Spartan Bioscience investigating ways to use their rapid, on-site DNA testing technology to help with the COVID-19 outbreak

The Spartan Cube

The Spartan Cube

“We have world-leading portable DNA testing technology but funding will be key to developing a rapid COVID-19 test.”- Paul Lem, M.D. and CEO of Spartan Bioscience

Spartan Bioscience, a Canadian biotechnology company and world leader in on-demand DNA testing(1), has developed a rapid, sample-to-result DNA testing platform that is designed for in-field diagnostic testing. Spartan’s technology has regulatory approvals worldwide, including FDA 510(k), European CE IVD Mark, and Health Canada. Spartan’s customers include leading organizations such as Mayo Clinic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), New York State Department of Health, and Fortune 500 companies.

Spartan’s Cube platform would be ideal for fast and portable detection of COVID-19 because it can be deployed in non-laboratory settings such as airports, cruise ships, military bases, and other critical points of entry. The CDC has developed a COVID-19 DNA test and Spartan is currently exploring how to perform the test on its platform.

Spartan Bioscience is led by CEO, Paul Lem, an infectious disease doctor by training. Lem says that Spartan has been exploring how the company’s technology could be applied to COVID-19 and thinks a commercial test could be available within 8 to 12 weeks.

“As a private company, it comes down to funding,” says Lem. “We have world-leading portable DNA testing technology but funding will be key to developing a rapid COVID-19 test.”

About Spartan Bioscience

Spartan Bioscience is a leader in rapid DNA testing. Spartan is bringing complete sample-to-result DNA testing systems to fields such as precision medicine, environmental water testing, and infectious diseases. Spartan’s technology fully integrates DNA collection, extraction, and analysis, with an intuitive interface that is easy to operate. In the same way that mainframe computers gave way to personal computers, high-throughput DNA testing systems in central labs are giving way to decentralized devices. For the first time, healthcare providers and their patients can get DNA results on demand. For more information, please visit our website at: http://www.spartanbio.com.

Portuguese Startups Join Forces to Create Technological Solutions Against COVID-19

Leaders of the Portuguese technology community today announced tech4COVID19, a movement aimed to create technological solutions to help society in overcoming the challenges of COVID-19.

The group has quickly evolved to include more than 120 companies and 2000 people from different backgrounds working together to help the country in the fight against the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Companies cover a range of work areas such as cybersecurity, health, maintenance, human resources, consulting, cloud services, e-commerce, medical devices, among many others.

The tech4COVID19 movement currently has 12 projects under development. Among the current efforts are projects that seek to improve the tracking of contagion networks; facilitate video calls between doctors and patients; create a support network for displaced doctors and nurses or people who simply need help to go shopping or to the pharmacy; create a chatbot to answer questions about the support granted by the state to companies and individuals; speed up the purchase of hospital supplies and launch a crowdfunding campaign to purchase the same supplies; disseminate information, recruit and coordinate health professionals or create a system that allows the population to check symptoms without having to go to the doctor.

A platform for access to all of the projects will be launched soon.

“There is so much talent, potential, and an ability to do great things within Portuguese startups that our motivation was to direct that potential towards initiatives that would help everyone in this difficult period,” says Felipe Ávila da Costa, spokesman for the tech4COVID19 group.

The group and the respective leaders of each project are already in contact with health professionals and with the competent entities, such as the Directorate-General for Health (Direção-Geral da Saúde), Shared Services of the Ministry of Health (Serviços Partilhados do Ministério da Saúde) and Regional Health Administrations (Administrações Regionais de Saúde). To ensure that the group’s projects are having the hightest impact, leaders are taking into account the country’s current needs and making sure there is no overlapping with operations already underway.

Altruista Deploys Evidence-based COVID-19 Assessment to Customers

News Image

It is during times like this that we must leverage the speed of technology development and support those who are on the front lines with patients — Munish Khaneja, MD

Altruista Health has today deployed an evidence-based COVID-19 assessment to health plan customers to be populated throughout the company’s GuidingCare technology platform for care management.

The emergency of COVID-19 has created a healthcare environment most Americans have never seen before and Altruista intends to support the healthcare ecosystem during this critical time.

“It is during times like this that we must leverage the speed of technology development and support those who are on the front lines with patients,” said Munish Khaneja, MD, MPH, FACP. Dr. Khaneja is Altruista’s chief medical officer and lead for clinical innovation.

The assessment incorporates all recommendations from the CDC and other health agencies. It incorporates both the physical health as related to the pandemic, but also the mental health of patients who are experiencing anxiety.

“Some of these patients are sick, some are worried, but all of them have the same question,” Dr. Khaneja said. “Do I have coronavirus?”

The questionnaire will stratify who should be tested based on clear risk factors and symptoms in order to focus on patients who most need help soonest. It has been distributed to all Altruista customers this morning.

Atlanta Plastic Surgery Specialists P.C. Offering Patients New Option For Body Sculpting With LipoLite, a New Laser Lipolysis Technology

News Image

I am passionate about helping my patients achieve their body shape goals. If you are struggling to shed pockets of fat with diet and exercise alone, our new LipoLite laser system may be the right choice for you, says Dr. Mark Mitchell Jones

With the use of Syneron’s LipoLite, patients can see liposuction-like results without significant discomfort or downtime that is more affordable than traditional liposuction. Dr. Mark Mitchell Jones of Atlanta Plastic Surgery Specialists P.C. in Atlanta, Georgia, is now able to provide this option to his patients. Dr. Jones is an internationally educated, world-class trained and double board-certified (plastic surgery and ENT) surgeon. His most popular services include body contouring and breast surgery, facial plastic surgery, ear surgery and a full array of non-surgical procedures to help patients look and feel their best. Dr. Mark Mitchell Jones is a renowned expert in the field of body sculpting. If you are struggling to lose weight, laser liposuction at Atlanta Plastic Surgery Specialists P.C., with the FDA-approved LipoLite, may help you boost your efforts.

Most often, LipoLite is performed on the neck, abdomen, arms and jowls. The other areas that are commonly treated include gynecomastia, saddlebags and knees. With LipoLite, a small incision is made, and a cannula is inserted through it. A thin laser beam is then directed into the layer of fat that has to be removed through the cannula. The laser beam (at 1064 nm), directed through the cannula tube, will rupture the fat cells. This will liquefy the fat in the target area, broken down by thermal energy. The fat is suctioned out through the same incision used for the cannula tube. The accuracy of the laser target and the heat passed through is monitored by the LipoLite machine. The procedure is carried out with local anesthesia and is considered a minimally invasive treatment option.

“I am passionate about helping my patients achieve their body shape goals. If you are struggling to shed pockets of fat with diet and exercise alone, our new LipoLite laser system may be the right choice for you,” says Dr. Mark Mitchell Jones

More About Dr. Mark Mitchell Jones:

Dr. Jones received his medical degree from The Medical College of Georgia and also attended the University of Canterbury in New Zealand and Oxford University Honours School in England. He completed his residencies at Johns Hopkins University and Stanford University and was selected for a Fulbright fellowship, training under world-leading plastic surgeons in Paris, France, including the inventor of liposuction, Dr. Illouz. Dr. Mark Mitchell Jones has been recognized for his surgical innovations and skill in enhancing both the aesthetics and functionality of the body. He is a scholar and a teacher in his field, contributing to medical journals and presenting at numerous conferences and events. Dr. Jones is often interviewed by national publications and broadcast television programs.

Patients with Food Allergies May be Susceptible to Avoidant-Restrictive Food Intake Disorder

AAAAI Logo

“ARFID can be a long-lasting disorder that can cause significant impairment in daily functioning if not effectively addressed.” – Brian P. Vickery, MD, FAAAAI

According to a new study that had been scheduled to be presented during the 2020 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) Annual Meeting before its cancellation due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), Avoidant-Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) could be a comorbidity associated with food allergy.

ARFID was recently added to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). It is defined as someone who either doesn’t consume enough calories or doesn’t receive sufficient dietary variety to the detriment of their development or maintenance of body function, and who doesn’t meet the definitions of a different medical eating disorder. Researchers predicted that because food allergies require elimination diets, patients may be at risk of developing ARFID.

To determine this, research psychologists conducted interviews as well as chart review with guardians of 54 children going to an allergy/immunology clinic for food allergy evaluation. Data such as demographics, growth parameters, food allergies, eating habits and details about food groups consumed, family impact, and additional comorbid medical conditions was collected.

Of those interviewed, 56% described restricting food intake beyond the known or suspected allergens, and 37% reported that their child was the one to restrict food intake themselves. Among those interviewed, 20% met the criteria of at least one of the subtypes of ARFID while another 11 participants were considered as possible/probable cases.

Though more than half of participants described restricted diets beyond the scope of specific allergens or due to a “picky eater,” most children still had normal growth parameters. “We were happy to see that growth parameters were still usually being met,” said author Brian P. Vickery, MD, FAAAAI, “but ARFID can be a long-lasting disorder that can cause significant impairment in daily functioning if not effectively addressed.”

ARFID is reversible with proper individualized feeding therapy and education. “Our hope is that by implementing multidisciplinary feeding interventions to our food allergy patients, we’ll not only reduce allergy-specific stress by equipping parents with effective feeding strategies, but hopefully prevent the development of ARFID in patients who may have otherwise never developed it,” Dr. Vickery added. “The goal is to ensure that the medically necessary elimination diets required for food allergy patients are not overly restrictive, preserving adequate nutrition and allowing for normal functioning as much as possible.”

Visit aaaai.org to learn more about food allergies. This research was published in an online supplement to The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.

The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) represents allergists, asthma specialists, clinical immunologists, allied health professionals and others with a special interest in the research and treatment of allergic and immunologic diseases. Established in 1943, the AAAAI has over 7,000 members in the United States, Canada and 72 other countries. Westwind Integrated Health Helps Patients Recognize and Treat Early Symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease in Glendale, AZ

Dr. Nabil Fehmi and Dr. Maryam Beyramian, Dentists Serving Phoenix and Glendale, AZ

Westwind Integrated Health Helps Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease in Glendale, AZ

Westwind Integrated Health provides Alzheimer’s screenings and other cognitive testing to improve the chances of catching Alzheimer’s disease early and provide necessary care.

The dentists and medical doctors of Westwind Integrated Health raise awareness of Alzheimer’s disease and the preventive steps patients can take to maintain their physical and oral health as they age. This dental-medical healthcare practice provides comprehensive, whole-body healthcare in the Phoenix and Glendale, AZ areas, including gum disease treatment to lower patients’ risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive condition resulting in cognitive decline and memory loss over time. The most common Alzheimer’s symptoms include memory loss, confusion, forgetfulness, difficulty completing everyday tasks, and personality or behavior changes. While this disease affects over 5 million Americans and is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States, it is incorrectly believed to be a normal part of aging. Though some individuals may be genetically more likely to develop this disease, certain lifestyle choices can decrease the risk of Alzheimer’s symptoms and prevent the condition altogether. Maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, not smoking, stimulating the brain, and good oral health (including a mouth free from gum disease) all play a role in preventing Alzheimer’s disease.

Individuals with gum disease symptoms, including bleeding gums, bad breath, gum recession, or loose teeth, may be at a higher risk for Alzheimer’s disease and should seek treatment immediately. A recent study published in Science Advances has found a link between the P. gingivalis bacteria associated with gum disease and Alzheimer’s symptoms. The bacteria can travel from the infected gums to the brain, releasing toxins that can destroy the neurons vital for healthy cognitive functioning. Alzheimer’s disease is not the only systemic condition that has been linked to gum disease. Gum disease has been noted to increase the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke, as well. Maintaining good oral health, in addition to good physical health, and seeing a medical doctor and dentist regularly can help reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s symptoms.

The dentists and medical doctors at Westwind Integrated Health provide Alzheimer’s screenings and other cognitive testing to improve the chances of catching the disease early and provide necessary care. The collaborative team also offers comprehensive gum disease treatment to improve both oral health and physical health, reducing the risk for conditions like Alzheimer’s disease. The dental-medical practice focuses on whole-body healthcare (including nutritional counseling and vision and hearing screenings) and incorporate both dental and medical care for children and adults in their nine locations.

Individuals experiencing symptoms of either Alzheimer’s disease or gum disease in Phoenix or Glendale, AZ are encouraged to contact Westwind Integrated Health as soon as possible. Visit http://www.westwindintegratedhealth.com or call 602-457-8024 to schedule an appointment.
