Proscia’s Concentriq® Dx Receives CE Mark for Primary Diagnosis

Proscia®, a leading provider of digital pathology software, has received a CE Mark for its Concentriq Dx solution for use in primary diagnosis. With this certification, Proscia accelerates its entry into the diagnostic pathology market in Europe and other key geographies globally to help laboratories keep pace with the rising cancer burden.

The CE Mark indicates that Concentriq Dx complies with the European In Vitro Diagnostic Regulations. “This underscores Proscia’s commitment to providing high-quality solutions to meet the needs of pathology laboratories and cancer patients in the EU and affiliated countries,” said Natalia Remmel, Proscia’s Director of Quality and Regulatory Affairs.

“Europe is plagued by a chronic shortage of pathologists,” explained Steve Holloway, Company Director of Signify Research at the Cranfield Innovation Centre in the United Kingdom. “In a recent workforce census conducted by the Royal College of Pathologists, only three percent of UK pathology departments reported having enough staff to meet clinical demand. Shortages like these are being blamed for slowing the rate at which cancer biopsies are diagnosed, ultimately delaying cancer treatment and potentially sacrificing patient outcomes as a result.”

Concentriq Dx enables pathologists to make a primary diagnosis of diseases like cancer from digitized images of patients’ tissue biopsies, helping laboratories to deliver more timely, higher quality diagnoses. By centering the practice of pathology around images instead of physical glass slides, Concentriq Dx automates time-consuming and error-prone manual tasks and streamlines access to specialized expertise.

“With Concentriq Dx, we are laying the foundation for the next generation of digital pathology at a crucial time,” said David West, CEO of Proscia. “The challenges faced in Europe are reflective of global trends and highlight the need to accelerate diagnostic workflows and improve accuracy. Concentriq Dx can drive costs out of the health system, relieve overburdened pathology laboratories, and, most importantly, quickly get accurate answers to physicians and their patients. With this CE Mark, Proscia is accelerating its entry into the worldwide clinical market.”

Concentriq Dx works with any scanner and laboratory information system (LIS), offering seamless integrations with 3DHISTECH, Hamamatsu, and Leica among other leading solutions. It also offers flexible cloud and on-premise deployment options to meet the current and future needs of laboratories transitioning to modern, image-centric digital pathology. To learn more about using Concentriq Dx in your laboratory, join Proscia’s demonstration webinar on Thursday 21 November at 14:00 GMT.*

In Response to Health Risks, IPVideo Corporation Adds THC Detection to the HALO IOT Smart Sensor

News Image

In direct response to schools’ pleas for assistance my team added THC detection capability to the vape detection sensors in HALO. We are trying to do our part to assist our districts in fighting this epidemic.

IPVideo Corporation, a leading manufacturer of IoT sensor technology and passive visual weapons detection systems, is proud to announce their HALO IoT Smart Sensor detects vaping with THC.

Today is known as National “legalization day” and is celebrated by the cannabis industry. On November 6th, 2012, Colorado and Washington both passed recreational cannabis laws. A dark side to the celebration of the legalized industry are the deaths attributed to the unregulated vaping industry and mixing with THC. The CDC is recommending against using e-cigarette or vaping products that contain THC. School districts are utilizing HALO to help deter and educate students on the risks of vaping and vaping with THC.

“With the legalization of marijuana, school districts across the country are dealing with the disruption and health scare of vaping with THC.” states Frank Jacovino, Vice President of Product Development IPVideo Corporation. “In direct response to schools’ pleas for assistance my team added THC detection capability to the vape detection sensors in HALO. We are trying to do our part to assist our districts in fighting this epidemic.”

HALO IOT Smart Sensor has the unique ability to provide IoT sensing as event-based triggers to provide security in privacy concern areas where traditional security cameras and solutions are not practical. As an environmental monitoring tool, HALO uses multiple sensors together in a single intelligent platform to learn, analyze and create event alerts. HALO is the only product to detect vape and vape with THC. In addition, it can detect flammables, hazardous chemicals, air quality and changes in temperature and humidity. HALO can also detect noise level fluctuations and analyze room occupancy through light detection.

When HALO was designed, it was intended for limited applications doing vape detection and audio analytics to combat the vaping and active shooter epidemics in k12 schools. It has since grown to address multiple areas of concern across almost every vertical market including hospitality, healthcare, property management, commercial, government agencies and campus facilities.

Understanding and Preventing Transplant Rejection with Stanley C. Jordan, MD

News Image

Lori is excited about these new advances. “Kidney transplantation is the treatment of choice for many people with end-stage kidney disease. It’s great to know there is innovative treatment and monitoring methods to help us keep our gift of life for a long time.”

Stanley C. Jordan, MD, joins Lori Hartwell, Founder of the Renal Support Network (RSN) in an episode of RSN’s KidneyTalk™ podcast, to discuss advances in transplantation that will help recipients give their new kidney a long and healthy life.

Dr. Jordan is the Director of Nephrology and Transplant Immunology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and a pioneering kidney transplant researcher. Lori has known him since her childhood, and calls him a “genius.” From the beginning of his career, he was fascinated by immunology research and wanted to understand how it could be applied to problems with transplant rejection. In this episode of KidneyTalk, Dr. Jordan delves deeply into the role of antibodies—how they affect who is able to receive a transplant and how long that kidney can remain healthy.

There have been many advances in medications since Dr. Jordan began his research. However, medications still have side effects that can cause patients to skip doses. Dr. Jordan states, “Chronic rejection… is the number one challenge we have. It’s what causes most kidneys to fail over time.” However, there are things transplant recipients can do to prevent this from happening. There are new treatments and medications on the horizon that may help minimize the difficulty of a daily medication regimen. Dr. Jordan also talks about current therapies which decrease antibodies and allow someone with high antibodies to still be eligible for a transplant.

Lori is excited about these new advances. “Kidney transplantation is the treatment of choice for many people with end-stage kidney disease. It’s great to know there is innovative treatment and monitoring methods to help us keep our gift of life for a long time.”

WesternU to open Doctor of Physical Therapy program in Oregon

Western University of Health Sciences will welcome its first class of Doctor of Physical Therapy students to its WesternU Oregon campus in Lebanon, Oregon in 2022.

WesternU’s College of Health Sciences (CHS) is assembling the Department of Physical Therapy Education (DPTE) team that will make this a reality, led by CHS Interim Dean Dee Schilling, PT, PhD, FNAP, and DPTE Oregon Chair and Associate Professor Chad Lairamore, PT, PhD, FNAP.

“It is a pleasure to welcome Dr. Chad Lairamore as Chair of our new Oregon Physical Therapy program,” said WesternU President Daniel R. Wilson, MD, PhD. “Not only does Dr. Lairamore have precisely the right professional background to lead this important new endeavor, he also has a natural affinity to the WesternU ethos of humanistic science.”

Faculty must be in place 18 months before the program starts, per accreditation requirements. CHS plans to have 12 faculty in Lebanon in addition to Lairamore, along with 60 students in the first class. The faculty will create a curriculum separate from the DPT program in Pomona, California.

“Per accreditation, we must have independent programs with independent chairs, and we must answer the question, ‘What is your niche? Why should we have another PT program?’” Schilling said. “The niche is really rural health and looking at what that means and how do we best serve this population.”

“We are looking at rural health and potentially telemedicine to better serve that population, especially when they are hard to reach,” Lairamore said. “The other thing we are looking into is creating a blended learning curriculum that incorporates online and web-based education with in-class active learning. My vision is to have less lecture and more hands-on doing during in-class activities.”

CHS is also planning to introduce an occupational therapy (OT) program in 2023.

“OT and PT traditionally are very much together on teams, especially in the rehabilitation world,” Lairamore said. “I see a lot of potential for collaboration there.”

Two members of CHS’s Pomona team will move to WesternU Oregon. Assistant Professor Lindsey Liggan, PT, DPT ’13, WCS, PRPC, is a Women’s Health Certified Specialist (WCS).

“I thought it was an amazing opportunity to build and grow something new,” Liggan said. “And women’s health and public health is an area of need in that area. It will be a different change of pace and an opportunity to do different things than what I’m doing here. Plus, Oregon is beautiful. Who doesn’t want to live there?”

DPTE Manager Carrie Rogers, MS, will become director of operations and assistant dean of student affairs for the program in Lebanon.

“I’m very passionate about students, and that’s why serving as assistant dean of student affairs is important to me,” Rogers said. “I think the importance of students always should be our top priority, so I’m an advocate for them whenever I can be and whenever I need to be.”

Rogers has wanted to move to Oregon as soon as she heard the opportunity was available.

“It’s going to be fun. We get to develop the curriculum. We get to help students grow and develop something from scratch,” Rogers said. “We have a culture in this college and Lindsey and I going to the Oregon campus brings that culture with us. This is who we are and this is who we want to be.”

“And then you have Dr. Lairamore coming in with a new perspective,” Schilling said. “It really is this beautiful blending of minds and worlds and creativity. It’s very fun to have people who are visionary and who are passionate. I have no concerns about where this is going to go and how it’s going to end because I am just so confident in this team.

I’m excited about their future, the opportunity for future students and the future of WesternU and this program as it is definitely going to be groundbreaking.”

Pain Relief Options for Rheumatoid Arthritis-Associated Chronic Back Pain

Dr. Kaliq Chang

Because the neck, or cervical spine, includes several synovial joints, RA-associated chronic pain more often results in this part of the spine.

Chronic back pain may not spring to mind as one of the more common problems linked to the autoimmune disease rheumatoid arthritis, or RA. But this is indeed the case, and relief for RA-associated back pain is both necessary and available, according to Interventional Pain Management Specialist Kaliq Chang, MD, of Atlantic Spine Center.

Affecting more than 1.3 million Americans and as much as 1% of the population worldwide, RA is among the most prevalent autoimmune disorders, according to the Rheumatoid Arthritis Support Network. RA patients experience symptoms when the body’s antibodies mistakenly attack normal synovial joint fluid, triggering chronic inflammation.

Because the neck, or cervical spine, includes several synovial joints, RA-associated chronic pain more often results in this part of the spine. And while RA can cause swelling and pain in joints throughout the body, the resulting inflammation can destroy facet joints – which support movement and flexibility – down the length of the spine. This can lead to severe pain in the neck and back.

Symptoms of RA-associated back pain

The longer a patient has coped with RA, the more likely they’ll experience symptoms in their spine. Estimates vary, but some suggest that more than 80% of those with RA have dealt with spinal problems.

What symptoms might they experience? According to Dr. Chang, these include:

  • Joint swelling
  • Headaches
  • Pain, particularly at the base of the skull
  • Less flexibility in the joints of the spine
  • Stiffness in the neck and/or back
  • Sensation of warmth around affected joints

“In advanced cases of RA, this destruction can even lead to the spinal cord and nerve roots becoming compressed, resulting in moderate or severe back pain,” explains Dr. Chang.

Sciatica can also result if spinal vertebrae slip out of place, placing pressure on the nerve roots in the spine. If that happens, patients may have pain that radiates to the arms and/or legs, experience difficulty walking, lose coordination, or lose bowel or bladder function, Dr. Chang says.

“These extreme symptoms and their consequences underscore the need for anyone with RA to seek treatment for neck or back pain to prevent further damage,” he says.

Pain relief tactics

On top of being necessary to avoid further complications, treating RA-associated chronic back pain is a good idea simply because it’s difficult to live with lasting discomfort, Dr. Chang says. Fortunately, however, a variety of home measures and in-office treatments are available. These include:

  • Hot and cold packs: Pain and stiffness take a hike – at least temporarily – when hot and cold packs are applied. Either is easy to do at home, with heat packs helping improve blood flow and lessen muscle spasms, Dr. Chang says. Cold packs, which can be applied for 20 minutes at a time 3 to 4 times per day, can help reduce inflammation from RA and are best for flare-ups.
  • Medications: Pain severity dictates the best type of pain medications for RA-associated chronic back pain. Painkillers such as aspirin or NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen or naproxen can do the trick for many patients, while prescription-strength pain relievers can be offered at your doctor’s discretion.
  • DMARDs: So-called disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, or DMARDs, are prescribed to ease pain and can slow the progression of RA, averting pain flare-ups. These drugs work by blocking chemicals released by the body when antibodies attack joints. While they come with various side effects, your doctor can help you manage these since the drugs may lessen damage to bones and cartilage.
  • Spinal injections: Injecting an anesthetic or corticosteroid into the region surrounding RA-associated back pain can lead to significant relief for many patients, Dr. Chang says. And the pain relief can last for weeks or months.
  • Back surgery: Surgery is almost always the last resort to treat chronic back pain, when more conservative measures don’t work. But various surgical procedures can help RA-associated back pain, including spinal fusion, which removes a diseased joint and bonds the surrounding vertebrae. Also possible is surgery to stabilize and realign the spine, reducing pressure on surrounding nerves, Dr. Chang says.
