UrgentCareTravel Offers Free DOT Physicals for Former Celadon Drivers

Many Celadon drivers are due for their mandatory DOT Physical, so offering these drivers a free DOT Physical is our way to help these drivers maintain their Commercial Drivers License as they seek employment with another fleet.

UrgentCareTravel (UCT) announces that it is offering free DOT Physicals to former Celadon drivers who lost their job due to Celadon’s bankruptcy. The free DOT Physical offer runs through March 31, 2020 and is available at all UrgentCareTravel clinics across the country. Former Celadon drivers need to show proof of their Celadon employment to qualify for the free DOT Physical offer.

“Celadon drivers losing their job right before the holidays is very stressful for themselves and their family,” said Siva Suresh, Founder and CEO of UrgentCareTravel. “Many Celadon drivers are due for their mandatory DOT Physical, so offering these drivers a free DOT Physical is our way to help these drivers maintain their Commercial Drivers License as they seek employment with another fleet.”

About UrgentCareTravel

UrgentCareTravel, with walk-in medical clinics located at Pilot and Flying J travel centers, is the only medical clinic network focused on providing convenient and affordable health care for professional truck drivers. 48% of professional drivers have a chronic condition (diabetes, hypertension, obesity) that restricts their Commercial Drivers License to 1 year of less. Due to the lack of convenient medical care on the road where drivers work, and the high costs of health insurance and medical care, many drivers do not treat their chronic conditions as needed. Left untreated, these conditions worsen, eventually leading to job loss, income loss, health complications or worse.

UrgentCareTravel focuses on Chronic Care Management (CCM) with its UCT Truckers Health Team, an affordable monthly membership program that includes Health Coaches, Personalized Care Plans for chronic conditions, no deductible / no co-pay in-clinic services (including DOT Physicals) and pharmacy services. UCT Truckers Health Team can have a great impact on driver health, driver productivity, driver career longevity and fleet profitability.

Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer Updates its Clinical Immunotherapy Treatment Guidelines for Advanced Renal Cell Carcinoma

SITC Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines

“Through initiatives like the SITC Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines, SITC seeks to provide an important and well documented resource of information to oncologists and other clinical care providers so that they can achieve the best outcomes for their patients,” said SITC President Mario Sznol, MD.

Motivated by the substantial progress in translational and clinical research and improved clinical outcomes seen in recent years, the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) today published updated Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines for the treatment of patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma.

The Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer consensus statement on immunotherapy for the treatment of advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC),” authored under the guidance of the SITC Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines Renal Cell Carcinoma Subcommittee, provides oncologists and other advanced practice providers an updated clinical roadmap to treating this disease with immunotherapies approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), including the promising class of therapies known as checkpoint inhibitors.

“Immunotherapies using interferon-alpha and interleukin-2 have been the only available options for initial treatment of patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma for the past couple of decades and some patients have benefited tremendously,” said Michael B. Atkins, MD, co-chair of the SITC Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines Renal Cell Carcinoma Subcommittee. “Now that checkpoint inhibitors are FDA-approved and available for a broad population of patients, our SITC subcommittee developed this manuscript to help provide medical oncologists with expert guidance for incorporating various immunotherapy agents and regimens into their practice.”

The SITC guidelines are comprised of consensus expert recommendations that serve to inform clinicians about all aspects of patient management for advanced renal cell carcinoma during immunotherapy. Updated to reflect the U.S. FDA approval of checkpoint inhibitors as front-line treatments for renal cell carcinoma, the publication includes consensus statements on treatment selection and sequencing, the use of predictive biomarkers and appropriate patient testing, and the management of adverse events. Published in the Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer (JITC), the society’s open access, peer-reviewed online journal, the guidelines are an update to the society’s previously published renal cell carcinoma treatment recommendations from November 2016.

“One of the most important objectives for SITC is to disseminate the latest advances in cancer immunotherapy research,” said SITC President Mario Sznol, MD. “Through initiatives like the SITC Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines, SITC seeks to provide an important and well documented resource of information to oncologists and other clinical care providers so that they can achieve the best outcomes for their patients.”

The SITC Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines are a collection of unbiased consensus statements developed by leading experts to help oncologists determine when and how to best use immunotherapy to treat their patients. SITC has published Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines on cutaneous melanoma, prostate and bladder carcinomas, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, non-small cell lung cancer and hematologic malignancies. Additional guidelines are in development covering acute leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma and immune-related adverse events.

Join Free Webinar to Learn More about these Guidelines with Leading Experts

Oncologists, nurses and other members of the cancer care team can continue their learning by participating in a free SITC webinar dedicated to discussion of the HNSCC guidelines on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020, at 11 a.m. EST. The following experts will present during the free webinar and lead a question-and-answer session with participants: Michael B. Atkins, MD (Georgetown-Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center); Dena Battle (KCCure); David McDermott, MD (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center); and Brian Rini, MD (Vanderbilt University Medical Center).

This activity is approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ and is eligible for ACPE and ANCC credit, see registration website for details. The webinar is jointly provided by Postgraduate Institute for Medicine and the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer. It is supported, in part, by independent medical education grant funding from Amgen, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP, Celgene Corporation and Merck & Co., Inc.

Details of this webinar, including how attendees can register, are available on the SITC website, SITC Cancer Immunotherapy CONNECT.

New pneumococcal vaccine from Serum Institute of India achieves WHO prequalification

PNEUMOSIL®, a vaccine against a leading cause of deadly childhood pneumonia—the pneumococcus bacterium—has achieved prequalification by the World Health Organization (WHO). Developed though a collaboration spanning over a decade between Serum Institute of India, Pvt., Ltd. (SIIPL) and PATH and with funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the vaccine is expected to provide protection for children on par with other pneumococcal conjugate vaccines at a price that is more affordable for low- and middle-income countries.

Prequalification allows PNEUMOSIL® to be procured by United Nations agencies and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. This news marks an important milestone toward alleviating one of the biggest barriers to sustainable access to pneumococcal conjugate vaccine that countries face—price.

“PNEUMOSIL® can be manufactured at high volume with current capacity at 100 million doses per annum, which will be augmented to over 150 million doses per annum in two to three years. It will be made available at a target Gavi price of around US$2 per dose, which is roughly 30% less than the current Gavi price for these kinds of vaccines,” says Dr. Rajeev Dhere, executive director of SIIPL.

“The vaccine provides an alternate vaccine for low- and middle-income countries to ensure lifesaving access to pneumococcal disease prevention over the long term,” explains Dr. Mark Alderson, director of PATH’s pneumococcal vaccine project.

Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines have helped significantly reduce pneumococcal deaths and illness where introduced but are difficult for many countries to afford without considerable donor financial support. Although such support has been instrumental in helping to expand country access, implementing and sustaining pneumococcal vaccine programs continues to be difficult for many countries due to the vaccine price. PNEUMOSIL® addresses a need for a more affordable option that can make access easier for nations and free up country and donor funds for other health priorities.

“There has been unprecedented demand for the pneumococcal vaccine from Gavi-supported countries,” says Dr Seth Berkley, CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. “Within the last decade, we have supported the vaccination of 185 million children against this leading killer of children—but there is still work to be done. This new vaccine gives us more options in the fight to ensure no child dies from this preventable and treatable disease.”

“Vaccines are one of the best investments we can make to give every child a healthy start at life and build stronger communities and economies,” said Dr. Keith Klugman, director of the pneumonia team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. “As pneumonia continues to be the leading cause of death for young children worldwide, we welcome this new vaccine that will allow for more children to be protected from this debilitating disease.”

In addition to pneumonia, the pneumococcus bacterium causes other serious, life-threatening diseases like meningitis and sepsis. It is estimated to cause nearly 400,000 deaths in children under five years of age each year worldwide.

PNEUMOSIL® covers the types of the bacterium most likely to cause serious illness in low- and middle-income countries. Its manufacturing process has been optimized to make it more efficient—reducing costs while preserving vaccine quality and making the vaccine a more affordable option for countries with the highest burdens of pneumococcal disease.

“Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines are among the most complex vaccines to manufacture. As a vaccine developed and produced in India that will benefit the world, PNEUMOSIL®’s WHO prequalification is a landmark achievement,” adds Mr. Neeraj Jain, PATH country director in India.

Prior to WHO prequalification, a recent PATH-sponsored Phase 3 clinical study of PNEUMOSIL® in infants in The Gambia was conducted at the MRC Unit in The Gambia—part of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The study provided the pivotal results for the data package required for WHO prequalification. In the study, the vaccine met all primary and secondary endpoints with key findings showing the vaccine to have an acceptable safety profile and to generate a protective immune response similar to a WHO-prequalified comparator pneumococcal vaccine without interfering with other routine childhood immunizations. These results were presented at the 2019 European Symposium on Pediatric Infectious Diseases and a study manuscript is in preparation for peer-reviewed publication. Other study collaborators included FHI Clinical and the WHO Reference Laboratory for Pneumococcal Serology at the Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, University College London.

Mediaplanet and Healthcare Experts Team Up to Spotlight Important Health and Safety Tools This Flu Season

News Image

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that influenza claims the lives of between 12,000 and 61,000 annually and a shocking 80,000 in 2017.

As flu season continues, Mediaplanet today announces the launch of this December’s edition of “Fighting the Flu.” This campaign spotlights the dangers of the influenza virus, which is extremely common and, in some cases, deadly. Healthcare experts and other advocates point to key steps to prevent the flu, especially among children, as well as how to care for those who are ill.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that influenza claims the lives of between 12,000 and 61,000 annually and a shocking 80,000 in 2017. Some experts say an influenza pandemic in the future is possible, which is why researchers are working hard to create new and more effective treatments to fight the illness. In the meantime, experts across the board urge everyone who can get the influenza vaccine, as it is the single best defense there is against the virus. Experts also advise washing hands often and thoroughly with soap and water, disinfecting all surfaces, and avoiding contact with the nose, eyes, and mouth.

The print component of “Fighting the Flu” is distributed within today’s edition of USA Today in Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, South Florida, New York, and Washington DC/Baltimore markets, with a circulation of approximately 200,000 copies and an estimated readership of 600,000. The digital component is distributed nationally, through a vast social media strategy, and across a network of top news sites and partner outlets. To explore the digital version of the campaign, visit: https://www.futureofpersonalhealth.com/campaign/fighting-the-flu/

The family of a young mother who lost her life after a weeks-long battle with an aggressive strain of flu virus, shares her story within the publication, in the hopes their tragedy will encourage others to take important prevention steps. Kendra Mann-O’Brien was a healthy mother of two when she caught the virus, which progressed rapidly and, despite life-saving efforts, eventually claimed her life. Her mother, Joan, is now an outspoken advocate for the flu vaccine, which is the single best way to prevent the spread of the illness and its associated complications.

Online, celebrity doctor, Dr. Oz, shares his best tips for flu prevention and care. In addition to getting the vaccine and regularly washing hands, Dr. Oz advises making healthy choices to strengthen and support the immune system. “Sleeping for seven to nine hours a night is a good way to do this, since sleep is an important regulator of immune function,” he says, continuing, “Eating lots of fruits and vegetables and other foods rich in vitamin C, vitamin B6, and vitamin E will also help your immune system.”

This campaign was made possible with the support of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Families Fighting Flu, National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, American Hospital Association, American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Healthline, Commonwealth Care Alliance, National PTA, American Lung Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, HealthyChildren.org, Consumer Healthcare Products Association, American Pharmacists Association, Medical News Today, Prevention.com, Dr. Oz, Luden’s, Chloraseptic, CleanWell, Nissin Foods, Carmex, and Dollar Tree.

Inland Detox Expands to Offer Residential Drug Rehab Covered by TRICARE Insurance

Drug and Alcohol Rehabs that take TRICARE

Drug and Alcohol Rehabs that take TRICARE

We’re thrilled to have been approved as an in-network provider of care by TRICARE. Our servicemen and women are a huge part of our community here in Southern California, and it’s an honor for us to serve them and their families in their time of need.

Inland Detox, Inc. now offers a long-term, residential drug and alcohol treatment program to serve those in need of addiction treatment in the Temecula Valley and throughout Southern California. Combined with Inland Detox’s CARF-accredited inpatient detox program, the new residential program provides clients with more in-depth counseling, group outings, and community engagement to build a solid foundation upon which they can build healthy, sober lives.

“While we were approved as a long-term residential treatment facility when we first obtained our license, we wanted to focus on building Southern California’s best inpatient detox program before tackling the next level of care,” said Kyle Hartfield, CEO of Inland Detox. “Now, we have added a robust, TRICARE covered drug rehab program to go along with our CARF-accredited detox, allowing clients to stay in a stable, caring environment throughout the entire spectrum of inpatient, residential addiction treatment. This new program will provide our clients with the services and amenities one would expect from a larger program in an intimate, home-like environment.”

Not only does Inland Detox now offer both inpatient detox and residential treatment, it is now an approved in-network provider with TRICARE, the health care program for uniformed service members, retirees, and their families. TRICARE is available to those who are registered in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS), which includes the following groups: active-duty service members, their spouses and dependents; National Guard and Reserve members, their spouses and dependents; and Medal of Honor recipients and their families.

“We’re thrilled to have been approved as an in-network provider of care by TRICARE. Our servicemen and women are a huge part of our community here in Southern California, and it’s an honor for us to serve them and their families in their time of need,” said Kenneth Corioso, founder and Chief Operating Officer of Inland Detox. “Many TRICARE recipients may not be aware that they can receive care at private, in-network facilities like ours, and we stand ready to serve them.”

Those who are covered by TRICARE may discover that finding alcohol and drug treatment programs that accept their insurance is difficult. “Given the abundance of advertisements directed at people seeking addiction treatment, it’s little wonder that it is difficult to filter through and find a provider that accepts TRICARE,” said Kyle Hartfield, CEO of Inland Detox, Inc. For those trying to find an in-network TRICARE drug rehab provider, there are a few ways to go about locating one. First, find your TRICARE insurance card, call the number on the back and ask for an in-network referral to a private facility. Alternatively, you can go online and search for terms like “alcohol rehabs that take TRICARE” to filter for programs that advertise their in-network status. Finally, you can reach out directly to treatment centers and ask them if they accept TRICARE. If they do not, they may be able to refer you to a program that does.

In addition to being in-network with TRICARE, Inland Detox also holds both a dual-diagnosis and an incidental medical services license. The incidental medical services license allows our healthcare practitioners to provide direct care related to substance use disorders within our facility. This means that clients can receive the care they need without traveling off-site for appointments with third-party providers of care. The dual-diagnosis treatment license allows Inland Detox to treat co-occurring mental health disorders alongside substance use disorders, allowing clients to address these issues within a single course of treatment.

About Inland Detox: Inland Detox is Southern California’s leading provider of inpatient drug and alcohol detox and residential addiction treatment. Conveniently located in Temecula, CA, Inland Detox serves clients from all across Southern California and throughout the United States. Our mission is to provide our clients with a safe, comfortable detox and residential addiction treatment program, providing them with the tools they need to build a life free from drugs and alcohol.

NeoTract Designates Dr. Adam Shrewsberry as UroLift® Center of Excellence

News Image

“This designation recognizes Dr. Adam Shrewsberry as a UroLift Center of Excellence for his commitment to providing safe and effective treatment to patients with BPH,” said Dave Amerson

NeoTract, a wholly owned subsidiary of Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE:TFX) focused on addressing unmet needs in the field of urology, today announced that Adam Shrewsberry M.D., Tennessee Urology in Oak Ridge, TN, has been designated as a UroLift® Center of Excellence. The designation recognizes that Dr. Shrewsberry has achieved a high level of training and experience with the UroLift® System and demonstrated a commitment to exemplary care for men suffering from symptoms associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate.

Recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines, the FDA-cleared Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH. The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue.

The UroLift Center of Excellence program is designed to highlight urologists who are committed to educating their patients on BPH and the UroLift System as a treatment option and consistently seek to deliver excellent patient outcomes and experiences.

“This designation recognizes Dr. Adam Shrewsberry as a UroLift Center of Excellence for his commitment to providing safe and effective treatment to patients with BPH,” said Dave Amerson, president of the Teleflex Interventional Urology business unit. “We are pleased to see the continued acceptance of the UroLift System as a standard of care treatment that may allow men to discontinue the use of BPH medications and improve their quality of life.”

Over 40 million men in the United States are affected by BPH, a condition that occurs when the prostate gland that surrounds the male urethra becomes enlarged with advancing age and begins to obstruct the urinary system. Symptoms of BPH often include interrupted sleep and urinary problems and can cause loss of productivity, depression and decreased quality of life.

Medication is often the first-line therapy for enlarged prostate, but relief can be inadequate and temporary. Side effects of medication treatment can include sexual dysfunction, dizziness and headaches, prompting many patients to quit using the drugs. For these patients, the classic alternative is surgery that cuts, heats or removes prostate tissue to open the blocked urethra. While current surgical options can be very effective in relieving symptoms, they can also leave patients with permanent side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and retrograde ejaculation.

About the UroLift® System

The FDA-cleared UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a minimally invasive transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue. Clinical data from a pivotal 206-patient randomized controlled study showed that patients with enlarged prostate receiving UroLift implants reported rapid and durable symptomatic and urinary flow rate improvement without compromising sexual function*1,2. Patients also experienced a significant improvement in quality of life. Over 100,000 men have been treated with the UroLift System in the U.S. Most common adverse events reported include hematuria, dysuria, micturition urgency, pelvic pain, and urge incontinence. Most symptoms were mild to moderate in severity and resolved within two to four weeks after the procedure. The Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines. The UroLift System is available in the U.S., Europe, Australia, Canada, Mexico and South Korea. Learn more at http://www.UroLift.com.

Mediaplanet today announces the launch of this December’s edition of “Lung Health.” This campaign will advocate for clean air and what we can do as people to enjoy a life with healthy lungs.

About 65 million people suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and 3 million die from it each year, making it the third leading cause of death worldwide. Dangers are lurking and actions must be taken to keep our planet safe and with the healthiest air possible. This campaign offers insight readers may have never known that will help them and their family and friends.

Sarcoidosis survivor Karen graces the cover of the print campaign. Karen shares her story of how she fought her battle with this disease and how Penn Medicine saved her. Mercy College Receives New York State Approval to Expand Nursing Program Online and at the Dobbs Ferry, Manhattan and Bronx Campuses

Mercy College

Mercy College is pleased to announce the official approval of the New York State Education Department to expand the College’s nursing programs to provide increased degree offerings online and at the Dobbs Ferry, MercyManhattan and Bronx Campuses. The new degree programs, part of the College’s School of Health and Natural Sciences, were added to help alleviate the nursing shortage in the Tri-State area and across the nation. The expanded programs also provided a seamless pathway for students to continue their education after the former College of New Rochelle (CNR) ceased academic operations in August 2019.

“Mercy College has established a comprehensive nursing program under the guidance of Dr. Deborah Hunt and Dr. Miriam Ford that will provide current and prospective nurses with numerous educational opportunities,” said Joan Toglia, Dean of the School of Health and Natural Sciences. “Mercy bridges the gap between what nursing students learn in a classroom setting and real-life experiences in a health care setting – resulting in sought after job placements of our graduates.”

“Having a quality academic institution like Mercy College anticipate and respond to the needs of the market helps provide economic value to the entire Tri-State region,” said William M. Mooney, Jr., President and CEO of The Westchester County Association. “We are looking forward to working with the College as it helps to fill the region’s nursing shortage.”

Mercy’s four-year traditional nursing program, which launched in 2015 and has been at capacity since its inception, has now tripled in size. The first cohort of 23 students were recognized at a pinning ceremony in May 2019 and on December 20, 2019, the first cohort of 106 teach-out students from the former CNR will celebrate their pinning ceremony.

“There’s great demand for highly trained nurses,” explained Deborah Hunt ‘86, Ph.D., R.N., Professor and Executive Director of Nursing Special Programs, and former Interim Dean of CNR’s School of Nursing and Health Professions. “Mercy is providing nursing programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels as patient demands become more complex and the aging population requires increased levels of care and nurses who practice from a holistic perspective who are able to think critically, utilize current evidence, and promote positive patient outcomes.”

Based on unemployment projections by The Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is an estimated need for more than 200,000 new registered nurses each year through 2026 to help fill jobs vacated by retirees. Mercy is working to combat this decline by increasing the nursing talent in our communities through in-demand undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Undergraduate programs include the Accelerated Second Degree in Nursing, Traditional Nursing (four-year program) and the R.N. to B.S. program. The College also offers opportunities for nurses to earn their master’s degrees in three areas, including Family Nurse Practitioner, Nursing Administration and Nursing Education. The College is planning to offer additional nursing programs in the future and has applied for approval to teach Traditional Nursing in the Bronx.

“It is important to tailor courses for busy nurse professionals,” said Miriam Ford, Ph.D, FNP-BC, Chief Nurse Administrator and Director of Dobbs Ferry and MercyManhattan. “These new program offerings at multiple locations will ensure student success by providing individualized attention, convenient scheduling and small class sizes.”

In addition to new course offerings, the College has created state-of-the-art classrooms that replicate real-world clinical lab and hospital environments. They include the Health Professions Clinical Simulation Lab, Hospital Simulation Lab and a cutting-edge 12,000 square foot space that includes specialized labs designed to simulate different disciplines within a health care facility. In addition, nursing students have access to the Health Assessment Lab which allows them to learn to conduct health assessments in a setting supplied with equipment typically seen in hospitals and clinics.
