Shady Grove Fertility Reports Increases in Black Women Starting IVF Treatment One Year after Michelle Obama Opens Up about Her Infertility Struggle in Memoir, Becoming

News Image

Michelle Obama’s openness along with other prominent celebrities such as Gabrielle Union, sparked a national conversation about equity in women’s healthcare for black women along with a need to break the taboos in the black community about infertility, something we should all be grateful for.

Just 1 year ago, former First Lady, Michelle Obama, opened up about her own infertility struggles in her personal memoir that, after 15 days, became the best-selling book of 2018 in the United States.

In the book, described by Obama as her “deeply personal experience,” Obama shared of feeling “lost and alone” after suffering a miscarriage 20 years ago and eventually undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment to have her daughters, Malia and Sasha. At the time, Obama was in her mid-30s and expressed how “the biological clock is real” and “egg production is limited.”

Obama continued, “I think it’s the worst thing that we do to each other as women … not share the truth about our bodies and how they work and how they don’t work,” a statement that has since struck a very real cord with many women.

“I’m so thankful to our former First Lady for elevating the conversation of miscarriage, loss, and infertility to the level of importance it deserves. It’s encouraging to see the increasing rate of black women now seeking infertility care,” says Desireé McCarthy-Keith, M.D., M.P.H., a board certified reproductive endocrinologist who sees patients in SGF Atlanta’s Atlanta-Northside and Alpharetta locations.

“Too often black women don’t seek care at the same rate as white women, but infertility can impact anyone, regardless of their race,” added McCarthy-Keith. “And while we are still a long way away from equality when it comes to the number of black women who seek care compared to white women, Michelle Obama shedding an important light, and igniting more women to take action, is definitely a step in the right direction.”

SGF, a national fertility center dedicated to advocating on behalf of making high quality and affordable fertility more accessible for all, is now reporting a larger share of women self-reporting as black, African, or African-American, that are going through IVF treatment—a previously underserved population when it comes to electing fertility treatment.

“I cannot encourage my sisters of color enough to reach out, make the call, heed the warning signs, and get help. You do not have to suffer in silence. Infertility is a real medical condition, and there are outstanding treatments available that can help almost any woman conceive, provided she seeks appropriate help early,” added McCarthy-Keith.

When comparing treatment data from SGF’s mid-Atlantic fertility centers from January 1 to June 30, 2018, to the same time period in 2019, the share of black women starting treatment grew 50 percent faster compared to treatment rates as a whole.

In a survey of over 1,000 women published by Women’s Health Magazine and Oprah Magazine in 2018, black women were less likely to talk with their friends, family, or doctors, compared to their white counterparts. The lack of conversation doesn’t impact the support of black women on their path to parenthood, but the likelihood that they will seek the needed medical care to grow their families.

Dressing Your Child for Optimal Car Seat Safety This Winter

With winter just around the corner, parents want to make sure their children are nice and cozy – especially on long car rides. While padded jackets and overalls might keep little ones warm, during a car ride they can become dangerous, no matter how quick the journey.

The harness system on a car seat must fit snugly in order to ensure maximum safety during a crash or sudden stop. While children may want to be wrapped up in their favorite jacket for warmth, when they’re strapped into a car seat, a padded winter coat can compress leaving a gap between the harness and the child’s body. This can make the harness loose and put the child in unnecessary danger.

How can parents ensure their children are both comfortable and safe in their car seat this winter? There are four simple things parents can do:

Layers, layers, layers

Instead of a thick, puffy coat, dress the child in several thin layers. Start with a comfortable T-shirt and then work outwards. A thin fleece pullover and a light woolen jacket on top will do the trick. Dressing a child in several thin layers will keep them warm, without the risk of the material compressing. Heat is quite nicely retained between the individual layers, and there’s the extra advantage that dressing like this is more comfortable for the child.

Bring a blanket

There’s no reason to leave a child’s favorite blanket back home when you can just as easily bring it on your trip. Once the child is safely harnessed and buckled into their car seat, tuck the blanket around them in the seat. He or she will be safe, warm and snuggly for the journey!

Other options

Parents who are traveling with small children are already carrying around a lot of stuff. Instead of dragging around an extra blanket, parents can use the things they already have. While children shouldn’t wear their bulky winter coats in their car seat, there is nothing wrong with using it to cover up after the child has been safely buckled up. If the child is frequently moved from their stroller into the car and back again, try a footmuff that can easily be removed from the stroller and tuck it around the child in the car. Bonus: It will already be warm.

Check the ambient temperature in the car

Parents typically only worry about the temperature of the car during the hot summer months. However, the winter months pose a risk of hypothermia for children when the car gets too cold. CYBEX incorporates SensorSafe™ technology into car seats that alerts to possible critical situations, including hypothermia. The activated SensorSafe™ chest clip continuously measures the temperature inside the car and alerts the driver if the ambient temperature of the child is too hot or too cold. This helps to prevent an overheating or undercooling of the child.

The CYBEX family wishes parents everywhere a safe journey this winter season! Additional information on CYBEX and SensorSafe Technology can be found at cybex-online.com.

About CYBEX

CYBEX offers car seats, baby carriers, kids’ furniture and strollers that are not only safe but perfectly adapt to urban lifestyles. Nash Family Dentistry Provides Stable Dentures to Jackson, MS with Implant Supported Dentures

Drs. Kenneth and Jonathan Nash, Dentists Serving Jackson, MS

Drs. Kenneth and Jonathan Nash Restore Chewing Power with Implant Supported Dentures in Jackson, MS

Functionally, a dental implant can be restored to act as a natural tooth. You can eat what you want to eat with it and you treat it as a natural tooth, flossing and brushing it every day.

Denture-wearing patients in Jackson, MS can stabilize their prosthesis at Nash Family Dentistry through implant supported dentures. Dental implants give denture-wearers a more stable, comfortable and oftentimes permanent new smile as a solution to missing teeth. Implant supported dentures offer numerous benefits to patients over traditional dentures, bridges or flippers.

“The implant is simply a titanium screw that fits into the space that is left from missing teeth,” says Dr. Jonathan Nash. “Functionally, a dental implant can be restored to act as a natural tooth. You can eat what you want to eat with it and you treat it as a natural tooth, flossing and brushing it every day.”

Implant supported dentures are designed to look, feel and function as close to natural teeth as possible. With just two to four dental implants placed into the jawbone, a lifelike prosthesis can be attached and held firmly in place by the implants. Depending on your needs or what the dentists recommend, this new implant supported denture can be permanently attached or allowed to be removed at night or for cleaning. With either option, implant supported dentures provide patients with many benefits, including:

  • No slipping, shifting or falling out
  • Restoration of 55 to 90 percent bite strength
  • Retained facial appearance
  • Improved comfort
  • Lasting many years

Dental implants work by placing a biocompatible titanium post to the jawbone where teeth are missing. With implant supported dentures, only two to four implants are needed, and they are placed in areas of the jaw with the most bone, often making bone grafting treatments unnecessary. Once fully healed, these implants can support a denture by “snapping” into it, making it stable in the mouth. Traditional dentures only provide patients with around ten percent bite strength, but when attached to dental implants, patients are restored with up to 90 percent of their natural biting and chewing power.

For many patients, implant supported dentures are a life changing solution to missing teeth. Being able to bite, chew, talk and act comfortably in front of others drastically improves self-esteem and lifestyle. Nash Family Dentistry also can replace individual missing teeth with implants and treat peri-implantitis, an infection of the gum tissue around implants, so patients are able to protect their dental implant investment. To make implant supported denture surgery more gentle and easier for patients, the dentists offer soothing sedation dentistry, including oral sedation and nitrous oxide.
