Veritas Collaborative Selects Industry Expert Rollyn Ornstein, M.D. as Medical Director

News Image

Dr. Ornstein is an extraordinary addition to our team of expert physicians, a clinician-scholar who brings with her knowledge and skills earned over two decades of scholarly publications and subspecialty clinical experience in the field of eating disorders.

Veritas Collaborative, a national healthcare system for the treatment of eating disorders, announced Rollyn M. Ornstein, M.D. as the new medical director of its Child & Adolescent Hospital in Durham, N.C. Ornstein is a recognized leader in eating disorder treatment and brings nearly 20 years of eating disorders experience to the organization’s senior leadership team.

In her new role, Ornstein will oversee comprehensive medical and psychiatric care provided to adolescent patients at all levels of care. She will also provide leadership and guidance to clinical staff and work cross-functionally with a variety of teams throughout the organization to ensure positive outcomes and eliminate barriers to best-practice care. As a researcher with more than 25 published works, Ornstein hopes to carry on that work as priorities allow.

“Dr. Ornstein’s expertise in eating disorder research and treatment, alongside her unwavering commitment to delivering the highest quality care to all patients, regardless of age, gender or socioeconomic status, made her a natural fit to lead our Durham adolescent medical team,” said Stacie McEntyre, founder and CEO of Veritas Collaborative.

After graduating from Brown University with a Bachelor of Science in psychology, Ornstein attended New York University School of Medicine to earn her medical degree. With a passion for the healthcare needs of teenagers, Ornstein completed her residency in pediatrics and began a fellowship in adolescent medicine at what is now Cohen Children’s Medical Center – Northwell Health. Following her fellowship, Ornstein stayed on the team as an attending physician for six years. She spent the last 11 years at Penn State Health Medical Center in Hershey, Pa., where she was the adolescent medicine director of the eating disorders partial hospitalization program. She also served as the interim division chief of adolescent medicine for three years and earned the position of full professor of pediatrics. Her multifaceted career equips her well for the road ahead.

“Dr. Ornstein is an extraordinary addition to our team of expert physicians, a clinician-scholar who brings with her knowledge and skills earned over two decades of scholarly publications and subspecialty clinical experience in the field of eating disorders. Though Veritas Collaborative is fortunate to have her as a clinical leader at our adolescent facility, it is our patients who will benefit most, with the opportunity to pursue recovery under the direction of a true leader in our field,” said Brian Keefe, M.D., chief medical officer of Veritas Collaborative.

Ornstein began her role as medical director at Veritas Collaborative’s Child & Adolescent Hospital in Durham, N.C. in September 2019 and already has plans for building upon the Veritas mission to drive the standard of care in eating disorder treatment.

“Working as part of the Veritas Collaborative team is more than a job shift for me. It’s a merging of my multiple passions for adolescent medical care, eating disorder recovery, and forward-thinking leadership,” said Ornstein. “It is extremely gratifying to help create a recovery journey using the skills I’ve honed throughout my professional career, and I’m looking forward to making a positive impact.”

Shady Grove Fertility (SGF) Partners with Breast Cancer Previvor and Model, Allyn Rose, in Support of Women Looking to Reduce the Genetic Risk of Breast Cancer

https://www.prweb.com/

Allyn Rose and Kate Devine, M.D.

“For women like Allyn, genetic testing is a safe and reliable means of reducing the possibility of having children with the genetic mutation a parent or parents may carry. At SGF, we test each embryo for the specific gene mutation and the patient may opt to use the embryos that test negative.”

The month of October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, serves as an important reminder that this year, an estimated 700,000 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer, of which, up to 10 percent of cases are linked to an inherited gene mutation. With advancements in fertility treatment and genetic testing, couples are now able to reduce the risk of passing along known genetic mutations to their children.

Shady Grove Fertility (SGF), a premier fertility and IVF center with 36 locations and home to more than 85,000 babies born, now offers patients the option to screen for over 280 recessive gene mutations, including diseases such as cystic fibrosis, Tay-Sachs disease, and spinal muscular atrophy. In addition, patients at risk for dominant gene mutations, such as breast cancer or inherited forms of colon cancer, can have individualized testing for these diseases. These tests can identify possible genetic diseases that may be passed on to their child(ren). If a genetic disease is found, the couple has the option to use in vitro fertilization (IVF) with preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic/single gene defects (PGT-M) to reduce the risk of passing that mutation onto their child(ren), thereby reducing their risk of disease in the future.

As part of its efforts to educate patients about the value of these interventions, and the availability of fertility preservation prior to any cancer treatment, SGF forged a new partnership with Allyn Rose, a breast cancer previvor, well known women’s health advocate, former Miss USA and Miss America contestant, and full-time model.

“I lost my precious mom, Judy Rose, to breast cancer when I was 16. One of the most challenging things about growing up without a mom is thinking that you’re going to have to face life’s special experiences alone. It’s especially true for a woman,” said Rose. “I understand the difficulties of having to become your own mentor, and I’m passionate about encouraging others to not allow trials in their lives to become negative defining moments, rather, use their adversity as inspiration.”

In addition to losing her mother during her teenage years, Rose also lost her grandmother and great aunt to breast cancer and knew she would want to take any measures to prevent herself and any children from suffering from the disease. As a 24 year old Miss America contestant, Rose made headlines when she made the difficult decision to undergo a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy. In 2018, Rose was selected as a Sports Illustrated Swing Search Finalist and became the first woman with a mastectomy to model for Sports Illustrated.

What Rose also knew was that her own experience gave her the motivation and platform to create a movement that encouraged other women to seek preventive healthcare. She created the #SelfExamGram social media movement, which spreads the message of early breast cancer detection and reminds women to perform monthly self breast exams.

Rose is now in the early stages of her IVF journey with Kate Devine, M.D. at SGF’s Washington, D.C. location, opting to undergo PGT-M to reduce the risk of having a child with an inherited condition.

“In the beginning, I was overwhelmed thinking about the entire process. But the team at Shady Grove Fertility, in their best Mom Voice, told me that ‘it was going to be okay’ and that I wasn’t alone.”

“This is an amazing experience to be able to help Allyn and her husband have children. For women like Allyn, genetic testing is a safe and reliable means of reducing the possibility of having children with the genetic mutation a parent or parents may carry. At SGF, we test each embryo for the specific gene mutation and the patient may opt to use the embryos that test negative,” explains Dr. Devine.

Rose is documenting her journey to motherhood with Dr. Devine and SGF in hope that it will lift the veil of the unknown associated with infertility treatment, and also serve as a reminder to women to be their own advocate. “I hope that it will ‘pay it forward’ to other women going through this and help them realize that they aren’t alone either.”

While Rose is cancer-free, SGF has a specially trained team that works specifically with people with cancer to ensure the fertility preservation process before cancer treatment can be expedited in order that cancer treatment can quickly begin. The oncofertility team at SGF helps to guide patients through each step of the treatment process, from finding ways to afford treatment to the actual medical procedure.

If you would like to learn more about SGF’s oncofertility treatment options or to schedule an appointment, please call the New Patient Center at 1-888-761-1967 or complete this brief online form.

tellic Launches drug360 Knowledge Graph to Unlock Genetic Insights from Biomedical Data

https://www.prweb.com/

tellic drug360 graph

drug360 graph provides greater confidence around the crucial decisions researchers make regarding advancing drug candidates or abandoning them, says Richard Wendell, tellic CEO. Research shows that genetic evidence can double the chances of a clinical trial’s success.

drug360 graph, a breakthrough knowledge graph product, has just been released by pharma artificial intelligence pioneer tellic. drug360 brings tellic’s expertise in biomedical language processing and machine learning to bear on biomedical big data. This new tool allows researchers to quickly uncover relationships between genes, diseases, variants, phenotypes, and other biomedical entities. Researchers and analysts can use drug360 graph to dramatically increase their efficiency searching multiple data sources and uncover valuable genetic knowledge supporting decisions around their pipelines.

“drug360 graph provides greater confidence around the crucial decisions researchers make regarding advancing drug candidates or abandoning them,” says Richard Wendell, tellic CEO. “Research shows that genetic evidence can double the chances of a clinical trial’s success.”

drug360 graph contains proprietary data on 180 million relationships between diseases, genes, gene variants, phenotypes, and other biomedical entities. This data is generated by tellic’s patent-pending deep learning algorithms, which scan biomedical text to extract entities, normalize them to the desired concept within biomedical ontologies, and quantify the strength of relationships. Quantifying the strength of these relationships is crucial, because it helps remove the “noise” from the signal. “tellic’s proprietary deep learning technologies incorporate biomedical context which results in high quality genetic evidence data that can improve clinical trial success,” says Wendell.

With drug360 graph, researchers can:

  • Immediately be up and running with a biomedical knowledge graph pre-populated with 180 million genetic relationships
  • Easily import their internal data into tellic’s proprietary data to create a Knowledge Graph that is unique to their organization
  • Quickly identify unexpected genetic linkages to inform target selection, clinical trial design, BD and biotech investment decisions.
  • Drill down and search genetic relationships of interest to pinpoint each sentence in the source data that was used to generate the relationship
  • Export search results into a CSV or Excel for further analysis

drug360 currently contains millions of additional relationships between genes or gene variants than those found in public databases. Available as software as a service, the product is easy to use and is well supported.

Cardiothoracic Imaging Publishes Special Report on Vaping

https://www.prweb.com/

Chest X-ray in a 24-year-old man with a history of e-cigarette use

We encourage the medical imaging community to produce scientific evidence and medical knowledge to help advance our collective understanding of the effects of e-cigarette use on the lungs and other organ systems.

Radiology: Cardiothoracic Imaging has published a special report on lung injury resulting from the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), or “vaping.” Authors Suhny Abbara, M.D., FACR, MSCCT and Fernando Uliana Kay, M.D., Ph.D., from the Department of Radiology at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, aim to raise awareness among radiologists and other medical professionals on how to identify e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI).

“Radiologists will continue to play an important role in recognizing this emerging entity,” said Dr. Abbara, who is also the editor of Radiology: Cardiothoracic Imaging. “We encourage the medical imaging community to produce scientific evidence and medical knowledge to help advance our collective understanding of the effects of e-cigarette use on the lungs and other organ systems.”

E-cigarettes act by delivering nicotine, flavorings and other additives in aerosol form. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 9 million adults in the U.S. use e-cigarettes, and vaping has become especially popular among teens. The 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey reported that in 2018 more than 3.6 million middle and high school students were using e-cigarettes.

The CDC, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and state and local health departments have started an investigation into the recent outbreak of lung injury associated with the use of e-cigarettes. As of October 22, 2019, 1,604 cases have been reported from 49 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and one U.S. territory. Thirty-four cases have resulted in death. However, these numbers likely underestimate the true incidence and prevalence of disease due to lack of recognition and reporting of vaping-associated lung injury.

In the special report, Drs. Abbara and Kay summarize recent cases from the literature and illustrate some of the radiographic and CT findings of lung injury with a clinical case of a 24-year-old male patient with past medical history of asthma, who presented with shortness of breath, productive cough, chest pain and fever for one week. The patient reported current daily use of e-cigarettes (with tobacco) and marijuana, without substantial change in recent vaping habits. He had high white cell and platelet counts. His chest X-ray showed ground-glass and reticular, or netlike, opacities in both lungs.

CT findings included ground glass opacities and pulmonary consolidation with relative subpleural sparing. Histologic specimens obtained from the right lower lobe at biopsy were suggestive of lipoid pneumonia. The patient was given steroids with a presumptive diagnosis of lung injury associated with e-cigarette use.

“The diagnosis of lung injury due to e-cigarette use should be a differential possibility in patients presenting with bilateral lung opacities on radiographs or ground-glass opacities on chest CT images and exposure to e-cigarette products within 90 days of the presentation,” Dr. Abbara said.

The epidemiologic case definition of lung injury associated with e-cigarette use for surveillance purposes includes the presence of all the following criteria: use of e-cigarette or dabbing (butane hash oils) within 90 days before symptom onset, presence of pulmonary opacities on chest radiographs or ground-glass opacities on chest CT images, absence of pulmonary infection at initial workup, and no evidence of alternative plausible diagnoses.

The report outlines that research into vaping-associated lung injury should be approached as a team effort by members of multiple specialties, including pathologists, epidemiologists, pulmonologists and emergency physicians, but highlights the critical role of radiologists.

“It is crucial that radiologists drive some of the research initiatives to better understand the mechanisms of disease presentation, facilitating the diagnosis and management of these patients,” Dr. Abbara said.

“Electronic Cigarette or Vaping-associated Lung Injury (EVALI): The Tip of the Iceberg.”

Radiology: Cardiothoracic Imaging is edited by Suhny Abbara, M.D., University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, and owned and published by the Radiological Society of North America, Inc. (https://pubs.rsna.org/cardiothoracic-imaging)

  • Kids with highest IQs at three, had the most words at one and two
  • Language learning is cumulative – early words => early sentences => language & reading
  • Most kids maintain their verbal advantage through childhood
  • Creative pretend play that sparks story-telling can advance future literacy

Sherry established the PAL Award to identify unique toys, games and books that through their design, quality and character, encourage play that advances language. PAL winners in the hands of kids, spark fun and creative play with lots of talk. Such toys, recognized on the basis of her child development expertise, are complemented by practical coaching in her blog, showing parents and caregivers how to get the most from toys, games and books to build language and underlying cognitive skills.

First UV-C LED Product Certified to NSF/ANSI 55-2019 Standard

AquiSense Technologies, the global leader in UV-C LED water disinfection technology, claims the world’s first NSF Component Certification to the newly updated NSF/ANSI 55-2019 Standard for its PearlAqua Micro range. The PearlAqua Micro was certified by NSF International in compliance with the new NSF/ANSI 55 Standard for Material Safety and Structural Integrity.

The PearlAqua Micro is the world’s smallest UV-C LED water treatment system, with tens of thousands of units shipped this year is a clear market leading product. The PearlAqua Micro range includes 5 discrete model sizes offering flow rates of up-to 8 lpm and 3rd party validation disinfection performance of up-to 6-log (99.9999%) pathogen reduction. The PearlAqua Micro range is designed to be integrated at the point of use and offers 12 or 24 VDC input voltage, automatic on/off control, multiple sensing/alarm options, and customizable housing options. It is trusted by leading OEM brands globally and manufactured in the AquiSense Kentucky, USA facility to ISO-9001:2015 quality standards.

The NSF/ANSI 55-2019 Standard has recently been updated to address the unique technical differences of LED technology compared to traditional mercury gas-discharge lamp technology. Following very shortly will be microbiological performance certification by NSF. This will provide additional verification to the already completed 3rd party microbiological validation completed on the PearlAqua Micro range, showing supplemental bacterial treatment of drinking water supplies. This provides a strong final barrier and “last-mile” protection to many applications.

“Obtaining the NSF/ANSI 55-2019 certification is yet another instance where PearlAqua is leading the way for UV-C LED technology,” said Oliver Lawal, AquiSense CEO. “Prior to September 2019, there was no specific standard for LED technology in water treatment applications. Our team has worked for years supporting NSF International to ensure the new 55 Standard is robust and future-proof. We look forward to engaging OEM manufacturers globally in incorporating the PearlAqua component for maximum human and environmental protection,” concluded Lawal.
