Cayucos Mold Damage Company Announces the Answer to ‘Why Is There Mold When Nothing Is Wet?’

mold damage Cayucos

Mold is never completely eliminated because mold spores are everywhere, just waiting for the perfect conditions to grow.

Mold doesn’t need things to be wet in order to grow; it needs a combination of circumstances that include moisture that isn’t necessarily detectable to the eye or by touch. ServPro in Cayucos, the mold damage specialist, answers the question “Why is there mold when nothing is wet” by explaining the conditions that mold needs to grow and how to prevent those conditions.

Mold is never completely eliminated because mold spores are everywhere, just waiting for the perfect conditions to grow. Mold spores need a combination of organic matter for food, moisture, warmth, and oxygen. The organic matter and moisture is the reason mold is often discovered in piles of leaves in the shade of trees in the middle of summer. The leaves provide the organic matter and the shade helps retain the level of moisture the spores need. Mold grows best in warm temperatures between 77 and 86 degrees, and this is why warm weather does not necessarily announce the end of “mold season.”

The old saying: “An ounce prevention is worth a pound of cure,” certainly applies to mold. Removing as much of the conditions that feed mold as possible is the best approach to preventing mold damage.

Step one is to keep all surfaces clean and dry and provide plenty of ventilation.

Start outside by removing wet damp landscaping away from the foundation of the building. Where possible, replace water-hungry shrubs and flowers drought-tolerant plants.

  • Clean up fallen leaves that can harbor mold spores. For those who like to leave fallen leaves on the ground because of the benefits to the soil, just remove those next to the foundation. Fallen leaves can be recycled as garden mulch.
  • Check the roof and exterior siding for loose shingles, boards, and cracks and make the necessary repairs.
  • Check attics, basements, crawl spaces for signs of leaks and moisture and make the necessary repairs.
  • Check under bathroom, kitchen and laundry room cabinets and check for signs of leaks and moisture around the walls and flooring near appliances and fixtures.
  • Include any stonework or masonry in the inspection.
  • Check for leaking pipes and other plumbing fixtures.
  • Clean up any mold and check for any mold or water damage. The damage can be in the form of rotted wood or crumbling drywall, stains, and serious rot damage to the structure of the building.

Call the ServPro Cayucos mold damage experts for a thorough inspection of your home or business. The ServPro team knows that mold damage can disrupt your life. Excell Home Care, Inc. Works to Improve the Field of In-Home Health Care in California

That’s why Excell Home Care requires our home care providers to go through an additional home health training. We also offer a mentoring program, which pairs the top at-home nurses with new employees.

After spending 20 years in the healthcare industry, Dr. Jennifer Ty of Excell Home Care Inc. is familiar with the problems that plague in-home service providers — and what can be done to address them. “Not all in-home health care companies are created equally,” said Dr. Ty, CEO and founder of Excell Home Care, Inc.

Dr. Ty is working to address two major issues she sees with home health providers:

No. 1: Insufficient training. California law requires a certified home health aide to complete a 120-hour training program to begin receiving certification. Title 22, Chapter 6, Article 3, Section 74707 of the California Code of Regulations Effective January 1, 1998, requires “registered nurses and licensed vocational nurses providing services in a patient’s temporary or permanent place of residence through a home health agency shall have one-year prior professional nursing experience.” Even with this regulation and program, registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses and aides can still lack the skills and experience required to give outstanding care.

“That’s why Excell Home Care requires our home care providers to go through an additional home health training,” noted Dr. Ty. “We also offer a mentoring program, which pairs the top at-home nurses with new employees.”

No. 2: Low morale. According to Home Care Pulse’s 2018 Home Care Benchmarking Study, turnover rates for caregivers are at an all-time high of 82 percent. “While job dissatisfaction can stem from a variety of sources, the main reason is low employee morale,” added Dr. Ty.

To improve morale, Dr. Ty has taken several measures to let her employees know that they are valued. Employees can nominate each other for the “You Made my Day” award, in which one person is picked daily. She also created a support group on Facebook called “Home Health Warriors.” Dr. Ty is committed to creating an engaging workplace culture on the very first day of a new employee. Its mission is to provide support to home health providers and home health nurses by giving the latest information available, provide resources that will serve as a tool in providing the highest standard of care, and offer support to licensed nurses (RN’s and LVN’s) and ancillary professionals (PT, OT, ST, CHHA and MSW) who will transition to home health.

Since forming in 2002, Excell Home Care has provided hundreds of clients with top-notch care in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Dr. Ty recently spoke at the Home Care conference on the Patient-Driven Groupings Model (PDGM), which represents the most significant change to the Medicare Home Health program in the 21st Century.

Flip the Script Campaign Launches to Start the Conversation About Pain Among Older Adults

Flip the Script on Pain logo

Flip the Script is an education initiative aimed at reducing opioid prescription misuse in older adults by building a greater understanding of pain, options for managing pain and safely using opioid pain medicine.

The Florida State University College of Medicine, Department of Geriatrics (FSU Department of Geriatrics) and the University of South Florida School of Aging Studies & Florida Policy Exchange Center on Aging (USF School of Aging Studies) announce the launch of a public information campaign to ‘flip the script’ on how Florida’s older adults think about and talk about pain.

Flip the Script is a multi-channel education initiative aimed at reducing opioid prescription misuse in older adults by building a greater understanding of pain, options for managing pain and safely using opioid pain medicine, when it is determined that opioids are the best treatment option for an individual patient.

“Chronic pain conditions are more prevalent for individuals 65 years old and older, with more than half of older adults indicating they’ve experienced some type of pain within the past 30 days,” said Dr. Lisa J. Granville, Professor of Geriatrics and Associate Chair of the Department of Geriatrics, Florida State University College of Medicine. “Pain isn’t just a part of growing older and shouldn’t hinder someone from doing the activities they enjoy the most. The heart of Flip the Script is helping people continue to do the things they love by understanding the individuality of their pain and the options for managing pain based on what matters most to them.”

Flip the Script was developed to help people:

  • Learn More about the types of pain and the impact of pain
  • Be Prepared to describe and track the pain they feel
  • Take Action to find relief and better manage pain by initiating conversations with a health care provider about their pain and ultimately share in the decision-making about how to treat pain

The campaign provides older adults and their care partners with resources, checklists and questions to help start conversations with a doctor, nurse, pharmacist or other health care professional about pain.

“Everyone reacts to pain differently,” said Kathryn Hyer, Ph.D. MPP, Professor and Director, Florida Policy Exchange Center on Aging at the University of South Florida. “Flip the Script is one of the first education campaigns that encourages people to take a whole-body approach to reduce the physical and emotional symptoms of pain. By understanding pain, the emotions that are associated with feeling pain and the variety of options available to treat pain, patients can feel empowered to start conversations with a health care provider and work toward an individualized approach to pain management.”

The opioid epidemic in the United States is a far-reaching and life-threatening problem that affects persons of all ages. For older adults, there are several factors that can contribute to opioid-related problems including conditions that may cause chronic pain, taking multiple medications, lack of understanding about medication interaction and serious side effects, including overdose, and the shame of substance misuse or addiction.

To educate Floridians about these topics, Flip the Script also includes information about pain medicine misuse among older adults, safe storage and disposal.

The FSU Department of Geriatrics and USF School of Aging Studies recognize that creating a broader awareness among older adults of the complexities of pain cannot be accomplished in a silo. The teams are grateful for the collaboration of state agencies, health care providers, community organizations and older adults themselves to ensure Flip the Script is an educational and useful resource for Florida’s older adults, their families, friends and health care providers.

About Flip the Script

Flip the Script provides resources to help people learn more about the types of pain and the impact of pain; be prepared to describe and track the pain they feel; and take action to find relief and better manage pain by initiating conversations with a health care provider about their pain and ultimately share in the decision-making about how to treat pain.

This project is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Both universities were eligible to receive a competitive, supplemental award to enhance current Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program activities. The supplemental award required funded organizations to focus on opioid abuse education and training that addresses prevention, assessment, management and treatment in older adults.

LivBar Launches Nationally Through all 23 UNFI Distribution Centers in 2020

LivBar will be available through UNFI starting in 2020

Our partnership with UNFI will allow us to make real food, nutritionally balanced bars easily accessible all over the nation.

Liv Foods, Inc. has signed a distribution agreement with the largest natural foods distributor in the United States, UNFI. Starting January 2020, all five LivBar flavors will be available at all 23 of UNFI’s United States distribution centers.

LivBars are a USDA Certified Organic hand-baked energy bar that has gained rapid traction in the market in the last year, quickly achieving national distribution, securing several large multi-chain accounts, and winning an impressive string of awards since Wade Brooks came on as CEO in early 2019.

“In less than a year, we’ve gone from having no distribution partners to working with seven, including KeHE and now UNFI, the two largest natural foods distributors in the nation,” says Brooks. “The bar market is a crowded space, but we believe that bars can – and should – be better. The demand we’re experiencing proves that consumers agree.”

LivBars are made from certified organic plant-based, low-allergen ingredients, have complex superfood flavor profiles, and are baked for a texture that is both crunchy and chewy. All five flavors are vegetarian and two are vegan. The bars are gluten free, GMO free, peanut free, corn free, dairy free, and soy free. They even come in a home-compostable wrapper, which the LivBar team hopes will set a new standard for the bar industry at large.

“Our partnership with UNFI will allow us to make real food, nutritionally balanced bars easily accessible all over the nation,” LivBar founder Jan Johansen continued. “There are so many candy bars out there disguised as nutrition bars, so many bars in single-use plastic wrappers that end up littering our forests and oceans. We’re excited to give more consumers the opportunity to choose a real food bar that is good for them and good for the planet.”

UNFI distributes to some of the largest national retailers in the United States, including Whole Foods, Kroger, Publix, Sprouts Farmer’s Market, Gelsons, Natural Grocers, and Wegmans. LivBar’s partnership with UNFI will facilitate the brand’s growth and allow for much easier pickup of accounts already working with UNFI.

LivBars are currently available in 30 states, online at Amazon Prime, Amazon Subscribe and Save, direct from the LivBar website (http://www.livbar.com), and in hundreds of stores including Fresh Thyme, Erewhon, New Seasons Markets, Market of Choice, Zupan’s, Garden Bar by Evergreen, Roth’s Fresh Markets, Balducci’s, Kings Food Markets, and Whole Foods (in February 2020).

LivBar is distributed nationally through KeHE, McLane, DPI Specialty Foods, and now UNFI.

Loma Linda University Health cardiologists use nation’s first alternative access point for heart device to save a veteran

Patient and doctor pose together after surgery.

In this day and age, nearly any challenge can be overcome. Patients who are not eligible for bypass or stents will now have more options.

In a first of its kind in the United States, cardiologists at Loma Linda University International Heart Institute have performed a pioneering coronary intervention with an Impella heart assist device and stent placement through single access from the axillary artery in the shoulder. The new procedure offers surgeons another option to help save the lives of people suffering from severely calcified coronary heart disease, which kills more than 370,000 Americans every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Seventy-year-old Vietnam veteran David Quiett presented at Loma Linda University Medical Center with a heart attack. Physicians quickly learned that he had severely calcified coronary artery disease in his major arteries. He was in need of stents and a heart-saving pumping device. But surgeons were unable to insert both interventions in separate vascular entry points because of the patient’s calcification. The pumping device is usually inserted through the femoral artery near the groin, and stents are placed through a separate artery.

Due to the patient’s condition, there were no viable traditional arterial access points. With no options left, Loma Linda University Heart Institute interventional cardiologist Aditya Bharadwaj, MD, used the axillary artery — a major artery in the shoulder — to install the stents and the pumping device. But this involved risks because working with arteries near the neck creates a greater risk of stroke.

Bharadwaj said the success of the procedure opens the door for patients around the country to have more viable cardiovascular intervention surgeries.

“Physicians have conducted single-access procedures through the femoral artery near the groin but never through the axillary artery,” Bharadwaj said. “In this day and age, nearly any challenge can be overcome. Patients who are not eligible for bypass or stents will now have more options.”

Quiett and his wife Ann are grateful for the expertise and care they received at Loma Linda University International Heart Institute.

“I am grateful the ambulance took my husband to Loma Linda University Medical Center because they are the poster child of what a hospital should be, from care to expertise,” Ann said. “They saved my husband’s life.”

Quiett was up walking several hours following the procedure, talking, eating and even gave his surgeon a thumbs up. He was safely discharged two days later.

For more information about the International Heart Institute and all they have to offer, visit their website.

ArcheMedX, the company improving clinical trial readiness, today announced the expansion of its senior leadership team. Kelly will apply her 20 years of clinical operations experience to accelerate growth of the company’s clinical research business.

“As the complexity and cost of clinical research increases, a key to reducing the risk of under-performing trials is ensuring the preparedness of staff and sites” said Ms. Ritch. She added, “I’m excited to join the ArcheMedX team and help clinical operations leaders make faster, more informed decisions that improve trial efficiency and outcomes.”

These delays can have significant financial costs for each day that a trial impedes a product’s development and launch.

At ArcheMedX, we arm trial stakeholders with more than an advanced training solution — we provide the early warning detection they need to mitigate operational risk and reduce costly delays,” said ArcheMedX CEO and co-founder Joel Selzer. “This is a pivotal time for the clinical research sector, and we are thrilled to have an industry leader with Kelly’s breadth of experience join the team. With Kelly’s appointment we are better equipped to expand the product and commercial strategies at ArcheMedX that will transform clinical operations.”

The Idea Guy® Partners with IdeaScale, Adding Creativity Training to Innovation Management

Our partnership with The Idea Guy will help expand our current offerings, and help our client organizations build the systemic creativity that is proven to make an impact in their performance, increasing an already significant return on investment.

The Idea Guy®, an expert in creating new ideas that solve problems, has partnered with IdeaScale, the world’s largest cloud-based innovation software platform, to collaborate on best-in-class training programs with worldwide reach.

“Every business leader has a problem, and every one of them can be solved with a good idea,” explains Kevin Popović, Founder of The Idea Guy®. “All types of organizations are looking for ways to reduce costs, create new products or generate new lines of revenue, and the people within their organization are the most likely to solve these problems. They need someone to help get those people organized, engaged and into action – that’s my expertise. With IdeaScale, I can now engage more people from across the globe, measure their performance towards a goal, and report on the return on investment that CXOs expect.”

“IdeaScale’s mission is to empower organizations to engage their most valuable resource – passionate people – in making impactful decisions,” says Jessica Day, Co-Founder of IdeaScale. “Our data shows that the average person has about $1,200 in untapped ideas in their head, but ideas that stay there don’t add value to anyone. Organizations need a path for those innovators to contribute, and for their ideas to grow: IdeaScale facilitates that connection. We see our partnership with the Idea Guy as a way to empower those average people to be more creative, more engaged and more productive.”

For most organizations, ideation and ongoing innovation is the new normal. Companies are using proven creative processes as management tools to become “design lead,” making improvements to products, services and experiences. Brands that apply these processes, like Apple, Nike, Procter & Gamble, Walt Disney and Starbucks, report performance increases of more than 200% over their competitors, according to a Design Value Index study of S&P companies over a ten-year period.

But not every company or public sector department has the skills, tools and processes necessary to share that mission across an entire organization. Companies require interaction between people, collaboration across traditional silos, and the ability to act on ideas with greater speed and efficacy in order to make substantive change. IdeaScale and The Idea Guy aim to close that gap so that organizations can train their employees in creative thinking, empower teams for success, and champion good ideas when they arise.

According to Harvard Business Review, “higher ideation rates are correlated with growth and net income, because companies with an innovation culture not only generate better ideas, but are organized and managed to act on them.”

Sean Miller, VP of Innovation Advisory at IdeaScale is responsible for helping organizations develop innovation strategies that deliver positive outcomes. “We are very excited about exploring how we can include creativity resources, best practices and training throughout our platform. Our goal has always been to help our clients create more ideas, and improving the creativity for our end users is a priority. Our partnership with The Idea Guy will help expand our current offerings, and help our client organizations build the systemic creativity that is proven to make an impact in their performance, increasing an already significant return on investment.”

About The Idea Guy®

Kevin Popović is The Idea Guy® helping people create new ideas that solve problems through speaking, workshops, training and consulting. As a fractional Chief Strategy Officer, he works with hundreds of CEOs each year which positions him in the center of current CXO thinking.
