Horizon Healthcare Services, Inc. Collaborates with HGE Health to help Providers improve the Pulmonary/COPD Health Status of its Members

“HGE Health will offer Horizon members service and support that makes health care work the way it should – better quality care, an improved patient experience, and lower overall costs,” said Robert J. Franzoi, Vice President Healthcare Management for Horizon.

HGE Health, a healthcare technology company that works worldwide with pulmonologists, primary care physicians and patients, will be contracting with Horizon Healthcare Services, Inc., New Jersey’s largest health insurer with approximately 3.4 million members, to collaborate with it on improving the Pulmonary/COPD Health Status of its Members.

With this collaboration, which is being finalized for implementation starting in early 2020, HGE’s technology and remote patient monitoring services will help Horizon members better control their pulmonary/COPD issues, greatly reducing clinical exacerbations, ER presentations, hospital admissions and related medical costs attributable to COPD symptoms.

“This is an exciting opportunity for HGE to accelerate data-driven personalized medicine and help physicians better direct the health and disease issues of their patients while supporting health plans in controlling the cost of that care,” said Michael J. Markus, PhD, CEO of HGE Health. “Horizon is a proven leader when it comes to providing tools to employers and health care professionals that help them improve the health and well-being of their employees and patients. We’re excited to unite our mutual capabilities towards that goal, especially where COPD and pulmonary issues are concerned.”

Based in Philadelphia, HGE Health has built an international reputation in the field of COPD and pulmonary medicine, helping COPD, lung transplant and other respiratory patients and their physicians control pulmonary issues.

A growing and devastating disease, COPD is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. An estimated 12.7 million American adults are diagnosed with the condition every year and an almost equal number are believed to be undiagnosed. Hospital discharges related to COPD typically exceed 700,000 in the U.S. alone. The costs of managing COPD in the U.S. have been estimated to be nearly $50 billion annually, including $29.5 billion in direct healthcare expenditures, $8 billion in indirect morbidity costs and $12.4 billion in indirect mortality costs.

The HGE digital platform and technology-enabled services, called HGE Care, allows pulmonary and primary care physicians to remotely care for a patient from anywhere in the nation, and help patients better understand and manage changes in their COPD symptoms. The HGE Care platform identifies early changes in a patient’s respiratory symptoms and prompts a patient’s own physician to initiate a clinical response, often before patients themselves would have previously sought medical attention. Thanks to daily digital interaction with their healthcare team, patients are better engaged in their own symptom management, and log their symptoms on the HGE Care platform over 80% – 90% of the time. Patients enjoy peace of mind that each day they experience a change from their typical COPD symptoms, their own physician/care team provides same-day feedback, helping patients breathe easier, avoid ER presentations and hospital admissions, and enjoy an improved quality of life, all while reducing overall healthcare cost for patients and health systems.

In collaboration with Horizon and at no cost to its Members, HGE Health will be working with physicians in New Jersey to launch this new program and to identify, onboard, and support Horizon’s Members who are living with COPD and that the program would benefit.

“Helping our members achieve their best health means providing them the support and tools they need to effectively manage their health challenges and HGE will give patients living with chronic conditions that affect their ability to breath, like COPD, a direct and real-time link to their doctors,” said Robert J. Franzoi, Vice President Healthcare Management for Horizon. “HGE Health will offer Horizon members service and support that makes health care work the way it should. Their innovative service model has been clinically proven to meaningfully improve the lives of the patients it serves and lower the overall cost of care by helping reduce emergency room presentations and inpatient admissions. Better quality care, an improved patient experience, and lower overall costs is exactly the kind of solution Horizon eagerly embraces and we’re excited to be among the first health insurers in the nation to contract with HGE Health.”

About HGE Health

Headquartered in Philadelphia, HGE Health harnesses its deep experience in chronic disease management and digital health in pulmonary disease, telemedicine and mobile health to develop a clinical services platform that delivers better care faster at a much lower cost for patients, physicians and payors. Built on clinical protocols developed and supported by 16 years of research, the company’s technology has compiled the longest-running and world’s largest longitudinal data set of COPD symptoms, interventions, and clinical management to help physicians provide care for a geographically and socio-economically diverse COPD and pulmonary patient population.

NeoTract Designates Dr. Bhavik Shah as UroLift® Center of Excellence

News Image

“Dr. Bhavik Shah has earned the UroLift Center of Excellence designation for his dedication to improving the lives of men who previously suffered from BPH symptoms and delivering superior patient outcomes with the UroLift System treatment,” said Dave Amerson

NeoTract, a wholly owned subsidiary of Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE:TFX) focused on addressing unmet needs in the field of urology, today announced that Dr. Bhavik Shah, MD, Advanced Urology in Decatur, GA has been designated as a UroLift® Center of Excellence. The designation recognizes that Dr. Shah has achieved a high level of training and experience with the UroLift® System and demonstrated a commitment to exemplary care for men suffering from symptoms associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate.

Recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines, the FDA-cleared Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH. The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue.

The UroLift Center of Excellence program is designed to highlight urologists who are committed to educating their patients on BPH and the UroLift System as a treatment option and consistently seek to deliver excellent patient outcomes and experiences.

“Dr. Bhavik Shah has earned the UroLift Center of Excellence designation for his dedication to improving the lives of men who previously suffered from BPH symptoms and delivering superior patient outcomes with the UroLift System treatment,” said Dave Amerson, president of the Teleflex Interventional Urology business unit.

Over 40 million men in the United States are affected by BPH, a condition that occurs when the prostate gland that surrounds the male urethra becomes enlarged with advancing age and begins to obstruct the urinary system. Symptoms of BPH often include interrupted sleep and urinary problems and can cause loss of productivity, depression and decreased quality of life.

Medication is often the first-line therapy for enlarged prostate, but relief can be inadequate and temporary. Side effects of medication treatment can include sexual dysfunction, dizziness and headaches, prompting many patients to quit using the drugs. For these patients, the classic alternative is surgery that cuts, heats or removes prostate tissue to open the blocked urethra. While current surgical options can be very effective in relieving symptoms, they can also leave patients with permanent side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and retrograde ejaculation.

About the UroLift® System

The FDA-cleared UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a minimally invasive transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue. Clinical data from a pivotal 206-patient randomized controlled study showed that patients with enlarged prostate receiving UroLift implants reported rapid and durable symptomatic and urinary flow rate improvement without compromising sexual function*1,2. Patients also experienced a significant improvement in quality of life. Over 100,000 men have been treated with the UroLift System in the U.S. Most common adverse events reported include hematuria, dysuria, micturition urgency, pelvic pain, and urge incontinence. Most symptoms were mild to moderate in severity and resolved within two to four weeks after the procedure. The Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines. The UroLift System is available in the U.S., Europe, Australia, Canada, Mexico and South Korea. Learn more at http://www.UroLift.com.

Researchers Identify Potential Formula for Blood Cancer Vaccine

Researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have discovered a way to move precision immunotherapy forward by using genomics to inform immunotherapy for multiple myeloma, a blood cancer, according to a study published in Clinical Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, in December.

This is the first study to experimentally determine which byproducts from the mutation of tumors (known as neoantigens) have the ability to provoke the immune system into recognizing and killing cancer cells in multiple myeloma patients. The results provide the foundation for using neoantigen-targeting strategies such as cancer vaccines in future trials for multiple myeloma patients. Multiple myeloma is a malignancy of plasma cells affecting 30,000 people a year.

Next-generation sequencing data was analyzed to describe the landscape of neoantigens in 184 patients, and researchers identified neoantigen-specific immune cells triggered by immunotherapy. Additionally, they showed an increase in neoantigens in patients who had relapsed myeloma versus new patients, which may indicate potential for greater immune responses to immunotherapy in these patients. The study also identifies common neoantigens between patients, which could lead to new vaccine therapies.

“Tumor neoantigens represent excellent targets for immunotherapy, due to their specific expression in cancer tissue,” said Samir Parekh, MD, Associate Professor of Oncological Sciences and Medicine (Hematology and Medical Oncology) at the Icahn School of Medicine. “Until now, there has been no direct evidence that DNA mutations induce neoantigen-specific T-cell responses following immunotherapy in multiple myeloma.”

Stemming from this research, co-author Nina Bhardwaj, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine (Hematology and Medical Oncology) at the Icahn School of Medicine, and colleagues are pursuing a clinical trial investigating the safety and responsiveness of a personalized neoantigen vaccine for the treatment of cancers including multiple myeloma.

This study was supported by the NIH (R21 CA223953) and the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.

Will Shields and Dan Pastorini Selected to 2020 East-West Shrine Bowl Hall of Fame

News Image

The East-West Shrine Bowl™, college football’s oldest all-star game, announced today that NFL legends Will Shields and Dan Pastorini will be inducted into the East-West Shrine Bowl Hall of Fame on the evening of January 17 during the Players/Hall of Fame reception the night before the game.

The East-West Shrine Bowl has seen some of the greatest names in NFL history play in its game prior to their successful pro careers. Names such as Walter Payton, John Elway, Tom Brady, Roger Staubach, Brett Favre, Tony Dungy, Lawrence Taylor and Larry Csonka are just a few of the Pro Football Hall of Famers and Pro Bowlers who have played in the game since its inception in 1925.

“The addition of Will Shields and Dan Pastorini to our East-West Shrine Bowl Hall of Fame will be the highlight of our weekend,” said Bob Roller, executive director of the event. “Will Shields already owns a gold jacket as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame from his tremendous career with the Kansas City Chiefs, while Dan Pastorini thrilled fans of four NFL teams back in the 1970s. They both bring their unique story of how the Shrine Bowl helped launch their career.”

Will Shields

Will Shields is a former college and professional football player who was an offensive guard in the NFL for 14 seasons and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015. He was selected in the third round (74th overall) by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1993 NFL Draft.

Throughout his seasons with the Chiefs, Shields never missed a game. He played in 224 games, three All-Pro Selections, and went to 12 straight Pro Bowls. He also won four division titles, made six playoff appearances and was named to the NFL “All-Decade Team” of the 2000s.

Shields played in the 1993 East-West Shrine Bowl, which, he said, is actually the only exposure he had to NFL coaches. The only team he had a meeting with is the team that drafted him (Kansas City Chiefs). During that week, he was also able to spend time with the children at Shriners Hospitals. “I loved it; it was excellent going there and it’s a cool factor being able to give back and be a part of that community,” said Shields. “You’ve been given a gift or a talent and now you can utilize that to help others.”

Although retired, Shields is still heavily involved in helping the community. He has a fitness center in Overland Park, Kansas, and also helps players who are transitioning out of the NFL. His Will to Succeed foundation, which was established in 1993, seeks to “guide & inspire, empower & improve the lives of those less fortunate by providing financial, educational and other everyday resources to those identified as most in need.”

Dan Pastorini

Dan Pastorini was the quarterback for Santa Clara University from 1968 to 1971. He was a Second-Team AP Little All-American selection, and ranked in the top 10 in nine of the school’s all-time passing records. He was drafted third overall by the Houston Oilers in the 1971 NFL Draft.

In 1975, Pastorini was also named to the AFC Pro Bowl team. In 1978, he threw for a career-high 2,473 yards and 16 touchdowns. After his career with the Oilers, Pastorini was traded to the Oakland Raiders (where he was a member of the 1980 Super Bowl championship team), the Los Angeles Rams, and the Philadelphia Eagles before retiring in 1983.

As the first son of a Shriner to play in the game, participating in the 1971 East-West Shrine

Bowl was a special honor for Pastorini. “I was fortunate enough to be selected captain of the team and I had a very good game,” he said. “I got MVP of the game and set a record field goal.”

Pastorini is most proud of the charitable work that he is involved in. His foundation, Dan Pastorini Charity, assists in raising funds for and awareness of several charities, including Be An Angel, which he has been involved with for 30 years. He has been selected Chairman of the Board of Be An Angel Foundation, which helps profoundly deaf children, or children with multiple disabilities, by helping them obtain the equipment and care they need to improve their quality of life.

Pastorini is grateful for his East-West Shrine Bowl experience, and for receiving this distinction. “I would never have been selected as the third pick in the first round of the NFL draft if it weren’t for the opportunity to play in the East-West Shrine Bowl,” he said. “I’m truly honored to be in this year’s Hall of Fame.”

The 2020 East-West Shrine Bowl will be played on Saturday, January 18, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, and will be televised live on NFL Network.

About the East-West Shrine Bowl

The East-West Shrine Bowl is the longest running college all-star football game in the nation. Since 1925, the game has benefited Shriners Hospitals for Children and its mission to provide advanced care for children with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate. Caring for Transgender Persons: What Clinicians Should Know

One of the biggest barriers to care for transgender individuals is a lack of knowledgeable providers. In a move that reflects a growing recognition of transgender care needs within established medicine in the United States, The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) published a new review on the topic authored by experts from the Mount Sinai Health System.

The new review, titled “Care of Transgender Persons,” appears in the December 19 issue of NEJM. It aims to serve as a fundamental resource to help the medical community separate what is known from what is not in transgender health care.

In the United States, studies estimate that approximately 150,000 youths and 1.4 million adults identify as transgender. As sociocultural acceptance patterns evolve, clinicians will likely care for an increasing number of transgender people.

“The intention of the review is to provide straightforward guidance to address the gap that transgender individuals may face in their care,” said the lead author of the review, Joshua Safer, MD, Executive Director of the Mount Sinai Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery, and Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Bone Disease) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

The feature begins with a case vignette that highlights a common clinical problem. Evidence supporting various strategies is then presented, followed by a review of formal guidelines, when they exist. Dr. Safer and his colleague, Vin Tangpricha, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, then provide clinical recommendations.

Recommendations from the review include:

  • Determining readiness for treatment for those who seek it by establishing that the patient has persistent gender incongruence and is competent to make medical decisions.
  • Prescribing and managing hormone therapy based on expected impact and awareness of the potential adverse effects of the treatment.
  • Screening by the clinician or mental health consultant for mental health conditions that may confound the assessment of gender identity or complicate management of care.
  • Understanding the various surgical options for transgender individuals with consideration of the challenges associated with each.

“The most influential vehicle to effect long-lasting, meaningful change across current and future generations of clinicians in all specialties caring for transgender individuals is education,” added Dr. Safer.
