Cardea Bio Seeks to Accelerate Corporate Vision, Adds 3 Seasoned Executives to Senior Leadership Team

“We are thrilled to bring these exceptional people onboard to realize our vision of helping the world Conduct Biology™,” Says CEO, Michael Heltzen

Cardea Bio, a new (bio)technology infrastructure company pioneering the development of biology-gated transistors to integrate biology and electronics, announced today that it has added four highly successful and experienced leaders to its senior management team.

  • Dr. Paul Grint as Chairman of Innovation Council
  • Jonathan Seaton as Senior Vice President, Corporate & Business Development
  • Rob Lozuk as Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations

With decades of combined experience ranging from Paul Grint’s time as the former CEO of AmpliPhi and an Illumina Board member, Jonathan Seaton, Illumina’s former Senior Vice President (SVP) of Corporate & Business Development, after VP positions at BD Life Sciences and Roche, and Rob Lozuk’s executive positions at Sequenom and Thermo Fisher Scientific, Cardea has just positioned itself for accelerated growth under an experienced leadership team.

“This talent infusion enables Cardea to accelerate our business while validating the attractiveness of our vision and the substantial opportunity in front of us. We are thrilled to bring these exceptional people onboard to realize our vision of helping the world Conduct Biology™,” says CEO, Michael Heltzen.

Cardea has appointed Paul Grint, MD as its Chairman of the inaugural Cardea Innovation Council. In this position, Dr. Grint will lead a group of high-profile Innovation advisors and experts, who will be announced later in Q1 2020. Dr. Grint is a proven biotechnology executive with more than two decades of experience leading both established and emerging biotech companies working in the areas of infectious disease, immunology, and oncology.

Most recently, Dr. Grint was CEO and a member of the board of directors of AmpliPhi Biosciences, which recently merged with C3J Therapeutics to form Armata Pharmaceuticals. Dr. Grint has also served in senior management roles at Cerexa, Forest Laboratories, Kalypsys, Pfizer, IDEC Pharmaceuticals, and Schering-Plough Corporation.

“Cardea has created an entirely new way for scientists from any industry to access biology. The Innovation Council will leverage our members’ diverse technology and industry backgrounds from life sciences, bioinformatics, agriculture, electronics, diagnostics as well as food and environmental safety to identify innovation partners and new solutions to industry bottlenecks and problems,” said Dr. Grint.

Cardea’s Innovation Council is actively engaged in supporting the company’s mission to connect the domain of biology to more traditional technology and computer infrastructures, enabling greater access to bio-data in numerous applications; now referred to as the “Internet of Biology”.

Jonathan Seaton has joined Cardea as SVP for Corporate & Business Development where Mr. Seaton’s access to peers in the global life science world will be the starting point for more product co-development partnerships. Cardea’s biology-based transistor infrastructure will offer partner’s the tech modules to create a new generation of life science applications and devices branded and sold under the partner’s brand.

Prior to joining Cardea, Mr. Seaton held the position of SVP, Corporate & Business Development at Illumina, and prior to that he was VP, Strategy and Business Development at BD Life Sciences and Vice Director, Global Business Development at Roche Diagnostics.

“Cardea is pioneering a new method of life science detection and expanding the scope of possible insights. The Cardean infrastructure is not just generating data-sets, but also the data-streams of interactive signals from systems biology. It even allows for multi-omics analysis due to the biocompatible graphene transistors, which do not require the amplification and optics that often are the bottlenecks in life sciences,” says Mr. Seaton.

Rob Lozuk has been assisting Cardea throughout most of 2019 as an executive business consultant. Rob was initially responsible for building the Cardea Innovation Partnership Program and is now transitioning into a broader role as Cardea’s SVP of Commercial Operations, a role he also held previously at Sequenom, where he was responsible for sales, marketing, commercial and laboratory operations.

“Through our Innovation Partnership Program, Cardea is working with a select group of prestigious partners to create a new generation of “Internet of Biology” enabled products. Cardea’s proprietary, biology-gated transistor infrastructure will have an enormous impact on the world as partners will now be able to market new “biology is technology” applications inside instruments and/or portable devices only once imagined,” says Mr. Lozuk.

“It’s rare to have a detection breakthrough that significantly expands the number and type of applications within and outside of the traditional life science markets. Cardea’s technology leverages all of the learnings and methods of scaling from the well-established semiconductor industry while opening a whole new playing field in-between biology and electronics that has the capability of bringing valuable insights to every human being on the planet,” continues Mr. Lozuk.

About Cardea Bio

Cardea Bio is developing a new generation of (bio)technology infrastructure based on proprietary biology-gated transistors (“Cardean transistors”). Cardean transistors leverage biocompatible graphene instead of silicon and replace optical signal observations with direct electrical molecular signal analysis. Until now, life science data was comprised of static snapshot datasets. With Cardean transistors, the company and its Innovation Partners can generate streaming multi-omics data to measure real-time biological signals. Cardea is now manufacturing chips at scale and partners have started to significantly expand the amount, type and quality of biological data they capture by building products that Conduct Biology™. Cardea is headquartered in San Diego, California.

Dr. Thomas has been working as a periodontist for over 50 years and has been a lifelong resident of the Bridgeport, CT area. He obtained his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from the University of Pennsylvania and completed his Periodontal Residency at Georgetown University. As an experienced periodontist, Dr. Thomas focuses on the areas of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gum related conditions, like gum disease.

Now at Advanced Periodontics and Dental Implant Center of Connecticut, Dr. Thomas will be adding his skills to the team’s already extensive care offered for periodontal concerns. One of the leading services offered is treatment for gum disease. This common condition affects the hard and soft tissues of the mouth, including the gums, teeth and jawbone. When diagnosed early, gum disease can be treated before extensive and permanent harm occurs. However, if left to progress untreated, gum disease can cause serious oral and systemic health concerns. Advanced gum disease can cause jawbone deterioration and tooth loss. Research has even linked it to health concerns like heart disease and diabetes.

Periodontists Drs. Amato, Kang and Thomas provide effective treatment for gum disease through LANAP® laser dentistry. LANAP is an advanced solution that does not require the use of scalpels or sutures. With gentle laser light, infected gum tissue can be removed and healthy tissue can be stimulated for regrowth. Since there is no cutting, most patients find the treatment to be comfortable and sedation is often not required. This also means that treatment is quicker than traditional treatment and areas of gum disease can often be treated in just one appointment.

Existing patients of Dr. Thomas from Bridgeport, CT are welcome to join him at his new Monroe, CT location. New London, CT Periodontist, Dr. Gregory Toback, Becomes the First to Use the Keystone Genesis Guided Surgery Kit

Gisela Landreville and Philip Segal of Keystone Dental and Dr. Gregory Toback, Periodontist in New London, CT

Gisela Landreville, Philip Segal, and Dr. Gregory Toback Use the Keystone Genesis Guided Surgery Kit for the First Time

Dr. Toback is working directly with the Keystone engineer to assure this kit is of optimal design for use by doctors worldwide.

Highly esteemed periodontist, Dr. Gregory Toback of Shoreline Periodontics, becomes the first doctor to use the Keystone Genesis Guided Surgery Kit to predictably replace teeth with dental implants in New London, CT. The kit includes all lengths and diameters of straight and tapered Genesis dental implants, allowing periodontists and dental implant surgeons to restore one, several, or all missing teeth with the utmost precision and accuracy.

Keystone Dental is one of the leading manufacturers of dental implant systems and planning software for dental professionals. Their newest Genesis Guided Surgery Kit uses innovative design and advanced technology to aid in aesthetic-driven treatment planning for predictable, long-term results. The kit provides all necessary dental implant diameters, lengths, and shapes for the most accurate replacement of a missing tooth. The unique design of each Genesis implant ensures significantly greater surgical success (with expert planning and treatment) for patients with any number of missing teeth and for immediate placement after extraction. Dr. Toback is working directly with the Keystone engineer to assure this kit is of optimal design for use by doctors worldwide.

Dr. Toback and his associate, Dr. Marianne Urbanski, offer guided dental implant placement for all dental implant surgeries, including their teeth-in-a-day dental implant protocol for single and full arch missing teeth. Using 3D CBCT scans and digital software, Drs. Toback and Urbanski can virtually plan surgery and build restorations, then create fully customized surgical guides prior to surgery. Following an advanced protocol, the periodontists can extract a tooth or teeth, surgically place dental implants using the guide, and attach a fixed restoration all in a single procedure.

“Teeth-in-a-day is possible because of our technology and 3D imaging,” said Dr. Toback. “We can plan the entire case ahead of time and build the teeth beforehand. This is a great benefit for patients because they can leave our office with fixed teeth and avoid removable temporaries during healing.”

Combined, periodontists, Drs. Toback and Urbanski, have decades of experience in dental implant treatment. Using advanced technology and systems like the Keystone Genesis kit, the team provides predictable care with beautiful and functional long-term results.

Nipomo family Dentist Releases The Report, ‘What To Look For In A Family Dentist’

family dentist Nipomo

In addition to a broad range of skills and knowledge traits such as trustworthiness, professionalism, and flexibility are high on the list of desirable traits.

The term “family dentist” actually refers to a dental office that serves all ages of patients, from infants to senior citizens. This being the case Dr. Douglas Ng, at the offices of Nipomo Family Dentist has recently released a report to help individuals and families know what to look for when deciding on the best dentist for their needs.

Family dentistry and general dentistry are sometimes interchangeable, but some dentists practice general dentistry but specialize in a specific group, such as adults, or the special dentistry needs of senior citizens or children. Specializing in children is known as pediatric dentistry.

Other types of dentistry include:

  • Orthodontists specialize in teeth and jaw alignment, using braces, retainers, clear aligners, and other devices.
  • Periodontists help treat and repair diseases and problems of the gums that are damaged by progressive gum disease.
  • Endodontists deal specifically with issues troubling the nerve of a tooth.
  • Oral pathologists and oral surgeons specialize in the treatment of oral diseases of the teeth and jaw. They are trained to perform surgery and may work closely with ear, nose, and throat specialists (ENTs).
  • Prosthodontists repair teeth and jawbones. They provide cosmetic dentistry or treatments to improve the appearance of teeth, such as teeth whitening and veneers. They also fit people with dentures, crowns and bridges.

A family dentist may include many of these specialties in his or her practice. When a patient is referred to a specialist, the family dentist works closely with the specialist to be sure the patient is receiving the best care. Follow-up care after a special procedure is often the job of the family dentist, so it is important to have a strong professional relationship with the specialist.

In addition to a broad range of skills and knowledge traits such as trustworthiness, professionalism, and flexibility are high on the list of desirable traits.

  • A broad range of services means special oral health needs get prompt attention rather than having to wait to fit into a specialist’s schedule. Even if a condition must be referred, a family dentist with a broad range of services is able to perform preparatory and follow-up procedures that are critical to a speedy recovery and ongoing oral health.
  • Professionalism is important for both the dentist and the staff. Is the staff pleasant and understanding? Is the office a comfortable place to wait for the appointment to start? Are there calm activities available for children? Does the appointment start on time? Are your questions about your oral health, insurance coverage and cost answered satisfactorily? Are the dentist’s credentials prominently displayed?
  • Is the dentist knowledgeable about the latest dental procedures, oral health issues and state-of-the-art equipment? If your dentist doesn’t perform the procedure in question can he or she explain it to you to your satisfaction? What kinds of ongoing training do the dentist and staff acquire? Do the dentist and staff have a full understanding of how to use the equipment in the office?
  • Do you trust your dentist and the staff? Do your children trust them? Do the dentist and staff hear you and take the time to discuss your concerns and dental care with you? Do they take the necessary time to calm and relax you or your child? Do you feel your dentist is as committed to your family’s lifetime dental health as you are?
  • Things happen and sometimes appointments need to change or you are late through no fault of your own. How easy is it to reschedule and appointment? Does the staff make a good effort to work with your schedule? How quickly can you get an appointment in an emergency? Is there an emergency, 24-hour number you can call?
