Caring.com Announces Top 10 Best and Worst Places for Seniors to Live in the United States

News Image

Caring.com, a leading senior care referral service with Family Advisors nationwide, released its 2019 Senior Living Report on the Best and Worst Places for Seniors to Live. All 50 states and 302 cities in the U.S. were ranked based on healthcare, housing options, community engagement, transportation, quality of life and workforce development.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, almost 20 million Americans will be age 80 or older by 2030. With such a fast-growing population, it’s critical that our communities address the needs and socioeconomic conditions of the elderly. Caring’s team spent countless hours researching 70 factors that were key markers for livability and quality of life. A total of six metrics were used to grade each city and state.

“Compiling and analyzing senior care data to provide helpful and highly relevant insights has been part of our social mission since our company was founded in 2007,” says Jason Persinger, Caring’s Chief Digital Officer. “This comprehensive study is designed to help families and seniors understand and discuss the landscape for seniors living in specific states, while also supporting our nation’s communities in better serving the growing population of seniors.”

Caring not only examined top priorities for seniors, but they also expanded the study to highlight factors driving socioeconomic conditions for older adults. Healthcare and affordable housing options were top-of-mind when measuring the most livable environments. Other areas that contribute to the well-being and quality of life for seniors include community engagement, transportation and workforce development.

“In addition to healthcare and housing options, we also thought it was important to look at states and cities with the best workforce development programs,” says Persinger. “Although some people completely retire at age 65, many seniors are forced to work part-time or take on a second career just to make ends meet.”

The 2019 list recognized New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island along with the best overall states. Idaho, New Mexico, Arkansas, Nevada and South Carolina were ranked among the worst states. Weight Loss Surgery Gives Willpower the Help it Needs to Defeat Obesity, says West Medical

https://www.prweb.com/

Resisting over-consumption of our favorite high-calorie treats is about more than mere willpower for the severely obese.

West Medical says weight loss surgery is the one proven method of short-circuiting this metabolic catch-22.

An October 1 article on Medical Xpress reports on the evermore evident fact that failed weight-loss attempts are not the result of weak willpower. Severely obese individuals who are attempting to lose weight may be extremely motivated and determined, and quite disciplined in most areas of their lives, but they are fighting against their own body’s innate biological processes. In some cases, these individuals may be able to rapidly lose significant amounts of weight, but that’s when the real challenge starts. As the body recognizes that it is deviating from its normal state, complex chemical processes start to encourage overeating in a number of ways largely involving the production of hormones. The feelings of appetite these hormones stimulate are essentially indistinguishable from hunger and are extremely difficult to ignore even for the most determined individual. Worse, they only increase as more weight is lost. Southern California weight loss clinic West Medical says weight loss surgery is the one proven method of short-circuiting this metabolic catch-22.

West Medical notes that there are a number of ways to take advantage of this kind of medicine. For severely obese individuals, the clinic continues, sleeve gastrectomy surgery may be the most effective method of fighting hunger hormone production. The weight loss clinic notes that, during the surgery, the patient’s stomach is reconfigured into a pouch-like chamber that is reduced to about one-tenth of its original size. West Medical explains that, as the remaining portion of the stomach is removed, production centers for most hunger hormones are either removed or significantly hampered. The clinic says that by hindering this biological process, patients are much less likely to splurge their way back to obesity after they have lost significant weight – although, of course, having a much smaller stomach also makes overeating far more unpleasant.

The weight loss specialists acknowledge that serious lifestyle changes must occur after any weight loss procedure for it to be a long-term success – but the surgery makes them easier. Of course, as the benefits of weight loss accrue, life can become a lot more enjoyable. Moreover, the weight loss clinic notes that a wealth of studies have provided an exceptional amount of evidence stating that patients are far less likely to suffer premature death – and the serious health problems that cause it. While medical science has reduced the mortality rate on many of these illnesses significantly, most of them can also greatly reduce an individual’s overall quality of life. West Medical concludes that the benefits of weight loss operations such as sleeve gastrectomy surgery are more than worth the effort.

Patients who qualify for a sleeve gastrectomy typically have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more or 35 or more with related health problems such as type 2 diabetes. Other patients may take advantage of a growing number of alternative procedures. New Sigma Book Provides Strategies to Prevent Violence in Healthcare Settings

De-Escalating Violence in Healthcare: Strategies to Reduce Emotional Tension and Aggression cover image

“Healthcare professionals can, at any time, encounter an agitated person in their profession. How that healthcare worker responds to that situation can make the difference between the situation diffusing and resolving calmly or escalating to a physical, violent encounter.”

Violent incidents are more than four times as likely to occur in healthcare settings than in other professional workplaces. In 2014, 21% of registered nurses and nursing students reported being physically assaulted at work and more than 50% reported being verbally abused. Experts estimate at least 50% of healthcare professionals will encounter violence at least once in their healthcare career.

The most beneficial method of preventing healthcare violence is de-escalation—using therapeutic communication and interventions to defuse emotional tension. In De-Escalating Violence in Healthcare, author S. E. McKnight provides a comprehensive guidebook of therapeutic de-escalation techniques to improve safety in healthcare settings and manage aggressive behavior. The content outlines best practice techniques for easy and successful application in real-world scenarios—providing objectives, case studies, and graphics, as well as electronic assessment and relevant documentation templates. Further, specific techniques that address difficult behavioral issues associated with schizophrenia, dementia, bipolar disorder, delirium, and anxiety/panic disorders are also provided.

“De-escalation is one of the most valuable skills a healthcare worker can possess,” said author S. E. McKnight, DNP, MSN, BA, RN-BC. “Healthcare professionals can, at any time, encounter an agitated person in their profession. How that healthcare worker responds to that situation can make the difference between the situation diffusing and resolving calmly or escalating to a physical, violent encounter.”

The author has also created material downloads to support the use of this book in classroom and professional settings. Materials such as the De-Escalating Violence in Healthcare Quiz (plus answer key) and a De-Escalation Body Language Tips Sheet, along with other supplemental files, are available for free download at https://sigma.nursingrepository.org/handle/10755/17096.

Relatient Acquires Everseat, A Leading Patient Self-Scheduling And Waitlist Software Company

“We’re excited to further develop Everseat’s patient self-scheduling and waitlist technology in-house and welcome Everseat’s customers and employees to Relatient.” Michele Perry, CEO, Relatient, Inc.

Relatient, Inc., the leading customer-rated patient engagement SaaS company finalized the acquisition of Everseat, Inc., a SaaS company well-known for its patient self-scheduling and waitlist software used around the U.S. since 2013. The acquisition of Everseat by Relatient marks the culmination of a two-year-long working partnership between the two companies and will leverage resources for expanded solutions, deeper support, and faster innovation for existing customers and healthcare providers overall.

As patient expectations for mobile accessibility and self-service increase, scheduling has either become a point of dissatisfaction with providers or a point of differentiation. A study by Accenture found that 64% of patients would schedule at least one of their appointments online in 2019. As a result, practices and medical groups are quickly adopting this technology to avoid losing patients to more convenient and flexible care.

“Everseat developed an effective product that fits perfectly into the Relatient’s platform of patient-centered engagement tools and automated outreach,” said Michele Perry, CEO of Relatient. “We’re excited to further develop Everseat’s patient self-scheduling and waitlist technology in-house and welcome Everseat’s customers and employees to Relatient.”

Through the partnership, Relatient has already integrated Everseat’s patient self-scheduling and waitlist technology into its platform. Relatient’s solution allows patients to see availabilities online and schedule on the practice calendar without making a call, creating a profile, or logging into a portal. In turn, the waitlist tool automatically contacts patients in the queue whenever an availability pops up and allows them to claim the appointment by simply replying to a text message. With the acquisition, Relatient is investing in more development of next-gen tools and expanded integration with the technology of other practice management solutions and applications.

“Relatient’s patient engagement platform and employees are the best I’ve encountered and they have the resources to get the technology we developed at Everseat to the next level more quickly so more customers can solve real healthcare challenges,” said Jeff Peres, CEO of Everseat. “The team and I are excited to join with Relatient and to keep serving our current and future customers.”

About Relatient

Relatient is an industry recognized and award-winning, SaaS-based patient engagement company that improves patient and provider communications for increased patient satisfaction and improved productivity. Relatient has engaged more than 25 million patients on behalf of U.S. providers, medical practices, hospitals, and health systems and annually delivers 120 million patient messages. Relatient’s platform integrates with more than 85 practice management and electronic health databases to stop the phone tag, eliminate bottlenecks, reduce no-shows, drive appointments, increase online reviews, get patient feedback, and speed patient payments, all while supporting health and care quality initiatives. New launch from AristaMD increases wound care and dermatology consult support by facilitating seamless eConsult image transfer

News Image

AristaMD, an innovative telehealth platform that delivers primary care providers timely and documented specialist insight, announced today the launch of an app allowing its providers to easily transfer images as part of the eConsult platform. The new web-based AristaMD Photo App is an easy-to-access, streamlined, and HIPAA-compliant solution that further enhances electronic consultation efficiency and effectiveness for cases needing visual references—most commonly the dermatology consult.

AristaMD, which launched in 2013, aims to improve healthcare outcomes by connecting its thousands of participating payers and providers to specialists through eConsults. It is already proven to deliver cost-effective, more timely access to specialty care. Providers simply use their mobile phone to take photos through the app, which are automatically and securely saved exclusively to the AristaMD platform, then continue to process their referral order and eConsult as usual.

There are fewer practicing dermatologists in rural regions. Geographic barriers compound the issue of long wait times for specialist appointments. According to a recent report,“since 2009 patient wait times for a dermatology appointment have increased by 46 percent, or from an average of 22.1 days to 32.3 days in 2017.” Timely access to care for dermatological issues can have a significant impact on patient health, as conditions include life-threatening and quickly progressing conditions such as skin cancer. Researchers have found “providing specialty treatment to a potential melanoma within 14 days of diagnosis could improve a patient’s prognosis by 20 percent.”

Use of AristaMD’s eConsults have proven highly effective with 81 percent of dermatology consults replacing a face-to-face visit with a dermatologist. The Photo App will continue improving patient access to this specialty care for even more case uses.

“Currently, patients are waiting anywhere from two to four months for a specialist appointment, but the reality is that a large portion of those specialist referrals are not needed,” said Brooke LeVasseur, CEO of AristaMD. “The new AristaMD Photo App will help PCPs continue to significantly reduce unnecessary face-to-face referrals in even more cases needing visual documentation. This marks one of many product innovations my team has been working on to expand the benefits of eConsults to as many patients as possible.”

Designed to seamlessly integrate into physician referral workflows, the platform allows payers and providers to quickly and cost-effectively launch specialist eConsults using their own specialists or those provided by AristaMD’s board-certified panel of experts. AristaMD’s platform has proven to deliver cost-effective, timely access to specialty care through eConsults, significantly reducing the need for face-to-face visits while increasing patient satisfaction.
