ICAA task force to lead senior living transformation after COVID-19

CEO of the International Council on Active Aging, an association that leads, connects and defines the active-aging industry, supports organizations and professionals that develop wellness environments and services for adults over 50.

Colin Milner, CEO of the International Council on Active Aging

The health, wellness and quality of life of our residents and staff are paramount as we chart a path forward in the midst of uncertainty.

A coalition of prominent industry associations representing all segments of senior living have joined more than 160 industry thought leaders and suppliers to provide guidance for communities throughout North America as they prepare to reopen safely after COVID-19.

Participants in the ICAA COVID-19 Senior Living Task Force include representatives of for-profit, not-for-profit, and affordable housing — organizations providing active-adult and independent living, continuing care retirement communities/life plan, assisted living, long-term care, skilled nursing, and rehabilitation

Participating industry associations include, among others, LeadingAge, American Senior Housing Association (ASHA), Argentum, American Medical Directors Association (AMDA), Pioneer Network, National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (N4A), National Council on Aging (NCOA), The National Association Directors of Nursing Administration in Long-Term Care (NADONA), and the American Society on Aging (ASA).

“The health, wellness and quality of life of our residents and staff are paramount as we chart a path forward in the midst of uncertainty,” said ICAA founder and CEO Colin Milner, who conceived the initiative. “The task force will develop, in conjunction with recommendations from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), guidance for all senior living organizations as they plan when and how they will reopen their internal services, including wellness, therapy, spas, and cafes, to current and potential residents, as well as family members, staff and volunteers.”

Milner will co-chair the task force with Richard H. Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS, 17th US Surgeon General, Chief of Health Innovations, Canyon Ranch, and psychologist/gerontologist Ken Dychtwald, PhD, best-selling author, founder and CEO of Age Wave.

“Organizations need to make their way through the pandemic and have a game plan to come out of it,” Milner said. “Importantly, all key stakeholders are coming together as a group to address COVID-19’s impact on the industry, and help ensure that organizations will continue to be viable and meet residents’ expectations and desires while also ensuring their safety now and into the future.”

Task force members and panelists at the May 27 and May 28 launch sessions will address fundamental issues such as social distancing and its impact on the built environment, infrastructure needs and engagement.

Industry partners supporting the Task Forces efforts include: Humana, Matrix Fitness, CDW, NuStep, Keiser, Domtar, Merrithew, Delos, and iN2L.

About the ICAA COVID-19 Senior Living Industry Task Force

The ICAA COVID-19 Senior Living Task Force will, in conjunction with CDC recommendations, generate and provide ideas, tactics, strategies and messaging suggestions that organizations can consider, now and in the future, when planning to reopen their internal services (wellness, therapy, spas, cafes) and their communities to the outside population (family members, volunteers). This includes, but is not limited to, the impact of the built and virtual environments, social activities and food/beverage services, technology, education and security that impacts the health and well-being of staff and residents; challenges to current and future business models; and approaches to build confidence in living in and visiting senior living properties.

OPM Announces Proprietary Technology for Applying Nanoscale PEKK Coating to Orthopedic Devices

Oxford Performance Materials, Inc. (OPM), a materials science company and industry leader in advanced biomedical polymers and high-performance additive manufacturing (HPAM®), announced today that it has been awarded a patent for its proprietary coating technology.

OPM’s patented OXPEKK®-SC (Solution Casting) product – first commercialized in April 2018 – delivers a sub-micron thin film with medical applications as a coating for various implantable devices and instrumentation during production processes. OXPEKK®-SC is a water-based solution that when applied, produces an ultra-thin film designed to provide the full range of the biological features of poly-ether-ketone-ketone – including osseoconductivity, antibacterial characteristics and biocompatibility – in addition to PEKK’s mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. OXPEKK®-SC film tenaciously bonds to most substrates and can be applied via spray or dipped with a minimum thickness of 75nm.

Studies have demonstrated that OPM’s OsteoFab® implant technology (3D printed PEKK) promotes bone ongrowth and possesses inherent antibacterial characteristics, and this exciting new coating process may provide similar benefits on implantable devices pre-treated with OXPEKK®-SC. The primary use for such thin coatings would be on the surfaces of implantable orthopedic devices. These devices are generally fabricated using metallic materials like titanium, cobalt chrome, and iron alloys. Over time, these metals have been shown to corrode within the body, releasing metal ions that can degrade device performance and impose systemic side effects in patients. An application of a corrosion-resistant OXPEKK®-SC coating would be expected to reduce the rate of implant deterioration. In the realm of surgical instrumentation, an OXPEKK®-SC coating would be similarly expected to reduce deterioration rates, especially for those metal instruments that experience pitting and failure as a result of repeated cleaning and re-sterilization.

“The genesis of this technology goes back over 15 years when we made some important discoveries in a PEM fuel cell membrane project,” said Scott DeFelice, Chief Executive Officer of OPM. “We were thrilled to be notified of this new patent issue, which provides OPM with a broad market path as the leader in PEKK coatings and the ability to substantially improve the performance of orthopedic devices and the lifetime of surgical instrumentation across the entire industry.”

For industrial applications of OXPEKK®-SC, OPM has ongoing developments with large glass and carbon fiber producers underway. Production quantities of this product are currently available.

About Oxford Performance Materials, Inc.  Oxford Performance Materials is a materials science company founded in 2000 to exploit and commercialize the world’s highest performing thermoplastic, PEKK (poly-ether-ketone-ketone). OPM’s Materials business has developed a range of proprietary, patented technologies for the synthesis and modification of a range of PAEK polymers that are sold under its OXPEKK® brand for biomedical and industrial applications. The Company is a pioneer in 3D printing. OPM Biomedical’s OsteoFab® technology is in commercial production in numerous orthopedic implant applications, including cranial, facial, spinal, and sports medicine devices. OPM is the first and only company to receive FDA 510(k) clearance to manufacture 3D printed, patient-specific polymeric implants of any type, and the company has six 510(k) clearances in its portfolio. OPM Industrial produces 3D printed OXFAB® production parts for highly demanding applications in the energy, transportation, and semiconductor markets. OXFAB® structures offer significant weight, cost, and time-to-market reductions that are defined in a set of specified performance attributes in the exhaustive OPM B-Basis database, developed in conjunction with NASA. The SeaCare Difference – SeaCare, Inc.’s Proprietary Process Produces the Highest Levels of Frondoside A in a Sea Cucumber Supplement

SeaCare Dietary Supplement

SeaCare has always believed that quality is the most important aspect of any product.

The Sea Cucumber-derived triterpenoid glycoside Frondoside A, which has been extensively researched for its immuno-modulatory, anti-fungal, anti-tumor, and other beneficial properties is extracted from the Sea Cucumber in a proprietary process to give SeaCare Dietary Supplement a highly potent dose of the active ingredient.

You’ve heard it time and time again: “You get what you pay for.” It is usually in reference to something cheap not living up the unrealistic expectations of similar – but superior – products. This thought transcends markets, and it almost always comes down to one thing: quality. SeaCare has always believed that quality is the most important aspect of any product, and because of this has perfected their proprietary process to produce the highest level of Frondoside A of any Sea Cucumber Supplement.

For decades researchers across the world have been isolating Frondoside A and other Sea Cucumber-derived glycosylated triterpenoids to study their benefits. Frondoside A has consistently shown to be the most beneficial of all the enzymes, which is why it has been the focus of the vast majority of Sea Cucumber research. According to a recent study by Mar Drugs published in 2018, the anti-cancer effects of Frondoside A reported that “Frondoside A has a broad spectrum of anti-cancer effects, including induction of cellular apoptosis, inhibition of cancer cell growth, migration, invasion, formation of metastases, and angiogenesis.” (Mar Drugs, 2018)

Many Sea Cucumber supplement manufacturers are aware of the benefits these creatures hold and with good intent to provide the public with a source of the enzymes put the Sea Cucumber into pill form. However, the process in which the majority of these pills are produced isn’t conducive to preserving the inherent nutritional value of the animal, nor does it give the consumer more than a nominal dose of Frondoside A. Their process involves simply dehydrating the animal and putting it into a pill – body and all – which doesn’t have any beneficial properties, especially after being dehydrated.

SeaCare’s proprietary process includes extracting the enzymes from the Sea Cucumber in a highly scientific and exact process that exponentially increases the amount of Frondoside A and the other glycosylated triterpenoids in the Sea Cucumber Supplement.

SeaCare has spent decades perfecting the process to produce their Sea Cucumber Supplement which also includes extracts from Sea Urchins and Marine Grasses. Each of these ingredients is processed to pull extractions of the active agents so that each dose of SeaCare only contains elements that are beneficial to the body – and never contains fillers.

Consumers have choices when it comes to what they put in their bodies – and this is obviously a great and necessary thing. But the consumers must keep the old saying in mind that you get what you pay for. Inexpensive Sea Cucumber Supplements are inexpensive for a reason – they simply don’t contain enough of the active ingredients in each dose. SeaCare is a high-end supplement on the other end of the spectrum. Each dose is packed full of Frondoside A and all of the other important beneficial enzymes from the Sea Cucumbers, Sea Urchins and Marine Grasses.

When choosing your supplements, do your research. Not all supplements are created equal.

Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers Move from the Sideline to the Frontline to Assist with Pandemic Response

I love having the opportunity to help out. I’m very thankful that I am able to help flatten the curve and keep everything running smoothly. Every little bit of help matters. – Joann Zazula, Athletic Trainer, Penn State Health St. Joseph’s.

Athletic trainers are licensed allied healthcare professionals, who in collaboration with a physician, can provide primary care, injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. Secondary schools and colleges/universities employ a large majority of Pennsylvania’s athletic trainers. With school districts and colleges/universities closing and suspending intercollegiate and interscholastic athletics in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, ATs are employing their skills in new ways.

Athletic trainers who are employed by hospitals have taken on new roles assisting with screening patients as they arrive at the hospital and drive up testing sites. Joann Zazula is an athletic trainer at Alvernia University employed through Penn State Health St. Joseph’s. Since she is not able to perform her typical duties she has taken on a new role of screening patients visiting the hospital. Her new role involves asking patients who are reporting for appointments at the medical offices of Penn State Health St. Joseph’s a series of questions which includes asking them if they have been experiencing cough, shortness of breath, fever, or if they have been contacted by state or federal officials informing them they have been exposed to someone with the COVID-19 virus. The other role which she fulfills is serving as first stop of the drive up testing site. Her job is to ensure the patient has a prescription from a physician ordering the test. If they do not, she helps them with the process of having their physician fax a prescription or set up a telemedicine appointment through Penn State Health. Reflecting on her role in the pandemic response, Joann says, “I love having the opportunity to help out. I’m very thankful that I am able to help flatten the curve and keep everything running smoothly. Every little bit of help matters.”

Another way athletic trainers are answering a call to action is through the Go4Ellis app. Go4Ellis is a mobile app that was originally designed to connect sporting event planners with athletic trainers to provide the appropriate health care for their events and the athletes participating. Go4Ellis has partnered with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) to adjust the platform to support hospital systems and health care organizations who are in need of additional staffing to support the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This effort has created over 2,500 jobs for athletic trainers nationwide over the past five weeks.
