Sterling Healthcare Services announces the launch of CDS-20, their COVID-19 governance service

Sterling Healthcare has launched its Coronavirus Governance Service (CDS-20). CDS-20 is a cloud-based analytics service that fulfills the needs of hospitals and other provider groups who will integrate COVID-19 financial reporting, auditing, analytics, and continuity capabilities into a compliance-based framework.

In an urgent response to the coronavirus pandemic and CMS’s new COVID-19 codes, Sterling Healthcare addresses an issue that could inhibit the correct diagnosis and procedure claims reporting. Sterling Healthcare empowers provider groups to mitigate claim denials while facilitating accurate clinical documentation, coding, and optimized financial and treatment protocols.

“Sterling’s Center of Excellence is leading the market by deploying the latest COVID-19 codes into Sterling’s analytics services,” said David Osborn, Sterling HCS’ Managing Director, and Healthcare Practice Leader.

Osborn shared, “Industry thought-leaders must take action to assist our healthcare providers, citizens, and the government to utilize all the necessary assets to curb COVID-19 and future outbreaks.”

Sterling Healthcare’s solution deploys a unique COVID-19 Continuity Plan encompassing both subject matter experts and cloud-based encrypted services. Additionally, providing accurate and secure insights is critical to avoid denials and coding errors typical in a fast-paced healthcare environment.”

Cryo-Cell Confirms Specimen Longevity of 23+ Years with Optimal CD34 Viability

Cryopreservation Tanks

Cryopreservation Tanks

Cryo-Cell International’s announcement is concurrent with the most recent research regarding the lifespan of stored cord blood performed by Dr. Hal Boxmeyer and colleagues, which determined sample viability of 23.5 years and suggested possible, indefinite length of storage time for cryogenically preserved cells under proper conditions. Cryo-Cell International marks the first family cord blood bank to release results concerning specimen viability for this length of time.

Since cord blood banking has only been in existence for 30 years, these findings indicate that specimen longevity nearly spans the lifetime of the industry. Research points to the idea that other cryogenically preserved cells remain undiminished by time, as long as cells are preserved at optimal storage temperature, where cellular activity is known to halt. Cryo-Cell International, Inc., stands as the only private use cord blood bank in the U.S. to receive the Foundation for the Accreditation for Cellular Therapy (FACT) accreditation, which addresses all quality aspects of cord blood collection, processing, testing, banking, selection and release of specimens.

Todd Schuesler, Director of Cryo-Cell International’s laboratory and cryopreservation facility, noted, “Cryo-Cell is accredited by FACT, AABB, and ISO13485, making us one of the most accredited cord blood banks in the U.S. These accreditations are only awarded to organizations with exceptional quality systems and acute commitment to customer care. It’s our employees who make the difference; for many, it is personal, based on previous or current experiences with diseases that can or will potentially be treated with stem cells.” Having access to cord blood and cord tissue for the treatment of diseases developed much later in life will prove to be invaluable as evolving research continues to reveal potential uses.

“These are simply amazing results that validates our belief that, if properly processed and maintained at the proper temperature, cryogenically preserved cord blood stem cells can provide regenerative benefits for at least the baby’s lifetime and likely for generations thereafter,” said David Portnoy, Cryo-Cell International’s Chairman and Co-CEO. Currently, cord blood stem cells have been FDA-approved for standard treatment in nearly 80 diseases. Numerous clinical trials are underway to explore the use of umbilical stem cells in the treatment of various degenerative conditions, including autism and cerebral palsy.

About Cryo-Cell International, Inc.

Founded in 1989, Cryo-Cell International, Inc. is the world’s first private cord blood bank. More than 500,000 parents from 87 countries trust Cryo-Cell to preserve their family members’ stem cells. Cryo-Cell’s mission is to provide clients with state-of-the-art stem cell cryopreservation services and support the advancement of regenerative medicine. Cryo-Cell operates in a facility that is FDA registered, cGMP-/cGTP-compliant, and is licensed in all states requiring licensure. Besides being AABB accredited as a cord blood facility, Cryo-Cell is also the first U.S. (for private use only) cord blood bank to receive FACT accreditation for adhering to the most stringent cord blood quality standards set by any internationally recognized, independent accrediting organization. In addition, Cryo-Cell is ISO 9001:2008 certified by BSI, an internationally recognized, quality assessment organization. Cryo-Cell is a publicly-traded company, OTCQB:CCEL. Kung Eye Center is the first and only practice in New York and New Jersey to offer the RxSight™ Light-Adjustable Lens (LAL) to Patients

Kung Eye Center

We’re very excited to be chosen as the first practice in New York or New Jersey to offer this exciting technology to our cataract patients

With locations in Staten Island, NY and East Brunswick, NJ, Kung Eye Center is the very first practice in both states to offer the Light-Adjustable Lens (LAL) by RxSight™ to cataract patients.

The Light Adjustable Lens is the first intraocular lens (IOL) that allows surgeons to make adjustments following cataract surgery, and it is the first FDA-approved IOL of this nature. The LAL is a three-piece silicone lens that is implanted just like a monofocal lens implant, except the LAL is made with a special photoreactive silicone, permitting surgeons to adjust a patient’s prescription after implantation by using a specialized Ultra-Violet (UV) light or Light Delivery Device (LDD).

This technology is ideal for patients undergoing cataract surgery that had previous vision correction surgery such as LASIK, PRK or RK. It is also ideal for patients that have corneal abnormalities and for patients seeking monovision or a more precise visual outcome following their cataract procedure.

In an FDA study which included 600 patients, those who received the LAL lens were twice as likely to achieve 20/20 vision without glasses, compared to those who received a standard monofocal lens.

Cataracts occur when the eye’s natural lens becomes clouded and rigid, blurring and darkening the vision. The only treatment option for cataracts is to remove the clouded lens and replace it with an artificial lens implant. While cataracts are one of the leading causes of blindness, the removal of cataracts is one of the safest and most common surgical procedures around in the world. The Light Adjustable Lens technology in cataract surgery helps improve visual outcomes by allowing surgeons to fine-tune and completely customize the patient’s refractive outcome after the cataract is removed and the LAL lens is implanted.

“We’re very excited to be chosen as the first practice in New York or New Jersey to offer this exciting technology to our cataract patients,” said John S. Kung, MD– Medical Director at Kung Eye Center.

Dr. Robert Grubbs of California Institute won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2005 for his theory of olefin metathesis, which is used in LAL technology.

Typically patients will return to their eye doctor to be prescribed reading glasses in order to see clearer following cataract surgery. But with this new technology, ophthalmologists are able to take the post-operative measurements and then utilize a special slit lamp equipped with a UV light. This causes the LAL to change shape in response to the light, improving vision more precisely to the patient’s needs. In just two to four treatments that only last 90 seconds, most patients are able to see very well at their preferred visual settings. For patients that choose monovision, most of these patients can reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or distance, intermediate and even up close vision.

Kung Eye Center will be performing its first LAL case on March 14th . The patient will wear special UV blocking glasses after the procedure. After a few weeks the patient will be adjusted using the Light Delivery Device (LDD) to the patient’s preferred prescription. The patient can have up to 3-4 adjustments before Dr. Kung locks in the final patient prescription.

About Kung Eye Center

Led by John Kung, MD, the Medical Director of Kung Eye Center, Kung Eye Center has played a key role in the development of ophthalmic surgeries such as LASIK and Laser Cataract Surgery. Dr. Kung has invented instruments used widely in the field, and authored “A Patient’s Guide to LASIK,” a resource that explains the complex procedure, as well as its benefits and risks, into easy-to- understand terms. He has published studies on the safety of vision correction surgery, and served as a consultant to the Canadian military. Fellow ophthalmologists often observe Dr. Kung at work in the operating room to learn new techniques and study new equipment in action. Dr Kung is an invited faculty member teaching new cataracts surgery techniques at the largest cataract only surgical meeting in the United States as well as an advanced phaco wet lab instructor at American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Dermatologist Fran Cook-Bolden, MD with Advanced Dermatology PC, Offers Tips on Ending the Frustrating Cycle of Keloid Scars

Dr. Fran Cook-Bolden

With keloids the scar bubbles up and over the confines of the wound, expanding to form pink, red or purple extrusions of shiny tissue, sometimes hard and rubbery, sometimes soft and doughy.

The patient had been battling the scar since his twenties: there were cycles of surgery, steroid injections, chemotherapy, lasers and pressure clips. Now, at forty-three, he was desperate: the bubble of shiny red skin below his ear was bigger than ever – and still growing, seemingly impervious to repeated treatments. “Keloid scars can be devastatingly persistent,” notes Dr. Fran Cook-Bolden, dermatologist with Advanced Dermatology PC. “It’s vital to work with a specialist who is aware of the latest research and treatment options.”

With normal scarring, the skin’s repair processes come to an end once the new surface is complete. With keloids, however, the off switch is missing: scar tissue bubbles up and over the confines of the wound, expanding to form pink, red or purple extrusions of shiny tissue, sometimes hard and rubbery, sometimes soft and doughy.

Dr. Cook-Bolden, notes that these abnormal scars are unpredictable: “A keloid may be smaller than an inch or grow as big as a football. They may begin immediately after skin trauma – or not until months later. Once started, they can continue to grow for years.”

Research continues on the reasons and mechanisms behind keloid scars, which affect about ten percent of the population. Genetics plays a role. Those with darker skin, including African Americans, Hispanics and Asians are more susceptible to the condition, which runs in families; more than fifty percent who experience keloids have a family member who is also affected. And, in particular, keloids develop during one’s teens and twenties, leading researchers to suspect that hormones also play a role.

“The particular challenge with keloids,” explains Dr. Cook-Bolden, “is that, in some cases, treatments to reduce the scar are only temporary – and may have the opposite effect, involving skin trauma that provokes additional scarring.”

“Fortunately, however,” he continues, “we are seeing new techniques that offer the possibility of ending the keloid regrowth cycle.”

For the forty-three year old patient who had contended with fifteen years of treatment failures, relief finally came when his doctors employed a new form of cryotherapy – using a specialized needle to pierce and freeze the aggressive scar from within, killing the problem cells and altering the tissue composition to inhibit regrowth.

“Intralesional cryotherapy,” observes Dr. Cook-Bolden, “is a good example of a recent newcomer that adds to our arsenal against keloid scars.”

To help patients understand more recent treatments and other considerations, Dr. Cook-Bolden makes the following suggestions:

5 Tips to Say Goodbye to Keloid Scars

1. Act fast: “Don’t ‘wait and see’,” emphasizes Dr. Cook-Bolden. “Younger, smaller scars are more treatable with a wider range of modalities.”

2. Double up: “In many cases,” explains Dr. Cook-Bolden, “a single approach – monotherapy – is not enough to prevent regrowth. For example, the often-employed steroid injections are more effective when paired with cryotherapy.”

3. “Frozen II” – The sequel is improved: “The traditional approach,” Dr. Cook-Bolden observes, “has been contact cryotherapy: freezing the outside of the scar. But, especially for larger scars, this didn’t penetrate to interior cells. We use the CryoShape needle to freeze the entire scar from the inside – and protect the healthy epidermis.”

4. Listen up! There’s a radiation news flash: “As with cryotherapy,” notes Dr. Cook-Bolden, “we also have newer approaches with superficial radiation therapy. The SRT-100 targets the overgrowth scar cells while protecting deeper cells. It’s especially effective when used within twenty-four hours of surgical scar removal – which does not prevent reoccurrence when used on its own.”

5. Take action to prevent keloids: “The American Academy of Dermatology’s web site provides steps on dressing wounds to avoid keloids,” says Dr Cook-Bolden. “Those at risk may want to consider life-style choices, such as piercings or tattoos. Piercings should be carefully monitored for skin thickening – with immediate action taken. If you’re thinking about a tattoo, do a sample skin check first.”

“The advances we’re seeing in treating keloids,” concludes Dr. Cook-Bolden, “offer patients relief without having to go through years of frustration.”

Fran Cook-Bolden, M.D., F.A.A.D., is board-certified in dermatology.

NeoTract Designates Dr. Walter Chiles as UroLift® Center of Excellence

News Image

“We are proud to name Dr. Walter Chiles as a UroLift Center of Excellence and provider of care for men with enlarged prostate symptoms using the UroLift System treatment,” said Dave Amerson

NeoTract, a wholly owned subsidiary of Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE:TFX) focused on addressing unmet needs in the field of urology, today announced that Walter Chiles, MD, Tennessee Urology in Nashville, TN, has been designated as a UroLift® Center of Excellence. The designation recognizes that Dr. Chiles has achieved a high level of training and experience with the UroLift® System and demonstrated a commitment to exemplary care for men suffering from symptoms associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate.

Recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines, the FDA-cleared Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH. The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue.

The UroLift Center of Excellence program is designed to highlight urologists who are committed to educating their patients on BPH and the UroLift System as a treatment option and consistently seek to deliver excellent patient outcomes and experiences.

“We are proud to name Dr. Walter Chiles as a UroLift Center of Excellence and provider of care for men with enlarged prostate symptoms using the UroLift System treatment,” said Dave Amerson, president of the Teleflex Interventional Urology business unit. “The UroLift System is a safe and effective treatment that allows physicians to treat men in-office under local anesthesia, so they can experience lasting symptom relief within days after receiving treatment.”

Over 40 million men in the United States are affected by BPH, a condition that occurs when the prostate gland that surrounds the male urethra becomes enlarged with advancing age and begins to obstruct the urinary system. Symptoms of BPH often include interrupted sleep and urinary problems and can cause loss of productivity, depression and decreased quality of life.

Medication is often the first-line therapy for enlarged prostate, but relief can be inadequate and temporary. Side effects of medication treatment can include sexual dysfunction, dizziness and headaches, prompting many patients to quit using the drugs. For these patients, the classic alternative is surgery that cuts, heats or removes prostate tissue to open the blocked urethra. While current surgical options can be very effective in relieving symptoms, they can also leave patients with permanent side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and retrograde ejaculation.

About the UroLift® System

The FDA-cleared UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a minimally invasive transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue. Clinical data from a pivotal 206-patient randomized controlled study showed that patients with enlarged prostate receiving UroLift implants reported rapid and durable symptomatic and urinary flow rate improvement without compromising sexual function*1,2. Patients also experienced a significant improvement in quality of life. Over 100,000 men have been treated with the UroLift System in the U.S. Most common adverse events reported include hematuria, dysuria, micturition urgency, pelvic pain, and urge incontinence. Most symptoms were mild to moderate in severity and resolved within two to four weeks after the procedure. The Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines. The UroLift System is available in the U.S., Europe, Australia, Canada, Mexico and South Korea. Learn more at http://www.UroLift.com.

“We are delighted to further develop our relationship with DuPont for the benefit of human health,” said APC Director Prof. Paul Ross. “APC Microbiome Ireland is a global leader, particularly in mother-infant and gut-brain areas of microbiome science, and this collaboration further strengthens our capabilities for advancing infant health and development.”

The population of bacteria in the gut develops over the first four years of life and plays a key role in human health. Establishment of a healthy gut microbiome in early life is influenced by birth mode, antibiotic use and nutrition, including breast milk components. Infant gut microbiota can be severely depleted in infants born by C-section or exposed to antibiotics. Breastfeeding can help improve microbiota composition.

APC Microbiome Ireland SFI Research Centre is ranked No. 1 globally for research in antimicrobial and therapeutic microbes and is in the top five institutions in the world for microbiome research.

“APC Microbiome Ireland has expanded the research and development capabilities of Ireland in an area of immediate relevance to the food and pharmaceutical sectors of industry,” added Prof. Catherine Stanton, Project Leader at APC Microbiome Ireland. “This project will allow us to identify the gut microbes in early life that play an important role in the short- and long-term health of individuals and will help to develop strategies to balance the microbiota following antibiotic exposure or C-section birth mode.”

Prof. Mark Ferguson, Director General of Science Foundation Ireland and Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government of Ireland said, “Science Foundation Ireland strongly welcomes this collaboration between DuPont and APC Microbiome Ireland SFI Research Centre. SFI Research Centres such as APC Microbiome Ireland are making important scientific advances, attract top research talent to Ireland, enhancing enterprise and industry, training students with critical in-demand skills, and boosting Ireland’s international reputation. We look forward to seeing the results of this industry partnership and its impact on public health.”

The Ireland-based research team also includes Prof. Eugene Dempsey, Consultant Neonatologist at Cork University Maternity Hospital and Clinical Senior Lecturer, Dept. of Pediatrics and Child Health, APC Microbiome Ireland SFI Research Centre, as well as the INFANT Research Centre (UCC) and Prof. John Cryan, who leads brain-gut-microbiome research at APC Microbiome Ireland SFI Research Centre.

About APC Microbiome Ireland

APC Microbiome Ireland SFI Research Centre (APC; http://apc.ucc.ie) explores the role that microbes (microbiome) play in health and disease. Based in University College Cork and Teagasc (the Irish Agriculture and Food Development Authority), APC Microbiome Ireland has established itself as one of the leading global centres in gut microbiota research and has made several landmark discoveries, publishing over 2,700 research articles in peer-reviewed journals. Recent research areas being led by APC Microbiome Ireland, include the development of new diagnostics or biomarkers of health or risk of disease (e.g. colon cancer) based on analysis of the microbiota; exploring the mechanisms by which the microbiota may be favorably mobilized or manipulated (e.g. by bacteriophage) to promote health and ‘mining’ the microbiota for new drugs (e.g. smart antibiotics) and functional food ingredients.
