The Twenty for 2020 webinar series is designed to set departments up for success for the coming year. Some topics include PPE Management, ISO Success, Annual Reports, and streamlining inspections. The webinars are led by ER Senior Data Analyst, Tom Louis, who previously served 22 years in the fire service as a Firefighter/Paramedic, Captain, and Battalion Chief. Emergency Reporting is dedicated to serving the fire/EMS community by providing the tools they need to be successful. The topics will cover some aspects within the ER system but focuses on general tips that can be used by non-ER users as well.

Continued education and training are key factors in any job but are especially so in the fire service where their work directly affects the communities around them. One of the core values that Emergency Reporting was built on is fire service advocacy. They believe that investing time and resources into creating training materials can help firefighters keep up to date on changing technologies and data management needs. B2i Healthcare (B2i) has been certified by the European Health Data & Evidence Network (EHDEN) to transform data to a common data model and unlock the potential of real-world healthcare data. Through this program, B2i will work with healthcare data owners to standardize their electronic healthcare records to a common format. Each healthcare provider can receive a grant of up to 100,000 EUR from the EHDEN Harmonization Fund to support B2i’s data harmonization activities.

Orsolya Bali, B2i’s Managing Director stated, “We’re delighted to be one of first SMEs trained and certified to ensure high validity transformation of data to the OMOP common data model. EHDEN’s generous grant opportunities will allow many hospitals and primary care networks to explore the transformative power of data analytics across a harmonized electronic healthcare record standard.”

EHDEN is an Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) project which aspires to harmonize 100 million anonymized health records across multiple data sources. The project will support other IMI projects within a wider Big Data for Better Outcomes program and will collaborate strongly with other key stakeholders in Europe, such as the European Medicines Agency. This will ultimately result in a Europe that more smartly manages and shares research methodologies – and expands education in open science and collaboration.

“We believe EHDEN is a flagship project, and it will be significantly influential,” said Nigel Hughes, Project Leader for EHDEN at Janssen, “building on the heritage and developments of prior and current projects in and out of IMI, and it will establish 21st century tools for 21st research.” Prof. Peter Rijnbeek, Erasmus Medical Center and Coordinator of EHDEN added, “As such it will impact on European health records research for years and decades to come, and will enable better health decisions, outcomes and care.” 

Central to EHDEN will be the standardization of health data to the OMOP common data model and the utilization of analytical tools such as those developed by the international Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) open science collaboration (http://www.ohdsi.org), and others.

He recommends that therapists and parents use Fergen as a psychological aid, to read to their patients or to their children. For parents in the process of divorcing, he suggests that each parent read Fergen to their children separately, to provide continuity and reinforcement.

According to Dr. Maisel “Over 10% of the American population is currently afflicted with diabetes. Diabetic eye disease, although extremely treatable, remains one of the leading causes of blindness and blurred vision in adults. It often has no early warning symptoms or pain. When advanced, it can cause blurred vision, floaters or total visual loss, but don’t wait until you notice problems with your vision. A dilated retina examination can detect diabetic retinopathy before vision loss begins. Healthy people need eye exams every three years and yearly after age 65. Diabetics should be evaluated yearly even without symptoms. While laser treatments at the proper time can prevent blindness for over 90% of patients, vitreous surgery can restore vision in others even with advanced complications such as vitreous hemorrhage or tractional retinal detachments. Blurred vision, that formerly was only slowed with focal laser treatment, can now be stabilized or improved in most patients with pharmacologic treatments administered in the office on a routine basis.”

What is the Gift of Sight Program?

The Gift of Sight Program of the New York OSIA Grand Lodge Foundation began in 1982 and gives both medical and financial assistance to people in need with vision problems. Who do they help?

What have they done?

The Gift of Sight purchased the Corneal Refrigeration Unit for the Long Island Eye Bank at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York. They also fund research grants for the Wilmer Eye Institute for Retinal Research at John Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

Every year, the Gift of Sight program sponsors a guide dog through the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind in Smithtown, New York. Many senior citizens without health insurance who have not yet qualified for Medicare have had retinal or cataract surgery through the help of the Gift of Sight program. They are also a regular supporter of Helen Keller Services.

24h RECOVERY: Researcher Angelo D’Alessandro, PhD, Assistant Professor, University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics, will share findings from “Metabolic Predictors of 24h Post-Transfusion Recovery in End of Storage Control and Hypoxic Red Blood Cells” (Abstract OA3-ST4-29, oral presentation, Saturday, Oct. 19, 2:00 – 2:15pm at Convention Center Room 302).

RBC LESION IMPROVEMENT: Comparative analysis of hypoxic vs. conventional storage of RBCs is the focus of “Long-term hypoxic storage of red blood cells results in amelioration of lesion hallmarks and Increased in vivo recovery at 24 hours post-transfusion” (Abstract P-NE-17, poster presentation, Sunday, Oct. 20, 1:00 – 2:00pm, Convention Center Exhibit Halls 2-3).

SICKLE CELL ANEMIA: With transfusion therapy well-established as an important treatment for sickle cell anemia (SCA) and sickle cell disease (SCD), research into the appropriateness of hypoxically stored blood for this patient population is warranted. “Effects of hypoxic red blood cells on sickling kinetics of red blood cells from patients with sickle cell disease” (Abstract P-NE-5, poster presentation, Sunday, Oct. 20, 1:00 – 2:00pm, Convention Center Exhibit Halls 2-3).
