Sentien Biotechnologies Names Richard Ganz as Executive Chairman

News Image

Sentien Biotechnologies, Inc., a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing novel approaches to cell therapy, today announced the appointment of Richard Ganz as Executive Chairman. Mr. Ganz will continue to lead Sentien’s Board of Directors, a role he has filled for the past nine years, as well as work closely with CEO Brian Miller and Sentien’s management team.

Mr. Ganz has more than 30 years of experience in the healthcare industry. His previous roles include Executive-in-Residence for Kairos Venture Investments, Principal of RGA Life Sciences, Chief Operating Officer of Piramal Critical Care, a global pharmaceutical company; President and Chief Executive Officer at Omnisonics Medical Technologies; President of the North American Renal Division for Baxter International, Inc; and Divisional Vice President and General Manager of Vascular Products at Abbott Laboratories.

“We are very pleased that Mr. Ganz has expanded his leadership role with Sentien,” said Sentien CEO, Brian Miller. “His breadth of experience across several areas of the healthcare industry as well as his depth of knowledge in the critical care disease space has made him an invaluable member of our board. Through this new expanded capacity, Mr. Ganz will provide further strategic leadership as we fundraise for clinical expansion for COVID-19.”

“I am very excited to be expanding my role with Sentien’s leadership team as Executive Chairman,” said Mr. Ganz. “While serving as chairman of the board, I have witnessed Sentien’s rapid growth into a clinical-stage company and I continue to believe strongly in the potential of Sentien’s technology to treat systemic inflammatory diseases. I look forward to contributing to the company’s continued growth in this expanded capacity.”

About Sentien Biotechnologies

Sentien Biotechnologies, Inc. is a privately-held, clinical-stage company developing novel ex-vivo cell therapy applications to treat conditions caused by systemic, immune-mediated inflammation. Sentien’s lead product, SBI-101, integrates allogeneic mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) within an extracorporeal, hollow-fiber device. By immobilizing MSCs within a blood-filtration device, SBI-101 allows for prolonged exposure of patient blood to the MSCs, resulting in the dynamic delivery of MSC-secreted factors at doses that are unattainable by direct injection.

SBI-101 is being evaluated in Phase 1b/2a study in subjects with dialysis-requiring acute kidney injury (AKI-D). An interim readout from the clinical study provides evidence of anti-inflammatory and wound healing effects consistent with the SBI-101 therapeutic hypothesis. Building on this therapeutic hypothesis, SBI-101 is being pursued in COVID-19 patients suffering from severe systemic inflammation.

Sentien’s technology can be applied to additional systemic inflammatory indications in both acute and chronic diseases, focusing on complex diseases where single-factor agents have not been effective.

CampbellWilson’s staff will join an existing team of nearly 250 professionals in BKD’s DFW offices.

“With the addition of CampbellWilson, BKD will strengthen what’s already one of the largest health care consulting teams in Texas,” said BKD’s South Region Health Care Industry Leader Chris Clark. “We’re especially excited about launching the time study system with our clients firmwide, giving us another chance to provide Unmatched Client Service®.”

NACDS – Representing 40,000 pharmacies with 155,000 Pharmacists

Preparing now is critical, as 80 percent of nation can be vaccinated seven weeks sooner when neighborhood pharmacies are engaged.

To reopen the nation successfully and to suppress future COVID-19 outbreaks, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) is urging government actions supporting three key objectives that are crucial for the health of all Americans, and especially for those who are left behind economically and medically. These actions relate directly to testing, contact tracing and vaccines or treatments.

The national organization representing 40,000 traditional, grocery and mass retail pharmacies, with 155,000 pharmacists, lists these steps in a new report issued today, “Pharmacies: A Vital Partner in Reopening America.” The steps support these key objectives:

  • Maximize rapid COVID-19 testing operations across all platforms and venues
  • Support public health surveillance and related contact tracing efforts
  • Prepare now: accelerate access to forthcoming COVID-19 vaccines and treatments.

“This paper outlines three key operational considerations for the Trump Administration, Congress, and governors as they develop recovery plans aimed at unlocking the national economy and local economies while still protecting the health of communities. As states consider future actions, thought leaders should strive toward uniformity to the greatest extent possible, as doing so allows for more seamless participation from private sector partners, especially those operating across multiple states,” NACDS says in the report.

Specific to pharmacies and pharmacists, NACDS urges: “Community pharmacies should remain a critical centerpiece of the COVID-19 pandemic response and future mitigation strategies. Pharmacies continue to collaborate with state and local public health officials on pandemic surveillance and sharing critical information to inform state health and economic decisions. As our nation moves forward, we proffer that federal and state governments should enhance engagement with pharmacies across the response continuum from scaling community testing to executing a national pandemic immunization plan.”

Vaccines and Treatments

Looking forward to the availability of COVID-19 medications and vaccines, NACDS cites a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study that found retail pharmacies help to vaccinate 80 percent of the population seven weeks sooner during a pandemic than otherwise would be possible. Accessibility remains a pharmacy hallmark, with 90 percent of Americans living within five miles of one.

One rapidly approaching litmus test presented in the NACDS report is a June 24 meeting of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices – at which the Committee could take one action that would have the effect of permitting pharmacists in half of the states to provide a forthcoming COVID-19 vaccine. The NACDS report describes a series of additional recommendations for a well-planned vaccination program in all states.

Testing

Among its COVID-19 testing recommendations, the NACDS report identifies further policy barriers that must be removed; urges the inclusion of pharmacist-provided testing in state Medicaid programs; encourages states to facilitate partnerships among pharmacies, local businesses and public health officials; and describes coverage and reimbursement issues that are essential to scale and sustain testing programs.

Surveillance and Contact Tracing

Among its surveillance and contact tracing recommendations, NACDS urges a national program through private and public partnerships that creates a single access point for data; demonstrates the importance of existing models related to hepatitis C and HIV; and emphasizes the importance of modern infrastructure.

NACDS represents traditional drug stores, supermarkets and mass merchants with pharmacies. Chains operate over 40,000 pharmacies, and NACDS’ over 80 chain member companies include regional chains, with a minimum of four stores, and national companies. Chains employ nearly 3 million individuals, including 155,000 pharmacists. They fill over 3 billion prescriptions yearly, and help patients use medicines correctly and safely, while offering innovative services that improve patient health and healthcare affordability. NACDS members also include more than 900 supplier partners and over 70 international members representing 21 countries. Please visit NACDS.org

NeoTract Designates Dr. Gustavo Villegas as UroLift® Center of Excellence

News Image

“We are pleased to recognize Dr. Gustavo Villegas as a UroLift Center of Excellence for his commitment to providing consistent care to BPH patients using the UroLift System treatment,” said Dave Amerson

NeoTract, a wholly owned subsidiary of Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE:TFX) focused on addressing unmet needs in the field of urology, today announced that Gustavo Villegas M.D., DHR Health Urology Institute in Edinburg, TX, has been designated as a UroLift® Center of Excellence. The designation recognizes that Dr. Villegas has achieved a high level of training and experience with the UroLift® System and demonstrated a commitment to exemplary care for men suffering from symptoms associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate.

Recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines, the FDA-cleared Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH. The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue.

The UroLift Center of Excellence program is designed to highlight urologists who are committed to educating their patients on BPH and the UroLift System as a treatment option and consistently seek to deliver excellent patient outcomes and experiences.

“We are pleased to recognize Dr. Gustavo Villegas as a UroLift Center of Excellence for his commitment to providing consistent care to BPH patients using the UroLift System treatment,” said Dave Amerson, president of the Teleflex Interventional Urology business unit. “This achievement has helped many patients experience durable, long- term relief from the burdensome symptoms of BPH while preserving sexual function*1,2.”

Over 40 million men in the United States are affected by BPH, a condition that occurs when the prostate gland that surrounds the male urethra becomes enlarged with advancing age and begins to obstruct the urinary system. Symptoms of BPH often include interrupted sleep and urinary problems and can cause loss of productivity, depression and decreased quality of life.

Medication is often the first-line therapy for enlarged prostate, but relief can be inadequate and temporary. Side effects of medication treatment can include sexual dysfunction, dizziness and headaches, prompting many patients to quit using the drugs. For these patients, the classic alternative is surgery that cuts, heats or removes prostate tissue to open the blocked urethra. While current surgical options can be very effective in relieving symptoms, they can also leave patients with permanent side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and retrograde ejaculation.

About the UroLift® System

The FDA-cleared UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a minimally invasive transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue. Clinical data from a pivotal 206-patient randomized controlled study showed that patients with enlarged prostate receiving UroLift implants reported rapid and durable symptomatic and urinary flow rate improvement without compromising sexual function*1,2. Patients also experienced a significant improvement in quality of life. Over 100,000 men have been treated with the UroLift System in the U.S. Most common adverse events reported include hematuria, dysuria, micturition urgency, pelvic pain, and urge incontinence. Most symptoms were mild to moderate in severity and resolved within two to four weeks after the procedure. The Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines. The UroLift System is available in the U.S., Europe, Australia, Canada, Mexico and South Korea. Learn more at http://www.UroLift.com.

Employees Pave the Way with Innovation in a Remote Work Environment

We immediately saw increased engagement with our employees from sharing content to volunteering to create a weekly playlist to share with their peers on a music streaming service, the innovative ideas just kept coming.

Like many other companies across the United States, Simplify Compliance transitioned its employees to a remote work environment due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. While this presented a new set of challenges to overcome, Simplify Compliance leveraged its expertise in human capital management to foster employee innovation and collaboration.

Its HR team immediately implemented a new employee intranet website to serve as the central hub for all company related activities. The website featured a weekly video update from CEO Dan Oswald and other executive team members, helpful links, COVID-19 information, and resources that reinforced the company’s core values.

The company hosted video live streams with the Chief Technology Officer, Jim Robb, to assist with the transition to a new internal collaboration platform. Simplify Compliance used the features of this platform to create a virtual breakroom for employees to join chat groups on topics such as employee recognition, wellness tips, a work from home/quarantine diary, TV show recommendations, memes and more.

“We immediately saw increased engagement with our employees,” said Benjamin Polly, Chief People Officer at Simplify Compliance, “from sharing content to volunteering to create a weekly playlist to share with their peers on a music streaming service, the innovative ideas just kept coming.”

With the suspension of academic classes, the employee tutoring program emerged as the company leveraged the skills and backgrounds of its employees to provide one-on-one remote instruction to the children of their co-workers. In addition to the health and well-being of Simplify Compliance employees and their families, the company’s focus has been on ensuring that employees feel highly engaged, highly productive and recognized for their contributions during this time.

New Moms Not Receiving Adequate Education and Resources to Prepare Them for the First Six Weeks Postpartum

Aeroflow survey results highlight the challenges faced by new moms during the first six weeks postpartum.

“The weeks following birth are a very nerve-wracking and uncertain time for new moms, which is why they need to feel fully equipped with what to expect during their recovery and how to care for their baby,” said Dr. Jessica Madden, Medical Director of Aeroflow Breastpumps.

Aeroflow Healthcare today announced the results of a proprietary survey designed to highlight the experiences and struggles faced by new moms during the first six weeks postpartum, also known as the first 42 days. The third party-administered survey polled 394 women living in the United States with children between the ages 0-1 and was completed over a span of three days in March 2020. To download the full survey results, please click here.

Notable survey results include:

  • Almost all new moms (90%) believe educating mothers about what to expect/resources available during the first six weeks postpartum can and should be improved
  • An overwhelming majority of new moms (76%) were not given information or guidance regarding any products/medical devices that may help with recovery
  • The top things new moms struggled with most in the first six weeks postpartum include breastfeeding (66%), followed by postpartum depression/anxiety (48%) and social support isolation (39%)
  • One-in-four new moms (25%) report not feeling like they had access to the necessary care to address any/all of the above issues
  • Nearly three-in-five new moms (59%) felt they needed assistance to breastfeed comfortably and successfully
  • The majority of new moms (66%) report the postpartum period was more difficult than they thought it would be, which not surprisingly resulted in more than half (56%) having family/friends stay with them to help out—especially for the 25% of new moms that had to go back to work within the first six weeks after giving birth
  • Half of moms (50%) report not feeling prepared in what to expect and how to care for their body the first six weeks postpartum
  • Nearly one-in-five (19%) new moms report not being provided guidance regarding symptoms that may indicate a health concern after delivery, and when to raise these concerns to a doctor

These survey results highlight the profound hardships new moms experience when navigating the first six weeks postpartum, with many not receiving the necessary education and resources to aid in recovery and caring for a newborn. With women’s bodies undergoing drastic changes throughout and after pregnancy, new moms are experiencing physical symptoms including breast engorgement and pain (70%), soreness/pain in the vaginal and rectal areas (64%) and abdominal/uterine cramping (63%) while trying to figure out how to breastfeed successfully and properly care for a newborn.

New moms need all the support and information possible from their doctors and midwives, as almost half (48%) reported primarily feeling stressed and overwhelmed during this time. For example, a new mom’s first postpartum check-up typically takes place following the first six weeks after giving birth, but nearly two-in-five (38%) saw a healthcare provider within the first two weeks. While some of these women certainly may have required medical advice/attention, this shows there is a lot of uncertainty around what to expect and how to care for themselves and their baby during this time. As a result, many new moms are leaning on friends and family (64%) as opposed to their OB or midwife (46%) to gather information on what to expect during the postpartum period.

“The weeks following birth are a very nerve-wracking and uncertain time for new moms, which is why they need to feel fully equipped with what to expect during their recovery and how to care for their baby,” said Dr. Jessica Madden, Medical Director of Aeroflow Breastpumps. “Before moms leave the hospital with their newborns, it’s imperative that they feel confident in knowing the symptoms they will experience as their body recovers, when severity of symptoms indicate a more serious issue and the resources available to them to help with the process—especially when it comes to medical devices that will aid in healing.”

“We hope this study raises awareness about the need to improve postpartum education through all stages of a pregnancy and shows new moms all over the country that they are not alone in the challenges they face. Women need all the support possible to help them through this six-week period, so it’s important that they are not in the dark about where to turn to alleviate pain and discomfort as their bodies recover,” said Jennifer Jordan, Director of Mom and Baby at Aeroflow Healthcare. “Aeroflow proudly supports all new moms throughout their motherhood journey and remains committed to providing them with the highest quality tools, resources and medical devices to make the transition as smooth as possible.”

Meyer Vacation Rentals Awards Front Line Heroes Battling COVID-19 With Free Beach Vacations

Meyer Vacation Rentals Front Line Heroes Beach Vacation Giveaway

Meyer Vacation Rentals, based on the Alabama/Florida Gulf Coast, will give away 20 free beach vacations to Front Line Heroes who are serving others in the battle against COVID-19.

From physicians and nurses who are working 24-hour shifts to teachers who have switched to online instruction while also helping deliver students’ lunches to truckers who keep America’s food supply en route to our tables, these people truly are American heroes.

Meyer Vacation Rentals President Michelle Hodges announced this week the first winners of the Front Line Heroes Beach Vacation Giveaway.

Meyer will award a total of 20 three-night beach getaways during May to deserving individuals whose work has placed them on the front lines of the COVID-19 crisis.

Nominations have come in by the hundreds for those who are working on the front lines of this pandemic, whether they are first responders, work in healthcare or law enforcement, serve as essential retail workers, or are teachers or other types of caregivers, Hodges said.

“The entire Meyer Vacation Rentals family is so thankful for the work our healthcare providers and all those who support others during this crisis have done on behalf of us, our loved ones and our neighbors,” she said. “And, while we could never repay these heroes for their tireless efforts, we’d like to say ‘thank you’ by offering the gift of time to rest and relax with their loved ones at the beach.”

Hodges said the entire Meyer team has been moved by the stories of those nominated for the drawing.

“These heroes’ stories are so heartwarming, and our staff has been brought to tears on numerous occasions. In fact, we called one winner while she was still in quarantine waiting to return home after being deployed on the USNS Comfort in New York City. A career Navy professional, she left behind a husband and five children to serve on the ship. Another, who has an autoimmune deficiency herself and spent a great deal of time in the hospital as a child, has been working on the front lines of the pandemic and giving her all to her pediatric patients. We are so proud to be able to give these heroes and their families some time to decompress at the beach when they are ready,” she said.

Each person nominated deserves recognition for the outstanding work they are doing to keep us all safe and healthy, Hodges reiterated.

“From physicians and nurses who are working 24-hour shifts to teachers who have switched to online instruction while also helping deliver students’ lunches to truckers who keep America’s food supply en route to our tables, these people truly are American heroes.”

Many Meyer Vacation Rentals owner partners generously donated time in their beach condos or houses to provide winners and their families with a beach vacation getaway to the Alabama/Florida Gulf Coast.

“I’m proud of you for doing this. I played your video for my staff, and we were all crying by the end. You all are the best,” said one property owner. “We thank you for your effort over many years. We would like to join the effort to offer vacation time to these heroes,” said another.

“This giveaway simply would not have been possible without the many Meyer owner partners who donated time in their vacation rental properties for this program,” Hodges said. “We are so grateful for their generosity.”

Home Care Agency Deploys Hand Sanitizer Kiosks to Help Fight COVID-19

Amada Senior Care of Greater Milwaukee is sponsoring kiosks with sanitizer wipes to help minimize COVID-19 risk.

Our goal is to help minimize risk so that more people are kept safe. We want to ensure the health and safety of our home care clients, caregivers and customers of CVS pharmacies.

Committed to doing everything it can to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus, Amada Senior Care of Greater Milwaukee is placing hand sanitizer kiosks in several drugstore pharmacies for public use. The kiosk program is just the newest protocol that Amada of Greater Milwaukee, a premier non-medical provider of in-home senior care, has put into place in response to the current global pandemic.

While closely monitoring the COVID-19 situation, Amada Senior Care continues to follow the most current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines. Amada caregivers are equipped with PPE (personal protective equipment) like masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer. They have received trainings and certifications on how to minimize transmission risk to clients during COVID-19. Their training on safety protocols, hygiene standards, infection control and the nature and communicability of airborne pathogens is continually updated and emphasized.

Taking the additional public service step of providing hand sanitizer kiosks is in keeping with Amada Franchise Inc.’s core commitment of enriching lives. DR Salerno, owner of Amada Senior Care of Greater Milwaukee, expects that sponsoring kiosks in several drugstore pharmacies will help residents minimize exposure to COVID-19 during this national emergency. Given many sponsorship options, Mr. Salerno decided that kiosks offer a better opportunity to support the CDC recommendation of hand washing/sanitizing as the single most important means of preventing the spread of infection.

“Our goal is to help minimize risk so that more people are kept safe,” says Mr. Salerno. “We want to ensure the health and safety of our home care clients, caregivers and customers of CVS pharmacies. We are pleased to introduce this public safety program through our partner Terraboost and do our part to help the communities we serve. Along with following industry-leading protocols for caregiver safety, we are making great strides serving seniors and other clients in this COVID-19 pandemic period and preparing for a strong recovery while maximizing everyone’s safety.”

Those who come across an Amada Senior Care kiosk will learn about how trained Amada caregivers work one-on-one with seniors, providing them personalized assistance with everyday activities and helping them manage any chronic health conditions. The Amada franchise system is a trusted partner in the senior healthcare continuum, providing critical support to overwhelmed community-based care resources. Providing exceptional in-home care is the overarching mission for the 200 franchise locations around the country because studies show that having an in-home caregiver promotes a meaningful routine, rapport, and connection, letting seniors and their family members focus on wellness.

As Amada continues to quickly respond to the rapidly changing COVID-19 environment, its foremost goal is the health and safety of seniors and families. Please consider Amada as a trusted resource and feel free to reach out with any questions about in-home caregiving, preserving the health of a beloved senior in your life, or obtaining specific assistance.
