NeoTract Designates Dr. Achai Modi as UroLift® Center of Excellence

News Image

“We are pleased to recognize Dr. Achai Modi as a UroLift Center of Excellence for his commitment to providing consistent care to BPH patients using the UroLift System treatment,” said Dave Amerson

NeoTract, a wholly owned subsidiary of Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE:TFX) focused on addressing unmet needs in the field of urology, today announced that Achai Modi, M.D., USMD Midlothian in Midlothian, TX has been designated as a UroLift® Center of Excellence. The designation recognizes that Dr. Modi has achieved a high level of training and experience with the UroLift® System and demonstrated a commitment to exemplary care for men suffering from symptoms associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate.

Recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines, the FDA-cleared Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH. The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue.

The UroLift Center of Excellence program is designed to highlight urologists who are committed to educating their patients on BPH and the UroLift System as a treatment option and consistently seek to deliver excellent patient outcomes and experiences.

“We are pleased to recognize Dr. Achai Modi as a UroLift Center of Excellence for his commitment to providing consistent care to BPH patients using the UroLift System treatment,” said Dave Amerson, president of the Teleflex Interventional Urology business unit. “This achievement has helped many patients experience durable, longterm relief from the burdensome symptoms of BPH while preserving sexual function*1,2.”

Over 40 million men in the United States are affected by BPH, a condition that occurs when the prostate gland that surrounds the male urethra becomes enlarged with advancing age and begins to obstruct the urinary system. Symptoms of BPH often include interrupted sleep and urinary problems and can cause loss of productivity, depression and decreased quality of life.

Medication is often the first-line therapy for enlarged prostate, but relief can be inadequate and temporary. Side effects of medication treatment can include sexual dysfunction, dizziness and headaches, prompting many patients to quit using the drugs. For these patients, the classic alternative is surgery that cuts, heats or removes prostate tissue to open the blocked urethra. While current surgical options can be very effective in relieving symptoms, they can also leave patients with permanent side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and retrograde ejaculation.

About the UroLift® System

The FDA-cleared UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a minimally invasive transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue. Clinical data from a pivotal 206-patient randomized controlled study showed that patients with enlarged prostate receiving UroLift implants reported rapid and durable symptomatic and urinary flow rate improvement without compromising sexual function*1,2. Patients also experienced a significant improvement in quality of life. Over 100,000 men have been treated with the UroLift System in the U.S. Most common adverse events reported include hematuria, dysuria, micturition urgency, pelvic pain, and urge incontinence. Most symptoms were mild to moderate in severity and resolved within two to four weeks after the procedure. The Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines. The UroLift System is available in the U.S., Europe, Australia, Canada, Mexico and South Korea. Learn more at http://www.UroLift.com.

Center for Vein Restoration Providing Essential Care During COVID-19 Pandemic

News Image

“We are here for the community… We are rallying our teams in providing essential care that can help those on the front lines in real time.”

Center for Vein Restoration (CVR), the national leader in treating venous disorders, is affirming its commitment to the healthcare community during the COVID-19 pandemic. CVR locations nationwide will continue delivering essential medical services such as STAT DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) Rule-Outs and wound care for venous ulcers, among other critical vascular treatments and diagnoses, keeping patients out of high-exposure risk hospitals and emergency rooms. To ensure accessibility, Center for Vein Restoration is also waiving patient co-pays through April 30 and are seeing all patients irrespective of insurance status.

“We are here for the community,” said Sanjiv Lakhanpal, MD, FACS, Cardiovascular surgeon, as well as President and CEO of CVR. “We are rallying our teams in providing essential care that can help those on the front lines in real time. All 90 of our centers will take vascular emergencies and triage them in an effort to get patients safe treatments outside of a hospital setting.”

At this time, CVR is suspending all elective cosmetic sclerotherapy treatments through April 30.

“It’s our duty to be efficient and part of the solution. We are keeping active dialogue with local, county, and state health boards – offering our support and expertise,” said Dr. Khanh Nguyen, Chief Medical Officer. “Primary care physicians should know CVR is prioritizing the care of their patients to ensure safety and efficiency at all our centers,” he ended.

CVR has convened a COVID-19 Response Team charged with navigating these unprecedented times.

“This pandemic is all encompassing, no question,” said VP of Human Resources, Wendy Walker. “While it’s critical we serve our mission and be part of the healthcare solution, we have an enormous responsibility to our employees to make sure they can provide this care in the safest way possible. We’re taking every precaution.” CVR has over 500 employees throughout 18 states and Washington, DC.

ABOUT VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY

Venous insufficiency, the cause of significant suffering due to the sequelae of venous hypertension, most commonly arises as achy, tired and heavy legs. It may or may not be associated with varicose veins, spider veins or skin changes including venous ulcerations and indiscriminately affects between 30–40 million Americans. Numerous factors including age, weight, prolonged sitting or standing, genetics or a history of DVT (blood clots) can increase the risk of developing this common and often underdiagnosed disorder. Treatment options have evolved to an array of minimally invasive procedures in an office setting.

ABOUT CENTER FOR VEIN RESTORATION

Center for Vein Restoration (CVR) is the largest physician-led practice treating vein disease in the country. Having performed its first procedure in 2007 under President and CEO Dr. Sanjiv Lakhanpal, Center for Vein Restoration has since become nationally recognized as the clinical leader in treating chronic venous insufficiency. With 90 centers and growing, CVR has over 500 employees and conducts over 200,000 patient interactions annually. Revivalist Gin Producing Sanitizer in their Chester County, PA Distillery

Don and Scott Avellino

We are taking care of the heroes on the frontlines and in hospitals first, but we hope to be able to produce enough sanitizer to help as many others as possible in the coming weeks.

Scott and Don Avellino of Revivalist Spirits have turned their craft gin distillery in Elverson, PA into a sanitizer production facility during the COVID-19 outbreak.

With an extreme shortage in (hand) sanitizer throughout the U.S., the sibling gin producers decided to convert their production facility into the sterilizing agent by utilizing their neutral grain spirit to produce as much sanitizer as possible for healthcare professionals on the frontlines, including doctors, nurses, first responders and paramedics.

Their facility consists of two floors — 5,000 square feet each — and the Avellino Brothers are temporarily utilizing their entire first floor distilling plant to mass produce sanitizer. Furthermore, the Avellinos are working on developing a botanical hand sanitizer which will have an aroma similar to their gin.

The TTB (Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau), as well as the PCLB, which is in charge of alcohol taxation within PA, told producers last week that they would get out of their way and not tax spirits producers for this type of production during this crisis, as long as the approved distilleries were following the recipe of the World Health Organization.

“The federal and local government agencies that regulate us really stepped up and made it easy for us to do this,” said Scott Avellino. “We are trying to help as many people as possible. We are taking care of the heroes on the frontlines and in hospitals first, but we hope to be able to produce enough sanitizer to help as many others as possible in the coming weeks.”

Revivalist Spirits by Brandywine Branch Distillers is located at 350 Warwick Road in Elverson, PA. Learn more by visiting http://revivalistspirits.com.

MTI Dental’s Recommendations for Safe and Effective Cleaning and Maintenance of Dental Handpieces During the COVID-19 Crisis

COVID-19 (also known as SARS-CoV-2, 2019-nCoV, and “Novel Coronavirus”) has profoundly affected the daily lives of people across the globe. In recent weeks, COVID-19 has unexpectedly ingrained itself into the constant and persistent thoughts of American citizens and Medical Professionals alike. As such, MTI Dental has adapted its operations and processes to be as flexible and resilient as possible, while not only maintaining stringent manufacturing and product safety guidelines, but also increasing such measures to ensure the utmost quality and safety standards for both staff and customers.

From the moment COVID-19 jumped from its first U.S. city to its second, the Leadership Team recognized the need to enhance existing meticulous and longstanding safety standards, in the event the situation became more widespread.

Dental Professionals are most susceptible to potential exposure to spreading of COVID-19, especially Hygienists and Dentists.

MTI Dental fully supports the ADA in recommending that all non-emergency (non-essential) dental procedures be rescheduled until further notice. If your practice is still scheduling patients during this vulnerable time, PLEASE AUTOCLAVE YOUR HANDPIECES BETWEEN EACH AND EVERY PATIENT. Alcohol wipes do not provide nearly as effective a sanitization result as an autoclave and will do nothing to kill the infectious contagions within the handpiece. The simple practice of sterilization has never been so critical in preventing and spreading contagions.

Surfaces used to store or temporarily place handpieces, tools, and/or accessories should be cleaned immediately between patients. Reports from the CDC indicate that COVID-19 can stay viable in the air in the form of micro-droplets for up to 3 hours.

COVID-19 can also remain viable on most surfaces for 3 hours or more, most notably:

  • Up to 4 Hours on Copper
  • Up to 24 Hours on Cardboard
  • Up to 3 Days on Plastics and Stainless Steel

Additional information about MTI Dental products can be referenced on the website (mtidental.com), and is available even if team members are not available to immediately answer calls or emails.

The goal during this crisis, is to assist the global community in slowing down the spread of COVID-19 through ensuring a safe and healthy workplace for team members, while also providing uninterrupted service to customers, group practices, and distributor partners.

In this effort, MTI Dental has committed to the following modifications to Operations:

  • Additional Hygiene-Focused Policies Have Been Activated
  • How Team Members Transition Between Shifts Have Been Modified
  • Social Distancing Policies
  • Flexible Policies Related to Additional Time Off
  • Ability for Team Members to Work Remotely
  • Increased Cleanings for Office and Manufacturing Facilities

Consistent and dependable service is incredibly important to MTI Dental and its clients, however, accountability and responsibility to the health of team members supersedes all else. MTI Dental is aware that many of its customers may have critical dental procedures that cannot be postponed, and is dedicated to doing its part in supporting dental practices with the necessary handpieces, tools, and accessories to perform those procedures.

Like many other American businesses, MTI Dental is settling into the “new normal,” but is steadfast in its resolve to provide customers with the products and service necessary to get through this crisis.

“Be pragmatic and stay positive.”

About MTI Dental:

As an American manufacturer with over 40 years of expertise in producing precision dental handpieces and tools, MTI Dental offers customers dependable and quality-focused products in a market saturated with aftermarket, gray label, and non-compliant equipment. Featuring industry leading designs, warranties, and 5-Star customer service, MTI Dental prides itself on not being just sales people – we are proud American manufacturers.

TriageLogic® Implementing Emergency COVID-19 Hotlines and Remote Care Solutions for Health Centers

News Image

We are working around the clock to help our current clients as well as other health centers put processes in place to help patients and concerned callers

TriageLogic, a leader in telephone nurse triage and remote patient communication, announces easy-to-implement solutions that hospitals, medical organizations, and health centers can use for patient care during the COVID-19 crisis.

As the healthcare sector adapts to the coronavirus pandemic, many medical professionals are working around the clock to implement emergency support solutions for patients who present worrying symptoms, as well as those who need help understanding the guidelines for care. The following can be implemented with minimal time requirements:

A coronavirus-trained hotline. This is available 24/7 for the purpose of screening patient questions, providing information, and following scripts on behalf of specific practices and medical groups. With a significant increase in patient calls, the ability to discern which ones require additional medical attention and which are only seeking advice is paramount to a functional office staff. Instead of delegating this task to nurses and doctors, trained hotline professionals can address these concerns directly—from explaining coronavirus symptoms, to sending relevant materials for patients to use. Those presenting symptoms can then be referred to providers for further evaluation. TriageLogic can either supply the hotline and staff necessary to man it, or simply the telephone system and processes that fully-staffed organizations can use.

Nurse triage software with COVID-19 protocols. MyTriageChecklist is a fast-to-train, web-enabled software that provides continuity in patient care and education. It takes less than an hour to implement, does not store any sensitive patient information, and offers an easy-to-use interface to ensure nurses ask and document all relevant questions related to patient symptoms consistently. It also includes triage protocols written by Dr. Schmitt and Dr. Thompson, which are being updated in real-time as new information surrounding COVID-19 becomes available.

A remote call center with phone system. TriageLogic can set up your certified nurses for any location that is connected to a call center-grade, HIPAA-compliant phone system. This allows an organization to keep their clinical staff at home and coordinate as a team to evaluate patients remotely.

“We are working around the clock to help our current clients as well as other health centers put processes in place to help patients and concerned callers. We are also working with remote monitoring companies to have a process in place to help patients at risk, or after a hospitalization at their homes,” says TriageLogic’s Ravi Raheja, MD.

About TriageLogic®

TriageLogic is a URAC-accredited, physician-led provider of top-quality nurse telehealth technology, mobile applications, and medical call center solutions, all with the purpose of encouraging positive patient behavior and improving access to healthcare. Founded in 2006, the TriageLogic Group now serves more than 9,000 physicians and covers over 20 million lives nationwide. They continue to partner with private practices, hospitals, and corporations throughout the U.S.

Amramp provided commercial ramping to allow access to this triage facility trailer container using a 5 x 7’ platform, a 6 x 5’ platform and 22’ of 48” wide commercial ramping.

Amramp provides wheelchair ramps, lifts and other accessibility equipment for commercial and residential residents to provide access to buildings and homes.

Amramp is the leading company in the United States specializing in modular steel wheelchair ramps, offering sturdy, customizable ramps for disability access that enable the aging and disabled population to remain in their homes with independence and mobility. Ramps can be installed temporarily for short or long-term needs without damaging the housing structure as they are not a permanent modification to the home. Amramp products comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and are available for sale or rental with no minimum time frame and no ramp size restrictions.

Early praise for INSPIREd Healthcare: A Value-Based Care Coordination Model

“INSPIREd Healthcare is a brilliant case study in ‘hope’ for the American healthcare system. Billie Allard and her team have creatively hacked through the thicket of financial reimbursement, bureaucracy, and culture to forge a clear path to value-based, quality care. Follow them!”

–Kathleen Bartholomew, MN, RN

Nurse Leader, Author, and Speaker

“Nurses represent the largest segment of the healthcare workforce and are present in almost every environment in which healthcare is delivered. For true healthcare reform to take place, nurses must be active co-leaders, and the INSPIRE Model demonstrates this leadership. This well-organized book, full of resources, will guide you in using clear recommendations and best practices, with real examples that lead to impressive results. An inspiring book by a truly remarkable nurse leader.”

–Amanda Stefancyk Oberlies, PhD, MBA, RN

As healthcare costs continue to outpace the economy, healthcare systems are shifting from fee-for-service to a value-based payment system to deliver high-quality care and reduce costs. This shift presents an opportunity for nurses to take the lead in transforming care delivery and improve patient experience while reducing costs.

Filled with practical content for both clinical and academic settings, INSPIREd Healthcare follows author Billie Lynn Allard and her team of nurses as they successfully implement an accountable community of health in pursuit of the Triple Aim goals: improving patient experience of care, improving health of populations, and reducing per capita healthcare costs. The INSPIRE Model they follow provides an evidence-based blueprint for other healthcare systems hoping to solve the complicated problems surrounding care transitions and health promotion.

“There is a pathway to success for value-based payment that empowers nurses to take the reins to deliver value based, person-centered care,” said author Billie Lynn Allard, MS, RN, FAAN. “It will be the most rewarding work of your career!”

OU Health Sciences Center Partners With Pure MHC on COVID-19 Vaccine Project

Pure MHC has obtained the actual COVID-19 virus, will infect cells and look for the targets on the infected cells. Pure MHC will then use those targets to either develop a vaccine or to directly target them with something like monoclonal antibodies.

Curtis McMurtrey, Ph.D., Director of Immuno-Proteomics at Pure MHC

With OU, we are acquiring the actual COVID-19 virus, and we will infect cells and look for the targets on the infected cells. We will use those targets to either develop a vaccine or to directly target them with something like monoclonal antibodies.

OUHSC and Pure MHC have launched a research collaboration to work toward the development of a vaccine for the COVID-19 virus. The scientific team is led by William Hildebrand, Ph.D., whose expertise is helping the body’s protective immune cells target and kill virus-infected cells. He will be working with Pure MHC, part of a family of biotechnology companies formed, funded and managed by Austin, TX based Emergent Technologies, Inc. (ETI). Approximately 20 years ago, ETI commercialized and advanced Hildebrand’s and others’ research to develop breakthrough drugs and therapies. This partnership represents a unique collaboration between researchers in a university setting and a company with the scientific expertise and investment to further the project.

Hildebrand’s research career has focused on a crucial component of vaccine development: creating targets that help the immune system’s T-cells find and kill virus-infected cells. Because COVID-19 is an entirely new virus, the body’s immune system has not been trained to recognize it. Hildebrand’s research discoveries could provide a target for a potential vaccine.

“The body’s T-cells are able to distinguish virus-infected cells from healthy cells and, for the most part, they are able to eliminate infected cells without harming healthy cells,” Hildebrand said. “However, with COVID-19, our T-cells have not been prepared to recognize this coronavirus, and the disease is able to get a foothold before our immune system is able to catch up to it. What we want to do is to prepare our cells in advance, just as the body uses the flu vaccine – it gets your immune system ready to target the flu. Our role is to identify the targets that mark COVID-19, and then steer the T-cells to those targets using a vaccine.”

Hildebrand has been working on this type of target discovery technology for nearly three decades. He successfully discovered a target that allows T-cells to protect against the West Nile Virus, as well as a cancer target that allows T-cells to kill the malignant cells in melanoma. Now his charge is to discover the target for COVID-19.

For that work, the OU Health Sciences Center brings an important resource to the collaboration with Pure MHC: a Biosafety Laboratory-3, one of the safest and most specialized laboratories for working with infectious diseases. The laboratory ensures a high level of protection for research personnel because they will be working with the live virus.

“With OU, we are acquiring the actual COVID-19 virus, and we will infect cells and look for the targets on the infected cells,” said Curtis McMurtrey, Ph.D., Director of Immuno-Proteomics for Pure MHC and a graduate of the OU Health Sciences Center. “We will use those targets to either develop a vaccine or to directly target them with something like monoclonal antibodies.”

“Because the OU Health Sciences Center and Pure MHC have been working together on similar projects for over 20 years, they are uniquely positioned to quickly develop a target for COVID-19”, said Tommy Harlan, founder, chairman and CEO of Emergent Technologies, Inc., the technology commercialization company that manages Pure MHC. Harlan said he founded his company specifically to find and commercialize early-stage discoveries so they can positively affect human health and disease.

“After 20 years of working with Dr. Hildebrand and the OU Health Sciences Center, and through our commercial entity Pure MHC, we are positioned to pursue this discovery project very quickly at a time when speed is important,” Harlan said. “It all lines up at a time when society needs help with this devastating disease.”

Such partnerships are key to the university moving its discoveries into the marketplace, said James Tomasek, Ph.D., Vice President for Research at the OU Health Sciences Center. In 1998, the state of Oklahoma passed two state questions that allowed academic research to be transformed into start-up biotech companies. Tomasek, along with the university’s Office of Technology Commercialization, assist researchers in preparing their science for outside licensing and investment.

“The partnership between the OU Health Sciences Center and Pure MHC, a company developed from OU Health Sciences Center technology and housed at University Research Park in Oklahoma City, demonstrates how discoveries can be taken from the lab to the marketplace to address critical healthcare needs, like developing a vaccine for COVID-19,” Tomasek said.
