Kansas City University College of Dental Medicine Nears $30M in Fundraising

https://www.prweb.com/

KCU College of Dental Medicine rendering

“The four-state area faces an oral health care crisis and a troubling shortage of dentists. Through this new college of dental medicine, we hope to expand access to oral health care for those who need it most.”

In just four months since announcing plans for a new College of Dental Medicine (CDM) on its Joplin, Mo., campus, Kansas City University (KCU) has now secured three-quarters of its $40 million philanthropic goal. This fundraising includes a recently announced pledge of $10 million from the Joplin Regional Medical School Alliance (JRMSA); a $10 million gift from Harry M. Cornell; a $6 million gift from The Sunderland Foundation; and gifts from Neosho banker Rudy Farber, The Farber Foundation and Larry McIntire, DO. Additionally, the University Board of Trustees has committed $40 million towards the $80 million project. The KCU College of Dental Medicine will provide an opportunity to educate dental students to meet the critical oral health-care needs in the surrounding underserved region of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

“KCU is proud to have reached this milestone so quickly and is grateful to these generous benefactors for their support of this important effort,” said Marc B. Hahn, DO, president and CEO of KCU. “The four-state area faces an oral health care crisis and a troubling shortage of dentists. Through this new college of dental medicine, we hope to expand access to oral health care for those who need it most.”

In 2015, the community based foundation JRMSA helped to raise over $40 million to support the construction of KCU’s Farber-McIntire Campus (KCU-Joplin) and the university’s second College of Osteopathic Medicine location.

“Alliance members, donors and the community at-large retain a vital interest in the new medical school and its students,” said McIntire, president of JRMSA. “KCU’s recent efforts to develop a KCU College of Dental Medicine has been embraced as an important part of our mission. The success of KCU’s medical school campus in Joplin contributes greatly to the confidence that the College of Dental Medicine on the same campus will also be successful.”

A $6 million grant from The Sunderland Foundation was the lead gift to KCU to develop the CDM. This gift will be commemorated with The Sunderland Skyway Bridge, an elevated walkway connecting KCU’s future College of Dental Medicine with its current College of Osteopathic Medicine on the Joplin, Mo. campus.

“We focus on the bricks and mortar because they represent the rich history of our company, Ash Grove Cement,” said Kent Sunderland, president of the Sunderland Foundation Board of Trustees. “Yet we keep in mind the people who will be served in those facilities and we are happy to support an initiative that will result in people in the Joplin region living healthier lives.”

Mr. Cornell’s $10 million gift is the second donation to KCU in the past five years. His first gift of $10 million was instrumental in the development of the KCU-Joplin College of Osteopathic Medicine. Mr. Cornell’s generosity will be honored by naming the new College of Dental Medicine building The Harry M. Cornell Dental Education Center.

According to the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the majority of counties within a 125-mile radius of Joplin are Dental Health Professional Shortage Areas (DHPSAs). In Missouri, 376 dentists are currently needed to remove the DHPSA designation, with Arkansas needing 105 dentists, Kansas needing 103, and Oklahoma requiring 166. What’s more, there are currently only three dental schools in the region: two in Missouri and one in Oklahoma, with none in either Kansas or Arkansas.

“Two years ago, we answered the call to meet the growing primary care and rural health needs of the region by establishing a medical school campus in Joplin,” said Hahn. “We know that oral health profoundly impacts overall health. Having a CDM physically located next to our College of Osteopathic Medicine provides a tremendous opportunity to integrate oral health into overall health to make the broadest impact and improve the well-being of the communities we serve.”

KCU anticipates breaking ground on the facility in 2020, with plans to welcome the first class of 80 students in 2022. A nationwide search for a dean of the College of Dental Medicine is currently underway.

Skin Care Institute, Oklahoma’s Top-Rated Medical Spa, Now Offering Advanced Injectables Treatments with Microtox® and BeautiPHIcation™.

Skin Care Institute is thrilled to expand its injectable service offerings with MicroTox® and BeautiPHIcation™, two advanced, state-of-the-art methods for administering age-defying injectables treatments.

Renowned for their injectables treatments and one of the top 250 Allergan accounts in the country, Skin Care Institute is thrilled to expand its injectable service offerings with MicroTox® and BeautiPHIcation™, two advanced, state-of-the-art methods for administering age-defying injectables treatments. Skin Care Institute’s master-level injectors have undergone advanced training to administer these state-of-the-art injectables services.

MicroTox involves administering “micro” injections of a diluted form of Botox® into the shallow layers of the skin, as opposed to traditional Botox injections, which target deeper muscles. When Botox is injected into the shallow areas of the face and neck, it provides a “shrink wrap” effect to the skin, causing lines and wrinkles to tighten and smooth out for a younger-looking appearance within minutes. Botox typically takes four to 14 days to take full effect, but MicroTox affords immediate benefits, improving skin texture and radiance, smoothing horizontal creases, reducing vertical neck banding, shrinking pore size and more.

Pioneered by Dr. Arthur Swift, BeautiPHIcation is a precise method of injecting based on “phi,” a mathematical concept based on symmetry that was developed by Leonardo Da Vinci and is known as “the golden ratio.” Applying phi measurements to the face, Skin Care Institute’s master injectors can administer the most balanced and natural-looking dermal fillers to restore each patient’s unique ideal of beauty.

In addition to MicroTox and BeautiPHIcation, Skin Care Institute offers award-winning injectables treatments with Botox® and the complete suite of Juvéderm® dermal fillers, including Volbella®, Voluma® and Vollure XC™. For non-invasive body contouring, Skin Care Institute offers CoolSculpting®, the world’s most popular non-invasive fat reduction treatment, and Emsculpt® non-invasive muscle-toning. Other acclaimed treatments include Kybella®, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) with SkinPen® micro-needling, PRP hair restoration, Ultherapy® skin tightening, Emsella® for urinary incontinence, Clear + Brilliant® skin rejuvenation, Fraxel® Dual laser skin resurfacing, HydraFacial MD® Elite, clinical-grade chemical peels, laser hair removal, photofacials, and Botox® and dermal fillers.

Skin Care Institute also offers a leading selection of spa treatments, including facials, body waxing, lash and brow services, physician-grade and organic skin care products and much more. Four Chicago tenth-grade students honored for their powerful testimonies at Peer Health Exchange’s Celebrating Youth Voices

Whether advocating for a friend, communicating about consent or making a real-time decision about their mental health—four Chicago tenth-grade students were celebrated for their powerful testimonies November 1, describing the very real choices they face as young people, and how Peer Health Exchange encouraged them to think differently about their health.

Celebrating Youth Voices brought together the city’s philanthropic, education, and youth advocate leaders, in support of Peer Health Exchange’s work throughout Chicago. The event featured remarks from CICS Northtown Academy student Yareli Avila, a Peer Health Exchange participant in the 2018-2019 program year.

“Consent is a broad term so it doesn’t necessarily only apply to sex,” said Avila. “I recently talked to a friend who explained how her boyfriend wanted to take things even further than just kissing. She said she wasn’t ready for that, but by her denying his request he made her feel like she didn’t actually love him. I immediately remembered my PHE class and how pressuring someone into doing something is abusing our consent.”

Avila went on to share how participating in Peer Health Exchange shifted her mindset, and encouraged her to advocate for healthy behaviors in her community.

The celebration held at Kirkland & Ellis, LLP, marked the beginning of Peer Health Exchange’s program year. Attendees also heard from Peer Health Exchange Chicago Board Member Dr. Candice Norcott, Licensed Clinical Psychologist Specializing in Reproductive Health.

“Essay writing and writing, in general, is a tool that is often used to facilitate learning and recovery,” said Norcott. “Narratives have power. In the telling, you can see perspectives and paths that you perhaps did not see before. They offer the opportunity for teachable moments that can enhance the understanding of your struggles, and help reduce stigma from others.”

Other students honored for their work included Ayobami Omidiji for her essay on mental health; Keshawn Price who wrote about gender identity in support of inclusive spaces; and Zaria Washington who described the importance of safe sex practices.

Since 2007, Peer Health Exchange has delivered effective skills-based health education to more than 36,000 ninth graders across Chicago. This year, we will provide our health curriculum to 3,600 students in more than 25 Chicago Public Schools high schools. Our valued partners are committed to bridging gaps youth experience in accessing high-quality, free, and affordable healthcare. Our partners include Northwestern University, University of Chicago, the University of Illinois at Chicago, CPS, and hospitals and community health centers across the city.

Peer Health Exchange is grateful for our event sponsor Kirkland & Ellis LLP.

About Peer Health Exchange

Peer Health Exchange’s mission is to empower young people with the knowledge, skills, and resources to make healthy decisions. We do this by training college student volunteers to teach a skills-based health curriculum in under-resourced high schools across the country.

Shriners Hospitals for Children and Spirit of Children Help Create Halloween Magic for Patients

News Image

Batman at the Salt Lake City Shriners Hospital

This Halloween season, Shriners Hospitals for Children® and the heart of Spirit Halloween – Spirit of Children – are making a difference in the lives of children.

Since 2007, Spirit of Children has donated more than $4.6 million to Shriners Hospitals for Children to go toward their local child life departments – after this year, that number will be more than $5 million. Each year, the Spirit of Children crew also visits Shriners Hospitals throughout the country to help host Halloween parties for their patients that include free costumes, food, crafts and games.

These seasonal efforts make hospitals less scary for kids and their families through support of the child life departments at the program’s partner hospitals, which include Shriners Hospitals for Children. Since its inception, Spirit of Children has raised more than $55 million for hospitals across the United States and Mexico. Donations stay within local communities, and 100% of every dollar donated supports the partner hospitals’ child life departments.

Shriners Hospitals for Children — Salt Lake City hosts an extra special Halloween event for its patients each year, where wheelchairs are transformed into magical costumes during their annual wheelchair costume clinic. This year, with help from Spirit of Children, hospital staff and volunteers turned the wheelchairs of a record 32 patients into customized Halloween costumes. From Santa in his sleigh to Aladdin on a magic carpet, patients were all smiles at the hospital’s fourth annual event while transforming their wheelchairs into anything their hearts desired.

The Salt Lake City Shriners Hospital staff created the costume clinic in response to feedback from parents that door-to-door trick-or-treating poses challenges for children with physical disabilities. This event helps level the playing field for children in wheelchairs living with conditions such as spina bifida and skeletal dysplasia who come to Shriners Hospitals for care. Other costume creations have included a Batmobile, Millennium Falcon and boat to take Moana across the sea. The clinic is an example of Shriners Hospitals’ wrap-around care that goes beyond the physical needs to meet the child’s social and emotional needs, as well.

We thank Sprit of Halloween and their program Spirit of Children for their support of Shriners Hospitals for Children. Hosting these memorable annual Halloween events for patients is just one of the ways Shriners Hospitals for Children is helping to provide hope and healing to children every day.

ChronWell to Present at the National Workers’ Compensation and Disability Conference

News Image

“Technology in the workers’ comp industry has not advanced as quickly as in commercial health. There’s great value in early intervention and advocacy programs, but it’s important to marry that with technology,” said Dr. Deitz.

ChronWell, a technology-enabled injury management program for the workers’ compensation industry, announced today that Dr. David Deitz, Chief Medical Advisor, will present at the National Workers’ Compensation and Disability Conference at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, NV on November 6-8, 2019.

Dr. Deitz and Santiago Martin Jr., CEO of Trilogy Personnel & Land Management, will lead a session titled, “Leveraging Technology to Connect Pre- and Post-Loss Strategies.” In this presentation, they’ll discuss an agricultural employer’s case examples, highlighting how they are benefiting from the use of ChronWell’s technology platform coupled with human empathy in their workers’ compensation program. In particular, they will focus on the need for predictive models to identify risk factors and how leveraging intelligence gathered through cloud and mobile technologies paired with artificial intelligence allows companies to respond quicker to the needs of injured workers and other stakeholders in the claims process. This gives employers the ability to mitigate risk, efficiently manage injuries, and build advocacy programs that improve injured worker outcomes.

“Technology in the workers’ comp industry has not advanced as quickly as in commercial health. There’s great value in early intervention and advocacy programs, but it’s important to marry that with technology,” said Dr. Deitz. “Technology has an important role to play not only in administering and managing these programs, but in providing employers with different options and data management to improve outcomes, decrease litigation and boost overall satisfaction.”

Dr. Deitz has 25 years’ experience in managed medical care, healthcare outcomes evaluation and reporting, and utilization management systems in both workers’ compensation and group health. In addition to being ChronWell’s Chief Medical Advisor, he is also the Principal of David Deitz & Associates in Westport, MA. Dr. Deitz completed post-graduate training at the University of Miami and Harvard Medical School and is board-certified in Internal Medicine.

The session will take place on Wednesday, November 6 at 2:30pm in the Islander room of Mandalay Bay. In addition, ChronWell will be exhibiting on the floor at booth 1109. To set up an appointment at the conference, email chronwell@matternow.com.
