Dr. Robert Carimi Replaces Missing Teeth in Charleston, SC with TeethXpress® Dental Implants

Patients who are frustrated with their dentures, who want to taste their food better or who want to improve their oral function would definitely benefit from TeethXpress.

Dentist, Dr. Robert Carimi, offers full mouth dental implants in Charleston, SC utilizing the TeethXpress solution, a revolutionary approach to replacing missing teeth. TeethXpress allows patients to receive a tooth extraction, dental implant placement, and a temporary tooth replacement all in one day. Patients who receive the TeethXpress treatment experience enhanced confidence and an improved ability to chew, speak, and smile.

“TeethXpress is the ability for us to replace a patient’s missing teeth, or dentition, in just one day,” says Dr. Carimi. “Patients who are frustrated with their dentures, who want to taste their food better or who want to improve their oral function would definitely benefit from TeethXpress. Being able to come in with broken or mobile teeth and leave that day with new, secure teeth in your mouth is really exciting for patients.”

TeethXpress is a life-changing solution for many patients as it allows them to go from multiple missing teeth, or no teeth at all, to a functional and lifelike arch of teeth in just one day. Before treatment begins, patients receive a 3D CT scan of their jaw. This shows Dr. Carimi the amount of bone present, position of existing tooth roots and location of nerves so that he can create the most accurate treatment plan possible.

On the day of surgery, existing teeth can be extracted. Then, dental implants are strategically placed into areas of the jaw with the most bone and a prosthesis is attached. This allows patients to leave the office with a natural looking and functional set of teeth the same day. After patients heal over several months, they will return to the practice to receive their permanent set of new teeth, which should last over 20 years with regular hygiene and dental check-ups.

Sedation Dentistry of Charleston is a modern dental practice offering general, cosmetic, and surgical care. New Study Led by Leading Spine Surgeons Lanman, Cuellar and Rasouli Shows Cervical Artificial Disc Replacement Safe in Outpatient Setting

Three of the nation’s preeminent spine surgeons, Drs. Todd Lanman, Jason Cuellar and Alexandre Rasouli, of Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, served as the principal investigators in a new study published November 7 in the international peer-reviewed Spine journal.

The paper entitled ‘The Safety of Single and Multi-Level Cervical Total Disc Replacement in Ambulatory Surgery Centers’ evaluated the safety profile of single and multi-level cervical artificial disc replacement, known as ADR, performed in an outpatient setting.

All three leading medical professionals, Lanman, a spinal neurosurgeon, and Cuellar and Rasouli, orthopedic spine surgeons, investigated the increasing proportion of spine surgery performed in ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) vis-à-vis an analysis of consecutive cervical ADR surgeries over a 9-month period, including multi-level and revision.

The pre-, intra- and post-op data recorded during the study took into account age, gender, body mass index, tobacco use, the presence of diabetes, level and procedure, OR time, EBL, complications, discharge site, occurrence of re-operation, hospital admission or any medical complication or infection taking place over a 90-day period.

There were 147 patients who underwent 231 treated levels of ADR, including 71 single-level and 76 multi-level, or ADR in more than one disc level, comprised of 69 at two levels of the cervical spine, 6 at three levels and one at four levels.

The average age of those who participated in the study was 50, 71 of those patients were female, while 76 were males. None were insulin-dependent diabetics, four currently used tobacco, while 16 previously had used it. The average time of anesthesia was 88 minutes, and 90.3% of patients were discharged directly home, while nearly 10% went to an after-care facility.

The study authored by Lanman, Cuellar and Rasouli concluded that ADR surgeries are safe to perform in an Ambulatory Surgery Center, or outpatient setting, contingent upon an efficient surgical team and careful patient selection criteria.

The new study can be found here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31703051

Named a ‘Leader in Health Care’ by the Los Angeles Business Journal, and dubbed one of the top doctors in his field in the L.A. Times, The Hollywood Reporter and Hemispheres Magazine, Dr. Lanman is well respected as one of the leading innovators in artificial or total disc replacement. He serves as the principal investigator on the majority of clinical trials leading to their FDA approvals, and was the first to pioneer Restorative Motion Surgery, returning patients to near or full mobility and motion, by replacing fusions with artificial disc devices.

A majority of his patients include A-level celebrities from the film, TV and theatrical worlds, as well as many sports players and business magnates.

He remains a clinical professor at UCLA for two decades, has published myriad peer-reviewed articles and chapters of books relating to spine medicine, and serves as a frequent medical educator and expert contributor in the media.

News Image

This is a powerhouse team of healthcare professionals and we are proud they chose to join our firm. These lawyers have some of the most impressive credentials and trial experience, and I know they will thrive at our firm.

Less than one year after launching Mayer LLP, the firm has grown to nearly 40 attorneys. The most recent additions are four well-known healthcare attorneys with extensive trial and appellate experience in medical malpractice and professional liability, as well as two paralegals and a finance administration professional.

“This is a powerhouse team of healthcare professionals and we are proud they chose to join our firm. These lawyers have some of the most impressive credentials and trial experience, and I know they will thrive at our firm,” said Zach Mayer, founding partner of Mayer LLP. “We’ve experienced terrific growth and success since launching in January which proves our philosophy and approach to serving our clients is exactly what the market needed.”

The lawyers joining the firm include William D. “Dick” Wiles, a medical malpractice attorney who has tried more than 100 cases, and M. Kenneth (Ken) Patterson, a trial lawyer for nearly 40 years with a remarkable track record of success, having achieved a favorable verdict for his clients in over 96 percent of cases tried. Both Wiles and Patterson are members of the prestigious American Board of Trial Advocates, an invitation-only organization of experienced trial lawyers and judges.

“This firm is exactly the right place for us to bring our healthcare and appellate practices. Mayer LLP is a growing firm with a unique model that we know will serve our clients’ interests very well,” said Dick Wiles. “They have achieved something remarkable in a short time, and we’re delighted to join this high energy team.”

Also joining the healthcare practice is Heather A. Kanny, a litigator who has successfully defended physicians and hospitals across Texas in cases with multi-million-dollar damage exposure. Kevin J. Keith has handled over 100 appeals in state and federal courts throughout Texas, as well as practiced in the U.S. Supreme Court and Texas Supreme Court.

All four of the new attorneys joining Mayer LLP are leaving Hiersche Hayward Drakeley Urbach, an Addison-based law firm that will cease operations at the end of 2019. In addition to the lawyers, two paralegals and one finance administrator are also leaving HHDU to join Mayer LLP.

Collect Rx Announces the Launch of CRXISelect™, the all-in-one solution for identifying out-of-network claims candidates for appeal of underpayments and denials

CRXISelect Industry-leading Reimbursement Data

“We’re proud of our continuing efforts to support providers as they care for patients. Our flexible models of extending access to our industry-leading data and analytics represents another step forward in our mission to support improved care quality through fair and equitable reimbursements”

Collect Rx, the leader in out-of-network reimbursement solutions for healthcare providers, including ambulatory surgery centers, hospitals, behavioral health providers, physician practices and medical and diagnostic labs, announces the launch of the groundbreaking CRXISelect, the largest and most accurate source of reimbursement data on out-of-network claims. Based on Collect Rx’s proprietary data and analytics tool CRXIS Business Intelligence Engine, developed to assist providers in obtaining fair out-of-network reimbursements from payors by aggregating data from multiple sources and providing visibility and insight into payor behavior, CRXISelect promises to give providers new tools as they work to ensure payors are reimbursing fairly and correctly.

“CRXISelect represents an entirely new way for providers to level the playing field with payors. More and more, we see insurance carriers refusing to pay their fair share to providers, and reducing patient access to the care they need and have paid their premiums for, and their doctors have requested,” according to Collect Rx’s CEO John Bartos. “We firmly believe in a patient’s right to choose their healthcare provider and a healthcare provider’s right to be fairly compensated. CRXISelect will extend the capabilities of the CRXIS Business Intelligence Engine to more doctors and facilities and help keep reimbursement at the true ‘usual and customary’ rate rather than an arbitrary payor dictated reimbursement.”

Served as a subscription, CRXISelect gives providers the actual usual and customary rate that payors have paid for similar procedures in similar geographies. Without this independent confirmation, providers are forced to accept payors offers without any verification. Collect Rx’s independent validation results in an average increase of 59% of allowed amount for pre-payment negotiated rates, and average increase of 87% of the initial payment for qualified post-payment appeals based on the industry – standard ‘usual and customary rates.’

“We’re proud of our continuing efforts to support providers as they care for patients. Our flexible models of extending access to our industry-leading data and analytics represents another step forward in our mission to support improved care quality through fair and equitable reimbursements,” said Collect Rx’s President Ike Brenner.

Vancouver Charity Combatting Youth Homelessness Selected as One of Canada’s Top 10 Impact Charities for the 3rd Year in a Row

Social impact is primarily about changing lives, and Aunt Leah’s is very cost-effectively changing lives….

Aunt Leah’s Place, a Metro Vancouver charity providing housing, education, job training and support for youth aging out of foster care and young moms and babies, has been selected by Charity Intelligence (Ci), for the 3rd year in a row, as one of Canada’s Top 10 Impact Charities for 2019.

“We want to thank Charity Intelligence for this recognition and for supporting youth in and from foster care and mothers in need. We have worked hard to respond to the individuals we support with caring and thoughtful programs and projects that reflect their needs and desires.” says Executive Director, Sarah Stewart. “This recognition wouldn’t have been possible without the support we’ve received from our volunteers, donors, partners and staff.”

Charity Intelligence’s rigorous analysis measures the “difference”, or the impact, charities make. Of the 203 Canadian charities that Charity Intelligence analysed for impact, Aunt Leah’s was evaluated as one of the Top 10 Impact Charities in Canada, delivering returns of 7 times for every dollar donated, compared with average returns of 1-2 times on the dollar. Aunt Leah’s is the only charity in BC to be selected for this prestigious award.

According to Greg Thomson, Director of Research at Charity Intelligence, “Social impact is primarily about changing lives, and Aunt Leah’s is very cost-effectively changing lives in two main ways. First, it breaks the cycle of foster care by supporting young mothers and preventing their babies from going into foster care. And second, it helps bridge the gap for kids who “age-out” of the foster system with housing and finding jobs. Charity Intelligence finds Aunt Leah’s to be a High Impact charity.”

A University of Victoria report, Avoiding the Precipice, found that almost half of kids in foster care will experience homelessness when they age out of care at 19. In contrast, the study found that Aunt Leah’s services and supports helped former foster youth avoid homelessness and maintain market housing. The study showed that an average of 86% of Aunt Leah’s participants were safe, independent and in housing. In 2016, 93% of moms leaving the Aunt Leah’s Threshold Program, a unique program that provides housing and support for homeless moms and their children, secured safe housing and maintained custody of their children.

Aunt Leah’s Mom House provided sixteen-year-old Sherry with a home and the support she needed to take care of her infant daughter, Marcella. Now in grade 4, Marcella is thriving and a top student in her class. Sherry was recently accepted to the Native Education College and is chasing her dreams of becoming a family and community counsellor. Her hope is to become an advocate for other young moms and former youth in care.

“Currently, BC’s foster care system is not only a pipeline to future homelessness, but also a pipeline from and back to itself, due to early and unplanned pregnancies. Aunt Leah’s has responded to this crisis by helping young women in need – who we know can succeed when surrounded by supportive allies and resources– thus preventing another generation of children and babies from entering the system.” says Stewart.

Aunt Leah’s has a long tradition of social entrepreneurship, operating several businesses which both give employment opportunities to youth from care and generate almost 20% of its annual revenue.

Aunt Leah’s Tree Lot, opening November 21st, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. The Tree Lot, with 6 Metro Vancouver locations, is the biggest revenue generator for the organization, with 100% of profits from the sale of the trees going to support the housing programs. In addition, Aunt Leah’s youth gain valuable job experience working on the lots.

“One person, one volunteer, one tree can do a lot to ensure that foster youth don’t end up homeless.” says Hope Rayson, volunteer manager. “For 25 years an Aunt Leah’s Christmas tree has been a cherished part of many Vancouver families’ Christmas tradition.”

About Charity Intelligence: Charity Intelligence researches Canadian charities for donors. Charity Intelligence’s website (http://www.charityintelligence.ca) reviews and rates over 750 Canadian charities as well as providing in-depth reports on philanthropic sectors like Canada’s environment, cancer, and homelessness.

Bipartisan Legislation Increasing Research Funding to Improve Diagnosis Introduced in U.S. House Following SIDM Research Release

“This legislation moves the research community toward identifying solutions to equip clinicians, patients and their families with the tools needed to arrive at the right diagnosis,” said Paul L. Epner, chief executive officer and co-founder of SIDM.

Congress took steps this month to increase the federal government’s investment in research designed to improve the quality and safety of medical diagnoses. Bipartisan legislation, Improving Diagnosis in Medicine Act of 2019, was introduced by U.S. House Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) and Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) on November 13.

The legislation comes four months after the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM) released new research on Capitol Hill showing that inaccurate and delayed diagnoses are the most common, catastrophic, and costly of all medical errors in the U.S. healthcare system.

According to the bill’s authors, the legislation aims to increase researchers’ capacity to develop and test solutions to improve diagnostic quality and safety. It also establishes an HHS Interagency Council to identify and coordinate healthcare research related to reducing diagnostic errors. Finally, it adds diagnosis as new category to the federal database that formally tracks health research funding.

Last week hundreds of researchers, patients, and clinicians focused on improving diagnosis came together to discuss specific strategies to improve diagnosis in practice and showcase areas in need of increased research at the SIDM Diagnostic Error in Medicine 12th Annual International Conference. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) announced at the conference his intention to introduce a companion bill in the Senate.

“Diagnostic error is the most common, most costly, and most catastrophic of serious medical errors. Relative to its public health footprint, diagnostic error is the most under-recognized, under-studied, and under-remediated threat to patient safety in our health care system,” said Paul L. Epner, chief executive officer and co-founder of the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine. “Much of the limited research into diagnostic error has focused on defining the magnitude of the problem. This legislation moves the research community toward identifying solutions to equip clinicians, patients and their families with the tools needed to arrive at the right diagnosis. “It is heartening to see Representatives Luján and Bilirakis work together to improve healthcare safety. We look forward to the bill being passed by the House and Senate and signed into law.”

The bill also calls on the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to establish Research Centers of Diagnostic Excellence and support grants to increase research focused on diagnosis. The Interagency Council established by the legislation would be chaired by AHRQ, with senior-level representation from the National Institutes of Health, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The Council would be charged with developing a federal strategic plan to strengthen diagnostic quality and safety research and report to Congress bi-annually on progress against that plan.

Full text of the legislation can be found here.

We work in partnership with patients, their families, the healthcare community and every interested stakeholder. SIDM is the only organization focused solely on the problem of diagnostic error and improving the accuracy and timeliness of diagnosis. In 2015, SIDM established the Coalition to Improve Diagnosis to increase awareness and actions that improve diagnosis. Members of the Coalition represent hundreds of thousands of healthcare providers and patients—and the leading health organizations and government agencies involved in patient care. 2019 AKTIV Against Cancer Benefit Raises a Record $100,000

AKTIV Against Cancer, the organization co-founded by legendary runner Grete Waitz, and Helle Aanesen, today announced that their fifth annual awards luncheon generated in excess of $100,000 in donations, the largest sum ever for the event.

AKTIV Against Cancer, the organization co-founded by legendary runner Grete Waitz, and Helle Aanesen, today announced that their fifth annual awards luncheon generated in excess of $100,000 in donations, the largest sum ever for the event. This year’s awards lunch was held at the New York Athletic Club on Wednesday November 14, and had author, television host, entrepreneur and philanthropist Chip Gaines as the recipient of the AKTIV Against Cancer Award. Gaines accepted the award in memory of the late elite runner Gabe Grunewald, who passed away earlier this year and had become close with Gaines and his wife Joanna. This year’s event was also hosted by motivational speaker, former American professional soccer player, winner of Survivor: Africa Ethan Zohn. Zohn is also a two-time cancer survivor and supporter of the organization.

“It’s bittersweet, for sure, but I was honored and humbled to receive this award. Gabe Grunewald made a lasting impression on everyone who knew her and I have no doubt her story will only continue to serve as an inspiration for others,” Gaines said. “I am determined to continue fighting this fight in her honor and doing my part to help further advance rare cancer research.”

Gaines is the co-founder of Magnolia, a Waco, Texas-based company he started with Joanna in 2003. In 2018, Chip launched Magnolia’s inaugural Silo District Marathon following a chance meeting with past AKTIV Against Cancer Inspiration Award recipient Grunewald. Since then, Chip has helped raise more than $1 million for the Brave Like Gabe Foundation – it is because of these philanthropic endeavors that AKTIV Against Cancer chose to honor Chip Gaines as the recipient of this year’s award.

In addition to the award to Gaines, AKTIV Against Cancer also honored two supporters for their work. Cancer survivor and advocate Aubrey Barr, who has run over 30 marathons with Fred’s Team, including the New York City Marathon and the Boston Marathon. Additionally, longtime Fred’s Team coach Jeff Rochford has trained and coached thousands of Fred’s Team runners across finish lines. Fred’s Team, named in honor of New York City Marathon co-founder Fred Lebow, is Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s running program, which has raised more than $85 million for cancer research since 1995.

The luncheon was supported by Discovery, adidas and the May and Samuel Rudin Family Foundation. Previous honorees of this award include Dr. Jordan Metzl & Kikkan Randall (2018), The Rudin Family & the late Gabriel Grunewald (2017), Meb Keflezighi (2016), and Mary Wittenberg (2015).
