Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Adds a New Golden Retriever to Its Hospital Staff

“There are numerous ways our therapy dogs help patients throughout Memorial Healthcare System, whether it’s taking their minds off being sick, keeping them calm during a painful procedure or even helping in a rehabilitation setting,” said Tracy Meltzer, director of nursing.

Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital recently announced the newest member of its staff, Freedom, a Golden Retriever and a member of the Animal Assisted Therapy program at Memorial Healthcare System. In his new role, Freedom will help children and their families deal with the stress and anxiety that may be associated with a stay in the hospital or a medical procedure.

According to Caitlin Stella, CEO of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Freedom is truly a part of the care team. Freedom is available when a patient needs extra comfort or support, he can chase a ball, help patients with their shoes, open doors and let patients take him for a walk. Families and hospital staff also benefit from taking a moment out of their day to unwind in the company of these dedicated dogs. Including Freedom, all six dogs in the Animal Assisted Therapy program have important jobs within each Memorial hospital.

“This program is such an important part of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s philosophy to heal through the power of play,” said Stella. “We see young children who actually are excited to be patients because they get to visit with their favorite four-legged friends.”

The Memorial Animal Assisted Therapy program was created in 2009 because the team at Memorial Healthcare System recognized the need to physically and emotionally support patients during their treatments with the benefits of this type of therapy. These specially trained therapy dogs have helped to create a powerful healing environment that aims at motivating and encouraging patients to reach their goals.

There are currently six service dogs on staff throughout the Memorial hospitals. The dogs are all Golden Retrievers that come from a special service dog breeder in Connecticut. They are trained since birth to respond to 80 commands and each have their own special roles depending on where they work within the hospital system. Selected Memorial staff members receive special training and must pass a stringent test to work with the therapy dogs. Each therapy dog reports to work with a home handler and then goes home with the handler to rest after a full-time day of making a difference.

“There are numerous ways our therapy dogs help patients throughout Memorial Healthcare System, whether it’s taking their minds off of being sick, keeping them calm during a painful procedure or even helping in a rehabilitation setting,” said Tracy Meltzer, director of nursing. “Freedom is young and so full of energy; he will definitely be a fun addition to the program for everyone to enjoy.”

New Method For Tooth Repair Found

A new study from the University of Plymouth has uncovered a connection between a specific gene and how that gene activates stem cell activity and tissue regeneration. The gene Dlk1 is a transmembrane protein that has a main function of repeating epidermal cell growth. What has been found, by Dr. Bing Hu and his research team at the University of Plymouth, is that mesenchymal stem cells (the cells that make up skeletal tissue) are essential in the creation of the hard tissue that covers up the body of a tooth. They are able to be replicated when the gene Dlk1 is found present and abundant in the mother tissue of the cells. Further tests are required before human testing is realistic, but, with these new findings, there is a realistic possibility of regenerating tooth cells in subjects with major oral disease and degeneration.

Dr. Borzoo Ahmadi, a renowned cosmetic dentist in Beverly Hills, notes how these findings have wide ranging impacts in Cosmetic Dentistry. “These findings are especially positive when it comes to the future of cosmetic dentistry. As we continue to find out how to utilize this regenerative process, dentists need to educate themselves on the processes,” Dr. Ahmadi stated.

This methodology allows patients to develop what he dubs “molecular beauty”, improving your visible appearance but also your internal health on a cellular level.

ABOUT DR. MUDIT ARORA

Dr. Arora has extensive training in anti-aging treatments and strategies from a fellowship in anti-aging and regenerative medicine. To help patients reverse signs of aging and look their best, he performs therapies such as wrinkle-relieving Botox® injections, skin rejuvenation for all skin types via cutting-edge laser therapies, and hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers. He offers non-surgical body contouring and laser hair removal in his office, as well as regenerative treatments such as PRP injections for hair loss, to name a few.

Dr. Arora is also a board-certified Internist trained in Functional Medicine and Bio-Identical Hormone replacement (BHRT). Dr. Arora dives deep into the biochemistry and genetics of each individual patient to treat the root causes of disease and symptoms.

Dr. Arora earned his medical degree from Windsor University School of Medicine. He then moved back to his home state of New Jersey to complete his residency in internal medicine at Morristown Medical Center, an affiliate of the nearby Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. After completing residency and starting his career in Internal Medicine, Dr. Arora eventually realized that he was in the same situation as many of the patients he was seeing – unable to sleep and chronically fatigued. He found himself in the office of an Integrative & Functional Medicine doctor who worked with him to identify and correct the root cause of these imbalances. It was then that Dr. Arora decided to make the transition from conventional medicine into Anti-Aging, Integrative & Functional Medicine– so he could help improve the health of patients that are living with the same unanswered questions as he was, and assisting those patients in becoming the most youthful versions of themselves.

Arora holds memberships with the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, and the American Medical Association. He is also an avid member of an organization called BodyLogicMD, a physicians’ network for specialists of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy and integrative medicine.

Frederick Health Announces Purchase of State Farm Campus

News Image

Tom Kleinhanzl, CEO and President of Frederick Health shares, “Healthcare innovation and technology continue to evolve at a rapid pace and Frederick Health Village will be a key platform for us to launch future initiatives.

We are pleased to announce that Frederick Health has selected the State Farm campus as a new destination for healthcare services. This strategic purchase will ensure that Frederick Health can effectively and efficiently meet the growing needs of our community for years to come. The new location will be named Frederick Health Village.

Frederick Health Village will support our population health strategy to provide wellness services and outpatient medical care, enabling us to meet our mission “to positively impact the well-being of every individual in our community.”

One early impact of this acquisition will be the opportunity to decompress our “landlocked” 7th Street campus to allow for future service growth and expansion of acute care services at the hospital. In addition, this move will make parking more available and simplifies access to hospital services.

We will relocate Frederick Health Home Care (formerly known as FMH Home Health) and Frederick Health Hospice (formerly known as Hospice of Frederick County) to Frederick Health Village to allow for future expansion.

A new consolidated Frederick Health Call Center will be located at the site to improve access to our services for the community. Components of Information Technology services will also be relocated on the new campus.

Future opportunities for this space may include Patient Education, Community Event Services, and Employee Education and Training. We will explore the development of community and wellness-based programs through public and private partnerships.

“We have a rare opportunity to capitalize on this special property, located slightly over three miles away from our hospital campus,” said Tom Kleinhanzl, CEO and President of Frederick Health. “Healthcare innovation and technology continue to evolve at a rapid pace and Frederick Health Village will be a key platform for us to launch future initiatives.”

Same-Day Tooth Replacement Made Possible in Chattanooga, TN at Chattanooga Periodontics and Dental Implants

Drs. Elizabeth Randall and Charles Felts, Periodontists in Chattanooga, TN

Drs. Elizabeth Randall and Charles Felts Provide Immediate Tooth Replacement in Chattanooga, TN

Being able to smile confidently and not have to worry about the temporary devices I had in my mouth falling out is priceless.

Patients with decayed or missing teeth can receive a new replacement tooth or a full arch of new teeth in just one day at Chattanooga Periodontics and Dental Implants. The practice offers tooth extractions, dental implant placement, and immediate teeth all in the same appointment at their Chattanooga, TN office. This modern teeth-in-a-day technique prevents patients from having to go another day without a complete, natural-looking smile.

“Being able to smile confidently and not have to worry about the temporary devices I had in my mouth falling out is priceless. With that device, it was still hard to eat because of the fear of it coming out while I eat,” said Aaron, a dental implant patient of Chattanooga Periodontics and Dental Implants. “I feel a whole lot more comfortable with my dental implant now.”

Dental implants are now the preferred tooth replacement solution. They can often last patients for decades and they restore virtually full function to the mouth. Composed of an implant post that is inserted into the jawbone, a dental crown or bridge that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth, and an abutment that connects the two, dental implants are often considered the gold standard in tooth replacement solutions today.

Dental implants, although the ideal solution, often require months of healing time before a restoration can be placed, causing many to continue to live with a gap in their smiles even after implant posts are placed. Now, with the teeth-in-a-day process, Drs. Charles Felts and Elizabeth Randall perform tooth extractions of damaged or decayed teeth, place dental implant posts, and load a temporary crown or bridge all in the same day. Due to advancements in periodontology and the specialized training of these skilled periodontists, patients, whether they’re missing a single tooth or full mouth of teeth, never have to go another day with a complete smile again.

Although temporary, the acrylic provisional tooth replacement provided the same day as surgery looks and functions just like natural teeth. The provisional is secured in place while the jaw heals and a permanent restoration is created. Patients will then return to the practice to receive their permanent fixed tooth or arch after healing and fabrication is complete to ensure the most lasting and healthy smile.

Chattanooga Periodontics and Dental Implants is a family-owned periodontal practice that specializes in periodontics, dental implants, oral plastic surgery, and laser gum surgery. Board-certified periodontists, Dr. Felts and Dr. Randall help restore patients’ smiles through cutting-edge technology and over 30 years of dental experience. Those interested in receiving a teeth-in-a-day dental implant tooth replacement treatment or in need of a tooth extraction are encouraged to call the practice at 423-756-2450 or schedule a consultation online at http://www.chattanoogaperio.com.

Dr. Steven Krakora, Oral Surgeon serving Steubenville, OH and Washington, PA

Dr. Steven Krakora, Esteemed Oral Surgeon, Opens New Practice in Steubenville, OH

I really can’t emphasize enough how much this All-on-4 procedure changed every aspect of my life, especially my health.

Oral surgeons, Drs. Steven Krakora and Brandon Humberger, announce the opening of their second practice in Steubenville, OH. At this new location, the doctors offer All-on-4® full arch dental implants, wisdom teeth extractions, and bone grafting. Their practice, Western Pennsylvania & Ohio Valley Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, is one of only a few practices in the area that offer these services, let alone at the level of expertise that these oral surgeons provide.

Oral surgeons undergo extensive training in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. This education gives an oral surgeon more precision and detail when it comes to treatments such as tooth extractions and dental implant placement. Plus, their education and experience keeps them better equipped to resolve any issues that may arise during treatments.

Drs. Krakora and Humberger offer their expertise in oral surgery, paired with the most advanced treatment options, to give patients comfortable, long lasting results. One cutting-edge treatment that these doctors offer is the All-on-4 full arch dental implant solution. With All-on-4, the oral surgeons strategically place four implants within a patient’s jawbone. The doctor then fixes a full arch of new, teeth to these implants. The final prosthetic not only looks like a natural arch of teeth, but functions like one as well.

The All-on-4 solution restores patient oral health, which effects a patient’s overall health. With All-on-4 dental implants, patients can eat all of the foods they love again. The implants also stimulate the jawbone, so patients do not experience more bone loss after the treatment. Plus, the All-on-4 procedure only takes a few hours, allowing patients to leave the same day with a full prosthetic arch.

Drs. Krakora and Humberger understand that a caring surgical team paired with surgical expertise promotes the best results for their patients. They also emphasize how new teeth creates new lives for their patients. This was the case with Michael, an All-on-4 patient of Dr. Krakora’s. “I could see my health deteriorating, simply because my teeth weren’t working,” Michael explains. “I really can’t emphasize enough how much this All-on-4 procedure changed every aspect of my life, especially my health.”

Are They A Fad or Do They Have Staying Power

“First and foremost taste is king when considering entering the plant-based foods category,” says Darren Seifer, NPD food and beverage industry analyst.

The rapid growth of plant-based foods at retail and on restaurant menus has many in the food and foodservice industries questioning if the interest in plant-based food is a passing fad or a long-term trend. A new study by The NPD Group addresses this question and finds that the answer depends on the consumer and their reasons for consuming plant-based foods in the first place.

Millennials, born 1981-1996, are the top consumers of plant-based meat alternatives, finds the NPD study, The Future of Plant-based Snapshot. This generational group has adopted plant-based meat alternatives as a way to indulge sensibly while addressing their long-term health goals and animal treatment concerns. Gen Xers, born 1965-1980, are also a core consumer group of plant-based meat alternatives, and because many in this group are parents of Gen Zs, born 1997 to present, they’ve raised their Gen Z children on plant-based beverages and foods. Boomers are decelerating their consumption of plant-based meat alternatives but are the top consumers of plant-based dairy alternatives.

Since the core consumer groups for plant-based dairy and meat alternatives are younger, NPD forecasts that plant-based foods, to varying degrees, do have staying power. NPD’s study also finds that plant-based food consumption is not about rejecting traditional protein sources as about 90 percent of plant-based users are neither vegetarian nor vegan, noting that consumers want options.

“First and foremost taste is king when considering entering the plant-based foods category,” says Darren Seifer, NPD food and beverage industry analyst. “Attributes such as health and convenience go far to drive consumption, but if the flavor profile falls below consumers’ expectations, then the product will likely have a short run. Whether it’s marketing a plant-based burger that reproduces the meat-eating experience or a dairy alternative that has the taste and texture of milk, consumers now have substitution without sacrifice.”

Kyowa Hakko’s exhibit was buzzing with excitement this year as New York Times best-selling author Max Lugavere was at the booth on Thursday to continue his educational series with Kyowa Hakko’s branded brain health ingredient, Cognizin® Citicoline. On the same day, Kyowa Hakko also held an intense, interactive ‘Tap to Win’ Tap Test competition at their booth, drawing a crowd of intrigued industry professionals to test how many ‘taps’ they could achieve in 20 seconds. The Cognizin® branded “Tap to Win” gaming app was inspired by a recent study that used the Finger Tap Test to reveal that supplementing with Cognizin® Citicoline over a 30-day period supported improved attentional abilities, psychomotor speed and inhibition levels in healthy adolescent males (McGlade, et al., 2015). The competition was fierce as the top three winners, which ranked from 201 taps, 199 taps, and 187 taps, excitedly took home prizes such as an Apple Watch, Air Pods and a $100 Apple gift certificate.

A champagne toast and celebratory cupcakes wrapped up an exciting day.
