Rise Against Hunger Celebrates 25th Anniversary in the Work to End Global Hunger

Real impact toward ending hunger has always been at the heart of Rise Against Hunger’s work. Over the past 25 years, the organization expanded geographically to impact more communities around the world. Rise Against Hunger currently works with in-country partners in 29 countries and has seven international offices in the United States, Italy, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and South Africa.

Rise Against Hunger also developed its theory of change — called its Pathways to End Hunger — in 2017 to strengthen the organization’s strategic approach of providing immediate nourishment for people facing hunger and implementing community-led projects that support long-term food security. Since the pathways — Nourishing Lives, Empowering Communities, Responding to Emergencies and Growing the Movement — were developed, the organization has served more than 16.8 million people. Also, communities supported by Rise Against Hunger’s sustainable agriculture projects have harvested over 23,000 metric tons, equivalent to more than 51 million pounds, of food.

Rick Kearney, appointed Rise Against Hunger’s CEO in March 2023, has been with the organization for 16 years. “I started with the organization in 2007, which has enabled me to see and be a part of the organization’s impact for a lot of its history,” said Kearney. “In that time, we have never wavered in our mission to end hunger. With as many as 783 million people facing hunger globally, the work to end hunger is not over. We remain committed to this work, looking forward to the day when a world without hunger is a reality.”

In addition to serving communities affected by hunger around the world, volunteers have also played a key role in Rise Against Hunger’s 25 years of impact. The organization recognizes that hunger will not end without awareness and action, so Rise Against Hunger’s Growing the Movement pathway focuses on driving volunteerism and engagement. Rise Against Hunger Experience meal packaging events, just one of the organization’s volunteer opportunities, have engaged 4.8 million volunteers in the packaging of 600 million meals since the packaging program’s launch in 2005.

Rise Against Hunger will host a three-day celebration event November 17-19 in Raleigh, North Carolina, to recognize 25 years of impact, acknowledge the pivotal role of volunteers in Rise Against Hunger’s work and continue the organization’s global impact. The community event will include a 250,000-meal packaging experience, a staple Rise Against Hunger volunteer offering, at Rise Against Hunger’s flagship warehouse location as well as music, food, speakers and family-friendly games at the nearby Compass Rose Brewery. Volunteers can register in advance for the event to celebrate 25 years of impact with Rise Against Hunger.

Torch Research Demonstrates Coaching’s Impact Spreads Beyond the Individual to Teams and Organizations

Specifically, the research found:

  • When managers change as a result of coaching, direct reports change, too.
  • 9 in 10 employees report developing new skills as a result of their manager being coached.
  • 51% of respondents shared that their manager has helped encourage them to learn continuously (for ex: by encouraging a growth mindset).
  • 67% of respondents agreed they’re more likely to seek out opportunities to develop new skills.
  • More time spent in coaching drives an even stronger ripple effect.
  • The longer that a manager spent in coaching, the stronger the ripple effect was on their direct reports.
  • Compared to managers who had shorter coaching engagements, managers who were coached for seven months or more on average had a stronger impact on direct reports’ work satisfaction, organizational commitment, positive attitude at work, and sense of psychological safety.
  • The coaching ripple effect can impact organization-level metrics.
  • Retention, promotion, and performance of direct reports are the measures most likely to be positively influenced by the ripple effect of coaching.

The analysis also explores how the ripple effect may work. It suggests that when managers adopt more positive attitudes as a result of coaching, those emotions can spread to other workers through emotional contagion (a theory that describes how our emotions inspire similar emotions in other people).

Study respondents also reported improved managerial communication as a result of coaching. Better communication can motivate employees by making them feel seen and heard. Overall, when managers become better leaders, they inspire changes in the workers around them as those workers feel more valued and recognized.

This study builds on other research which has found that culture is key to unlocking the positive benefits of coaching. When senior leaders build a supportive culture that reward positive leadership behaviors learned in coaching—such as active listening, asking questions, promoting inclusivity, and giving actionable, empathetic feedback—individuals are more likely to model those behaviors.

Cameron Yarbrough, Torch’s CEO, said:

“Behavior change starts from within. But when we change, we signal to others around us to do the same. The ripple effect is the process by which we not only change ourselves, but whole teams and eventually organizations. While coaching is an investment in an individual’s progress, it also yields big dividends for others around them. That said, managers won’t necessarily try to become better at listening or delivering feedback if those behaviors aren’t rewarded or valued organizationally. One powerful way to amplify the ripple effect is by creating a coaching culture inside your organization.”

The full copy of Torch’s Coaching Ripple Effect Research is available here.

The Coaching Ripple Effect Research Methodology

This study used quantitative and qualitative data from 85 U.S. workers. The research was conducted online across 22 + industries and 2,500 + companies, with sizes ranging from 2 to 10,000 employees. In terms of demographics, all participants lived in the United States, 63% identified as white, 23% as Black or African American and 13% as Asian American. In terms of job roles, 46% were individual or senior contributors, i.e., professionals who contribute to a team or organization but do not manage others, 26% were managers or senior managers, and 27% were directors or had a role higher than Director level.

The survey questions and survey platform were developed in collaboration with the global research company Censuswide.

The core research question for this study was: When key people in an organization begin to behave differently as a result of coaching, what changes, if any, do their direct reports experience?

DSS Awarded Option Period 1 of VistA Integration Revenue and Reporting (VIRR) Contract from the VA

The VIRR suite of products is an application composed of four modules that provide Inpatient and Outpatient Coding, Billing, Revenue Utilization Review, Non-Medical Care Collections Fund, VERA (Veterans Equitable Resource Allocation) and Compliance workload, productivity, and management auditing tools.

VIRR helps to identify potential deficiencies and offer electronic workflow processes ensuring that all required billable data is identified, collected, and passed to the necessary programs for coding, utilization review and billing. VIRR is also a very powerful auditing tool used by VA Compliance, VERA Coordinators and Office of General Council.

Option years are a common feature of service contracts with the federal government to provide base period of performance. The DSS VIRR team will continue to deliver this VA customized solution for coding, revenue, and reporting products deployed nationally. The team will continue to streamline processes, as well as integrate partner components to provide timely content for comprehensive and compliant coding and billing.

The VA revenue cycle has unique considerations and VIRR has been customized to meet these needs. Unlike other commercial off-the-shelf revenue products, VIRR integrates encoders with the latest code updates from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the American Medical Association to provide dynamic coding and billing edits customized for VA. VIRR also provides end-users the ability to communicate between departments that is recorded at the encounter level as well as the ability to track inpatient and outpatient encounters throughout the lifecycle from visit/admission to billing.

DSS completed the deployment of the web-based version of VIRR that is being used nationally by the VA Office of Information and Technology (OIT). The web-based version will provide an opportunity to refine the VA revenue process and improve measures on KPI’s.

MedReview Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Michael Menen, to Present “A Historical Perspective of the Most Common DRG” at NHCAA Event

Dr. Menen offers effective strategies for rectifying coding issues around sepsis and maintaining accurate billing. He will use a compelling case study to illustrate the misuse and upcoding of sepsis DRGs and demonstrate how clinical validation and claims review can ensure compliance and safeguard against coding irregularities.

“Sepsis is a severe, but not completely understood, medical condition, and a frequently coded, very high-cost DRG,” said Dr. Menen. “These facts make sepsis a prime target for upcoding, and often it takes a clinical validation process and a close look at the medical record to verify whether a sepsis DRG is justified–a process that potentially results in substantial savings for the payor.”

As CMO at MedReview, Dr. Menen provides clinical direction on behalf of the organization. In addition to developing innovative programs and strategic partnerships, he is ultimately responsible for ensuring programs are compliant, clinically accurate, and support both patients and clients.

MedReview is a proud sponsor of the NHCAA. In addition to Dr. Menen presenting at the conference, MedReview representatives will be at Booth #301 to answer questions and host a tequila pairing during the event. Learn more here.
