Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation Names Jayden Rodriguez Winner of the 2023 “People Saving People” Award

Amy and Jayden worked out at the same gym and had become friends. The remarkable rescue occurred at her home in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Amy had contacted Jayden, then 22, asking him to stay at her house for a while to make sure she was okay. She went to bed asking him to lock the door when he left.

Jayden sensed something was off and so he waited in the living room. Later he heard “a loud snoring noise” coming from Amy’s bedroom. He rushed there and saw that her face was turning white, her eyes were rolling back, and her lips were turning purple. He immediately called 911, lifted her off the bed, and started CPR. He continued CPR for eight minutes until EMS arrived.

After EMS took over, Jayden went above and beyond by searching social media to find her relatives and advise them of the situation.

“I have listened to the entire 911 call and am unbelievably blown away at how focused and calm he was able to remain during this terrifying situation,” said Amy.

In recognizing Jayden, Mary Newman, president of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation, said there were dozens of nominations for the award and it was challenging to select just one winner. “Everyone wins when people nearby act quickly and decisively to help victims of sudden cardiac arrest,” she said. “Reviewers, however, decided that this case best exemplified the critical importance of immediate proactive bystander action when sudden cardiac arrest occurs.”

Amy graciously accepted the award on Jayden’s behalf, sharing her experience before a large conference audience. Jayden will receive a ZOLL AED contributed by CoroMed that he may donate to a location of his choice.

About Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Sudden Cardiac Arrest is a life-threatening emergency that occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating. It strikes people of all ages who may seem to be healthy, even children and teens. When SCA happens, the person collapses and doesn’t respond or breathe normally. They may gasp or shake as if having a seizure. SCA leads to death in minutes if the person does not get help right away. Survival depends on people nearby calling 911, starting CPR, and using an automated external defibrillator, or AED (if available) as soon as possible.

About Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation
Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation is a national community benefit 501(c)(3) organization. Our vision is to eliminate preventable death and disability from sudden cardiac arrest and support people affected by SCA. Our mission is to raise awareness of SCA and promote initiatives that help save lives through education, research, and community. eddii, the Gamified Real-Time Diabetes Management App, Launches Nationwide

Those living with diabetes, wherever they are based in the US, can now install the eddii app from both the App Store for iOS users and Google Play for Android.

Since eddii’s official API partnership was announced with Dexcom in June this year, the app has integrated with its users’ real-time CGM readings, delivering updates on blood glucose levels. By combining Dexcom’s reliability, with the wit and charm of eddii’s sense of humor – encouraging users to monitor and keep on top of their blood glucose through his quirky language, eddii has received reams of initial praise.

eddii quickly amassed 16,000 sign-ups on the app’s early access waitlist, while a phased rollout, starting in Oklahoma and gradually opening up across middle American states saw over 4,000 users and a stellar 4.8-star rating on the iOS app store within months.

“We pride ourselves on listening to our user’s desires and always prioritize their needs. This is evident in our recent developments, implementing Spanish functionality across the app, introducing real-life gift cards as health incentives, creating an eddii Apple-watch widget, and of course improving our users’ favorite features, the quizzes, and character customization features” said Farhaneh Ahmadi, PhD, eddii’s CEO.

eddii is on a mission to enable access to diabetes care in every corner of the US, hence an initial focus on rural areas. The app’s imminent Virtual Care feature will only further that effort. Soon, on the same fun and gamified app that streams their child’s real-time glucose data from their Dexcom CGM, parents can schedule an appointment with a licensed pediatric endocrinologist at the tap of a button.

“This is only just the beginning of our plans”, expressed Farhaneh Ahmadi, PhD, eddii’s CEO. “eddii is gearing up to launch even more features as early as next year. Picture this: as children glance at their real-time CGM data on eddii, they’re simultaneously immersed in a world of fun and laughter, can seek support, and eagerly anticipate daily rewards – all within one dynamic interface

Over time, eddii evolves into a spirited health companion, tailored to his friend, cheering, challenging, and celebrating achievements. It’s not just managing diabetes; it’s turning health routines into an enjoyable journey. It’s making it fun.”

After conducting a clinical trial where 92 children with T1D and their families were enrolled in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) using Dexcom CGMs, the outcomes from the trial showed a statistically significant 5.3% improvement in Time In Range (TIR), roughly translating into 1.5 additional hours every day of optimal glucose levels for children living with T1D.

About eddii

eddii is a startup focused on making diabetes management fun. Founded by CEO Farhaneh Ahmadi, PhD., who lives with Type-1 diabetes, its vision is to create a fun, supportive, and educational interface that helps people living with diabetes take care of themselves around the clock and feel happier doing so.

Orthofix Donates Medical Equipment to Global Nonprofit Steps2Walk, Inc.

“Orthofix’s in-kind donation of medical equipment will be critical to our 2024 missions, beginning with our program in Pakistan in February,” said Dr. Mark Myerson, founder of Steps2Walk and a world-renowned orthopedic surgeon. “Many patients we see in the countries we visit have severe foot and ankle deformities and little to no access to basic medical support devices, let alone surgical care. With this donation, we can impact the lives of thousands of patients across the regions we visit.”

A leading global spine and orthopedics company, Orthofix produces medical devices and innovative solutions for a variety of procedures, including those focused on repairing foot and ankle trauma or deformities.

“At Orthofix, we strive to improve the lives of patients around the globe,” said Kim Elting, President of Global Orthopedics. “We are pleased to partner with Steps2Walk in support of their mission of giving individuals in underserved areas around the world the ‘Gift of Walking.’ We were proud to partner with the Steps2Walk team to identify how we could best support their mission and the patients and surgeons impacted by their programs.”

In 2024, Steps2Walk has 18 programs planned, including missions into countries where there is only one orthopedic surgeon who can treat severe foot and ankle deformities for every 50 million people. For this reason, the organization prioritizes providing intensive training and education so that local surgical residents can provide much-needed patient care.

“The devices and equipment donated by Orthofix will not only help us perform surgeries while on each mission,” said Dr. Myerson. “But they will also ensure we have the tools needed to demonstrate to our program registrants, the local surgeons themselves, advanced surgical techniques and practices they otherwise wouldn’t learn.”

For more information on how to become a volunteer faculty member or trainee participant in one of Steps2Walk’s programs, visit https://steps2walk.org/faculty/. Steps2Walk also accepts online donations, which can give the gift of walking to those who need it most and help fund critical training and education programs for regional orthopedic surgeons.

About Steps2Walk

Steps2Walk, a 501(c)(3) organization, is an international network of surgeons working to perform surgical care on individuals suffering from severe foot and ankle deformities in under-served regions of the world, while simultaneously educating orthopedic surgeons in various treatment and care alternatives. Founded by Dr. Mark Myerson in 2000 to provide a sustainable model of care and surgical training and to help patients regain their mobility and improve their quality of life, Steps2Walk envisions a world where everyone, no matter their circumstances, has access to quality surgical foot and ankle care. In its 23 years of service, Steps2Walk has completed more than 1,550 surgical operations and trained more than 1,500 regional surgeons in over 24 countries around the globe. By investing time into educating local surgeons and revisiting countries where the need is greatest and the resources are few, Steps2Walk is creating a lasting impact that will ultimately give The Gift of Walking to thousands of people worldwide.

American Board of Obesity Medicine announces more than 1,500 new diplomates as demand for better training and evidence-based obesity management grows

The 1,539 new Diplomates who passed the most recent exam join the 955 ABOM Diplomates who earned first-time board certification status in January 2023. Overall, the total number of obesity medicine physicians grew by 40 percent from 2022 to 2023.

Year    Number of ABOM Diplomates
2023*    8,263
2022    5,881
2021    5,242
2020    4,102
2019    3,377
2018    2,656
*Includes both classes of ABOM Diplomates announced in January 2023 and December 2023.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity affects over 40 percent of U.S. adults and increases the risks for heart disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke, and musculoskeletal problems. Obesity has been officially recognized as a disease by the American Medical Association since 2013, and many doctors want to help patients lose weight and improve health. However, physicians often graduate from medical school and residency programs with little or no training in weight management and nutrition – they are unfamiliar with treatment guidelines and have low confidence in their ability to treat obesity.

“The growth of obesity medicine board certification mirrors the rise in interest among physicians seeking a more evidence-based approach to treating patients with obesity,” said Dr. Judith Korner, MD PhD, Chair of the ABOM Board of Directors.

According to Dr. Kimberly Gudzune, MD MPH, ABOM Medical Director, board certification sends a strong signal to both patients and referring physicians that the Diplomate is prepared to partner with patients in addressing the complex challenges that obesity presents.
Dr. Gudzune also noted that new anti-obesity medications can demand an enhanced level of sophistication and training.

“In the past, many doctors prioritized treating the problems caused by obesity rather than the disease itself. This attitude may stem, in part, from pessimism toward the effectiveness of older treatment options. Now with the advent of highly effective anti-obesity medications, doctors are seeking certification to understand how to use these new tools,” said Dr. Gudzune. “Through the certification process, they also learn the complexity of the disease of obesity as well as comprehensive strategies for treatment.”

ABOM Diplomates come from a wide spectrum of medical disciplines and specialties with primary care physicians comprising the largest number of Diplomates, said Dr. Korner.

“The strong showing from the primary care community is promising because primary care physicians are often in the best position to treat obesity,” Dr. Korner said.

The 1,539 new Diplomates who passed the most recent ABOM certification exam include internists (561), family physicians (462), pediatricians/pediatric subspecialists (106), endocrinologists (75), surgeons (69), obstetricians/gynecologists (44), and gastroenterologists (39), along with numerous other specialists.

Certification as an ABOM Diplomate signifies specialized knowledge in the practice of obesity medicine and distinguishes a physician as having achieved competency in obesity care, with ABOM Diplomates incorporating obesity medicine into their everyday practices or devoting themselves full time to the treatment of obesity. The number of first-time ABOM certificates issued annually now exceeds those of other fields such as cardiology, pulmonary disease, and medical oncology.

The next obesity medicine certification exam will be administered October 14-26, 2024.

About the American Board of Obesity Medicine
The American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) serves the public and the field of obesity medicine by maintaining standards for assessment and credentialing physicians. Physicians who complete the ABOM certification process are designated Diplomates of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. To find an ABOM-certified obesity medicine physician, search our directory of Diplomates.
