Ideal Option and Albany Helping Hands Partner to Offer Addiction Treatment at Shared Facility

An Ideal Option clinical team will be seeing patients one day a week at Albany Helping Hands homeless shelter, providing treatment for substance use disorder.

ALBANY, Ore. , Nov. 15, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Ideal Option is a national leader in evidence-based outpatient treatment for addiction to opioids, stimulants, alcohol and polysubstance, and specializes in difficult to treat substances like fentanyl and xylazine. The new clinic can be found at 619 9th Ave SE, co-located with Albany Helping Hands, a non-profit faith-based organization for people experiencing homelessness.

Dominating headlines and infiltrating the illicit drug supply, fentanyl has caused overdose deaths and drug-related crime to increase exponentially across Oregon in recent years. According to the Oregon Health Authority, overdose deaths involving fentanyl more than doubled from 226 fatalities in 2020 to 508 in 2021. Just since late August this year, in Linn County, a staggering 80,000 fentanyl pills and 14 pounds of fentanyl powder were seized during three traffic stops carried out by the Oregon State Police.

“Due to the worsening fentanyl crisis in Linn County, there is a desperate need for expanded access to treatment from experienced addiction medicine specialists,” said Josh Lair, director of community development for Ideal Option. “We are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Albany Helping Hands, an established housing resource in the community, to help increase visibility and awareness of our services to those seeking recovery.”

The dangerous practice of mixing fentanyl with other illicit substances such as xylazine to intensify addiction, often unbeknownst to the user, has made polysubstance use disorder the prevailing diagnosis at Ideal Option. Their 2022 Annual Patient Outcomes Report, which aggregates lab testing results from over 1,000 patients in Oregon, reveals that more than 62% of patients tested positive for multiple substances upon enrollment, with 30% testing positive for three or more.

The report does offer hope, however, by underscoring the effectiveness of medication-assisted treatment in combating both isolated and polysubstance use. For patients who remained in Ideal Option’s care throughout 2022, lab testing results show remarkable reductions in substance use:

  • 97% less fentanyl use
  • 88% less methamphetamine use
  • 85% less total opioid use
  • 96% less heroin use
  • 62% less benzodiazepine use

“I was extremely moved when I first heard about the levels of success Ideal Option was achieving with their approach to helping individuals overcome substance use disorder,” said Don Sparks, executive director for Albany Helping Hands. “After about 8 months of planning, Helping Hands is now pleased to host Ideal Option inside our main campus to provide these important and life-changing services for our community.”

Ideal Option has been specializing in addiction medicine using buprenorphine-based medications such as Suboxone® for 11 years and currently operates 91 clinics in 9 states.

The new clinic in Albany is open Wednesdays, 7:30 a.m.5 p.m., located at 619 9th Ave SE, in the same facility as Albany Helping Hands.

Most forms of insurance are accepted, including Medicare and Medicaid, and patients can typically get started on treatment for fentanyl, heroin, alcohol or other substances within 1-3 business days.

Patients can make an appointment by calling 1.877.522.1275 or visiting www.idealoption.com.

New Research Indicates Shelter Cat Fostering Reduces Loneliness in Older Adults Living Alone

“The ill effects of loneliness and social isolation, particularly for older adults, are well-documented, and more strategies are needed to improve health outcomes for this population,” said Dr. Don Scott, MD, MHS, Campus Director of Geriatrics and Palliative Care and Associate Professor of Medicine at August University-University of Georgia Medical Partnership, and co-investigator on this research project. “This project shows that fostering cats can make a measurable difference in the lives of older adults living alone.”

“Our results show that by removing some perceived barriers to pet ownership, including pet deposit fees, pet adoption fees, pet care supplies and veterinary support, we can not only help older adults live healthier, happier lives but we can also spur the fostering and adoption of shelter cats into loving homes,” added Dr. Sanderson.

Study participants were recruited through in-person presentations and flyers posted at The Athens Community Council on Aging (ACCA), regional community organizations, senior living facilities and local and regional publications. Participants completed health surveys before placement with cats and completed follow-up surveys at 1-month, 4-months, and 12-months post-adoption. Participants were given supplies to ensure they could care for the cat for the duration of the study and received monthly check-ins and veterinary care to ensure human and feline participants remained in good health. Assistance to the study participants included cat food, litter and supplies provided by Nestle Purina Pet Care. All cats were spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed and treated for fleas and microchipped before entering the study. Shelter cats were provided from either the Athens Area Humane Society or Campus Cats Rescue.

Findings from this feasibility study reveal that when adjusted for physical health, loneliness scores were observed to significantly decrease at the 4-month mark after the cat fostering began. A similar 4-month improvement that approached statistical significance was observed for mental health. Almost all (95.7%) of study participants decided to adopt their foster cat at the completion of the study. At the 12-month follow-up, loneliness scores were no longer statistically significant. It is theorized that the 12-month follow-up results were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in a substantial proportion of older adults experiencing elevated levels of loneliness and social isolation during that time.

“HABRI is proud to support this first-of-its-kind research which provides promising evidence that a cat fostering program for older adults has the potential to create a lasting human-animal bond that benefits both human and cat health,” said Steven Feldman, President, HABRI. “We’re thankful for the tireless efforts of Dr. Sanderson and her research team who faced significant challenges in completing this important project during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

HealthiPeople Honors California Caregivers During National Caregiver Month With Free Specialized Training for Alzheimer’s Disease & Parkinson’s Disease

In 10 years, more than one-quarter of California’s population will be over 60. Kinary’s training covers essential topics often overlooked when caring for a loved one, such as environmental safety, maintaining good hygiene, creating an emergency plan, or navigating the legalities of caring for someone else. According to a study by the Alzheimer’s Association in 2023, an estimated 720,000 people in California live with Alzheimer’s disease dementia, more than in any other state in the country. And in 2022, the Michael J. Fox Foundation estimated that 116,900 people live with Parkinson’s in California – the highest in the U.S.

“Caregiving isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach,” said Rohit Maheshwari, CEO, and founder of HealthiPeople. “For example, caregiving for someone with a chronic condition like diabetes can present a different set of challenges than caring for someone with a neurodegenerative condition, making it harder to seek help.”

Since the program’s launch, Kinary has designed and developed 24 training modules for caregivers in three languages [English, Spanish, and Mandarin]. Trainings are offered in self-driven, online, and in-person formats. To date, Kinary has helped train over 300 caregivers across California and expects several hundred more before the end of the program next year.

“Our mission is to reduce caregiver burnout and make it possible for caregivers to give great care while living the life they need. Both caregiving and self-care can co-exist,” said Maheshwari. “Caring requires more than love – it takes time, organization, skills, and a lot of energy – and most caregivers fall into the role unprepared.”

All trainees gain free access to Kinary, a mobile assistant [available on the App Store and Google Play] that helps caregivers manage day-to-day caregiving activities and share the load amongst a support network.

In addition to the caregiver training and to complement this skillset development, HealthiPeople is also hosting free training on how to take advantage of its Kinary mobile app technology to stay on top of tasks, manage all medications, plan for appointments, and engage others in care.
