Three States Select Cambria Solutions to Guide Development of Critical Medicaid Management and Information Systems

Cambria Solutions, a national information technology and management consulting firm that helps governments deliver results better, faster and with greater consistency, has been selected by Louisiana and Mississippi, along with assistance provided to Florida, in the planning and oversight for significantly upgrading each of these states’ Medicaid Management Information Systems (MMIS). These new modular-based systems will support states in cost reduction, enhance efficiencies through improved coordination, and provide better health outcomes for patients.

In addition to its Medicaid experience, Cambria brings innovations in digital transformation initiatives for state governments through human-centered design and agile development methodologies.

“The consumerization of IT means that patients, beneficiaries and other users expect their interaction with government healthcare systems to be friendly, engaging and accessible,” said Suzanne Vitale, president at Cambria Solutions. “Cambria combines efficient project management, the latest thinking in user experience design, and lean-agile project and portfolio management skills. Our collaborative approach helps government agencies rethink how best to deliver services to constituents and enables them to modernize and future-proof their Medicaid systems.”

For Mississippi and Louisiana, Cambria will oversee the design and implementation of a replacement for each state’s current MMIS system and the subsequent transition to modularity. Modularity is breaking up traditional, large systems into smaller, self-contained modules that lower risk and support innovation. Each state will use modularity to help accelerate the transition to managed care and innovative delivery models.

The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) recently selected Cambria as the Project and Portfolio Management Office (PPMO) to support the MMIS replacement and enterprise projects across the agency. As part of the PPMO services to be delivered, Cambria is bringing to bear its innovative project management techniques, fluency with the latest technologies, and lean-agile transformation methodologies that will enable achievement of the state’s Medicaid business goals.

“The new wave of MMIS projects demanded a partner with an innovative, different approach,” said Louisiana Department of Health, Medicaid Deputy Director & Chief Technology Officer Mitzi Hochheiser. “Cambria was the easy choice. Cambria brings deep experience in Medicaid across six states and takes an innovative approach to transformation that will help us improve delivery across the agency.”

Last year, the Mississippi Division of Medicaid (DOM) selected Cambria to set up and manage the Project Management Office (PMO) for the MMIS Replacement Project (MRP), but recently expanded the scope of the contract so that Cambria could assist with enterprise-wide implementation of departmental transformational goals as an Enterprise Project Management Office (ePMO). The goal is to improve operational efficiency, instill project management principles across the agency, and align the dozens of projects to the agency’s vision.

“Trust is one of the most important elements for success in an MMIS implementation,” said Mississippi Division of Medicaid Deputy Administrator Rita Rutland. “We’ve been partnering with Cambria for six years now on a variety of projects, so we trust Cambria as their depth of Medicaid and consulting experience has been invaluable, but more so their personal approach in helping us think through our plans and implement the right solutions that work for Mississippi.”

In 2017, the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) selected the North Highland Company, with Cambria as a subcontractor, as a Strategy Enterprise Advisory Services (SEAS) vendor to support similar objectives. This marks three Medicaid agencies in three years to select Cambria for these services.

The Cambria blueprint for MMIS modernization

Modularity in MMIS replacement projects is new to many states, and Cambria is one of a handful of IT service providers with proven capabilities to provide support and implement the latest development methodologies (such as Lean, Agile, and DevOps) to smooth the path to a modular architecture. Cambria implements comprehensive project-management services to support agencies as they strive to better serve individuals currently enrolled in the states’ Medicaid programs as well as future enrollees.

Dr. Jeffrey Schmidt and Denver Business Leaders Host Underpriviledged Children at 29th Annual “Christmas for Kids” Event

News Image

Dr. Schmidt at the 2019 Christmas for Kids event.

With 140 children and 175 members participating, the 2019 Christmas for Kids event was the organization’s most successful yet, raising more than $200,000.

One-hundred and forty Denver children attended Christmas for Kids, an event organized by Denver Active 20 – 30 Children’s Foundation. Organization members—local business owners dedicated to philanthropy and service—raised money to provide $100 Target gift cards to each child so they could shop for their families. Typically, none of these children can afford to buy gifts for parents, grandparents, or siblings.

Denver Active 20 -30 members accompanied children on the early morning shopping spree which took place from 6:00 to 8:00 a.m., before store doors opened. Members are professionals between 20 and 39, including Dr. Jeffrey Schmidt of Schmidt Facial Plastic Surgery.

With 140 children and 175 members participating, the 2019 Christmas for Kids event was the organization’s most successful yet, raising more than $200,000.

The Christmas for Kids’ approach of providing gift cards helps children not only experience the joy of giving but learn important life skills. They must prioritize others, create a shopping list and plan purchases to make the most of their $100. With gifts purchased, the children and Denver Active 20 – 30 members went to the parking lot where Santa arrived by bright yellow helicopter and distributed gifts to the children.

Christmas for Kids is funded by members who pledge to donate and find others to sponsor them. For the past seven years, Dr. Schmidt has taken the lead in fundraising for this event. He donates a portion of his practice’s proceeds annually to the worthy cause yearly.

“Christmas for Kids is the best event of the year,” explains Cam Richards, Denver Active 20-30 president. “The pride and joy that these underserved children experience as they shop for their family members keep us focused on the great need that exists and the purpose of our work.”

About Denver Active 20 – 30 Children’s Foundation

Formed in 1987 with the aim of serving disadvantaged children, Denver Active 20 – 30 Children’s Foundation cultivates a local pool of young professionals dedicated to philanthropy and service. In addition to Chrismas for Kids, yearly events include NAIOP Fight Night (boxing), the Mile High Face-Off (a hockey event), Denver Barn Party (country music), Leaders Fore Kids Classic (golf), and the Denver Polo Classic, all top-tier events. In the past 32 years, Denver Active 20 – 30 has raised more than $11 million dollars. Its commitment to above-board operation and governance earned it a GuideStar Gold Seal of Transparency, an honor bestowed to less than one percent of all charities. He not only supports Denver charities with his time and money, he offers reduced prices to active and retired military and other public servants. Spry Therapeutics Announces Soft-Surface Filter Technology to Combat Healthcare Acquired Infections and Superbugs

We strongly believe that patients should have the expectation that their head rests on a pillow with a core that has not been contaminated by a previous patient.

Spry Therapeutics, a health and wellness technology company, today announced its plan to reduce the spread of healthcare acquired infections (HAIs) among patients and caregivers. Through its 2020 Pure campaign, Spry hopes to address the HAI epidemic, which claims 99,000 lives in the US annually – more than breast and prostate cancer combined – with its patented filtered technology, Pneumapure.

Hospitals currently do everything within their power to clean hard surfaces and prevent cross-contamination among patients and caregivers, by using autoclaves, sanitizing wipes, UV sterilization, and more. Unfortunately, current sterilization methods are only topical and do nothing to address the interior of soft surfaces, such as pillows and mattresses, on which patients spend most of their time.

Currently, all pillows on the market are susceptible to contamination by their very design; their stitched seams enable countless pathogens to enter and exit their interiors with each new patient. Similarly, ECRI Institute reports that supposedly “clean” mattresses can contain blood and other bodily fluids, which put patients at risk for cross-contamination. As a result, these soft surfaces have become reservoirs of deadly organisms like MRSA, C. diff, E. coli, Candida auris, and more – commonly known as “superbugs.”

Spry Therapeutics is committed to helping healthcare facilities eliminate soft surfaces as a vector for contamination by providing the world’s first and only soft-surface filter technology: Pneumapure. The company’s patented filter technology blocks even the smallest “superbugs” – down to .02 micron – from entering or exiting any soft surface to which it’s applied, helping to prevent the transmission of deadly diseases among patients and caregivers. Pneumapure also reduces costs associated with HAIs from environmental impact to disposal costs, annual purchase expenditures and more.

“We are excited about the prospect of finally being able to prevent infections that are killing hundreds of thousands of people a year by offering an effective and affordable technology,” said Bill Purdy, Co-Founder and CEO of Spry Therapeutics. “We strongly believe that patients should have the expectation that their head rests on a pillow with a core that has not been contaminated by a previous patient. We also believe that suppliers and manufacturers of these pillows have an obligation to meet that expectation, whenever possible.”

Spry Therapeutics plans to introduce its Pneumapure solution to leading healthcare facilities in the US – and major suppliers to these facilities – throughout the year 2020.

U.S. News Ranks EKU Online Degrees Among Top 50 Best for Vets and Nurses

Logo with text. For the ninth consecutive year, EKU's online degree programs are ranked among the best by U.S. News and World Report.

For the ninth consecutive year, EKU’s online degree programs are ranked among the best by U.S. News and World Report.

We have grown dramatically since our first online class was taught in 2006, but the quality of our courses and the commitment of our faculty continues to set the standard.”

U.S. News & World Report has once again ranked Eastern Kentucky University’s online degree programs among the best in the nation. EKU is 39th on the list of Best Online Programs for Veterans. The school also made the top 50 list of Best Online Programs in Nursing for the fifth consecutive year, performing better than any other Kentucky school. EKU’s online bachelor’s programs and graduate degrees in education moved up in the rankings, landing in the top 100.

“We are incredibly proud of our online programs that excel in these high-profile rankings year after year,” said Tim Matthews, executive director of the Office of eCampus Learning. “We have grown dramatically since our first online class was taught in 2006, but the quality of our courses and the commitment of our faculty continues to set the standard.”

EKU is repeatedly recognized as a leader among military friendly schools, and online programs are no exception. The university participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program, which provides funding for tuition expenses that are not covered by the Post-9/11 GI Bill. Active duty service members qualify for reduced tuition. Students and families also benefit from flexible admission and withdrawal policies while on deployment.

Online degrees were assessed using four weighted categories: engagement; services and technology; faculty credentials and training; and expert opinion. Graduate programs were also scored on student excellence, a category that included undergraduate GPAs and acceptance rate.

Student engagement, which refers to interaction between online students and their instructors, plays a key role in student success. Class size, graduation rate, retention rate and time to degree completion were also measured in this category.

In the services and technologies category, the best performing schools reported lower levels of student debt, as well as higher instances of advanced learning technologies and support services such as academic advising, tutoring and career placement assistance.

Faculty and administrators are an important part of the ranking algorithm. Schools rose in the rankings based on the number of faculty with terminal degrees in their disciplines and resources dedicated to preparing instructors to teach in the online environment. U.S. News and World Report also solicited deans and top officials to provide their expert opinions of institutions offering similar programs by completing a peer assessment survey.

Consistently recognized as having some of the nation’s best online degree programs, EKU strives to make quality education accessible to everyone. EKU is an accredited, brick-and-mortar institution that has prepared students for success for more than a century. Today, more than 40 undergraduate and graduate degree options are available in a variety of fields. To learn more about EKU Online programs, go to go.eku.edu/usnews20.

Founded in 2014, Lucent’s focus has been to provide data-driven solutions and cost containment programs for employers. With offices across the country, Lucent serves employers and members nationwide, offering self-funded health plans that reduce costs while improving the member experience.

Lucent Health’s goal in acquiring Cypress Benefit Administrators in 2017 was to expand its mission and vision of managing cost control strategies, proactively using health plan data to help employers predict trends, minimizing risk and making better, more informed decisions. Lucent has 400 employees to serve more than 800 clients and 250,000 members in a variety of industries and group sizes.

“Since the addition of Cypress Benefit Administrators, Lucent has experienced tremendous growth of our platform and capabilities as a data-driven, self-funding solution for employers. Working with Tom Doney and Marsha Phillips, the founders of Cypress, has been key in our success,” said Brett Rodewald, Lucent Health’s president and CEO.

Cypress opened its doors in 2000 with a focus on forward-thinking cost containment solutions and experienced great success with its efforts. The TPA consistently kept plan cost increases below the national trend, coming in at less than 1% the last two years. Cypress’s average increase from 2012 to 2018 was just 1.24% compared to 6.27% for plans nationally.
