FSA Store® reveals top 10 ways to spend tax-free healthcare funds before December 31 use-it-or-lose-it deadline

The list of qualified expenses for FSAs goes well beyond doctor visits and copays. To spend remaining FSA funds in meaningful ways, start by using the FSA Store’s comprehensive, searchable FSA eligibility list, which includes both eligible product categories, as well as services. For additional product inspiration, consider the following list of top purchases made by FSA Store shoppers so far in 2023.

10. Elvie Double Electric Breast Pump. The Elvie Double Electric Breast Pump makes it possible to pump at home, at work, or on the go. Small and lightweight, the Elvie Pump is worn inside a standard nursing bra and with technology to eliminate noise.

Deadline Reminders. In addition to understanding how FSA funds can be used, consumers should understand and remember these deadline facts in the coming weeks:

  • The December 31 use-it-or-lose-it deadline is the date by which, for many account holders, the FSA balance must be spent or remaining funds are lost. This is called a forfeiture.
  • While December 31 is the most common spending deadline for FSAs, this deadline can vary based on an organization’s plan year. Account holders should log in to their FSA portal, if available, to verify their deadline, or check with their employer or FSA administrator.
  • An employer may offer an FSA deadline extension, such as a partial rollover of unused funds, a grace period (2.5 months after your plan year end date; typically March 15), and/or a run-out period. These extensions are completely optional. Check on your FSA portal or with your employer, benefits team, or FSA administrator to confirm availability.
  • To help account holders avoid potential FSA forfeitures, FSA Store offers free FSA Deadline Alerts that remind consumers when their personal deadline is approaching so they can avoid a forfeiture.

For additional information, deadline support, and money-saving deals, visit the FSA Store.

NFL Expands Smart Heart Sports Coalition

Sport Safety international becomes one of the latest medical and advocacy groups to have signed on to the coalition. New members represent parties along the chain of survival essential to recognizing and treating sudden cardiac arrest. Organizations joining the coalition include: Association of Black Cardiologists (ABC); The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM); John Taylor Babbit Foundation; Citizen CPR Foundation (CCPRF); National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT); National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS); the Pediatric and Congenital Electrophysiology Society (PACES); Starting Hearts; the Max Harry Weil Institute for Critical Care Research and Innovation (Weil Institute) at the University of Michigan; and Who We Play For.

Additional members already part of the group include: American College of Cardiology, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, Heart Rhythm Society, Make Them Know Your Name, National Council of Youth Sports, National Football League Physicians Society, Parent Heart Watch, Simon’s Heart, Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation, and T.J. Carrie Foundation.

Since founding the coalition in March and sending letters to governors across the country, a number of states have taken action to enact one or more of the evidence-based policies proven to prevent death from Sudden Cardiac Arrest. These states include New Mexico, Kentucky, and Indiana. In addition, the coalition has engaged with policymakers in more states, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, where legislatures are still in session, and have more time to adopt these policies before the next school year and athletic calendar begins. According to the Korey Stringer Institute, only seven states have all three best-practice policies in place; nine states have none. The coalition is committed to continuing to work and collaborate with health advocates, school officials, and lawmakers to ensure all 50 states have the vital safeguards needed to prevent fatal injuries and save the lives of high school athletes.

Every year, millions of athletes sustain sports injuries. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an average annual estimate of 8.6 million sports- and recreation-related injury episodes was reported, with an age-adjusted rate of 34.1 per 1,000 population. By joining the coalition, Sport Safety International looks to continue its rewrite the narrative on concussions, heat illness, sudden death, emergency planning, and other sports injuries by educating parents, coaches, and youth athletes.

“Proper education may lead in some cases, to prevention, early recognition, proper management, shorter recovery periods and may even safe a life.” said Dr. Robb Rehberg, the founder of Sport Safety International. “As one of the leading resources in sport safety education, it was important to SSI to provide access to this comprehensive concussion online learning opportunity throughout the country. What better way to do it than to do it with the NFL and the members of this coalition, who share the same goals and objectives as our company.”

Sports Safety International (SSI), strives to promote injury prevention and safe participation in physical activity and sports by providing the highest quality educational programming to athletes, parents, coaches and healthcare professionals. Founded by leaders in the industry, SSI’s management team collectively holds over 100 years of clinical experience in athletic training, sport safety and sports medicine. Our mission is to reduce sport injury worldwide through accessible education.

Michael Prybicien, ATC, CEC, PES, President, Sport Safety International

“Sport Safety International is proud to support and promote the NFL’s advocacy campaign for the health and safety of our nation’s youth. Furthermore, we are honored to join a group of such like-minded organizations who are committed to the health and wellbeing of student athletes across the nation using evidence-based measures. It is our belief that through education about concussions, heat illness, sudden death, emergency planning, and other sports injuries by educating parents, coaches, and youth athletes you can make safer participation is sport a reality.”

NEDHSA, Pelican State Credit Union ink MOU for financial literacy partnership

“We are adding financial literacy because it is also a negative social determinant of health,” Dr. Sizer said. “Of the thousands of regional patients we see across our programmatic service areas, many struggle with financial issues.”

Dr. Sizer also explained that NEDHSA’s “new Money is Health initiative is specifically designed to help our patients understand the connection between properly managing finances and health outcomes.”

“Our initiative is also designed to help our patients gain control over their finances, feel empowered, and further learn how to make informed decisions that will ultimately lead to improved health outcomes,” Dr. Sizer said.

NEDHSA and Pelican State Credit Union agree to support the following activities within the scope of the MOU. They will ensure the public knows the agency’s services, financial literacy, and other resources for families, children, and other vulnerable populations in Northeast Louisiana.

According to a survey by Bankrate, more Americans are worried about money hurting their mental health. The survey revealed that 52 percent of respondents listed money as significantly affecting their mental health. The latest finding compares with 42 percent of U.S. adults who said money was their top concern last year. Mental health distress can manifest in many ways. For the Bankrate survey, that definition included feelings of anxiety, stress, worried thoughts, difficulty sleeping, and depression.

NEDHSA and Pelican State Credit Union will link shared populations of partnered agencies and other initiatives by providing and sharing informational resources, collaborating, and ultimately acting as a referral point for individuals needing financial health help and/or Integrated Care help.

Jessica Sharon, Pelican State Credit Union’s Assistant Vice-President of Financial Outreach, said they are “thrilled to work with the Northeast Delta Human Services Authority by offering financial education as well as safe and fairly priced financial products and services.”

“Our long history serving the Louisiana Department of Health and their agencies has positioned us to serve their employees and clients well,” Sharon said. “We’ll be sharing our national award-winning Financial Outreach Programs and one-on-one credit counseling with the Northeast Delta family.”

Pelican State Credit Union’s Financial Outreach Program features services such as Financial Wellness Workshops, Informational Tables, participating in Health and Wellness Fairs, and Team Training. Pelican State Credit Union is located at 2880 Louisville Ave #1, Monroe, LA 71201.
