South Broward Hospital District (FL) Board of Commissioners Adopts Lowest Millage Rate for 13th Consecutive Year

The 7.23% reduction from last year’s previous low comes despite market challenges and an evolving workforce dynamic. Because of Memorial Healthcare System’s solid fiscal standing, commissioners backed the position in order to benefit Broward County residents.

HOLLYWOOD, Fla., Oct. 13, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Memorial Healthcare System has broken a district record once again with the South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners voting to reduce its millage rate to 0.0937. Even amid market challenges and an evolving dynamic in the workforce, this is a notable reduction of 7.23 percent from last year. Because of Memorial’s solid fiscal standing, commissioners backed the position which will benefit Broward County residents.

What Does a Lower Millage Rate Mean?

The 0.0937 millage rate represents a 7.23 percent decrease from last year’s rate of 0.1010. The resulting gross tax revenues are estimated to reach $7.83 million. After accounting for early payment discounts and a certain percentage of uncollectible taxes, the anticipated tax payments this year of $7.61 million will provide Memorial enough revenue to cover its governmental obligations, which include paying Broward County’s Medicaid Match program and community redevelopment agencies in several municipalities in south Broward County, as well as tax collector commissions and property appraiser fees.

With no net tax revenue to fund uncompensated care, the district will tap operating income to account for all uncompensated care costs across the entire Memorial Healthcare System, including its six hospitals and 11 Memorial Primary Care clinics. In fiscal year 2024 uncompensated care is expected to exceed $1.13 billion.

As a proven industry leader, Memorial’s portfolio includes comprehensive services related to cardiac and stroke care, Level 1 trauma center, maternity-fetal medicine, and heart, kidney and pancreas transplants to name a few. Memorial is more focused than ever on increased access across South Florida communities. Initiatives such as new Memorial Primary Care center in Northwest Miami-Dade County, Weston, and Plantation; a comprehensive cancer center in Pembroke Pines; and expanded mobile primary care services in various underserved communities, are just a few hallmarks of improved consumer experience and focus.

Memorial also continues to be laser-focused on workforce, safety and quality. Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization that collects and transparently reports on hospital performance, recognized Memorial’s level of quality and safety. The healthcare system also received Modern Healthcare’s Best Places to Work in Healthcare, the coveted Great Place to Work certification, recognizing employers who create an outstanding employee experience. The growing list of consistent accomplishments keeps Memorial among a handful of public hospitals in the nation earning coveted AA, Aa3 financial ratings from Standard and Poor’s and Moody’s.

A Journey Towards Fulfillment and Connection

The event commenced with an exciting Friday afternoon at the El Prado hotel in Palo Alto, CA, featuring two remarkable speakers:

Dick Gould: A legendary figure in college tennis, Dick Gould, shared insights from his book, “Anatomy of a Champion,” inspiring and empowering attendees.

Jeff Salzenstein: Former top 100 world-ranked tennis player, keynote speaker, and performance coach, Jeff Salzenstein, provided valuable insights on reducing stress, navigating mental health challenges in the post-pandemic world, cultivating resilience, and optimizing health as men transition into the “Second Curve” of life.

Following these talks, attendees engaged in intimate group discussions, fostering reflection and open dialogue about personal and professional victories and challenges. The event also allowed for casual interactions, establishing the foundation for an annual tradition.

The weekend continued with a plated dinner full of deep conversation on Friday evening and activities like hiking, pickleball, tailgating, and attending a football game on Saturday. The Second Curve event aimed to positively impact the lives of men as they enter the second phase of their journey, benefiting their families, friends, and organizations.

The importance of human connection cannot be overstated, especially as we age. Harvard University’s study on happiness underscores the significance of close relationships for lifelong happiness and resilience. Unfortunately, a decline in the number of men with close friends over the last 30 years, as reported by the Survey Center on American Life, highlights the growing need for events like the Second Curve.

The inaugural Second Curve event was a resounding success, with participants experiencing instant connection and camaraderie, even with friends they hadn’t seen for 25 years. It addressed a critical issue affecting leaders, employers/employees, teams within organizations, and parents – chronic stress, which has risen significantly in the post-pandemic world, according to the World Health Organization.

The Second Curve event aimed to help men flourish in the second half of their lives, encouraging them to deepen relationships, cultivate spiritual practices, and connect with greater purpose. Arthur Brooks, the New York Times bestselling author, found that by age 65, 50% of people become happier as they age, aligning with the event’s focus on personal growth.

The event posed a crucial question for men embarking on their Second Curve journey: What will the Second Curve look like for each man? This question became a central theme, allowing attendees to engage in meaningful conversations about their future paths.

The weekend was a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to focus on living with more meaning and purpose, tending to personal happiness daily, and accessing one’s zone of excellence. This transformation’s positive ripple effect extends to relationships at work, with friends, with families, and most importantly, with oneself.

Not your average “tailgater, ” the Second Curve event is a platform for personal growth, connection, and transformation. If you are a growth-minded man embarking on a Second Curve journey, reach out to Jeff Salzenstein at [email protected] for more information about upcoming events.

Lawsuit Filed by CaseyGerry Against Hyatt Hotels Corp. After San Diego Toddler Falls From Ninth Floor of Luxury Resort

Hyatt entities were negligent in that they failed to use reasonable care to keep the Hyatt Ziva Puerto Vallarta in a safe condition, which would have prevented Nico’s tragic death, the complaint alleges.

According to the complaint (Case number: ’23CV1838 BAS AHG), “On the morning of October 11, 2021, James Carter and his almost two-year-old son Nico walked from their hotel room to the elevator bay area. James watched as Nico walked up to what appeared to be a balcony area with safety glass panels near the elevators. Then suddenly, Nico vanished. James quickly realized to his horror that the area was not protected by safety glass panels. On that day, at that moment, Nico fell nine stories to his death.”

The complaint further alleges the “defendant claimed it is the perfect spot for ‘family fun,’ and that the Hyatt Ziva puts ‘safety first.’ The Carters believed the defendants’ representations.” Furthermore, the complaint alleges, “the Hyatt Ziva website reassured them stating “safety first, well-being always.”

Francavilla added, “Instead, the Carters lost their only child – the most tragic and painful loss a parent can endure. The pain is even more severe when the death is so easily preventable as it was here.”

The child’s parents, Duboshina and Carter, say their goal is to seek justice for their son Nico and prevent future tragedies.

“I remember how happy we were to plan a family trip to such a beautiful and family-oriented resort,” Duboshina said. “Nico was almost two years old, and we had also been planning his birthday celebration for when we returned from our trip. Instead, we had to plan his funeral. They shouldn’t have to make coffins so small, and no parent should have to bury a child. I don’t know how I survived, but I know I buried a part of myself alongside my son.”

In a joint statement, Nico Carter’s parents said “Nico’s death was senseless and completely avoidable. We want justice for our son. We relied upon Hyatt for its safety and want Hyatt to take responsibility for its conduct. We hope that through this lawsuit nothing like this ever happens again at any resort or hotel, and that the hospitality industry feels the gravity of what senseless mistakes and carelessness can cause.”

Pregnantish Announces New “Real Talk” Market Research Report with Feedback from Over 800 Fertility Treatment Patients

Pregnantish, the first global media platform dedicated to helping people navigate their fertility, announces its recently concluded 2023 syndicated study – “Real Talk: Bridging the Gap Between Patients and Providers” – examining pre- and post-pandemic attitudes and behaviors. 821 respondents accessed the 49 question survey and 622 respondents completed it.

NEW YORK, Oct. 12, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Pregnantish, the first global media platform dedicated to helping people navigate their fertility, announces its recently concluded 2023 syndicated study – “Real Talk: Bridging the Gap Between Patients and Providers” – available for purchase now. In addition, the company announces the launch of Pregnantish Insights, a division of pregnantish that engages its audience of fertility-focused consumers, patients and providers in research to reveal insights about their individual fertility experiences and the factors that impact them. Pregnantish Insights is comprised of a team of seasoned market researchers and fertility experts who leverage the company’s deep trusted relationships with today’s fertility treatment patients to provide insights that benefit the entire fertility care spectrum.

“The goal with our research is to help to bridge the gap between patients and providers to help them achieve their shared goal: making a healthy baby.” says pregnantish Founder and relationships author, Andrea Syrtash.

In its Real Talk report announced today, pregnantish earned the trust of over 800 respondents who participated in a nearly 50 question survey. The report delves into the biggest industry disruptors over the past five years, examining pre- and post-pandemic shifts in patient behavior, and how patient-provider relationships were affected. The quantitative study looks at the depth and breadth of issues faced by fertility patients and providers as well as the timing and impact of industry factors, trends, technologies and practices, making its findings current and relevant.

“After our first “Real Talk” syndicated study in 2019, when we heard from over 1000 diverse fertility treatment patients, we really wanted to hear from our audience on the opportunities and challenges they’ve experienced in the last 5 years since the world – and the world of ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) – has changed. We were excited that once again, a large number of people responded to our call and that we heard from so many current fertility treatment patients,” says Syrtash. “We know that this is historically a difficult audience to reach and their participation reflects not only a trust in us, which we very much appreciate, but patients’ desire to get their feedback to providers and to positively improve the fertility experience for future patients.”

The Real Talk 2023 pregnantish study was conducted in late summer of 2023, with 821 respondents accessing the survey and 622 respondents completing it. Key findings from the report include:

  • Patients Wish They’d Started Fertility Assistance Sooner: Over a third (37%) of patients in the pregnantish study who were surveyed noted that their top regret was not starting the fertility assistance process sooner.
  • Fertility Patients Trust Social Media Most: Social media is the #1 trusted primary information source for patients seeking guidance about fertility assistance. Online support groups and forums are trusted 2 times as much as the next highest mentioned information source – more than friends, family, partners, doctors, and government health agencies.
  • Mixed Trust in Artificial Intelligence (AI): Despite the flurry of attention around AI, there is a wariness surrounding its use in labs: 28% of patients surveyed by pregnantish are unclear what AI is or how it can help, indicating that while some patients are excited about the technological innovation, a number of people remain unclear about the use of AI as a tool.

“Today’s fertility patient is excited by all the innovation they see in the fertility industry but is still as concerned about a breakdown in relationships as they were when we first surveyed them in 2019,” notes Syrtash. “This concern has grown as the industry has grown and our goal with this research is to better understand each other as we build families together.”

Pregnantish’s 2023 Real Talk study includes specific data on other key findings, such as:

  • The top four responses to the question of what patients wished they’d done differently all relate to a perception of time and a wish to have started fertility assistance sooner.
  • There is a clear and specific point in time (“the cliff”) in a patient’s journey where their preferences and attitudes shift significantly.
  • How patients view telehealth for consultations and appointments in a post-pandemic Zoom-focused world

The broader scope of the report explores findings in areas including:

  • Patient perceptions of fertility industry + best practices along patient/provider journey
  • Perspectives of trends & insights from fertility industry experts
  • Motivations for switching providers
  • Primary sources of fertility information
  • Obstacles to fertility treatment
  • Financing preferences
  • Pre- / post-pandemic consultation preferences
  • Remote options and telehealth
  • At-home tracking and testing
  • Clinic lab feedback & preferences
  • Patient wishlists
  • Attitudes toward A.I. in the lab
  • Patient attitudes regarding Third Party Reproduction
  • Fertility preservation and more…
