and Medicine. As then, Mercy continues to advocate for women’s needs in body, mind and spirit. Through the Women’s Center, we see the fulfillment of the mission of the Sisters of Mercy, each and every day,” said Thomas R. Mullen, President and CEO, Mercy Health Services.

As part of the 25th anniversary celebratory campaign, Mercy will air via Facebook Watch a series of one-on-one interviews conducted by noted Baltimore broadcast journalist Donna Hamilton with leading Mercy Women’s Center physicians, including Drs. Neil Rosenshein, Dwight Im, and Neil Friedman. Mercy Health Foundation will present an invitation-only special celebratory event on Tuesday evening, Oct. 15th, 2019.

“I’ve been privileged to be a part of the growth of Mercy’s Women’s Center, and am gratified to think of the many patients who have been cared for by the dedicated and talented doctors, nurses and other medical providers, here at Mercy over the years,” said Neil B. Friedman, M.D., FACS, Medical Director of The Weinberg Center for Women’s Health & Medicine at Mercy, and Director of Mercy’s Hoffberger Breast Center.

Special 25th anniversary Women’s Center signage and banners are on view on Mercy’s downtown campus and at its hubsites, including Lutherville, Reisterstown, Glen Burnie, Overlea, Canton, and Columbia, MD. Other highlights include new furniture and entry-way enhancements to the Weinberg Center; the installation of a self-contained water feature and garden with live flowering plants located in the center’s 5th floor atrium; a day-long celebration held Sept. 23rd for patients and Mercy staff; and the debut of a new television segment showcasing Mercy’s Women’s Center to run on WBAL-TV11, home to Mercy’s acclaimed health/medical news segment, “The Woman’s Doctor,” which has aired on the top-rated Baltimore station and NBC affiliate for 25 years.

According to Dr. Friedman, Mercy’s “Woman’s Doctor” provides “important health education on a variety of topics, everything from breast and ovarian cancer to all manner of gynecologic issues, and much more. Education is still our most important tool to encourage women to seek treatment and become their own advocates for their health,” he said.

“What started 25 years ago in the heart of Baltimore now reaches throughout the mid-Atlantic region. The physicians of Mercy’s Women’s Center see patients across the state of Maryland, and through our growing network of primary and specialty care centers that ring the Beltway, on the Eastern Shore, and even into West Virginia,” Mr. Mullen said.

Founded in 1874 by The Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Medical Center is a university-affiliated Catholic hospital with a national reputation for women’s health. Mercy is home to the acclaimed Weinberg Center for Women’s Health and Medicine, and the $400+ million, 20-story Mary Catherine Bunting Center. Pressley Ridge Hosts Trauma Summit

“We are privileged to be able to bring together our region’s leading social service providers along with national experts to collaborate and create communities that thrive,” said Susanne Cole, President and CEO of Pressley Ridge.

Trauma and adversity have been shown to directly correlate with an increase in addiction, systematic racism, poverty and poor mental health. As a leader in trauma-informed care, Pressley Ridge continuously seeks to improve the services offered to children and families impacted by adversity. With a goal of creating a shared power that advances policy and practice from trauma-informed to trauma-infused institutions, Pressley Ridge will bring together national and regional mental health professionals invested in the advancement of trauma-informed care on October 23rd and 24th for the 2019 Building Connections and Hope for the Future Trauma Summit.

The summit will facilitate an exchange of information, an exploration of successful strategies and the opportunity for a deeper dialogue on what sustains hope for those who have experienced significant adversity and trauma. Through building social connections and links to new ideas regarding the sources of trauma, the summit aims to explore and identify the means to create environments in which resilience thrives. After a day of exploring innovative practices, summit participants will spend a half-day building on their collaborative vision of what trauma-infused care means for them and how they will act on this vision.

“Our long history of serving children and families affected by trauma has led us toward infusing trauma-informed practices into everything we do. We are privileged to be able to bring together our region’s leading social service providers along with national experts to collaborate and create communities that thrive,” said Susanne Cole, President and CEO of Pressley Ridge.

Renowned expert in the field of mental health and trauma, Bruce D. Perry, MD, PhD, will serve as keynote speaker at the summit. He will discuss how trauma interrupts human development and what therapists can do to help children who have experienced trauma. Dr. Perry, who recently was interviewed by Oprah Winfrey on 60 Minutes, is a psychiatrist and the Founder and Senior Fellow of the ChildTrauma Academy in Houston, Texas. He also is an Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, IL.

Dr. Perry developed the Neurosequential Model, which is a developmentally-informed, biologically-respectful approach to working with at-risk children and their families that has revolutionized the trauma-informed community. Pressley Ridge is in the final stages of certification as a Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics flagship site through the ChildTrauma Academy.

Following the keynote, Michelle McMurray, MSW, will discuss her personal experiences surrounding mental health and culture and how it has led to a compassionate pursuit of system change. She strives to improve access to high-quality physical and mental health care for low-income and racial and ethnic minority populations and to strengthen small, community-based nonprofits.

The summit will feature a panel discussion around trauma-informed care and future action. In addition to Dr. Perry and Ms. McMurray, panel members include:

  • Walter Smith, Jr., PhD, founder of The Western Pennsylvania Family Center and former executive director of Family Resources, a child abuse treatment and prevention organization in Pittsburgh, PA
  • Joyce James, LMSW-AP, CEO and owner of Joyce James Consulting based in Central Texas, focuses on supporting and developing leaders toward a race equity analysis using data and racial equity principles that lead to systems transformation and the achievement of equity.
  • Dr. Dennis Daley, PhD, former Senior Clinical Director of Substance Use Services, Behavioral Health Integration Division, UPMC Insurance Division; former Director of Regional Research & Training Center of Appalachian Tri-State node of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Clinical Trials Network; and former Chief of Addiction Medicine Services, Department of Psychiatry, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic

The 2019 Building Connections and Hope for the Future Trauma Summit will be held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in McCandless Twp., PA. The summit is made possible through the generous support of Highmark, Inc. and the Staunton Farm Foundation. For more information on Pressley Ridge, visit http://www.pressleyridge.org.

mother and grandfather of children born opioid dependent appointed to Purdue Phrma creditors committee

Said Co-Counsel Celeste Brustowicz, “This is the first definitive sign that the fight we have waged on behalf of the innocent victims caught up in the prescription opioid crisis may finally get the medical trust fund we have advocated for.”

Among four individuals appointed to the official committee of unsecured creditors finalized by the U.S. Trustee regarding the $10 billion Purdue Pharma LP bankruptcy filing will be a mother and grandfather of children born opioid dependent and represented by the legal-medical partnership known as the Opioid Justice Team.

“This finally represents a recognition of the hundreds of thousands of children who are exposed to opioids in the mother’s womb and who upon birth require immediate intervention, as well as life-long medical monitoring and services,” said Attorney Scott Bickford, one of several attorneys representing these children in more than 35 class actions filed in states across the U.S.

Others appointed to the nine-representative committee during a recent meeting in New York are Blue Cross & Blue Shield Association, CVC caremark, LTS Lohmann, West Boca Medical Center, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation and two additional personal injury victims.

Mr. Bickford immediately moved to file a friend of the court legal brief in the U.S. Sixth District Appellate court supporting the State of Ohio’s position that municipalities trying to siphon off money from the Purdue bankruptcy settlement lack the legal ability to ask for those damages.

Said Co-Counsel Celeste Brustowicz, “This is the first definitive sign that the fight we have waged on behalf of the innocent victims caught up in the prescription opioid crisis may finally get the medical trust fund we have advocated for.”

The Opioid Justice Team estimates that every 15 to 19 minutes in the U.S., a baby is born already dependent on opioids due to the mother’s in-vitro exposure. For more information on this condition known as Neo-Natal Abstinence Syndrome, go to http://www.opioidjusticeteam.com

Pediatric Dental Office to Host Third Biannual Community Day in Columbus

https://www.prweb.com/

All patients under 18 will be accepted regardless of ability to pay.

“Moms and Dads don’t have to worry if their kids’ Medicaid cards are up to date – they just have to bring them to our events to get their normal twice-yearly exams and cleanings.” – Dr. Mitzi Hines

On Saturday, September 28, 2019, Hines Little Smiles will once again take action to improve the oral health of uninsured or underinsured children from the Columbus, Ohio, area. The pediatric dental practice’s third Biannual Community Day will open at 9:00 AM and run until 3:00 PM. Patients will be accepted in order of arrival, must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and will receive basic dental services free of charge.

Hines Little Smiles hosted their first Biannual Community Day in 2018, in response to rising dental care costs and an insurance system that was unable to provide support and care for children from low-income families. The event was met by enormous response from parents of children in the local community, and has since become a twice-yearly affair.

“We realized in 2018 that Medicaid wasn’t providing sufficient coverage for patients under our care,” says Dr. Mitzi Hines, who opened the practice in 2009. “We made the difficult decision to stop accepting Medicaid at our practice, because we felt we could provide more and better care for our patients independently through a biannual community day. It was the right choice. Our time and energy that were previously wrapped up in fighting a broken system on these children’s behalf, are now poured into a completely free, walk-in community event we hold twice a year.”

Dr. Hines says the turnout at each event has been incredible. “Parents know we don’t accept Medicaid anymore, but they also know we are looking out for their children. We have seen our former patients return to us for care, and are able to continue safeguarding their oral health outside of the restrictive insurance system. Moms and Dads don’t have to worry if their kids’ Medicaid cards are up to date – they just have to bring them to our events to get their normal twice-yearly exams and cleanings. We’ve also seen a lot of new faces, which just drives home how important this kind of event is to our community.”

The free dental services provided during the event include standard cleanings, fillings, extractions, and more. (Treatments requiring general anesthesia will not be provided.) Children will be seen on a first come, first serve basis, and all patients up to age 18 will be accepted regardless of their ability to pay.

“At Hines Little Smiles, the focus is always on the children of our community,” says Dr. Hines. “During our last event, we saw 75 children and dispensed nearly $40,000 worth of quality dental services. We are excited to be holding our third biannual no-charge day, and plan to continue this twice a year for the foreseeable future – it’s the perfect way to reach the kids who need us most.”

To learn more about the Hines Little Smiles Biannual Community Day, parents and guardians can call the practice at 614-475-KIDZ (5439).

Atlantic Shores Retirement Community Vocal Groups Use Music for Therapy and Personal Expression

https://www.prweb.com/

Atlantic Shores Chorus

We’re thrilled to bring music that brightens their souls.

Their talents light up a room, but it’s not just audiences that are inspired as they experience a performance by vocal groups from Atlantic Shores Retirement Community in Virginia Beach, Virginia, it’s the chorus members themselves. The only retirement community in the region with both a four-part chorus and special ensemble group, Atlantic Shores proactively supports music education and performance for the personal expression of their musically talented residents, to enrich the lives of its independent living, assisted living and memory care residents, to give back to the greater community, and to span the generations.

The long tradition of resident musical groups began almost 23 years ago when Atlantic Shores first opened. Resident Dean Hatheway, who loved to sing in his Barber Shop Quartet, started the first group, Community Singing. They performed with no accompaniment, but with Dean leading songs with his harmonica. This group evolved into the Forget-Me-Notes, an a cappella group started in 2009 by resident Mike Ferguson, who led with skills learned in his church choir. When the choir was in need of a new director, resident Don Beamon reached out to former resident Beth Smallwood with a request for her to teach them a song in three-part harmony, after which she was asked to remain as their leader.

A trained vocalist, band member and professional piano teacher, her first act as director was to change the name of the group to the Atlantic Shores Chorus. She put out a call for singers, and discovered many who had never participated before. The group’s 40 members range from those who sang in college and community choruses, to an 89 year-old Methodist minister who had never learned to read music.

Members also expressed interest in creating a smaller group to do special performances inside and outside the community as a show choir. Tryouts were held, and 12 members selected to create the Atlantic Shores Coastal Singers.

Both groups perform a wide variety of styles, with almost half the music arranged by Beth, and rehearsals held once a week.

The groups delight fellow residents throughout the year, with a season running from September through May, always ending with a popular Memorial Day concert. Performances for 250 guests are held in the community’s beautiful Chesapeake Room. Special sing-along shows are created for Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day. Patriotic songs are featured in a special Veteran’s Day celebration. In the off-season, July and August, the chorus performs sing-along’s for the community, including a special preview of songs they will be performing in the fall.

Throughout the year, several themed shows add to the fun, including the upcoming “Cruise Around The Word,” performance, and “The Weather Channel” performance, starring resident Bob Burchett as a weatherman announcing weather-themed songs like “Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head.” A special multigenerational Christmas concert is being planned for this year, with Virginia Beach’s Ocean Lakes High School students joining the chorus for a special holiday event at Atlantic Shores.

Performances frequently integrate actors or dancers for an additional element of fun, including fellow resident groups, like Atlantic Shores’ Friday morning dance group.

Throughout the years, many memorable performances have especially touched the group’s director. According to Beth, “My favorite one has to be our Broadway Musicals performance featuring Rogers & Hammerstein, and Gershwin. It was challenging because there were so many songs, but also so beautiful, especially when our resident couple, the Beamons, danced to the Tennessee Waltz.”

The Coastal Singers provide a very special welcome to new Atlantic Shores residents by performing at New Member’s Tea events, and also entertain local church and civic groups at luncheons and meetings held at Atlantic Shores. The group also donates their time to perform for organizations in the area, like the Thoroughgood Ladies Music Club.

One of the most popular and rewarding ways this group uses its musical talents is by performing each month for residents at Harbourway, Atlantic Shores’ assisted living facility. The interactive sing-along concerts are one of the most eagerly anticipated social events, and also serve as informal music therapy for the residents.

According to Beth, “I’m a psychiatric nurse, so I know the value of music therapy. Many of these residents have physical disabilities or cognitive challenges. We’re thrilled to bring music that brightens their souls. They even come early to listen to our rehearsals.” Atlantic Shores Chorus and Coastal Singers member Shirley Barcus adds, “It’s so obvious that these wonderful residents really enjoy the music, they always smile and sing along. Their joy brings me joy.”

Musical talents at Atlantic Shores extend beyond singing, to a pool of talented musicians who use instruments to perform, including a couple that plays duets on the piano, residents and staff who play the guitar, and even a gentleman who plays the harmonica.

The community’s love of music also attracts talented performers from around the region, who stage four to five performances at Atlantic Shores every week. Big Bands play for special parties, grade school children sing for afternoon gatherings, and popular local bands take to the stage for Atlantic Shores’ popular weekly TGIF happy hours. And young rising stars from The Hurrah Players, Virginia’s leading family theatre company, pack the house to perform portions of their acclaimed stage shows.

In turn, Atlantic Shores residents frequently attend a wide range of area performances including, Tidewater Winds, Symphonicity, Symphony by the Sea, and Big Bands on the Bay. And Atlantic Shores has a tradition of supporting the performing arts by partnering with the Virginia Opera, and the Sandler Center.

As the musical “face” of the retirement community, Atlantic Shores’ vocal performance groups continue a tradition that is driven by its member’s love of performance. Beth agrees, “Their enthusiasm is amazing. They’re always prepared, eager, gracious, and ready to go above and beyond. Whether performing or just rehearsing, they say the experience fills them with happiness. For that we are all grateful.”
